I have been to Dimes many, many times. There is just something different about the food at Dimes. It's fresh, tasty, simple and has items that I do not see at a lot of other NYC restaurants. It's unpretentious. I usually get either the chia or acai bowl to share and for entrees I like the tuna nori wrap, egg tacos, salads, and toast. I like how everything is seasonal - they change up what's in the salads and bowls and toasts depending on what's in season or fresh. I deducted a star because the service is a little slow and not super friendly, but I think that's just part of the Dimes experience :-) read more

The food is delicious, and decor cute. BUT, they need to radically improve their hiring and training. It IS possible to find people in NYC who are friendly and thoughtful. They have no warmth, speak in whispers, toss the bill onto tables (I watched all the tables) with no eye contact or kindness or basic appreciation. Superb Generous BLT with rough hewn crisp thick bacon, spicy avocado, super fresh red and green leaf soft lettuce, all on a semi-primitive multigrain sliced bread. Something special. Loved the casual, neighborhood feel, non claustrophobic atmosphere. Outstanding service and cool friendly relaxed fellow dinners. Photo is from doggie bag. A friend in California suggested I try out this restaurant, so I went with some friends, knowing nothing else about it. It's pricey for what it is: pretty, well thought-out, but ultimately mediocre food. Everything was either under seasoned or the opposite. I had the poached salmon--the salmon was perfectly tender, but the whole thing decidedly on the tasteless side. I tried a friend's half chicken-again, great texture, but disappointingly salty. Restaurant atmosphere is pretty open despite the size. Definitely need bigger water carafes. Service was slow, but it was a packed Friday night with a waitlist. Hostess was really kind and responsive. Their deli is a great place to wait for a table. Drinks were nice and well balanced. Beers were small for the price. Decent wine pour. Food portions were small to medium. Chef definitely favors bitter flavors. The Cesar salad dressing was well balanced, but the greens were unwashed, sandy, and overly bitter. They put a kink in an otherwise delicious dish. I let them know, but not sure if they got the message. Lettuce cups needed more texture- flavor was great. However, if there's shrimp, I don't want it completely minced and lost in the mix. The burrata needed to be a bigger portion and the whole dish needs more salt. The texture of the charred kale was wonderful, though the seasoning was a bit heavier than necessary. The quinoa was pretty well balanced- the spicy kale was great, but you couldn't really taste kale. Otherwise, the dish had great flavors when combined. The chicken was perfect. Nice crispness, good fava beans, bright greens on top. Also, perfectly cooked chicken and potatoes. Would really just like the chicken dish again. Love this little hidden gem! The food was amazing; I got the tacos (the mango salsa is to die for) and my friends got the breakfast sandwich! Also the Bloody Mary is perfectly spicy and delicious! We got lucky and didn't have to wait but be prepared to bc the place is small. You're in and out fairly quickly tho so it shouldn't be too long. read more

Discriminating establishment. My husband and I were told that they could "give us the bar seats" but not a table despite there being many tables for the time they allowed us to sit at the bar. They did not allow us to look at menus and told us after we asked why we were not being treated fairly to leave and took our water glasses away. Scary. Pretty health conscious menu with lots of grain bowls and salads, if you're after a more rustic brunch Pies'n'Thighs down the street might be more of a fit. A very hipster cafe with hipster waiters. We ordered the strawberry acai bowl, mango pittaya bowl, chia pudding, love toast and BLT. The acai bowls were beautiful to look at but in terms of taste it was too icy and not enough flavor or sweetness. I don't like a lot of sugar in my food, but true acai bowls and chia pudding were just very bland. read more

My friend ordered the roasted chicken bowl for me. It was pretty decent, although our other friends did not much like their food. The real crime here were the utensils they gave us. We came here for weekend brunch. Giving the food 4 stars: we had the tuna nori wrap and breakfast hash. Both were tasty. The ambiance gets 3 stars. It was loud! Small economical restaurant with a diverse menu. It is hard to find a good Acai bowl in NYC at a decent price or a good take on eggs that goes beyond your normal fare. The place has it all and more. Try the wheatgrass drinks - innovative, delicious and light for brunch I had an acai bowl and my friend had the egg sandwich - each item was priced at less than $10. What an odd little place. The most extraordinary thing about our visit last night was the cold. It was FREEZING in the restaurant. Colder than it was outside. I had my jacket, hat and scarf on the whole time. When I finally asked why it was so cold, I was told that the heater was broken. I thought it was weird that they didn't offer tea or something to help ease the cold. Because of the cold, I couldn't tell if one of my dishes was good. The black rice came to the table warm and then quickly got cold. I barely touched it. The sea bass was good though. The waitstaff was fine though a bit aloof but they were obviously cold too. I don't know if I would go back--certainly not until it's warm outside. I enjoyed the food and even the atmosphere but the cold--man, it was really incredible. read more

Stopped by for a late mid-week breakfast recently and I was pleasantly surprised. The space is small and was completely packed with patrons but there was still a good, pleasant vibe. I had coffee and the breakfast sandwich with bacon. I was worried that a sandwich alone wouldn't be substantial enough for me but it was large and very filling. It came with hot sauce and jalapeños yet wasn't overwhelmingly intense. My friend got the Moroccan poached eggs and I sampled a small bite- also delicious! I saw some poor reviews on here about the service but our waiter came by several times to refill our cups and I thought he was really prompt despite the crowd. All in all, I had a great meal and I'm looking forward to returning the next time I'm in the city. read more

Hands down, the worst service on the LES. No other restaurants even come close. If you can get the blase, self absorbed waitstaff to actually refill your coffee or get your check, the hilarious attempt to do so will be quite entertaining. The food is good enough...fresh, healthy, and tasty. Not cheap but not crazy expensive either. The decor is great, in its own way...like a colorful nursery school classroom for hipsters. The service is miserable though, with the servers being more interested in chatting with each other than to attending to basic stuff like refilling water, cleaning the filthy table next to you, checking in after they brought the meal. This is my favorite brunch place downtown. Great vegetarian items, super friendly staff, wonderful ambiance and all around good eats. The Huevo Kathmando is my most frequent craving and paired with Love Toast or one of their fantastic lemonades (my favorite is the Pepper Rose Lemonade) I feel stuffed and rejuvenated every time I stop by. The coffee is good and all of their flavors are strong and bold and exciting. It is a little pricey, but you get what you pay for and more. I hope I am in the neighborhood soon. read more

Although there was a 20 min wait on a Saturday brunch time it was totally worth it. The acai bowl, the chicken cous cous and coffee were perfect. We came here with some friends for diner. There are 3 different Dimes so be careful!. There is Dimes Grocery, Dimes Takeout, and Dimes Restaurant all within a few feet from each other!. When we finally realized which Dimes, I immediately thought it was so cute! Its quite small, tight tables, and candles lit. Super romantic and cute. We ordered some cocktails which was OK, nothing too tasty, and we ordered the Spicy Shrimp on Toast, the Summer Salad, the Pulled Pork & Rice. First they don't serve soft drinks, so don't ask. Their food is mediocre, nothing tasty or somewhere I would bring people. The decor and lighting is much more fancy than the actual food. It didn't taste horrible, but I would come here alone to grab lunch. The servers are kind, but they lack sense of urgency and they don't clean at all. The server spilled water when he was filling our glasses, and he never came back to wipe it off. After food, no one ordered desert because we assumed it would be mediocre like the food. The menu is on the healthy earthy side so there isn't anything savory really. Again, I would come here for a salad if I ever bass by. read more

The bougiest place I've ever eaten. $6 for one slice of toast with a mixture of flavors that didn't go together at all. 5 or 6 dollars for their "juice of the day" which is basically just a mix of whatever they feel like throwing together. The first time I came to Dimes back in November I had a pretty good experience. The food was really delicious and fresh, so I was very excited to bring my family here last weekend when they were in town. We came in at about 11 am on Sunday Feb 28th, so the place was pretty full (I think there was only 1 table open). I stood waiting at the door for a few minutes before I finally flagged down a server. I asked the guy how long the wait was for 5 people to which he grimaced and responded "I don't know" . That probably should have been my first sign. That was literally all he said to me. So I repeated the question in a different way 'how long till a table will open for us' and he said something along the lines of we could fit at a booth if we could squeezed 3 people into one side. I was with my mom, dad, brother, and his girlfriend so I knew there was no way that would work. I asked if we could add a table to end of the booth and he said "no". I just found that to be very odd because he didn't explain why he just said No. Even when I was confused as if I misheard him and asked again "so we can't pull up a chair?". Once again I got a "no" with no offer whatsoever to try and make it work for my family to get a place to sit. So then I asked if we could just combine several tables together to which he said "well it's not like 3 tables are going to magically be open next to each other". Word for word said exactly that to me. I remember because I felt like I was dreaming like did I seriously hear this guy just say that to me? I was honestly so shocked by this response that I was sort of speechless. It seemed like this guy legitimately didn't want to seat me and my family. I've never gone to a restaurant and had to suggest ways for them to fit my group in to get a meal. I told him we would wait to which he grudgingly just asked for my name and wrote it on a notepad he had, and then walked away literally giving me NO indication whether or not he was even going to try to arrange this for us. We waited outside for 10 minutes until I got so upset that my family and I just left to go somewhere else. I honestly still don't understand what happened. Does Dimes normally refuse to seat 5 people in their restaurant? If so they should really make that more clear somehow with signs or a statement or something. And if they do seat larger parties then I am still seriously confused as to why the waiter wasn't willing to save those seats for us even though we said we would wait however long needed for them to be open. I was very polite and patient with the server when I was talking to him. I'm not sure why he didn't want to seat us but for whatever reason he didn't act like he wanted to. And while the last time I went the food was good, I'm sorry to say that I'm never coming back. It's definitely not worth it to deal with the rude, unfriendly staff at this establishment. Judging from the other reviews on here this place has serious service issues and maybe this Yelp review will help the owners realize they need to make some changes. "It's not like 3 tables are going to magically be open next to each other" is NOT an appropriate thing to say to customers, and letting your employees speak to people like that is a good way to make sure they never come back again. read more

Food: B- Considering the wait in the drizzly weather outside, the food was not worth really worth it. Among three people, we ordered the Strawberry Acai Bowl, the Breakfast Sandwich, the BLT, and the Kedgeree. My BLT was good. The bread it came on was grainy with lots of different oats, but it was still chewy and probably packed full of gluten, and I really liked it. There was an avocado spread in the sandwich, along with a couple of roasted cherry or grape tomatoes. Everything went well together in this sandwich - I only wish it was bigger and more for me to enjoy. It was somewhat small, as was the side salad it came with. The Breakfast Sandwich that my friend got just tasted like scrambled eggs in a bun - meh. The Kedgeree was interesting - it was bits of broken up smoked trout over basmati rice (little bit of curry flavor maybe?). There was fresh pomegranate in the dish, which I thought would be strange, but it was very subtle and paired well. The disappointing part of the dish was that the poached eggs on top were wayyy overcooked - the yolk was not runny in the least. It looked pretty much the texture of a hardboiled egg. Fail. Finally, the Strawberry Acai bowl. I was really looking forward to it, as I was craving something refreshing. The bowl had acai, topped with granola, dried apricot, bee pollen, and fresh strawberries and sliced banana. Out of the three of us, none of us were impressed. It wasn't too sweet, which I liked, but there was very little acai and a whole LOTTT of granola. We ate all the fresh fruit and tried to spoon out as much of the pureed acai as we could, but we were still left with a ton of mushy granola covered in puree. Service: B- The service was alright, at best. The girl who waited our table was quiet, which is fine. They did the bare minimum to make us comfortable. One of our water glasses was dirty and she replaced it without complaint. *shrug* Nothing really bad but nothing amazing. Ambiance: C+ I feel like this place tries to pull off the somewhat quirky/quaint/don't-care-about-appearances-because-our-food's-good type of place, but it doesn't work. My friends and I were seated at a very oddly shaped table in the front corner of the restaurant, with wooden benches along the wall to sit on. The way the seating of our table was arranged, it was like we were placed in an "L" shape, with my two friends sitting on the long side of the "L" and I was sitting on the short part of the "L." It was cramped - we were shmushed alongside the other tables against the front of the restaurant with very little room between to walk through. Luckily there was a consistent buzz of noise throughout our time there so we could still talk comfortably. Other: Their waiting area inside by the door is superrrr small, enough seating/space for only a couple people, and while they have a small bench outside, it was wet due to the rain. There were several parties standing outside with us as well. If you get here past 11am for brunch/lunch, you're probably due to wait a bit. read more

This place is totally great - I'm surprised that the reviews are just ok. We came for dinner and loved loved loved the wheatgrass margarita. Refreshing, exciting, different, grassy, earthy and nicely complemented with a fresh beet chip. The food is fresh and novel and the fresh ingredient combinations reminds me a california cuisine. Do not be surprised to see black rice, quinoa, faro and other exciting things on the menu. All protein are carefully and nicely paired with greens and promotes healthy eating. The decor of the place is totally cute and retro.The furniture almost reminds me of the 70s (aka grandma furniture) and the only thing missing is shag carpet. Actually shag carpet can probably help with the acoustics. The reason I have avoided this place before (even though I live right around the block) is because everytime I walk by, all I notice is how loud the place it. I guess I have to blame the poor acoutic architecture of the place such that even a few people can compound the low level decibels. The place was awesome in the beginning since my friend and I came for an early dinner but by the end of the night, i found myself screaming- which is par for the course for nyc dining.
