Not what we expected. Atmosphere was great...old school feel,etc . No pulled pork...everything is sliced or on the bone. The rolls were outstanding, but never offered them to us again. Besides my OKRA, the food was not hot at all. My husband's sandwich was flat (like it was pressed down) and burned on the top. The ambiance here is fantastic 1950's awesomeness that includes large carved wooden animals like bears. They have a lot more going on here than just BBQ and they have quite a selection on the menu. As a total BBQ addict I obviously had to try the brisket and while it was quite short of fantastic it was alright and better than many other places I've eaten at in Alabama (which generally compares poorly with Texas brisket as Alabama is usually just all about the pig). I probably wouldn't get the brisket again but I would opt for the steaks, burgers, seafood, chicken and country breakfast. They also have a limited beer and wine selection. The service is outstanding and old school Southern friendly. This is just an enjoyable place to visit and enjoy the atmosphere. read more

Me and my Husband tried this restaurant out for this first time and we were definitely pleased! The waitress was amazing, other staff were attentive and we weren't ecen their table. I love BBQ. This place is not it. There was hardly any meat on the back ribs. The peach cobbler wasn't even a cobber is was like a cakelike. The fried orka was almost burt. I've been going here for years with my family. We normally go for breakfast because I love their biscuits with peach preserves. The other night we tried it for dinner and the ribeye steak was great. It was cooked perfectly and had a lot of flavor. My husband had the burger. It was big, and he enjoyed it, but I thought it was a little bland. They have steak fries, which seem to be hard to find these days and I happen to love them, so that was cool. The place is older and could use a good cleaning. We pulled over at this location, just off of I-10, seeking some great BBQ to start our latest road-trip. We found a place with OK BBQ that was frozen in time. The decor was clearly from another era, rustic and manly, with model planes and trains, multiple wooden bear statues, silk plants and turtles. The chairs around the tables I am guessing are older than I am, but that sturdy and rustic. The pork was a little dry, the side items had a cafeteria consistency to them, not horrible, but not great either. The bread pudding in Alabama is completely different than that in New Orleans, so maybe it's just me. read more

Great little BBQ spot. Every time there's a backup through Mobile on the way home from the beach, we take a detour and stop over here. When you are known for something you generally do it right. Although the name implies BBQ mostly what I see hit the table is seafood and home cooked options. I'm not sure if it's really a seafood and steak place that also serves BBQ. Dick Russell's is on the frontage road to Highway 90. The parking lot is small, and not very user friendly. With a drive through, you play Russian Roulette crossing certain areas of the lot. You smell the smoke of the BBQ wafting from the chimney when you park. It gets you excited for the food inside. Walking in the door you have a small entry with a door to the right to enter the dining room and a door to the left that someone is running you over while leaving the register. When you enter the dining area you are immediately on top of a table. And if it's a wait to be seated evening, it's pretty awkward being 2 feet from 3 tables waiting to be seated - which might be a while if the restaurant is full. The restaurant is darker than I like it. It's decor is out dated but looks like a western ranch or barn inside. Red and white plaid, plastic table cloths with booths and tables. At least the booths are comfortable in this place. There is fabulous sweet tea here - a southern classic done right. The beverage order was taken and hit the table in less than a minute even though every single seat in the house was taken. Every employee was working together and working hard. A choreographed dance of service that didn't disappoint. I've had the seafood and steaks in the past. The seafood is delicious and fried well. It just happens to taste to much alike. The steaks have been good too. This night I had the BBQ sampler with Cole slaw and BBW beans. I'm not a huge fan of Slaw but this was really good. I didn't like the paprika on it so heavily, but it was better than most slaw that gets served anywhere else. The sampler had brisket, sliced pork, some other kind of pork I couldn't identify and baby back ribs. The sauce was strong and not sweet. Like it had been cooked too long. Not burned but almost. While the meat was good, I didn't care for the sauce. The BBQ beans though? Delicious. I could eat a whole gallon of them, and I will get them again. Total bill was around $30 with my wife getting a small salad. There are no larger salad options. But, she loves home made ranch dressing and Dick Russell's delivers on good ranch dressing. I don't like having to wait in line at the register standing next to people waiting to get their food and trying to enjoy their own conversations. I wish that payment could be made from the table. And there's an annoying train whistle that every adult lets their small child pull over and over blasting ear drums throughout the restaurant. It's been in the same spot forever, it's had the same employees forever (a good thing too!) but the restaurant has more than outgrown its building and it needs to refocus on what it does best - which right now is seafood and steaks. read more

Lots of people I know love Dick Russell's and I am not one of them. I have visited several times over the years, and used to get the BBQ chicken. It is a strange dish and has been very dry each time I've ordered it, and the bbq sauce itself is really strange. I ordered a hamburger once and if I was ever forced at gun point to go to Dick Russell's again that's what I would order. Their breakfast is okay, the two times recently I visited the supposedly amazing biscuits were burnt. We visited as a family (my husband & I, parents, and brother) one Sunday afternoon and it was terrible. I had the pot roast, which was extremely fatty, tough, bland, and completely unenjoyable, with a side of candied yams. I will say the yams were delicious, yams are hard to come by in restaurants and my mom & I really enjoyed these. But the roast was inedible, and my husband also hated his food. We were seated by the kitchen and so I was able to see how disgusting parts of the kitchen were and that was a big turn off. My husband & I both agree that it was one of the worst restaurant experiences we'd had in a very long time. I cannot express how much I do not want to come back here. My brother and I are visiting Mobile, AL for a few days. We asked the desk lady at Holiday Inn Express for a good place to east and she quickly replied Dick Russell's BBQ. We responded in kind a few hours later and found ourselves seated in a booth there. Bobbie (manager) brought us beverages and menus. She was very gracious, polite, earnest, and willing to please our taste buds. We both ordered the fried oysters and fried shrimp 1/2 & 1/2 (12 pieces). It came with 4 hush-puppies, fries, and coleslaw, but we were able to substitute for any two of the sides. I chose okra and fries ,but Steve chose coleslaw and a baked potato. We also ordered some shared onion rings. The onion rings and two dipping sauces arrived at our booth quickly. They were delicious! My brother has sought the perfect onion rings all over the globe, and after sampling what Bobbie brought to said that they were in the top five of those he had previously consumed. Hot, nice light batter that was crispy, yet not over-cooked. The meaty flesh of the interior onion ring was sweet and cooked perfectly. We had each enjoyed two onion rings when Bobbie brought our dinner plates to the table with a platter containing tarter sauce, cocktail sauce, and butter. Upon sampling the plated items, we found them all delicious! The oysters & shrimp were lightly breaded and cooked perfectly. The french fries (cottage style)& okra were generous portions. The hush-puppies were tasty, but a little on the dry side. We tried to eat everything delivered, but failed after giving it our best.
