Landed in Mobile and found BBQ. Vacation has begun. I'm glad I didn't use the other reviews to steer me away from anything. This is solid Southern barbecue, with authentic meats and their own special sauce. A little nick for only having one sauce, with bottles of sport peppers if you want to add your own heat? And ruin their flavor? But they brought more sauce when I asked so that I could drench ALL the meats. Brisket had a bit of a corned beef vibe to it. Ribs may not have fallen off the bone but they pulled off cleanly, and absolutely are not dry. The pulled pork was a little dry, perhaps. None of the meats were the best I've ever had, but all absolutely were good enough to recommend and have again. The sides: Generous fried okra. Beans have a nice meat base. They were nice to let me pick my sides even though the menu says beans and slaw. In general the service was nice and very accommodating, but a little Southern slow to stop by at times. Hey, I'm in the South. Verdict: Not convinced this is the best BBQ in Mobile, but for being all the way out west in range of the airport, probably the best food and dining experience for miles around. read more

This place is solid for many foods but I always come for the cheeseburger. Honestly, their cheeseburger and steak fries are consistently excellent. Service is good and the place is fairly clean, though it can get a little loud inside (it gets crowded). The other food can be a little more hit and miss. I had a biscuit that was mostly really good but it was underdone in the middle. So if you want a good burger, it's gonna be great. read more

On a wednesday night we decided to try dinner here as breakfast was quite nice. Lets just say breakfast is better. The ribs were dry amd no amount of sauce helped, the fries were not fully cooked, the coleslaw was ok. The baked potato was huge and tasted ok. Our server worked with her feet many trips to the kitchen empty handed despite the need for dishes on tables to be cleared. Not a successful visit. Menu just has to many great items to choose from. Went round and round before deciding on the smothered pork chopS over rice plus 2 sides. Yes pork chops as in more than one. Absolutely cooked great. I work out in this part of town, so it was high time I tried this place. There are mixed reviews about Dick Russell's so I've been hesitant to try it. I hear their breakfast is out of this world, while their lunch and dinner is hit and miss. But I'm always one to make my own assessment based on my own observations and experiences, so I decided to give it a go for lunch. I arrived and took a moment for my eyes to adjust from the bright sunny day outside to the dark and rustic atmosphere of the establishment. It seemed clean enough and I was soon seated by a pleasant, albeit busy waitress, who gave me a menu to look over. My initial idea was to get a burger, but gave into the call of the brisket. I love a good brisket. I ordered it with a side of baked beans and mashed potatoes with gravy. They also brought some toasted bread with some butter. So I waited for what seemed like an eternity for my food, and I got up and looked around the place a bit, and kind of dug the decor in the place. I soon returned to my seat, and they finally brought my food after I had returned. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but what I got wasn't it. I got a plate of dry, overcooked meat that didn't resemble brisket in any way. It was slices of beef, with some sauce squirted all over it, it was definitely not good. The mashed potatoes were lukewarm at best. The baked beans were good, but not great. In fact, the toast might have actually been the best part of the meal. I definitely should have gone for the burger. I'm going to give this place another shot in the future, and hopefully try some of that amazing breakfast I've heard about. Stopped by on our way back to Texas since I was curious about AL bbq. Should have just kept driving! Ordered the beef plate and received small slices of what looked and tasted like pot roast, covered with a sickly sweet sauce. Meat was tough and chewy with no indication whatsoever that it even been near a smoker. People must like the sauce here (which real bbq does not need!), because they certainly aren't coming for the meat. Coleslaw was the only bright spot in the meal. Had lunch there today. The place was BUSY but the service was great. Had the lunch special with 1/4 chicken. It turned out to be a separate leg and thigh that hadn't seen a grill in several days. The sides were delicious and the server couldn't have been nicer or more attentive. We had candied yams (10/10) baked beans (10/10) and potato salad (7/10). The only disappointment was the chicken. Great food with super friendly service. The servicers here are super friendly. I had the BBQ sausage. Thinnly sliced with a nice amount of spiceness. Turnips were full of flavor. Haven't been to this place in maybe 30+yrs. I couldn't remember how the food was. I heard there were new owners so I decided to try it out in hopes of finding a good restaurant in this part of town. I was surprised to find the restaurant still old, tired and dirty looking inside. Should have left then but you know sometimes you find a hidden gem in a little hole in the wall. I ordered the half chicken. (Mind you, good BBQ doesn't need any sauce. Sauce is just a condiment like ketchup or A-1 sauce. If the meat is no good there's no amount of sauce that will save it). The chicken was soooo dry it was obviously cooked that morning or even the day before. BBQ sauce couldn't revive it. The sides (potato salad & baked beans) were clearly not made in house but out of a bucket bought from some restaurant supply store. Absolutely zero flavor. My husband ordered the loaded baked potato. Although it was wrapped in aluminum foil it was clearly microwaved. Not fluffy but rubbery. Why? They have ovens! It was also not sliced open but had been totally flattened like road kill. We both just started at it when the waitress brought it to the table. Like "what is that?" Unfortunately, now I know why I stopped coming here years ago. Let me start off by saying my server Mary was 10/10. She was very welcoming and friendly and was always right there to see how I was doing. With that kind of service, they were already winning. She is a gem and I hope the owners are taking good care of her because she was AMAZING. As for the food, today was my first time going to Dick Russell's and it was great. I had the pork chop plate with okra and potato salad ans it was perfect. I also ordered a BBQ sandwich. Last night I was thinking I haven't had a real good breakfast in a while. I have been meaning to check out Dick Russell's breakfast. It didn't disappoint. I knew Dick Russell's had a drive thru but I didn't know if they allowed breakfast orders. I made a call and found out it that it did. They also allowed me to make my order over the phone. I really appreciated that. I ordered the 2 egg plate with homemade sausage patty. It comes with a choice of 2 biscuits or toast and a choice of grits or hash browns. I chose biscuits and grits. When I went to pick up my food I was surprised at how heavy the plate was. When I got home to open my plate I figured out just why it was so heavy. The biscuits are huge. Also, the menu said homemade sausage patty. My plate had 2 huge sausage patties. I don't know if you're supposed to get 2 patties but I didn't complain. There were 2 portions of grits in the plate as well. Not sure who they expect to eat all this food! As if I needed to state this, the food excellent. I couldn't finish it all. I ate half the food on the plate. The biscuit was so good with the peach preserves that I didn't even half to ask for. You could tell the biscuits were freshly made. The sausage patty was tender and had so much flavor. I'm so glad I decided to get breakfast. I give the breakfast here 5 stars. We always saw the big billboard off of Interstate 10 for Dick Russell's BBQ, so we finally decided to check it out. My husband & I both ordered the large BBQ Beef Sandwich from the dinner menu. My husband got the half order of fresh onion rings plus a large dipping bowl of ranch. I ordered a Baked Sweet Potato & Greens from the side menu. The Sweet Potato came with butter, cinnamon, & brown sugar. Everything was delicious. I had coffee & water, husband had Pepsi. Large portions, we both had to ask for a take home container. I really like the atmosphere, it has a down home feel. The parking lot was pretty full, so that was a good sign. Came here with the family for the first time. They had no crab claws or wine despite having it on the menu. They had a bunch of other sides and items 86'd that I didn't even know what to order. I originally went to see if they had fried chicken, oddly enough they only had chicken tenders. Ok, whatever I got the shrimp platter. It was okay. I only got like 7 shrimps and was overwhelmed with these huge fries. Hush puppies were good. The ranch is delicious. I would give this place 2 stars because of how outdated they are with their items. I was staying at a motel just outside of Mobile after having been on the road for nearly eight hours and I was particularly hungry and wanted something besides fast food. Yelp showed me that Dick Russell's was nearby and so I stopped in. I decided to get the 10 oz. ribeye steak, and it was a good choice. I got the steak medium rare and you could taste the flavor of the beef itself, the sear from the grill, and the seasoning. Every piece of steak melted in my mouth. It came with a bread and two sides. For the bread I went with the biscuits, which were delicious and moist. The salad could honestly have been better, since it was literally some iceberg lettuce and pieces of tomato. The other side that I got was turnip greens, and they were amazing. They were incredibly mild and just slightly this side of sweet, which made a really nice complement to the steak. I got a local pilsner (Serda) which was also quite good. To sum up, the steak and biscuits were transcendent, the turnip greens were quite good, and the salad was... less impressive. Service was super-friendly as well, and that's always impressive in the last hour before closing. The meal was also really affordable, coming to $26.07 before tip for both the steak (with bread and two sides) and the beer. All told, this is an excellent place for a steak and I'll be coming here again for a meal next time I'm in the area. read more

We split the barbecue platter so that we could try variety of things. Not much food even for one person. Everything was covered in their barbecue sauce, so not sure what the meat tasted like without it. The sauce didn't provide any real flavor. Not sure I would call it barbecue sauce either. My only bad review is the "Menu" you printed! It listed only a few items from their actual menu. Shame on whomever allowed this! The actual menu is loaded with items, one of which is their yummy steaks! The service is impeccable, with the waitstaff usually there before you have to summon someone...
