My favorite sushi restaurant in the Ann Arbor area. I'm a sushi lover and we go there almost weekly. It's a cozy and casual family-run restaurant. Food is always fresh and tasteful. My kids love to eat there too. Our favorites are salmon teriyaki bento box, w.k.o. roll, green dragon roll, stir fried udon, white fish tempera. Their salmon teriyaki is the most tender among all the sushi restaurants I know in Ann Arbor. It's always our first pick when we consider eating out. read more

The Place usually makes some awesome sushi. The skinny guy that makes the sushi makes some beautiful looking and great tasting sushi. I would give the place a lot better review if it wasn't for my horrible experience with the waitress there. The waitress that is younger and very skinny with long black hair is quite rude and disrespectful. I come there a lot on my lunch and she seems like she's always in a bad mood. My last visit will definitely be my last. Before I go into the experience, I'd like to say that I rarely send food back. Now I ordered the 2 roll special. One tuna roll and one Philly roll. The Philly roll was great but I didn't care much for the tuna one. I'm not sure if the fish was that fresh or something. I decided to politely ask if I it would be ok for me to switch my roll to something else. The waitress then says to me with an irritated look and attitude in her voice "WHY?". I was taken off guard a little by that response and said back with some attitude myself "because I don't like it".... After her standing there in silence for a few moments I just said "just forget it". I did make sure on the tip section of the receipt to write "WHY" though. So that felt good. read more

My family has had sushi, both take out and eat in, more than twenty times or more. All rolls have been consistently good quality. I love the California rolls and salad. My daughter loves the tuna rolls and salmon rolls. My parents enjoy their Teryiki Chicken dinner, although I always wish for more vegetables to be included. My spouse loves the eel rolls. This is a casual restaurant for eating in, not fancy at all. Wait staff is perfectly adequate. I do feel they are pricey, but the lunch specials are a good deal. read more

The sushi was high quality and inexpensive. They have interesting options, including soy paper rolls, mango, that aren't always offered at Ann Arbor restaurants. The place is BYOB. Atmosphere is very casual/cheap looking and leaves a lot to be desired as far as sushi restaurants go, but this has no bearing on the quality of the food. I was happy with the visit. Two stars is giving the benefit of the doubt. I understand most sushi in the midwest is mediocre, but a place can make up for it with attentive & friendly service. This is NOT what i found at DKY. The opposite of helpful, I felt like i was interrupting the server, but they weren't that busy. The tea i ordered never came so I had to ask someone else. I also had to get dishes for our soy sauce. We only went here because it's the closest sushi place on this part of town. I got the sushi deluxe, which was only 10 pieces with a tuna roll. Besides being overpriced, it had no taste. I did like their thai tea. read more

I love this place! I love the salmon rolls, so much that I sometimes go there for lunch and dinner (until my husband notices, lol). Perfect lunch: 2 salmon rolls, one asparagus or sweet potato roll with the oh so comforting miso soup and lots of free green tea. The plain salad with ginger dressing is also wonderful. They also have beef, noodle dishes, and other yummy things for the non-sushi eaters. The young couple that owns the place are friendly people you'll just want to see succeed. read more

I picked up a carry out of 2 special rolls using their buy one, get one coupon. I specifically chose rolls from their menu that did not have a caviar topping. I picked up my order at 7:30 on a Saturday night, and there were no customers in the restaurant. I thought that was a bad sign-this was my first time getting dinner from dky, although I used to eat lunch here about once a month. First of all, one of my rolls not only had fish eggs as a garnish, but it had 2 kinds-black and orange-and alot of it. That was easily scraped off, but the pile of mayonaise on every slice of both of the rolls was not so easily removed. What a terrible carry out-why do they think we want rolls coated in Mayonaisse? Even the fish was a bit suspect, all chopped up instead of a nice piece throughout the roll. Maybe they put all the mayo and eggs on top to hide the diminishing quality of the food? I've always considered this place a hit or miss, but after this miss I just can't return. It wasen't even worth the price at half off-I tried to feed my dog a piece and he even made a weird face. read more

Two stars, only because my sister's husband really liked his Ninja Sushi roll. This place is relatively new, so I should cut them a little slack, but they rubbed me the wrong way on three notes: 1.) They were out of the vegetable dumplings my sister had wanted. All items should be available, but sometimes this cannot be helped. I suppose. 2.) The waitress forgot two of the items we had ordered (not just one!) My sister had ended up ordering the pork dumplings - we never got them... and something else had been forgotten... mind lapse. 3.) The menu is not accurate. I do not like roe on my maki rolls -- and I really don't like creamy sauces, or sauces of any sort topping them. Other items on the menu were explicit as to wether or not there were these disliked items, so I didn't think it necessary to specify I didn't want them. Although, what did I expect -- I DID order the volcano roll... haha Regardless, the chef was generous with the roe, much to my dismay -- and much to someone else's delight. It was actually decent, but my own personal problem of thinking about the roe while eating it. HA... Anyhow, the prices were very decent. The seaweed salad and edamame were perfection. The green tea was a bit weak, but good. read more

DKY sushi is not a grab and go place. The food took over 2 hours to come, and once it did it was mediocre. Not to mention the mild food poisoning we got after eating there. DKY Sushi, kind of across from Meijer's on Zeeb Road, near Westside Consignment. It is sort of hidden away, but if you look you can find. First visit for me, two of our party of four had been there before. The waitperson was very nice and answering questions that were asked. It was funny, three of our group chose one form or another the California roll. Miso soup DKY it Is way better than most that you run into. Real pros run the place. I was amazed they were not busier. I really want to like this place but it's just not that good. Rolls are comparable to grocery store quality which is ok but not what I want if I go to a actual sushi restaurant... Anyone that just puts huge chunks of krab in rolls without slicing it is a huge turnoff for me.. A quiet, tucked away place in an mixed use building that you're sure to pass if you're not sure where you're going. Dining area is small but very casual and colorful. Ideally, its for the lunch work crowd, with specials on various rolls. Having only been here twice, I like the variety of options and the friendly atmosphere. Its priced for the area, but not overpriced based on some of the other dining options in the area. I have no problems suggesting this place if you're in the area wanting some sushi. read more

Sushi here is good. I've had sushi at some of the best places in MI and NYC and this falls in-line with the middle of the road. My brother works at one of more respected sushi places in SE MI and he's made tons of rolls for the family. I come here once a week for lunch and haven't been disappointed yet. read more

I agree with everyone else. The food here is solid, but nothing notable. I will continue to return because I work only a few minutes away, but I wouldn't drive out of my way for this sushi. It takes a lot to be a "bad" restaurant in my book, and I've never seen or experienced anything at DKY that would make me describe it that way. With that said though, there's really nothing to write home about this place honestly. The food (both sushi and otherwise) is bland but passable, the waitstaff is adequate and the prices are slightly lower than the area average. As another reviewer stated, lunch specials are a welcome sight on the menu (especially considering the place is less than five minutes from my office) but still, I barely ever stop in. I think the most telling comment I can make is that I only go to DKY when I want something healthier than fast food for lunch, while not wanting to pay more than $10-15 for the meal. That's what DKY is good for, a relatively cheap and un-fried lunch. Otherwise, you can do better at pretty much every Japanese place in the area. EDIT 5/22/2015: I wanted to do a quick edit to my earlier review; I don't know what to attribute this change to, but it seems like they have really stepped up their game here at DKY over the last few months. It's still not the pinnacle of sushi places in the area, but I would now feel confident enough to recommend it to other people instead of just stopping in occasionally for my own lunch. I work right down the street and go here for my sushi fix. I know about sushi, since I've worked in a sushi restaurant in Santa Monica before moving here. The best place to get tasty sushi and warm cup a miso soup. You walk in, get hit in the head with a puny set of wind-chimes. It's great! My favorites are California, Alaska, Boston,- I guess I just like getting the same thing, b/c I know what to expect. My friends love their Spicy Tuna roll. The green stuff, that's supposed to be spicy is sometimes not spicy. Not sure why. This is a small place, but very courteous and quality-oriented. I like their selection. I'm never going to buy Meijer brand or any other kind of sushi again, it just doesn't compare to what it's supposed to taste like. read more

I love this place. Best tempura I've ever had. I wouldn't say the service was spectacular, but they are new and I'm sure trying to work out a few kinks. I've never had any major problems. The owner, a younger guy, has been there each time I've been in. It's obvious that he takes his business seriously. He's doing a great job. We had a really good experience here. We ordered a veggie fried rice for Little Kid, and a variety of sushi for Hubs and me to share. They get a solid three stars because they didn't densely pack the rice for the nigiri, and the fish they topped each piece with was generously sized and fresh. Their fried rice portion was a bit on the small side for the price, but the flavor was good and it wasn't greasy. We got their DKY Roll, which had tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, and avocado wrapped in soy paper. There was not a lot of rice in there, which made for a lighter roll, and the tempura shrimp was nice and crisp. Service was not overly attentive, but we weren't ignored, either. I'm happy to have taken a chance and we're looking forward to more meals here. read more

Got a bento box to go, everyome seemed nice and attentive. Sushi was decent and same with dumplings (on the small size, but it was a lunch bento) but the teriyaki chicken was so so. Sauce has no taste, seemed very watered down and added after chicken was done so it was not caramelized at all. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME HERE! My boyfriend and I were trying to find a new sushi place closer to home so we stopped here one Thursday evening. There is only two people in front of us one was a carry out order. We waited for 20 minutes no one ever greeted us or came to get our drinks so we walked out. A few weeks later I went back with someone else, The food and service were both horrid. You can get better sushi across the street meijer than here. I asked for a side of Masago they literally gave me a drop in a tiny dish then charge me four dollars for it I said why did you charge me so much and the lady acted like she couldn't speak any English to help. Friendly neighborhood place, decent food, ok prices. The seafood udon soup is huge and quite good; sushi is good. Service has always been good; I did once remind them of a forgotten item and got a prompt courteous apology and quick service. Absolutely wonderful sushi. I couldn't be more pleased by their offerings. Usually I get the salmon roll and a shrimp tempora roll, and both are very fresh and delicious. They also have a very flavorful crab ragoon recipe. Prices are pretty decent, and the service is very prompt. The full entrees aren't quite up to the same quality, and they don't offer brown rice alternatives, which is the only reason this isn't a five star review. read more

Sunday evening couldn't decide what to eat and I remember a friend had told me about this place. ordered $40 worth of Sushi. Ordered take out and when we got to the place it seemed nice and clean and what not. Get home and this Sushi is just MEH. All I could think was this is the equivalent of buying sushi at Meijer. I work out of Jackson, MI and there is a place I go to called AKA Sushi. Not only is their Sushi more reasonably priced it is way tastier. Ann Arbor is 15 minutes from my place and when I'm not working Jackson is a good 25-30 minutes away. I would go out of my way nextime on a Sunday all the way to Jackson because I know I'm guaranteed great Sushi. Sorry DKY... Step your game up. read more

I've been to several Japanese restaurants in Ann Arbor and today was my first time tried and came out with satisfaction. Atmosphere here is simple and casual. Sushi chef seems well experienced and food came out pretty fast which is really nice for lunch time customers who has short amount of time for lunch break to go out and eat. staffs here are friendly and willing to communicate with customers. Ate there yesterday and felt it a big mistake. Prices were high for the quality of food. Salmon was old and fishy. Roe was old and fishy. Crab salad was old and made the two people in my party who ate it very sick. The place smelled of old frying fat. The pictures of the bento box were nothing like the very meager plate that arrived. The service was rushed. The sauces were canned and uninspiring. All in all, I felt I completely wasted $50. I will never go there again. read more

The place is nice, the food is nice, but it's nothing to write home about. The reason I gave it 3/5 is because the 'spicy' sushi rolls are just the fish mixed with tempura crunch. So you're paying a dollar more for crunch. Kind of misleading. They don't have any spicy mayo (masago) at all, and I even asked! Having lost our favorite small sushi restaurant in Kerrytown this year, we have been looking for a place to eat sushi. We stumbled on DKY a few weeks ago and decided to give it a try. We really enjoyed this place. The staff were attentive, and accurate with our orders and the sashimi was lovely. I had the $20 sashimi and it was a generous portion of a myriad of fish. The salmon roe was excellent, tasting fresh, not frozen. The atmosphere was quiet and intimate and the music was not overly loud. A small family owned business, DKY Sushi is a nice place to sit and talk over dinner. Unlike the atmosphere of Miki where there seems to be much pretense, and Godiako where the interruptions are often numerous, our waitress came over when our glasses needed refilling, or when the next portion of our meal was ready and the crowd was not there to see and be seen. The waitress had just the right balance of checking in with us without interrupting our private conversation. We left feeling we have found our new restaurant. A delight for a mommy of three who sometimes needs a quiet, not pretentious, evening out. read more
