I've been here twice and really enjoyed it both times. I'm surprised they're not busier. The decor is modern and beautiful, with floor to ceiling windows and a big patio with comfy chairs. Last night I ordered brussel sprouts and asparagus and my fiancé ordered octopus and calamari. We also had the kale and spinach dip appetizer (this was innncredible). The buffalo burger was amazing; soft and juicy, fresh and tasty, and the bun.... god the bun.... was so good. Fries were cut nice and thick! The shrimp and grits were bomb. Some of the best I've ever had, and I've had a few. Definitely worth a nibble. The staff were all exceptionally friendly and helpful when navigating the menu. Made us feel very welcome. The decor is nothing to turn your nose up at. From the large quartz slab at the bar to the wood panel accent wall to the industrial lighting fixtures, this place has character. I would highly recommend this place for anyone in the downtown area! Right off of Main, with $5 parking right behind the restaurant, it is easily accessible. First off, I live two blocks from here, so this is typically a quick, what's for dinner, get something easy and quick spot. I want to give this place a higher rating, but there's always a hiccup. The service, most of the time is lackluster. For example, last Saturday around 9pm, there were probably 7 tables outside 4 tables inside and a beer and mixed drink were ordered. It took 17 minutes to get the drinks delivered- uncalled for. There are so many redeeming things about this place, TK is a new server and man, did he make the entire night! He was so friendly, apologized about the drink issue, and extremely attentive. The macaroni and I think it is pulled pork dish is out of this world. The oysters are so good and such a good price. Although, you cannot get a half dozen oysters, which is annoying. The crawfish hush puppies and kale artichoke dip are delightful! I have eaten in the restaurant and also ordered to-go. Lunch time service is very, very slow. There was a mix-up on my to-go order and the hostess was not the most gracious in handling it. She allowed me to sit at the bar waiting for 15 minutes when my order was ready to go and sitting on the cold granite. I did get a fresh, hot dish. However, it was packed like a leftover dish and spilled in the bag on the way back to the office. Mac and Cheese is bland and overpriced. We went for a friends reception and there was a preset menu (which is typically easier for an establishment to handle with multiple people). For those that ordered steaks we found they were cooked the same regardless of how you ordered it - medium rare. If you sent it back the waiter would come out and tell you it was cooked exactly the way you ordered it so would you like to "change" how you want it cooked - that is a quote from the waiter! Then when he brings it back he ask if I want A1 sauce - that on top of the extra gravy they added - REALLY. Unless you are TRYING to be rude why would you do that!!! That was just part of the experience but probably "the straw that broke the camels back"! I gave an additional star because at least it is a nice space. Also the bar tender was very friendly and worked to keep you distracted while other things were being a challenge for the other staff. They may just not have been able to handle a largesh size group - the may do a lot better with small parties. My friends and I found this restaurant through Yelp because we wanted somewhere close to our job since we were going during our lunch break. My favorite part about this restaurant was definitely the look. It has a very sleek and modern design that is very inviting because there are so many windows around the whole restraint. It was very interesting that the kitchen is in the open for everyone to see because that isn't a common thing. For appetizer, we ordered the kale artichoke dip and if was amazing! For my entree, I ordered the Parmesan crusted chicken with pesto linguine and honestly, it had way too my pesto for my liking. Also, the crust on the chicken could have been a lot more crispy because it was very soft and didn't leave a satisfying taste. As for our waiter, she wasn't too knowledgable of the menu/restaurant because she had to go back and check on what the soup of the day was and wasn't too sure on how to make a dry Titos martini since they do have to make the drinks themselves. I specifically asked for panko but received the grilled. I didn't make a big deal since it our party had to be back at a particular time. I asked for individual checks but somehow the waiter didn't know how to work the system. We were charged $1.00 for an "open food" item without any further explanation. We had the strangest waiter - slow, inattentive, and we could barely understand him (mumbling). The whole individual check issue brought the manager to our table. I came here with a group of about 12 after the women's march. Our waitress was new, but she handled our large table very well. All of our food was delivered at the same time and everyone seemed to enjoy their meal except me. I got the breadfast (basically a breakfast sandwich made with naan). The naan was a bit dry and over toasted, but the breakfast hash was absolutely delicious and they gave large portions. This was an extremely disappointing evening. I will preface this review with we went on Valentine's Day, but I had a reservation and was hoping for a decent experience. We arrived on time, seats weren't ready and they seemed confused about my name and my reservation. They sent us next door to the wine bar and told us they would come get us. 15 minutes later we were seated. We had plenty of time to look at the menus while we waited so we ordered quickly because we knew what we wanted. From there it was just a mess: had to ask for waters; our filet mignons came very (too) quickly, and looked like balls of meat smothered in gravy; had to ask for steak knives (twice); he forgot my salad; the brussel sprouts appetizer came after the steaks; we weren't asked if we wanted dessert. One of those places I wish you could give half stars to. Honestly, three stars is too low, four stars is too high. The location is great, and the seating is ample. Food is good overall, though not spectacular. I have only eaten lunch here, so I cannot speak to the dinner menu (which I believe is slightly different). Good mix of salads, sandwiches and burgers with a few other entrees. Prices are a bit high for what you get even downtown (and honestly, the dinner prices are part of the reason I have never had that particular meal here). Service is pleasant, if slow. Difficult to go for lunch unless I am sure I have at least 90 minutes free to be away from the office. Would be more popular I think if they got their lunch act together on timing. read more

The aesthetic from inside and outside was really nice. Was excited about drink items and dinner descriptions to be disappointed with poor execution. I got a mule and my girlfriend got a caipiroskas. Both on the stronger side of liquor. We also ordered the sesame soy glazed salmon. The glaze looked lazily drizzled and the risotto dryer than most risottos. There were 4 small pieces of green onion on the side of our salmon. And small bits of mushroom buried inside the risotto. Tried the pancetta shrimp carbonara. It was lacking flavor. Lastly, the bathrooms were surprisingly inconsistent with the rest of the interior design of the entire restaurant. Small glass marbles in the sink didn't feel right and the paper towel dispenser was empty while a stack sat in between the sinks. 3/5. But the brussel sprouts were pretty good. read more

I had the beet and arugula salad, a side of mashed potatoes and an Aviator to drink. The salad was tasty and the dressing was perfect. I did ask for additional dressing because the salad was dressed lightly. The potatoes were creamy and didn't require anything "extra". Service was awesome and the meal was the best I'd had all week. It was a Tuesday night when my husband and I found this place right in downtown Houston. It was dead inside, but we decided to try it, and I'm so glad we did. We had a few margaritas, one of which was ther specialty spicy margarita. It was too hot for my husband, but i really liked it. Gor dinner, Hubby had the Red Fish Over Linguini and I had the Paella, both of which were super tasty. All of the servers were super friendly. The only disappointment in the meal for me was the desert I ordered. It was a bread pudding , but it was very different from a typical bread pudding. I'll get straight to the point: food is average and the service was piss-poor. We ordered their raw oysters, charbroiled oysters, calamari, lobster fritters, and their carbonara. Oysters were good, everything else was very average. Unfortunately, the service was horrendous. We were the only people in the restaurant @ 5pm, so you would assume the service was be at least attentive, but that was NOT the case. Server was apathetic in greeting us at our table and did not seem like he wanted to be there. I was dining with 3 other guests that are actually waitstaff at another restaurant. One of my guests immediately made a comment in regards to our server's poor demeanor. I'll admit I was hesitant to even order food once he had spoken to us, but we wanted to try the oysters here. Throughout the meal, we did send the server back and forth a bit, so we did feel bad for that. However, if I'm a guest and I have to walk over to the kitchen to ask for something (multiple times), then you have failed your guests as a restaurant. Final straw: when the bill came out, we found out that the server had actually gratted us (added 18% gratuity) even though we were a party of 4. I find this insulting because that leads me to believe that the server did not think he would receive a tip from us; 3 of the people on the table were servers too! Frankly, I'm insulted by the assumption. Side note: I'm a 20% tipper regularly unless the job had not been done well. All in all, don't eat here unless you enjoy being treated like trash. And even if that were the case, you can be treated like trash but at least enjoy better food. This place sucks. read more

My dear friend and I went on a Wednesday night (8:30 or so) the place was empty! We were a little hesitant for that reason but we still gave The District a shot. The waiter was extremely friendly and helpful regarding the menu and our options. I decided to get a Panko Chicken Salad ($13) and may I say it was delicious! Although the salad was a little pricey I could tell exactly why it was a good portion salad and it had an amazing taste! My friend, Sophia, got some sort of pasta and she KILLED it! She said it was really great and enjoyed her dinner very much. The District is in the heart of Downtown, Houston and has a beautiful interior design. I had high hopes for The District as I love District 7 Grill in midtown. My fiancee and I decided to try this place after seeing the sign for oysters out front. Our waiter was prompt but not very knowledgeable about the menu nor very personable. When I asked which oysters on our platter were which he was unsure. Not a huge issue, we just had to blindly dig in and guess the gulf from the east coast oysters. The most underwhelming part was the main course. The flavors were just ok and both of our dishes came out cold. With other great options downtown, we will likely go elsewhere for dinner in the future. Yuck. Yucky service, mediocre food and the lace was empty. I work downtown and have walked by this place many times and will now just keep on walking. It was seat yourself and we did. We were promptly met by someone with menus and she took our drink order. Then we couldn't get her attention for 10 minutes as she cleaned a nearby table and avoided eye contact. We told her we were ready to order and she said she would send over our waitresses. What? Okay so 5 minutes later our waitress comes over. She has no personality and takes our order. Now we are in a hurry and I ask her to speed our order along because we are on a tighter schedule now. Another person arrives at our table with one of the two dishes and asks if we need plates. We explained that that dish is an entree and not an appetizer so we don't need plates. A while later my burger arrives, which I ordered medium well and it's rare and bleeding in my plate. To wrap this up the GM comes to the table and apologizes and comps my burger. I didn't want a free meal just a nice experience with my son over a good meal. Fail - on all levels. Such a disappointment. The location was good, decor looked inviting but it was the menu that really got my eye...oysters, seafood and reasonable prices. The meal started off with the bartender serving gin with lime on the rocks instead of a bruised martini with a twist, up. The oysters with lemon and garlic seemed to have sugar on them. the worst was my companion's burger. It came to the table cold. My redfish was good.
