Had some great experiences here, had some not so great experiences here. As all the locals know, it's very convenient to head to RL for all your home maintenance needs. They have everything you could possibly want and it sure beats driving down the hill. Yes, prices are 30% more expensive than Home Depot down the hill, but you're paying for convenience. I purchased about a thousand dollars worth of material recently for a home project. They deliver for free on the mountain, but the lumber wasn't as good of quality as I was hoping -- the plywood seemed OK (seemed to have some rot in the middle). Kinda surprised given the price. Another time, I went in the store at 450 pm and whatever you do, God help you if you come in at that time. Everyone wants to split at 4:59 .....they'll be pushing you out the door no matter how much crap you desire to buy. RFL works well for many things, but every now and then you'll have an experience that leaves a bit to be desired. Good place to visit in a pinch. read more

I went to Rim Forest for a few items. I was treated very well by every employee I talked to. Everyone smiled & was very helpful. Even when I asked the same question twice I went to the lumberyard to get a couple pieces of 2' rebar. The guy working there was great. I have seen a lot of negative posts about rude staff. They must have read them and did some great training. Sure things are more expensive than HD down the hill. But I feel my time is better spent working on my projects than going into San Bernadinio. read more

Good selection of lumber and hardware for being up in the mountains. Prices are higher compared to HD but its for convince. The inside is very narrow and hard to walk around. The day I visited the check out line had 10 people in line during their busiest time with one cashier, took 20 minutes to check out, bought one electrical tape.. ridiculous and the young kid worker was rude and not helpful when I asked where the electrical was... he needs to be fired. read more

Dishonest sales people they tell you product information that is not true and the manager does noting to rectify the problem. The sales person/service person who should know the product demonstrated a Stihl cordless weed-wacker to me and told me it would fully charge after use in 20 minutes. I bought it base on what he told me which is a lie. I went home and used it and after putting it on the charger for 70 minutes it was only half charger. I went back to see if they gave me the wrong charger as they do make other chargers that will charge faster. i showed him the charging times off of the Stihl website and all he could say was I made a mistake. I would not have bought it and they hide behind a posted sign that all sales are final. I went to the manager and got the same reply as it was their mistake not mine. I will contact the credit card company and deny the charge, file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, file a Stihl dealer complaint. I would rather go down the hill and buy products from a reputable honest company read more

Very poor service dept. I wanted to talk to someone in the paint dept and I see a line to talk to the only "1" paint person but yet there's several employees standing around . I asked them a question which is all I wanted answered and he refers me to the paint line. Either mgmt needs to cross train their employees like home depot does, so they could help out more. From now on, I'll drive the extra miles to home depot to get my questions answered. read more

I've been on the mountain for several years and have been happy with their service until today. I purchased about $8000 worth of block, but when I went to return the pallets, they refused to return the pallet deposit. I provided them the original receipt, but they refused to accept it. When in doubt go to this place will definitely save you a trip to the big box retailers. The only thing that I didn't like was ultimately the customer service. However for being in that region and area that it's and I definitely appreciated the fact that I didn't have to drive 50 to 60 minutes one way island to get to Lowe's or Home Depot they had pretty much the same things That the big box retailer had as well. The store is nicely organized and I appreciated when I did ask for help I instantly got it. The only caveat to that help was sometimes it would be just pointing at a general direction and or them saying make a right then a left and a right and then a left and then a right...... I dont enjoy having to go to RFL, Ever. Almost all of them treat you like you're a dumbass and you're wasting their precious time, when they could be sitting behind the counter crudely joking with one another. Asking for something that involves them to put in any effort is like asking a teenager to clean his bedroom. Actually it's Exactly like that. Just dont bother them and you'll be ok, they're "really busy" ya know... They should have a self checkout line, you'd get better customer service that way. And to top it all off, they're out of Everything these days and to top that all off they admitted to not knowing what they have in stock At All! I had to purchase items just to find out if they had them on hand, and then had to come back and notify them that in fact they didn't. I had to repeat the process a total 3 times before i was able to find a satisfactory substitute for what i was really looking for. Ace hardware is further away for me. They dont have nearly the lumber or materials RFL has. But I'm at the point to where Ace is the default and I always run down there first, hoping they have what im looking for. Always unhelpful to downright rude at the counter. If I call to ask a simple question, I get attitude on the phone as well. The employees there make it seem like the customer is nothing more than an annoyance that they have to put up with. I feel if I ask the wrong question, or the right one in a way they don't like, they're going to give me back my money and yell "No soup for you!". I have a major deck upgrade that I'll be buying wood for, and would rather go down the hill to Home Depot instead of giving them my money. read more

There was no way any hardware store had the part I needed for an inexpensive BBQ that I bought "used" two years ago...so RIM FOREST LUMBER CO. made what I needed (again)! I needed a solid 8" metal disk to close up a hole in the bottom of my BBQ where some fancy, low quality appliance was until a month ago when it all came apart. I was ready to buy a circular 8" metal saw blade for $13.00 and a metal washer to plug the center hole. At the front counter I explained my plan to "Jacob," who thought they could do better. "Jacob" checked with some of the older guys there and one of them had an idea. "Jacob" took me to the yard and we rummaged around in some roofing materials locating 8" metal (roofing) flashing. I bought 12" of it for around $1.00. Then "Adam," who works outside in their yard, cut my 12" from the roll and very skillfully used some tin snips to make an 8" circle. I got back to our cabin and it was a PERFECT fit in the bottom of the BBQ - which should now last five more years (at least)! This is my third FIVE STAR review in a row of this business in three years! These people work as a team, and they know their talking and working together yields better ideas than just one brain being involved. Rim Forest Lumber has a lot of supplies, but their prices are high, and their customer service is less than desirable. Their accounting department is terrible and unprofessional. We have an account with them, and they never seem to be able to email the statements and ding us as there is only a 10-day window. I've called several times and they swear they sent the emails and neither my business partner nor I received them. When contacting them, they will not honor the discount and say "tough we emailed them " without further investigation to check their systems. They seem to have antiquated business operations. We are a busy company and emailed statements should be a given for a business account. We will just go to Lake Drive hardware as their accounting department is much better. Rim Forest Lumber's accountant needs better accounting and customer service skills. If we ran our business the way Rim Lumber does, I couldn't feel good about myself as our customers are what make us. read more

I can deal with the high prices when in a pinch, I can't deal with their bankers hours. Only open til 5 and not on Sunday's caters primarily to contractors. The pricing is higher than big box stores but they carry everything and there aren't any big box stores on the mountain so that points moot. What impressed me most is the amount of staff on site. You won't have any difficulty finding staff to assist. I did have to ask for help initially, thus the 4 stars instead of 5. I just needed 3' of 1/2 PVC and was willing to buy a pre-cut piece but they insisted they only sell me what I needed. The only other option is driving to Crestline to Ace and I've always had to hunt down staff there as well. read more

Rim Forest lumber rocks for the Lake Arrowhead and Rimforest area. Most of the time they have exactly what I need. Most of the staff are really very knowledged about any hardware and woods. On occasion it can be quite hard to find somebody in a specific department to get some help but no matter what when you compare it to the giants such as Home Depot this place is superior! I definitely will be back as this place is the best hardware store on the hill :-) read more

Let's start with they do have a great staff I've gotten close to a lot of people that work at RFL . Inventory has really gone down hill and pricing is off the hook on most items I feel we are paying premium prices for less quality than a year ago but my biggest complaint is prices. Probably about 25-40% higher than anyone else in so cal . Price gouging at its finest in my opinion but you figure it out for yourself. Convince yes for sure ! Let me tell you, after building for the past 30 years and watching the PERSONAL SERVICE dissolve in lumber business I have hated needing to pick up materials for a project. We are all personally affected by the great Old School, Lumber yards being bought up by the Mega corporations or closing and being replaced by the Handi Man and Home Owner centers. Well a few months ago we started a project in Running Springs, and were introduced to Pat and the amazing crew a RIM FOREST LUMBER. What a gift. It was like going back 20 years when service meant SERVICE. They answer the phone, they have it, if they don't they get it. They call you back.... this is the place to go. I had been talking with a sales person for a couple weeks looking for a specific product. A couple weeks ago he told me to check back in a couple weeks. When I called yesterday he assured me the product was in. First thing in the morning I made the hour drive down from Big Bear. It was my salesman's day off. When it was my turn I told the lady what I was there for. She told me the SHE is the one that places all the orders abs they don't have that product. I said there must be a mistake because I talked to the salesman at least three times yesterda.... What don't you understand? We don't have it! Instead of apologizing for the mistake she was more interested in letting me know SHE is the one the orders and WE DON'T HAVE IT. What a F'n Bioach she was. She guaranteed I will never spend my hard earned money at a place that treats their customers like this. I was ready to drop over $3k cash in that store. Buyers beware. They think they are the only game in town. And while that might be true on the mountain. So Cal is a big place with lots of other lumber yards. For a small Mountain lumber store this place has everything. I'm a new homeowner and have needed a lot of patience and help which they've been kind enough to give me. Everyone that works here is friendly and I was able to get my projects done at a reasonable price which I was surprised about again given that this is a mountain store. I can't agree more then with Michele G. I have been going into Rim Forest Lumber for years and, although the service hasn't always been great, I never before received the poor service and attitude I received this past Saturday when I went in with a shut-off valve in hand that I needed to replace. The girl, Summer, who showed me where the replacement valves were was not only extremely unhelpful she was unfriendly, was not listening to what I was telling her and gave me a lot of attitude. She did not have the valve I had brought in to replace but instead showed me another one which she thought might work but kept telling me there were "no guarantees" and that I could not return it if I were to damage it. When I returned home with the new valve, I could see that if she knew what she was doing she could have guaranteed it NOT to work. I brought a galvanized valve with a 1/2" male end and she sold me a copper valve with a 3/4" male end (which was hidden). When I brought it in an hour late for a refund, she would not take it back because I opened it up to see that it was 3/4" thread and not 1/2" that I needed. I took great care in removing the nut and the valve was not damaged whatsoever. The manager, Stephanie, and another girl working behind the counter both chimed in saying, "We heard her tell you there were no guarantees". OK, no guarantee but how does that translate to no refund? Again, there was no damage to the valve and the only way she knew that I took a wrench to the nut is because I told her. They have lost a valued customer and I have already told my friends and family not to patronize this store anymore. All this over a $10. valve. Guess they never heard of customer satisfaction. Such a shame because now I will have to go to Cedar Glen for my hardware needs. read more
