They have great salmon patties and I am also a big fan of their cold plate featuring an awesome array of chicken salad, fruit and veggies! The Collards had a bit more vinegar then my personal taste but the restaurant has a welcoming feel and does not dissapoint. They also have some good pimento cheese. We placed our order came 5 min early to pick up and everything was ready, hot and the customer service over the phone and in person was very friendly. One of my favorite restaurants in Charlotte. I've been here for the first date with my wonderful boyfriend, with his parents from out of town, with my parents from out of town, with out of town professional guests, to try collard greens for the first time, to have a DELICIOUS relaxing dinner with friends, and I could go on. The entire menu is mouthwatering. I love the meatloaf because it's just spicy enough to be interesting, but not so spicy that I need my biscuit, I get to savor the biscuit and deivlled egg. I tried the coffee rubbed ribeye steak, which is new on the menu. It was absolutely delicious. Be aware, though, that if you like your meat on the rare side, it comes out more medium because of the fact that it is slow cooked and it isn't possible to make it any more rare than a hint of pink. Normally I wouldn't care for it, but this steak was so sublimely delicious and tender that it just didn't matter. If you're like me, and like your meat more rare, try this dish anyway and just know it's going to be more medium than medium rare. In this case, it doesn't matter. The delicious sauce they put on more than makes up for the lack of rareness in the meat. I can't describe the sauce other than to say it is addictive and almost umami. This restaurant clearly started with a very fresh and high quality cut of meat and then slow cooked it until tender. Someone in that kitchen knows what they're doing. Do yourself a favor and try this dish while it's on the menu. I hope they keep it because I'm going back as soon as I can. read more

Not really impressed with the food here. It's more cafeteria style plated food. It's all prepared food in the back that they scoop out of hot containers onto your plate. I got the veggie plate, so I would have the opportunity to sample several items from the menu. The only thing I would recommend getting from the veggie side is the collard greens, they were pretty good. Aside from the food, the service here was excellent. A little down home, southern place with lots of hospitality. I will not be returning here, but I would recommend trying this place out just for the experience. read more

I tried this because it was on Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I try to visit a location from the show everytime im visiting a new city. The food was okay. I had the salmon cakes with mac and cheese and collard greens. It came out a little cold/warm, but not hot fresh off the stove. It wasnt bad by any means but nothing to write home about (except for then biscuits, best I ever had!!!). I would eat it again but it wouldn't be a must have. I've given them two tries to impress me. Both times they failed. First time in I tried their most expensive entree, shrimp and grits, a Southern staple. The shrimp were okay but the grits and the odd mix of herbs or whatever was supposedly in the grits was very nondescript and practically tasteless; basically just unseasoned white grits with 6 shrimp thrown on top. Definitely not worth the price. Second trip; I never judge a restaurant based on one trip unless it's horrible, I ordered a hamburger, a simple staple anywhere. I figured with their rep they certainly wouldn't screw it up but I was wrong. I ordered the burger with Swiss and grilled onions. I got a 5 ounce paddy, very dry and well done, obviously cooked earlier that day, not to order. I asked for medium. One thin slice of cheese left a thin remnant on top of the burger, and maybe a tablespoon of grilled onions, and 3 thin pickle slices on the side. Had to ask for mustard instead of the waitress asking me what condiments I preferred. Overall, not at all the experience one would expect from a place that even Food Network has visited or that charges what they do for food. So, I won't be back and will opt instead for other more reliable favorites in Charlotte. read more

I had an aggressive waitress that I wanted to strangle by the end of my meal. As I had the chance to look around (A LOT), I noticed other waitresses in this establishment are probably better. My waitress actually gave me a hard time about bringing a to go box, and I actually had to wait about 10 minutes after my drinks were empty to flag her down and ask for another. I'm never high maintenance and always laid back. But this girl could care less if I were there and paying her a tip. This was my second visit to Dish upon a prompting by my girlfriend to give it another try. The food was heavily salted (and I love good home cooked meals with salt). Service was too poor to return again. Really wish I had a better experience here. Was doing a short trip to Charlotte to check out the food scene and Dish came highly rated. I was excited that their menu had BBQ jackfruit as I had heard about it a while ago and have been wanting to try it. We sat down on their nice back patio, excited to order and we're told they were out for the night. It was a disappointment because it wasn't that late, and it kind of irritates me when restaurants run out of items (especially early in the evening). Perfect comfort food meal with the family tonight. The food was excellent, well seasoned and plentiful. The service was equally as good. To start we had the pimento cheese with tortilla chips. My favorite dish is the blackened chicken breast with the dixie caviar... delish! The fried green tomatoes make a fantastic appetizer. I had never had them until I tried them at Dish, and in the few times I've tried them at other places since, nowhere comes close to comparison. Definitely disappointed in dish tonight. Ordered the salmon patties, which I would never recommend to anyone, and they tasted like an open can of cat food. I let the server know after only taking several bites to which she quickly whipped back that they didn't take food off the check for not liking it. That policy is fine, I don't even oppose that policy, but that's not what I asked for, in fact I didn't ask for anything. She then retorted that she wouldn't have any idea what cat food taste like so she couldn't comment on that and walked off. A simple "I'm sorry about that" or "could I get you some more (side item) to make up for that" would have been a great other option to throw out there. The manager John was no better to deal with. We won't be back with the way they treat customers. read more

I ordered the grilled chicken livers, smoky lima beans, and salad. When the food was brought to the table there was watery blood running all over the plate. It was thoroughly disgusting. Nobody that knows anything about cooking would serve chicken livers rare. The limas were hard and had obviously been seasoned with what tasted like Liquid Smoke. We decided to come here last minute for a quick weekend lunch yesterday finally! We were quickly seated by the hostess and greeted by our quirky, nice server. She gave us plenty of time to decide, everything looked good it was hard to choose. I ended up ordering the salmon patties with mac and cheese and the special hashbrown casserole of the day. The bf ordered the chicken and dumplings with a side of the infamous mashed potatoes. The food took forever to come out, my stomach was literally grumbling. But, when it did it was a lot of food. Not as piping hot as I would have liked though. The loved the consistency and size of the salmon patties, there was good seasoning in there as well but, I wish they used fresh salmon instead of canned. Would have made a huge difference. My sides were good, had to add some seasoning to the mac and cheese and the hashbrown casserole was delish. I did not like the deviled egg, it was very bland and hard to eat. My bf really enjoyed his chicken and dumplings (not bad for 8 bucks) he however, and this is where I docked a star and a half, hated the mashed potatoes. It seems like someone smashed a potato crudely and placed it into the side cup. No seasoning or creamy component, and quite frankly it wasn't mashed with the proper smooth consistency one looks for in the traditional mashed potatoes. I had to play with it and had to add butter, salt, and pepper myself. Some cream would have been nice but, I didn't bother and just managed with what I had. Other than that, the biscuits were amazing...dirty little secret: I wanted to order more. I wasn't a fan of the white pepper gravy, I think I have been spoiled by the Flying Biscuit in this sense. The dining room makes me want to kick back on the porch with some lemonade. Best part, our bill came out to under $20. For all that food, its worth the price. Will be back to try more. read more

Very annoying when we planned on eating at a place that was supposed to be open but they just decided to close early. I have heard great things about Dish and FINALLY went to check it out last Friday. Honestly, you cannot beat the prices!! The food gives you that home cooked hearty meal feeling that just makes your taste buds feel grateful. I had the meatloaf and my boyfriend had the salmon patties. Both were absolutely mouth watering. Such a hot day! My craving was for a light, chilled salad, and Dish delivered. Fresh, crisp greens and yummy blue cheese dressing, complete with a biscuit. So much for gluten free; I ate that biscuit and enjoyed every soft, buttery mouthful. We also ordered a serving of their deviled eggs as an appetizer that were riddled in unctiious creaminess. My husband devoured his vegetable plate as well. Decent wine and beer selections with prices that don't require one to take out a loan. Impeccable, speedy, polite service. It's gotten really busy on the weekends so you will have to wait and I've noticed some of the staff can get annoyed on the weekends esp.if your whole party isn't there yet, but it's still worth it.
