I've been a loyal customer for years, but today, I had the worst service experience and food. I'm not sure if I'll be back. The service isn't the same anymore. First, it was extremely hot in the restaurant, with no air flow at all. We had to ask for a fan to be turned on. Second, our server was horrible. She never came to check on us once. She took our order and never came back until i asked for the check. It took very long to get service, food, and drinks. I was looking forward to my favorite key lime martini, which came with no Graham cracker rim. She stated they don't do that during the day only in the evening. That's never happened to me during the day. We ordered drinks before our food and I had to ask where our drinks were after we were eating. I had to ask for water as no one ever came to refill, especially as the restaurant was hot. I love the grilled cheese sandwiches (goddess & bourbon jam) and always get them. I asked for parmesan butter on the bread and got nothing. Today, they were both extremely dry, no butter on the bread, hardly any cheese, and the sandwiches were warm. The little cheese on there wasn't even melted. Lastly, we waited forever, and the bill never came. I had to ask several times, and I needed to go to the bartender to ask for my change as it never came to the table. I always leave 20% tip. Today, I left nothing. We both (my daughter-in-law) left sweating, red faces from overheating, and very disappointed. Went to eat lunch on Sunday and took a booth ... the noise level was extreme and super annoying ...my husband and I were yelling trying to understand each other's conversations! Even our server asked us multiple times what we wanted and lowered his head to hear us ... as for the food, it was pretty decent, but because of the intense noise level I wasn't comfortable or too hungry ! This place has a rustic, whimsical charm. In keeping with the down-home feel, the portions are hearty. Love the toasters on the table touch, too. Standouts: the portabello burger is delicious. It's also crammed with melted cheese and a wonderfully dressed arugula salad. It comes with a side and the sweet potato fries satisfy. The green grilled cheese boast avocado and also will knock your socks off. I'm the room on the right they have a long table that an accommodate large parties of up to 13. I've only been here for breakfast, so my review is limited to that. I'm picky about eggs. I like them exactly over medium, with runny, unbroken yolks. But every time, they are perfect. The English muffins are equally spot on. I've also had the oatmeal, and it's solid. Service is efficient but not in your face, and I've never felt rushed. Would definitely return. read more

Love this place for late breakfast and brunch! I've been coming here for years, even before I was a Yelper, and it remains my favorite local breakfast place. Their daily specials are always something to consider: Sweet Potato Hash, Salmon Benedict, Crunchy French Toast, Gingerbread Pancakes during the holidays. Their regular menu items are terrific too! Start with Gavina Kenya Dark Roast Coffee - their house coffee with endless refills for $3! Then move onto a choice of 10 different omelets / scrambles, their egg dishes- with a Benedict, Florentine, Breakfast Burrito, Veggie Brekkie Burrito and the Awesome DISH Brekkie Sandwich (Applewood Smoked Bacon, fried egg, sliced ham, cheddar cheese, on grilled sourdough- amazing!) Oh and their Hot Cakes! These make me go totally off-rail of my low-carb diet! The Cornmeal Jonnycakes are my very favorite! Savory corn flavor and add maple syrup- yummy! The Apple Oatcakes are another great item. Then there are the Banana Pancakes...choices choices. Get the sides of either: roasted brown sugar glazed ham or Shreiner's Sausage- either chicken or pork or the Applewood Smoked Bacon! You cannot lose any way you choose! It's all wonderful! This place isn't perfect and I would probably give it 3.5 stars if that was an option. However, if you get the right dish, Dish is a great place to eat when you want a break from some home cooking. My go to is the Braised Short Ribs. They have a rich sauce and the mashed potatoes are creamy and delicious. The vegetables are sometimes hit-or-miss as it was more of a miss the last time I went when it came with some overcooked asparagus. My wife went with the Ojai Chicken Salad. It was good though there was nothing standout about it, but a good choice if you want something with a little fruit and the honey mustard vinaigrette compliments the salad well. We bring our 13 year-old twin boys who always find something they like. The kids meals are a highlight, since there are plenty of options and it shows the restaurant takes the kids menu seriously instead of as an afterthought like most places. read more

First time at Dish. Rounding up a 3.5 star experience, due to several good dishes, and great service from Kelly. This is a comfort food haven, in a charmingly unique old building. They balance clean white walls with colorful handpainted tables, done in a folksy style. Old kitchen implements add to the memorabilia sprinkled around the rooms. There is a fascinating ceiling treatment in what was likely once a sunroof when this was once a house. Curved planks echo the shape of a boat hull. Several fireplaces add interest and warmth (literally) to the dining room and bar. We had originally gone as we had a gift certificate we'd won in a charity silent auction a few years ago. It didn't have an expiration date, but we were informed that they wouldn't accept it as it had been issued by the former owner. The new management had elected to not honor those deals. Hmm. We almost left, but the prices seemed fair, and Kelly was as nice as can be about the situation. She offered to have us speak with a manager. After a few minutes, a young woman came out from the kitchen. She had virtually no people skills, flatly informing us that there was nothing she could or would do. Okay. Throughout our meal time, this manager would wander aimlessly through the dining room, a scowl on her face, adding nothing to the diners' experience. I hope that she was only having a bad day, otherwise it doesn't seem like she's in the right business. The meatloaf dinner fortunately was excellent, as was the wedge salad. A side order of mac and cheese lacked something flavor wise, and would have benefitted from some type of crunchy topping. The wedge was so filling that I brought most of the pasta home, where it can be doctored for lunch. Kelly did graciously comp us a dessert as a gesture for the lack of acceptance of the gift certificate, plus the manager's lousy attitude. The key lime pie was obviously made on premises. Lusciously decadent, it could have used less sugar, but was still tasty. Felt like a locals' hangout. All prices were very fair for the quality and quantity, except Dear Hubby's beer. $8.50 for an 805 on draft? Ouch! read more

Met a colleague for breakfast. First of all I'm not a breakfast person but there were other options even at 10 am! I got the eggs Florentine with hash browns which was worth the calories. Hash browns were crispy and not soggy. Eggs were good. Generous portions. Reasonable prices. Server was attentive yet not intrusive. This round, I opted for the chicken and waffles. The waffles were not cheesy and there was barely a hint of meat from the bacon. The chicken was actually not horrible. It was moist, but tasted like standard chicken tender bar bites. The menu descriptions really talked up the dishes but didn't deliver. My husband got the chorizo scramble, and he said it was good, but again, nothing exceptional. I mean, it's not hard to mess up chorizo and eggs, but *shrug*. I think this might have been the last time that we'll go. It's a great spot for large parties, and there's almost always a wait time. Service is friendly. The tall, lanky young man with a mop of curls on his head was super-friendly, and went out of his way to try to find my friend, who had not yet arrived, as it turned out. "Is that her?" he asked, pointing to different women in the restaurant. When I explained I did not see her, he immediately sat me, and asked what I would like to drink. THAT is the kind of customer service I like to see. That is what differentiates a good restaurant from a great one. The "dish" I had was delicious, too. The salad was fresh with 5 large shrimp on top and the dressing was perfectly proportioned. Our every need was accommodated, and we felt our business was valued. We had no complaints. read more

After skimming a few reviews, I realized that this has been an ongoing problem-- though some people had worse experiences than I did. The whole restaurant experience felt like a very delayed process. It took a long time for the server to get to our table to take the order, it took a long time for the food to get out, we were never checked on... even the bill took a long time to get! Nevertheless, Dish is truly a home-y environment that serves a lot of traditional American foods. However, I have to admit that they're a bit pricey for what you get; but granted they try to use organic/free-range foods. I got a cheeseburger and it came out to be pretty massive. I'm still not sure if it was worth the money because it was set at a gourmet price. Flavor-wise, it was decent, and probably an above average cheeseburger. I also got a side of sweet potato fries. Unfortunately, these fries were pretty floppy and weren't too appealing. There's nothing too much to rave about this place, but the food isn't bad. I'd say the only downside is the price and the service. It's definitely still a nice sit-down restaurant that makes you feel at home. However, I'd be willing to come back to try some of their brunch/breakfast foods! read more

Regardless, the management from years past to the present has been attentive to any concerns I shared with them about service issues. What has been very good is the food either at breakfast, lunch or dinner. The variety of choices is very good. That brings us back with or without a coupon. What definitely makes me return is the Tuesday night skillet fried chicken. I'm a fried chicken-aholic and this satisfies my craving every time. The portion is perfect and the chicken is crunchy and flavorful. I haven't found anything locally that compares to this fried chicken and I have tried them all. Served with mashed potatoes, gravy, veggies and a huge homemade biscuit, it's the Sunday dinner many of us enjoyed as children. Love everything about this place. We have been going there for over 15 years and every time we r as satisfied as the first time. Their kids menu is pretty good. My kids love their blueberry teddy bear waffle with banana cream. The ambiance is really rustic and family friendly. The food has never disappointed us, no matter if its breakfast, lunch or dinner the consistency is there. The manager is one of the best professional I have ever met in the service industry, specially post covid where due to shortage of staff the service is just not there in most restaurants out there.
