This place lives up to its reputation. Walked in for lunch on a Thursday and was seated immediately. The staff was all very attentive, kept my drink filled, and checked in frequently. I ordered the "tres niños" which is a massive amount of food for the price. All three of the meats were delicious and the mango habanero bbq sauce at the table is amazing. The Mac and cheese was also a huge highlight for a side dish. The sweet tea is also delicious. It's exactly what a sweet tea should taste like. The interior is very warm and cozy feeling. How I have failed to acknowledge Dinosaur BbQ up to this point is beyond me. This is an American institution! The biker bar turned American bbq joint has been wining over the hearts of Syracuse for over 35 years now. Pulled pork, chicken wings, ribs, steak, brisket....its a meat lovers paradise. The food is always enjoyable. Personally, the wings are the go to for me. Huge, meaty, saucy! The deviled eggs are also a delight. I usually try to stay away from bbq outside of Texas, but this is one of my few exceptions. It's distinctly Syracuse, so much so that it can't really be compared to other bbq. This place is a well oiled machine with impeccable service! And above else, the atmosphere and vibe at Dinosaur BBQ alone is worth the trip. Right in the heart of Syracuse, it was each to get to and there is plenty of street parking nearby. The aesthetic of the restaurant was so cool and really matched the barbecue vibe: neon signs, wooden tables and murals on the wall. It was definitely busy but the staff was quick, efficient and served us in an extremely timely manor. They were all super kind and hospitable. The ribs were FANTASTIC, they practically fell off the bone they were so juicy. The cornbread was delicous and the deviled eggs surpassed my expectations. Went this past Saturday with friends visiting from Connecticut. They needed their ribs and the good did not disappoint. The wait was an hour for 6 but it was worth it and we enjoyed some dbq hangar ales before being seated. Once we were seated service was superb, never had to wait long for our waitress even with how packed it was. Ordered our drinks immediately with an appetizer, the chili nachos with pulled pork. Our friends got the sweet heart platter and my boyfriend got the power couple platter and I got the pulled pork platter. Everything came out hot and delicious. Went here for lunch and it was a truly amazing experience! We'd been here before so we kinda knew what to expect, but it exceeded those expectations! We (a party of 5) had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated, but seeing that it was a holiday, we completely understood. Our server (wish I'd gotten her name to shout her out) was excellent and very accommodating! We ordered the 3 meats combo (pulled pork, brisket, and ribs), the 13 wings (Korean and garlic chipotle) and the half roasted chicken. Everything was delicious! The pulled pork was super juicy, the brisket was melt-in-your-mouth tender, the ribs slid right off the bone, the Korean wings were a good balance between sweet and spicy while the garlic chipotle was a balanced heat. The chicken was moist and juicy, the sautéed greens side was surprisingly good, with some bacon in it to offer some texture. The Mac and cheese was unreal!!!! The cornbread and coleslaw were exactly what I've come to expect from this place! If you've never been here before, then the decor might catch you a bit off guard because of its retro rock/punk style but you get used to it after a while. I ended up getting the 4 for the road sauce pack because it was a tremendous deal: 4 of their specialty sauces for only $15! What a great place! From the speedy service and friendly servers, to the amazing food. It definitely has an eclectic ambiance. I sat at the bar and the chairs were comfy and the drink was tasty. My food came out quickly and everything from the sides to the main was delicious. The ribs were juicy and fall off the bone tender. The coleslaw had a nice tang to it from vinegar. Dino is an institution. What more is there to say? I recently stopped in to get their cajun deviled eggs. I've said it before and will say it again - many BBQ places phone it in on their vegetarian sides, but these babies are a home run. I did notice on the menu that they have more vegetarian options (actual entrees) than when I'd gone many years ago, so maybe I'll have to come back for a bigger meal. Right off the bat: this place truly lives up to all the hype! Although I gave it 5 stars, there were a couple "it could be better" situations for me personally. Pros: the brisket. Enough said. The fresh fries were great and the pulled pork as well. However, there was very little pimento cheese - and as a self proclaimed pimento cheese connoisseur, I was disappointed. Coleslaw: the flavor was pretty good, creamy and tangy. However the cabbage was really rough and thick cut. Sweet tea came with a lemon slice; Southern way is no lemon or politely ask if guest would like lemon in their sweet tea. I will admit it was the best sweet tea I have had in all of New York. Tried the appetizer "creole deviled eggs" and they were good but a little heavy on the dill. Mac & cheese, BBQ beans w/pork, and the mashed potatoes with gravy all had an overwhelming pepper taste. The mac & cheese did not have much of a cheese flavor at all. On the menu was listed as simmered greens with smoked turkey, so before ordering I inquired with the waitress whom confirmed they were collard greens, however, they tasted and looked like mustard greens or a mix of. Also had a strong peppery taste, but was the best thing when paired with the cornbread. They did not have any Louisiana hot sauce I could add, so I added some of theirs (Dinosaur garlic habanero hot sauce) and it made the greens taste better. The cornbread by itself was very dry and lacking flavor. The ribs were very fall off the bone tender, but were also lacking in flavor, mainly missing that smoky flavor I was expecting based on the menu description. Overall, I think this place is marketed as southern BBQ, but nothing tasted like any authentic southern BBQ or sides I have ever had in southern states which was initially a disappointing surprise. I went back on a Saturday after an SU game. I suggest enjoying bars downtown and then making your way over to Dino. You're probably going to have a wait, likely the minimum of an hour, so put your name in and either go to the bar or try out any of the other bars in walking distance. They'll text you when your table is ready. I'm not sure how long you have to get back, but NYC has a pretty standard 15 minute time frame. Service is great. The ambiance is straight up cool. This used to be an old biker bar, which is now a family friendly environment, but has still managed to retain its heritage. VERY COOL. Is this the best BBQ in the U.S.? No...and you're not going to find that in NY of all places. In my experience, BBQ outside of a few states, especially in NY is worth skipping. Dinosaur is an exception to that rule. It's just plain solid BBQ for whatever state you're in. Is there better? Sure, absolutely. But you're in Upstate NY and you're having arguably the best BBQ in the entire state (outside of what you smoke at home). I highly recommend coming here. The meats are quality (Prime beef, Duroc pork), the sides have unique twists to them, service is great, the beer selection is solid and it's cold. Can't complain one bit.
