I feel like Totoro used to be among the most solid sushi places in town (10+ years ago). It's still good, and a great location, but didn't live up to how I remembered it. It's probably the only place in town you can get omurice. Agedashi tofu was great -- tender tofu, crispy outside. I've never had a salmon skin roll quite like this. The pieces were like...thick? It was kind of tricky to eat but good. We were excited to see omurice as an option; it was good and likely authentic but we thought the sauce was a bit sweet. I'm a fan of their bentos for lunch! I enjoyed the Friday special sushi & sashimi bento. It wasn't necessarily the best cuts or pieces of fish, but for $20 it's good value. Perfectly adequate Japanese food at a reasonable price. They have quite a few lunch specials available around the $14-18 range. I opted for the bento box with pork katsu ($15) the other day, which came with half a California roll, some tempura, and a little noodle salad. It was a good amount of food for the money, but I will note the dinner box ($20) comes with more so you're not really getting a deal with the lunch box. I also really wish that the noodle side would have been replaced with a salad, and imo the katsu should have come with rice. A miso soup would have also been appreciated. They packaged up soy sauce, tempura dipping sauce, and some odd mayo based sauce that didn't really go with anything. I was bummed there was no katsu sauce, although the pork was tasty nonetheless. The woman working was nice enough in my brief encounter with her. They do not take Amex as an FYI. My order was ready at the pickup time that I selected and packaged well. Delicious food and excellent service! Hole in the wall feel but also very clean. My fiancé and I ordered a few sushi rolls (comes with miso soup) and tempura udon and everything was yummy. I don't like cucumber, which is typically difficult to avoid in sushi, but there were so many options to choose from. My favorite was the Hell Yeah roll - so yummy. The service here is great and the waitresses are really sweet. They have a daily rotating menu of lunch specials but I typically always get the sashimi lunch whenever I come here. Came here on a chilly night which is why I ended up ordering the dumpling soup. The size of the bowl was alright for an appetizer and it came with two pieces of dumplings. The dumpling itself is fairly large but I was also hoping there would be more than just two dumplings. This is alright for an appetizer but would probably not order this again. I also got the Totoro tower which I enjoyed more than the soup. The tower was pretty filling, super flavorful, and I really like how they plated this dish with the layers of sauces. One of my go to's when I'm in downtown A2. My boyfriend and I like to switch around whatever sushi we are craving for but I usually always get the tempura udon with our order. Super tasty! I have been walking past this restaurant for the longest time, and one day, I finally decided to go in, and I don't REGRET IT! The Ebi Shumai that they serve is steaming hot at the perfect temperature, and tastes delicious. They put little shrimps on top, which I was confused about at first, but it was such a great start to the meal. The rolls themselves are created so perfectly and I enjoyed every bite. The interior is pretty tight, I mean it's a small restaurant, but it can definitely get very crowded. It can be difficult to have a conversation inside, but the service and food makes up for it. Spicy California: this is my go-to roll at any restaurant and they execute it well here. Super large portion (I was uncomfortably full by the end but it was so good I kept eating). Last night I dreamt I went to Totoro again. This review is based on the Popcorn Lobster, and the Popcorn Lobster alone. I will not stand for slander of what is irrefutably a Top 3 Food. I've been ordering this same dish at Totoro for the past ~4 years. Whenever I leave or come back to Ann Arbor, this is often the first and last thing I'll eat. Is this place Nobu? Of course not. But does Nobu have the Popcorn Lobster Roll? Probably not. This sushi place is highly underrated. This is one of my favorite sushi places in Ann Arbor! I have never been disappointed in the food, it's all so good and such a good price! Be aware of dinner time and weekend, I have been stuck waiting for nearly an hour for a table. It's all worth it though! The Special California is my go to because it's easy and flavorful. My second go to is the lobster roll because it's the Special California roll with a lobster sauce and lobster bits on top. The mini udon is also a nice snack to start with, I've never seen a restaurant have smaller portions of udon. I wouldnt sat it's the most amazing udon, but it's still really good. The sushi is where it's at! All the sushi comes with soup and salad (even take out!) and salad I swear I could eat all day. I don't know why this place has only 3 stars but I highly disagree. I would give them a B for quality, C - for value. The takoyaki was a highlight, warm and chewy with a reasonable amount of octopus. They included tempura flakes as a garnish, which was a new one for me. The baked scallop roll was good, served warm, but the amount of scallop was incredibly meager. It was like they took a small piece of scallop, splintered it into tiny bits, and then stingily sprinkled it over the roll. There was a surprise free miso soup included with my food. The serving was very small, maybe 8 oz of liquid max, and it was incredibly bland and watery. A free little bonus item is always nice, but if it's going to be a little styrofoam cup of hot water, you might as well save the packaging cost.
