My 2nd visit at the District was more disappointing than the first. I was there for brunch, the first time with my son only (we had egg Benedict and salmon). We sat on the patio on a sunny day and although we did not enjoy the food (nor the Bloody Mary, which was too watery), it was nice to seat outside and the waiter was friendly. The second time was with my in-laws. I ordered the healthy breakfast and a side of grits. It tested bland. My in-laws both ordered the Brussel Sprout Burger: it came out burned. The service was slow and the decor was cold. Overall I'd say that the experience is definitely not worth the price. read more

I've walked by this place multiple times and was so excited it finally opened walking distance from work! It's self seating, and we were lucky enough to find a spot during the lunch rush. Our server (I believe his name was Nicholas) was prompt, polite, and knew the menu extremely well. During our meal, our glasses were never empty. Every single employee we encountered was hospitable and made sure our lunch went well - even the manager. I'm rambling about the service here... Because, well, it's probably the best service I've received anywhere during a busy lunch hour. The food came out quickly, and although their prices are a little high, the portions are large and delicious. We all tried different burgers, and none of us left disappointed. I tried the crusted chicken sandwich (I can't remember the exact name), but the piece of chicken was perfectly cooked - juicy and tender. The fries were mediocre, but nothing to complain about. We also shared the pound cake topped with cranberries, which surprisingly, I didn't like very much. The District is such a neat little spot in downtown with great food and service. My husband and I were strolling in downtown and came upon this new eatery. We were welcomed by all staff. Very cute decor and spacious patio off Main. The brussels sprouts were amazing! Tostada Mahi with feta cheese and fresh salad filled me up. The Southern Fried Chicken Caesar Salad also was tasty. If you catch yourself in downtown, hit up this place. I was really excited to try this new place! Unfortunately it has been 50 minutes since we ordered and we have not yet received our food: there is five of us and most us ordered salas or pasta. As a working professional we have 1 hour lunch break and do not have time to leisurely wait around an hour for food. This is the first time and last time I will come here, unless they resolve their staffing needs and expedite the orders. The food was cold when it got to the table and the pasta noodles were overcooked. The salad was ok, not really impressed. We are all back at work and half of us have stomach ache from eating too fast. The manager did come by and apologized for the inconvenience it seems like they didn't have their stuff together in the kitchen. Hope this place gets better because it has great potential. read more

Very disappointed with The District Bar & Bistro! We visited The District before a play at the Alley Theater in hopes of finding a new spot near the Theater District; unfortunately we'll have to keep looking. Two of us had the HRW menu, and one ate off of the regular menu. My wife and I each had a "Beet Caprese" and it was good, but not enough balsamic and olive oil and the slices of beets were not freshly roasted, they came from a can or had been boiled. I had the "Berkshire Marbleized Pork Chop" and it was barely "OK", very thin, something I'd expect from Avalon Dinner or Denny's. It was served with simple sides fresh from a can. While on the menu as a "Center Cut Filet Mignon" it turned out to be two medallions of beef tenderloin with a sparse peppercorn sauce. The "smashed potato" was baked potato that had been "squashed" with no toppings, the sautéed mushrooms were under cooked but did have a nice sauce. My granddaughter ordered the 'Gator Mac-N-Cheese", it was very dry and the gator was tougher than usual, she had about 1/3 of it and gave up. The tenderloin was the only thing server that could be considered "good." They really need to teach their wait staff about wine, they know nothing! First, their wine list is very limited with typical markups. We ordered two glasses of Masi Campofiorin Rosso del Veronese at $10 ag glass, they had to open a new bottle which must have been stored somewhere close to the hot kitchen, as the wine was around 80+ degrees and need chilling. When we ask them to chill the wine before pouring, the waiter left with the bottle. We were expecting him to put it on ice for 10-12 minutes and bring to the proper serving temperature. He came back in about 3 minutes with the wine, AFTER he had shaken it with some ice which chilled it but also "watered" it down. Disgusting!! Needless to say, we'll never go back to The District Bar & Bistro or any of the other "District Family" of restaurants based on this fiasco. read more

We came here for brunch with a group from church. The weather was beautiful so we opted for a table outside. This is a great brunch spot. The migas were spot on and the mimosas tasty. Knocking off a star for the overly chatty manager who proceeded to pretty much tell us his whole life story. Had the food not arrived he'd probably still be telling us about his work with exchange students. The purpose of our brunch was to meet new people in the parish and it's hard to talk to them when this guy kept yammering. I'm sure he meant well but it was annoying. Great lunch spot that's tucked away in the heart of Downtown Houston. When we entered, we were promptly greeted at the door, we were told that it was open seating. I ordered the Panko Chicken Salad. Food came out quick considering there was a pretty big lunch rush. The chicken was cooked perfectly with the Panko crumbs breaded on it. The greens were drizzled with just the right amount of dressing. Throughout the meal, we were thoroughly checked on. I would definitely come back for lunch. This was my second time visiting this establishment in three years. The first time I went the service was extremely slow. The only reason why I came back to this establishment was because I was with a few co workers for a birthday. My table waited close to an hour and forty five minutes before we received our meals. We arrived at 12:10, received our drinks at 12:25, and did not receive our appetizers until 12:50. The service was so slow at this point my co worker had to leave at 1:10. We did not receive our meals until 1:20. My party and I noticed that other tables were looking around for their meals. One party that we walked in with left a few minutes into our meal commenting "y'all are slow eaters. Just kidding it took forever to get our meals too!" I would note that our server was extremely nice! HoweverI would not recommend this restaurant. read more

Had a party of 6 on a Tuesday night. Mainly the place was empty less about 10 other tables. Food: everyone enjoyed their food and we got a variety of fish, pork, and beef dishes. One person in the party was gluten free and the waiter had no clue what dishes were gluten free. He offered to go check the kitchen, but when we ordered he had forgot to ask and had to go back. After returning from his kitchen quest he promptly forgot everything they told him and still had no clue. It's a good thing it wasn't a life or death situation. Service: Our waiter was also the bar tender somehow. He took our drink orders promptly but we probably waited 10 min for the drinks. It took 30+ min for our appetizer to come out. When asked about it the waiter said it hadn't been 30 min and went to check the ticket. He returned corrected and apologized for the wait, and asked if we wanted the mains held so as not to crowd us. We told him no, and amazingly we still had to wait on the mains. I would hate to be there on a busy night. You may never get your food. read more

Ordered the Houston Restaurant Week menu (Deviled Eggs, Salmon entree and creme brûlée). Probably the best item out of these was the deviled eggs which should tell you something. The creme brûlée was mediocre at best which I feel is really hard to do with creme brûlée. The salmon was pretty dry and overall relatively tasteless. The service is really what did it for me in terms of being sub-par. Our server was beyond slow and didn't pay any attention to us (he had 2 tables this night). I found there to be no need to wait almost 20 minutes for dessert that was sub-par, or for the check that took about 10 minutes and then another 10 for payment. read more

Well this was quite the mixed bag experience. Let's talk about the good part first - The House pizza ($14) & the kale & spinach dip ($9) were delicious. However, the rest of our Sunday evening experience was quite odd and accounts for the 3 star review. We sat at the bar and there was 20 total patrons and 6 staff working total (open kitchen). One of the 6 randomly showed up with super long nails and he looked like he was in his jammies. The bartender/server/bus boy was trying hard but was overwhelmed and a bit of a space cadet (and also kept mysteriously disappearing). It took a while to get our wine and one of us got hers 15 min before the other. And the late wine was a mix of the last bottle that was open and a brand new one - interesting blend. Came here on a Sunday for lunch. My wife has been here before with friends and enjoyed it. The waitress seemed very unsure of what she was doing. I don't mind that, everyone is new at some point, but her communication was poor and that frustrated me. We had the crawfish hush puppies for an app, and they were good. The honey sauce that came with them had a nice kick. I also ordered an oyster shot, which, according to the menu, is cocktail sauce, horseradish, oyster and vodka, for $3. The bartender comes to the table to tell us that he makes them a particular way, and they are actually $7, not $3. I ordered one anyway. Imagine this - it comes out and it's just like the menu listed it, only $4 more than printed. It would have been better if they just came and said their menu had the wrong price listed. I could deal with that but I don't like BS. I also had the Pork Osso Buco with truffle risotto. It was very good but needed a little more seasoning on the pork shank and more truffle flavor in the risotto. Not sure if i'll go back or not. First meal here in Houston, and it made a strong first impression! The atmosphere is clean, modern, and casual. I sat at the bar and was immediately greeted by several smiling staff members. Rick was incredibly attentive and helpful with menu options. I got grilled and raw oysters, and I had a real moment with each and every one. I'd rank the grilled options like this: garlic butter- YAAAASS! Bacon jam- Yessir. Buffalo- Okay, sure. Don't get me wrong- it was a great buffalo sauce, but it overtook the flavor of the oysters in my opinion. I was afraid that the short rib pappardelle would be too heavy on a hot day, but the sauce was actually light and fresh. I ended up eating way more of it than I anticipated, because it was too good to leave on the plate. For dessert, I was pleased to find out that the bread pudding had no raisins (I wish death upon all raisins; they are sent from the devil to ruin delicious dishes) and it was the perfect texture- moist but not mushy. Super cool atmosphere and a great sit down restaurant downtown. Love the variety of food offered here, especially for brunch. The floor to ceiling windows allow the sunlight reflecting off of the buildings to come in. Chic atmosphere and great service! The District is right in the heart of Main Street in downtown Houston and it is so cute. The service is top notch, everyone is so nice and the manager Marc Anthony is the best! If you're getting appetizers, the mac & cheese is amazing. Has a little kick to it and is enough for three people to share. The deviled eggs come with two options, one has smoked salmon and capers and the other has bacon. Both are amazing! Marc Anthony is a sommelier and is totally approachable also don't feel overwhelmed ask him about any of the wine. For dinner, I had of the wild boar linguine with pesto. Some places will skimp on the pesto, but not The District. And the wild boar was cooked to perfection, it tasted like bacony sausagy meat. I know those aren't real words but that's how good the boar was. Overall, and amazing place to have dinner and I will visit every time in Houston. Visited while in town for a conference with a group of 6 who all ordered dinner. I enjoy a dozen mixed oysters and the kale salad. The oysters were delicious; the server recommended a local hot sauce which did not disappoint. The kale salad was a refreshing plate of vegetables after a day of airport food, however left a little to be desired. The chunks of kale were larger than bite sized and I prefer my kale salads to have the dressing "massaged in"...sounds weird but if you eat kale salads you'll know what I mean. I would have preferred the walnuts to be at least toasted if not candied (they were raw), and the eggplant on top was strange...maybe grilled and then chilled? It had no flavor, not even from the grill. I'd definitely go back to try a few other things. Our group enjoyed their filets, the ahi sandwich, and red fish pasta. Ah. Why? Why does it have a perfect downtown location with wonderful interior design, yet falls so flat in the food department? It is as if they ran out of steam when they arrived at preparing the menu and hiring the chef. Instead of a wine list of with interesting and affordable selections, we tried both cabs and a Malbec and all were subpar. We ordered two different types of burgers, the house burger, and the short rib burger. The house burger came out overcooked, dry, and with a bun that came fresh out of the day old section at the local grocer. I ate half before throwing up my arms in despair! For a burger of $15, it needs to be wonderful. I sent it back, something I would never do. But it needed to be done! How could I just eat such a burger without giving a second chance? When they brought back a second take on the burger, it was light years ahead of the first one, with a toasted bun, juicier meat, and more balanced flavors. But still, does it take asking the manager to give more care to their product in order to find something decent? I'd hope not. Maybe they'll fix their misgivings and turn what has a potential to be a fantastic addition to the Downtown Houston into something in line with the high bar the rest of Houston restaurants have set. read more

Horrible service and OK food. I work in the service industry and never write any reviews or go to the extent of calling the restaurant to speak to management about the terrible experience but in this case I just had to. Not only was the server inattentive to our table but he added gratuity to our tab and we only had 4 people when you only do that in the case of 6-8 or more. I don't know if it was because we were asian or what but not acceptable in anyway. He didn't even have the decency to tell us that gratuity was added. On top of that - he came off rude and the way he worded things was not welcoming. Definitely felt like he did not want to be there or want to wait on us. Called management and he apologized about the situation and I hope it will be addressed but it sounded like it wasn't an issue. Usually adding gratuity to tables has to go through management approval first but I guess management wasn't around from the get-go. Will not be returning and advise everyone to double check their tab before tipping to make sure gratuity was not included (even if you're a party of 2.) Either it's racism or stereotyping but once again - not acceptable. read more

Music playing is Eagles, Zeppelin, Marshal Tucker. Reflection of the sunset off buildings across the street is obnoxious. Waitress appears with water and menus, takes drink order. Apparently beer n wine on the menu, booze comes from the bar next door and takes about 10 mins. Shoulda ordered another round right then. We order hush puppies (too oily) and the mixed grilled oysters. Bacon Jam, Lemon Butter and Wing Sauce. None were outstanding. I ordered the pork Osso Bucco, wife the parmesan crusted chicken, friend red fish tostada, his wife the shrimp n grits. Osso Bucco was awesome. Pretty sure this is a beef/steak place, not sure why the others ordered fish n chicken. Waitress wants our dirty bar glass as they don't have enough so we order another slow round. Place is only 1/3 full at 6:30, can't imagine why they don't have lots of glasses. It is about half full at 7pm when it's time to go. $190 before tip. read more

This is the second time I have been there there that the draft beer was not good. We had 3 different draft beers We ordered and each had a musty, sour taste which is indicative of the beer taps And beer supply lines not being maintained. Love the location but they need to perform maintenance on their taps as bacteria can grow in the lines. Draft beer was also Luke warm. read more

We just started coming here less than 3 weeks ago. The bartender Rick was fantastic and made sure everything was perfect for our first visit! They have 3 types of grilled oysters and also raw oysters. We have now been 3-4 times and absolutely love it! Always clean, fresh and delicious! But it doesn't stop there. My favorite place for shrimp & grits, and their kale spinach dip is so amazing! 4 of us tried out the District last night before hitting up the quixote nuevo play (excellent by the way - The play not the District) We arrived at around 6pm and the place was rather empty. We had reservations but when we arrived the "host" (no one really assigned to greet people) and a few others huddled up, discussed which empty table to seat us at, and after an unusually long discussion escorted us to the table next to a couple and their kid eating dinner. Okay not the table I would have chosen but let's roll with it. Our server arrived muttered something that we guess was his name and a greeting then handed us menus. We asked if they had any drink special and he told us to look at the drink menu. Naturally, we asked if we could have some drink menus. He went off and returned with one (the four of us shared). After looking at the drink menu for 10 mins (the time it took for him to return) we asked if we could have one with pages in it (the one he gave us was empty...) He returned with a proper menu and we looked it over. We ordered - Whiskey Sour, Lemonade Whiskey, Glass of red wine, and a Moscow Mule. The wine and mule came out after about 15 min and when we asked about the whiskey drinks he said the bar was a bit busy. The building houses two spots the restaurant and the wine bar. Our side was empty but maybe the other side was busy. We waited another 20 min and then I canceled the sour. 30 seconds later he returned with the lemonade. Okay I canceled the drink but if the drinks were ready the server could have let me know and I would have accepted it. The others said their drinks were good. We then ordered appetizers and mains. For appetizers, we ordered hushpuppies and the calamari. For mains we ordered - Kobe burger, crabcake burger, Berkshire porkchop, and the shrimp carbonara. After about 20 min 2 plates were headed to our table. Great the appetizers are here! Wrong... The two burgers were delivered. We asked about the appetizers and our server had no idea that they were not delivered. It looks like one group takes orders and another delivers them without any communication between the two. We canceled the appetizers since our mains were here. This was 3 items we canceled during our meal because of their inability to run their business properly. Now that our mains were here I should point out that a pet peeve of mine is when restaurants do not bring all the food out together. (besides missing our appetizers which is not acceptable) We told those who ordered the burgers to start without us as there is no idea when the rest of the food might arrive. They started and about 5 min later the other two dishes showed up. PorkChop - Double bone chop cooked well and the sauce on top was excellent. The greens and mash had good taste as well. Kobe Burger - Zero flavor. None. The cheese looked like it had melted and run off the burger in the salamander (or however they melted it) Salt and pepper goes along way for burgers but was not used. There were also no toppings or condiments other than ketchup to help liven-up the tasteless meat brick delivered Crabcake Burger - burned. Looked pan fried but the outside was burned and had a nasty taste to it. Once you picked that portion of the inside was flavored nicely. The crab used was not high-quality lump meat and the sauce was odd? Not good or bad just odd. The star of the dish was the fries. Hand-cut skin-on fries that were delicious. Shrimp Carbonara - Average at best. The shrimp were a little overcooked but seasoned well. The pasta was cooked very well but the carbonara sauce was very creamy like it was made using a roux and not with egg yolks. The highlight on the menu fort his dish was an egg yolk on top. It was forgotten and at this point, we were done. We ate our meal paid our bill and got out of there. Houston has too many outstanding places to eat that anyone looking at the district should give it a pass. Our server looked inexperienced. What he lacked in expertise he could have made up in effort. He really wasn't attentive and made no effort to make our dining experience the best it could be. He wanted us out as badly as we wanted out. We would have liked to talk to a manager but if they can't keep track of drinks and appetizers I doubt that they could keep track of one another. We went on a Sunday evening around 6pm. Our server, Michelle, was helpful and attentive. We ordered a dozen local raw oysters; crab cake; tuna tartare and crawfish hush puppies. Had a glass of the house cabernet, Freakshow - very good. Finished with a shared creamer brûlée. There were very few diners - maybe because Yelp said they were closed? They were open! We ate outdoors and people watched the Metro rail, skate boarders, etc. It felt like we were in Paris, not Houston! read more

The place was pretty empty when my husband and I arrived, though we were on the early side since we wanted to make sure we got to our show on time. And unfortunately our server seemed less than interested in serving us :\ Poor effort, I would say. As for the food, I think the best part was our appetizers which were the jumbo lump crab cake and the mussels...they were both actually quite tasty! However, my next course, the salmon, was a bit forgettable. Not bad, just nothing special...and my husband felt the same way about his filet. I walked into this new downtown restaurant and thought it was closed. Nobody was here except for the bartender and chief. Not the best of signs for a new place during happy hour when tons of people are passing this spot up. Anyway, an airy and open room with a bar and long outdoor patio facing Main St. A nice and relaxed atmosphere. Since I was the only here, the waitstaff seemed a little overbearing. They are all courteous and everything came out quickly. Everyone here is obviously egger to help. Not the worst thing :) There a a few house cocktails, wine, and bottled/canned beer list. Nothing on tap. Food prices seemed very reasonable for most things. Most entrees are $15 or less, with a few specialties a little more. A pretty wide selection of burgers/sandwiches, to pastas and steaks. I went with the Wild Boar Linguine Pesto. A ton of pasta, but I felt could have used more wild boar sausage. The pasta was pretty average and bland. The sausage was nice and spicy, with the tart and tangy cherry tomatoes being on point. The dish was pretty greasy however, I am not sure if that is because of the wild boar or not? Not bad, but nothing particularly exceptional. Friendly and welcoming vibe, with maybe overly attentive service. Which I would expect being the only one here. As is, an OK spot for downtown, but outside of a few spots downtown/Main St is still really laking in truly great restaurants (not so for cocktail bars now though). Saying that, I will be back to try the burgers. The Bison burger is of interest to me specifically. read more
