I ordered Szechuan Beef combo for pick up. When I got there, they had prepared Szechuan Chicken. They asked if I would accept the chicken. I was not happy as that is not what I ordered. I even showed them the receipt on my phone when they questioned me. It would be a 20 - 25 minute wait if I wanted the beef. I said I would take the chicken, but they did not even refund me the $1 difference in the price between the two meals. I live nearby, but I had never really even noticed Ding How before. It's located in a bit of an odd spot at the end of a strip mall, hidden behind "I Love Sushi" and a small boba shop. I ordered a dim sum plate and the special fried rice. Unfortunately, they were out of something (I don't remember what), but the woman at the counter offered to make up for it with extra wontons, which was good enough for me. The dim sum was good; the pork bun was fantastic, everything else was okay, so it averages out. By the time I started on the rice I was already full, and the portion was massive. It tasted much better than I expected. It had a nice mix of meats, though it was a bit oily. All in all, this is a great place to go for some takeout or a low-key dinner. read more

I remembered it as better. Tomato beef came with no noodles *perhaps my fault* but it was literally tomatoes and beef- and a whole lot of sugar it seemed. I guess that's what I'd ordered though. Maybe it's better for dim sum? I thought I was ordering just a pancake of noodles for under the tomato beef but I managed to order the house special noodles. They have an entire menu of Vegan options, thought that was super cool. Most places have a small selection of options but this place has basically everything in a vegan option. VEGAN FOOD GALORE Holy smokes I wish I knew about this place 2 years ago! They have the BEST selection of vegetarian options of any Chinese restaurant I've been to, but great meat dishes as well! My veggie girlfriend got the Vegan Sweet & Sour "Chicken" and the Vegan "Beef" & Broccoli. Both were delicious with great imitation meat texture. I am omni, I got the Sweet & Sour Pork, General Tso's Chicken, and the Peking Beef and all 3 dishes were incredible. We split a Vegetable Chow Mein as well, which was quite good, and I got some Hot and Sour soup (with pork in it!) that was the best I've ever had. I understand that this place is an institution in Davis, and that its major graces are that it consistently serves a well- (and sometimes over-) cooked version of Chinese strip-mall food, it is nearby, and it is a local tradition. That said, the food is a sad imitation, with sugar-laced and cornstarch-thickened sauces, mostly with minimal flavor. Szechuan spice seems to be merely a technique using a mildly-spiced cloudy red sauce that doesn't taste as if it has any Szechuan spice at all. This is a kind of Chinese food that Chinese immigrants who desired to start restaurants thought would appeal to Caucasians, and the style is suffused in restaurants and grocery stores throughout the nation. Sweet (or sweet and sour) deep-fried and overcooked food. Thick, translucent sauces; lots of fried rice. What is surprising to me is that, for over a half-century, authentic Chinese food of much better and more sophisticated quality could easily be found in San Francisco and Oakland, places accessible, even then, in a half-day drive, at most. I don't begrudge you eating here, and even enjoying it, because sometimes it's not about the food, but the people. But please don't try to convince me that the food is the best you've had, and that the service is good (because, mostly, it's not). Before coming into Ding How, I was not a fan or even ever tried vegetarian food. Why go for the fake stuff when you can have real hearty beef and pork and chicken? However, after a coming to Ding How, I realized how wrong I was. Vegetarian food can be in fact incredibly delicious and tasty when made right. And it sure was made right at Ding How. The food here is absolutely scrumptious! It definitely changed my mind about vegetarian food. My friend and I ordered the vegetarian string beans with beef (spicy) and hot & sour soup. At first look, the beef looked exactly like real beef. However the texture of the "beef" was not so beefy. It had a really chewy and you can actually tell that is wasn't meat. But I have to say its the best your going to get with imitation meat. It was stirred fried with sting beans and the string beans were cooked perfectly. Some places over cook the string beans but here, it was a perfect crunchy cook. We wanted it spicy and the cook gave a good amount spice. We also got hot & sour soup. It was yummy. It was almost creamy with a lot of stuff in it including mushroom tofu, bamboo shoots. It quite spicy too, I didn't even have to add any ground peppers. It is a full service restaurant; It actually quite fancy. The host/waiter was wearing black slacks and white button up. We came in and the waiter sat us in a booth. It was only him running the tables, but the place is really small maybe 6 tables good for 2 and about 4 tables good for four. He brought us water and hot tea, while our tea cups, plates, and utensil were already on the table. We had a couple question and he answered us clearly. We actually order the vegetarian Mongolian beef adding string beans but the chef came out and ask us if we just wanted the vegetarian beef with string beans with the spiciness of the Mongolian beef. Of course, that is what we got. Food came out really quick, thank goodness because we were hungry. Our waiter kept on coming by to check on us and and water was always filled. For being in Davis, this place is actually decent. It has a huge vegetarian menu so for all you Catholic folks in Davis, give this a place a try on your no meat Friday on this Lenten season! My friend kept raving about the vegetarian choices at ding how so we went today to give it a shot. I've been to Ding How plenty of times before and honestly didnt really care much for it. But since I've never had any of their vegetarian dishes before it's only fair I try some of their veggie dishes before i pass judgment on this place. We order the family dinner which came with egg flower soup, egg rolls, cashew chicken and we substituted the sweet and sour pork for the vegetarian sweet and sour pork. For a while, we were the only customers in the restaurant. After about 5 minutes, a clearly upset couple walks right now. The guy was whispering into the waiters ears for quite some time before the waiter went over to the girl and started talking to her. Turns out the last time the couple was at ding how, they ordered some vegetarian dishes but only after they had finished their food did another waiter tell them the dish they just ate was not the vegetarian version they had ordered :O! After hearing that my friend and i just looked at each other and was like WOW, that's pretty messed up. The waiter ended up giving them a free meal to make up for the traumatizing experience. As for our food, everything seemed fine. The egg flower soup wasn't bad (although it was kinda flavor less), the meat egg rolls WERE HUGE! and the meat inside wasn't dry like i had expected. The cashew chicken was TASTY! and had jicama in it (my favorite!) and the vegetarian sweet and sour pork was really good! it tasted like it was real pork! (which made us question for a bit if it really was!) the only bad thing was the sweet and sour pork didn't come with the bell peppers i liked :( After we were done eating, we had one piece of cashew chicken left so we decided to finish it so we can leave. As I was about to put the chicken to my mouth i saw this THICK BLACK HAIR on it! omg it looked like pubes! needless to say, i felt a little sick after seeing that. Egg fu yong was one of the dishes ordered for takeout and the bottom layers were basically covered in egg shells!!! The last bottom piece was literally burnt and was not edible!!! AND worst of all, they over-charged!!! The cashier was impatient and rude when asked to double check the total and still gave the wrong total at the end. But got home and saw that they had an online ordering option, tried it and officially confirmed that they overcharged at least $5. I tipped at the time and wished i didnt. I'm surprised at how low some of these ratings are! Overall, 3.5/5! Gotta be choosing the right dishes! I have had their lunch specials before and I find the soup meh. I never finish it. Aside from that, I am an avid buyer of chicken & corn soup. It's cheap, it's healthy-looking, and it's my go-to meal for when I'm sick! If you find you need more kick to it, you should just try it with more black pepper added to it. That's what I always do with egg soup. The honey walnut shrimp was good too! I feel a little guilty having it though since it has all this awesome white sauce around it, with your shrimp being crisp after breading (or tempura -- I get mixed up between the two). Their lunch menu (usually around $4.95-$7.95) consist of soup, fried rice, chow mein, and egg roll with a choice of entree. I chose my Honey Walnut Prawns (which turned out to be $7.95). The fried rice was bland and a little dry. The egg roll was nasty and mushy. Yuck. And my honey walnut prawns was alright.. smaller order than what I usually get and my walnuts were a little burnt. How disappointing. I really don't think I'll come back here again. I'm actually surprised Ding How received such high reviews from fellow yelpers... =/ On the plus side, they're service was friendly and patient. I wouldn't say this was the worst place to grab some Chinese food, but I give them 2 stars for effort and friendly service. read more

After reading the reviews of insects galore here, I was super wary of trying this place, but needless to say I was pleasantly surprised. The fake roses at every table were tacky cute and the whiteboard with menu doodles up front didn't match the atmosphere of a chinese restaurant so I saw lots of people getting takeout instead. They have some items you don't see at Hunan downtown, like the Chin Jiu chicken. There's a screen up front with a slideshow of some special items, so that will help you make your decision. The plates are small for the price but it's worth a drive if you live on the other side of town. read more

This restaurant probably has some of the most realistic and delicious vegan dishes I've ever had. Prices are pretty good for what you actually get. Every meal provides a decent portion of food. My wife and I often have to get to go boxes because we can never finish the meals we ordered. If you're vegan, many of the vegetarian dishes will have you wondering or even asking the staff if it really is vegan. But be assured that it is. The staff is very knowledgeable when it comes to serving those on a vegan diet. The only things you have to specifically ask them to not bring you is the fortune cookie (which is not vegan.) And I would be careful about some of the sauces that come with a few of the vegan dishes. We received a sauce that tasted like it might have been worcestershire sauce. Great service. Very friendly. You don't typically have to worry about order mistakes here if you're vegan. They even will inform you if something has egg in it if you are ordering off their vegetarian menu. The menu says vegetarian, but most of everything you see on the vegetarian menu is vegan. If it is not, the staff will tell you. Some recommendations from my wife and I. These are some of the best dishes we've had. We haven't tried them all but we've tried many of the vegetarian menu dishes. - Vegetarian Sesame seed chicken - Vegetarian Twice Cooked Pork - Any of the Vegetarian Beef is good. - Vegetarian Spicy Tofu. For the most part, you'll just have to do trial and error to find the dishes you like and which ones you don't like but almost all the dishes are delicious. Even though the menu items are called pork, beef, chicken, prawns, or fish, these are not actually the actual thing when you refer to them as the vegetarian options. Some of the soups do have egg in them however. This place should definitely be on any vegan's list of favorite places to eat if you're in the area. read more

I've always had excellent service and quality food when I've been here. My girlfriend loves vegetarian options and this place is not short of that. At first I was reluctant to try this place since Silver Dragon was my go-to spot for Chinese, but after trying this place, I never went back to Silver Dragon. The food here is just a higher quality, and I am always tempted to try new things here because the menu has a lot of variety. The feel of the place is also more intimate, which is always nice.
