So I needed a little something to bribe my little one with and, of course, the only store within walking distance would be Dick's Liquor. While little bottles of tequila or vodka may amuse my child for a while, I was looking for something a bit more sweet and less sloshy. Good thing they did have a decent candy selection in the store and we managed to pick up a few treats that saved the day (or lunch anyway). I did ask the person behind the counter if they had any Old Vine Zins and he pointed me to the "other" room (closed off, controlled temperature perhaps?). Crass name, I know, but this is the perfect little spot to pick up some gum, cigarettes or other vice-laden items such as chocolate covered liquors that make for the perfect dessert. Dick's liquor is located in one of the most expensive zip codes, but I think it is one of the most practical shops in the area, specifically because they sells tons of cheap mini bottles of liquor. My girlfriend lives right around the corner from Dick's Liquor and was excited to take me there last night as during our fervent search for grape or potato vodka. We didn't have to look far, as there was actually a large selection and well, it was the first place we had tried. The store had a great selection of alcohol (including Kosher wines), the employees were super friendly pretty hilarious and knowledgeable as well. My father Harold Jurgensen used to own this shop a decade or more ago, I remember sitting in the back room playing and my dad always working and having fun with the locals. Good times, especially with Don Carlos next door. The current owner is great and really cares about customer service. WOW! The selection at this establishment is mind blowing. And the prices are amazing. Adam helped me out when I was looking for a different type of rum and Adam showed me this brand called el dorado and I was extremely impressed. I recently started work in La Jolla and discovered this place right next to Don Carlos Taco Shop on one of my lunch breaks. I popped in for a second and knew I'd need to come back. They have an impressive selection of alcohol and and walk in humidor with some fantastic cigars. The staff is knowledgable and friendly. Sure it's not as big or cheap as Bevmo, but I always seem to find myself coming here instead. read more

So here's the thing, i've lived in La Jolla for a good portion of my life and when I was a kid I loved going to Dick's cause of the Deli. About 6 years ago, the new owner's took it out, WHY? Now it's a liquor store without the best deli shop in La Jolla. The owner Adam Barno is a character, allway's fun to chat with and has a smile regardless if he work's his but off along with his two brother's, Art who help's at Dick's and Jacob who run's their other store in Del Mar. Basically I guess the moral of the review is you can't find a better bargain and deal in La Jolla unless you go to Dick's and chat it up with Adam or Art. They have it all and are the best priced and most knowledgeable of wine's and liquors as well the coldest beer's in all of San Diego. If your ever in town stop off there say "hi" and go next door to Don Carlos and get a burritto. Love you guy's and thanks for the great business. read more
