This place is kind of a dive. Tables have ads plastered over them, making the restaurant look tacky. It was warm inside; not too bad but just below what I would consider comfortable. I ordered a Jumbo Cheeseburger with onion rings. My order came with fries for some reason. My burger was overcooked and lacked flavor. I cook better ones at home. My wife ordered the Green Chili Cheeseburger, which is supposed to be the best in town. She was very unimpressed, saying it was merely OK. The vegetables on my burger weren't very fresh. Our server was okay. Not all that friendly but attentive enough, I suppose. My order was wrong, in that it didn't come with onion rings like I asked. eh... whatever. Overall, not too good. I've had better burgers at Chil's or 5 Guys. Don't bother with this place. read more

i got food poisoning from their steak a couple months back and i very RARELY get sick from places/in general. somebody else at our table also ordered a steak (well cooked) which took a longer time to arrive and then when it did she said it had smelled weird and looked weird as well, she didnt eat it but mind you i was halfway done with mine and A1 covered the smell and diffused the taste so i couldnt tell but later the next day i had gotten sick and knew immediately it was the steak from this cafe. read more

The portions were small for the price, the seats in the booths we not wiped down, the floors were Dirty. When we asked the waitress who cleans the floor she stated they all do, but still in spite of the fact that we asked noone started cleaning the floors. read more

First off, we had to go get our own high chair for my grandson all the way at the back of the restaurant and every single one was sticky, slimy and disgusting. The table TOPS were clean, but the edges of all the tables and the chair backs were covered in crusted food and grease. There's even a counter stool that looks like someone's butt that actually looks like it went in its Daisy Dukes because there's food splattered all over it. Then, we ordered. My daughter's green chile cheeseburger was soggy and mushy all the way through. Somehow, even the burger itself wouldn't hold together. Every time she picked it up, the burger crumbled into tiny bits. My "pulled" pork sandwich consisted of huge chunks of tough, fatty pork and wasn't shredded at all. I'm not joking about tough either. I tried shredding it myself and just got smaller rubbery tough chunks. Somehow, with no sauce, and rubber pork, my bun was still soggy. Also, the onion that you're supposed to put on the burger and sandwich was huge chunks that were obviously the root end of the onion and were more suited to making soup than putting on a sandwich. This turned out to be a good stop for us because of the varied menu and quick cooks. The interior is cheerful and clean. Kinda weird that there are ads on the table tops though. I have to admit that I almost walked out because the servers took so long to greet me. When she finally came over, she apologized and explained that the recent lunch rush had thrown the servers for a loop. The "red" enchiladas were good (very spicy) and the club sandwich was decent. They were able to grill a chicken breast separately for my son. Unfortunately, the complimentary salsa was too spicy for my taste. However, my husband enjoined dipping the complimentary chips in his enchilada. The only real downer was the fries. The were floppy. My son wouldn't even eat them. One of the very BEST burgers that I have ever had! Awesome onion rings too! Generous portions and tasty freshness! The only drawback was the crappy 30 minutes I sat waiting for a server. Once she arrived, SHE had an attitude, perhaps because I pointed out the half our wait. I was starving though, like famished, so that manyana stuff wasnt flying with my hunger..lol! Dive. Yes in fact it is a dive. It's been around forever and it is reputed for it's amazingly greasy burgers and fries (and if that's what you want, it's a good place for it). The services also tends to suck. I do have to say their salsa is pretty fantastic and they are certainly not skimpy on the portions. Their ingredients are fresh and they do everything in house so their patties are not frozen circles of meat they throw on the grill. You can get green chili on just about everything here. However, nothing about this place is going to land it on "Diners Drive-Ins and Dives" because when it comes down to it, it's really just okay. read more

Well, after having the pulled pork here, I would have to guess that Dick's Cafe is the ONLY place in Las Cruces serving BBQ for it to rank as the best in Las Cruces. Unfortunately, that also makes it the WORST place for BBQ, which it certainly was. It doesn't look much from the outside but once walk in the door you see a classic diner. Service of wait staff is superb. However the quality of food shows laziness of kitchen. The Mexican plate came with undercooked rice and was loaded with salt. Being in New Mexico I would expect better quality especially with refried beans being ice cold. I ordered the quote voted best green chili burger in Las Cruces and it too was a disappointment. The burgers are hand pattied and taste really good. The buns however just fall apart. You could taste the green chili's at least. Management did offer a replacement item so chose the BLT. Loaded with lots bacon and fries were real potatoes but over cooked. Most Americans love a good burger now and then. Here is a place that finally delivers on a big and tasty burger. You have to watch what you ask for though on your food, because they will do just that. They start you out with some chips and hot salsa. Aye, it's hot. Hotter then American hot. This is good average Mexican hot with some decent flavor to it. When you order your food though, watch how you order it. You order it dry. It will be dry. If however you ask them for a nice big jumbo size juicy burger with all the trimmings and a bit 'O mayo. You'll see why this place just doesn't have enough parking spaces. To many people love their food and for good reason. Down home waitresses, a bit slow on service. Might have to fight for a parking space. I have been coming here for the green chili cheeseburgers since I was in college in the early 90s. The place has stayed clean and updated, but the food is unchanged - fantastic! The service is driven by regulars, so don't expect servers to fawn over you like your private jet is parked out front. But, they always get my food quick, and my drinks stay full. I am not too sure what else one can ask for. I make a point to stop here EVERY time I am in Las Cruces. I love it. read more

Gosh, what a disaster. We asked for a glass of red wine. The server came back and said they only had white wine. We asked for water. We ordered two steaks medium rare. The server was very nice. She said the steaks were frozen prior to cooking. She brought the steaks to the table and said that she had cut into them and they were over cooked. When does a server cut into a steak to check out the cooks. ??? We checked the steaks and sent them back. The new steaks arrived and the server said she cut into them and they were more rare. We cut off a piece of each steak and it was raw, and almost icy cold. We got up and walked out. The one star is for the nice server. This place may of had it's days. Pulled in into Dicks cafe for a quick lunch. Outside and inside were old fashion and quaint. Waitress was quick and friendly. I had a bacon cheese Burger with fries. Burger was good, while the fries were a bit on the blah side. Place was clean and saw no issue with coming back when I am in the area. read more

I've eaten here a couple times over the past year but never got around to writing a review. So... here goes! Service: 3/5 It's a cozy little place, come in and seat yourself. Only problem with that is it takes a while for someone to "find" you and get the ball rolling. Both times we had to wait a while before someone came by to get us drinks, etc. Also another big deal for me these days... working high chairs! I can't tell you how many places don't have high chairs with working restraints. Add Dick's to that list. Meal service was satisfactory, but as also is typical, keeping our water glasses full was apparently a challenge. Food: 3/5 It's typical diner fare, and normally I would totally endorse a local place like this over chains such as Denny's. But overall the food really isn't that much better. I had a hamburger on my first visit, Mexican food on my second. Both times I was just unimpressed. It was decent food, but nothing to write home about, nothing that would make me want to come back. Of the two the burger was better. The Mexican combo plate was barely above "frozen food" level and their "famous" salsa falls in the "hot with no flavor" category for me, which is a personal pet peeve. I don't mind salsa with kick, but it has to have flavor and not just heat... which is what this was. So overall, just good but not great. Overall Impressions: 3/5 "Good but not great," that pretty much sums up everything about Dick's for me. The food is ok, the service was ok, the value is ok. You won't feel ripped off, but you won't exactly feel like you got your money's worth either. It's a decent place to grab a burger, but there's nothing about it that will have you coming back for more, at least not in my opinion. This is the ultimate hamburger and New Mexican food dive that's been around since 1959. Their homemade hot salsa ranks up there as one of the best I've had and their Jumbo Green Chili Cheeseburgers and Fries will keep you full until you make it to wherever you're going. In my case today it was a 6 hour road-trip to Phoenix! Their burgers patties are freshly ground with their own recipe and the green chili is out of this world. Oh my goodness...YUM! This visit to the Las Cruces Dick's Cafe location totally made up for the horrible experience I had at the Mesilla location a couple months back. These burgers are definitely in their own category...nothing touches their flavor or their size. We could have split our burgers and left completely satisfied. I had to pack up half my burger and fries since I was so stuffed. They use fresh potatoes for their fries. They managed to have terrific service even during their busy lunch rush. They even entertained my son as we ate so we could enjoy our meals. The owner's of this restaurant also own the Dick's Cafe in Mesilla, and the 2 Chilito's Mexican Restaraunt locations in Las Cruces. Tables were dirty. It took about five minutes before someone went to our table. Took approx 30 after that to get our food (the food was good). My total came out to $49.58. I gave them a $15 certificate from restaurant.com that i had so it would come down to $34.58 plus a $5 tip totaling $39.58. However i checked my bank account today and i was charged the full amount plus tip totaling $54.58. THE $15 WERE NOT DISCOUNTED FROM THE TOTAL BILL. Now i will have to drive up to this business and dispute the charge and possibly file a dispute with my bank. UPDATE 9/10/2016. I contacted the owner Ace to advise of the situation, he said he would issue me a refund, he even got my card number and expiration date but no credit has been issued. Dick's Cafe is a typical greasy spoon cafe. Standard local fare along with American favorites. Their burgers are excellent as are their fries. Unlike Day's burgers "patties", the meat at Dick's is actually visible to the unaided human eye. One of the best things about Dick's is the waitresses. They aren't the most efficient in the business, they are just college girls trying to make some money, not professionals. And most of them are pretty cute. Horrible coffee, long service, There were 3 to 5 employee's just hanging out talking, while there was just me and my uncle sitting there waiting for our food, by the time I got my omelet, Too greasy and knew something was wrong with the food products on my plates. When you call for curbside you are asked to come inside. So there is no curbside although the sign says there is...and the food was not served as requested. Nine of us ordered carry out which consisted of green chili cheeseburgers and we got the food home and it was nowhere near what we ordered. Plus, the burgers were not fixed the way we ordered them. We ended up going back to the restaurant to get our orders fixed. The food actually tasted okay but we won't be back here. It cost big bucks for a so so meal that was less than stellar. I won't recommend this restaurant to anyone. They don't seem like they care about the food they serve. read more
