Yotsuba has been my go-to Japanese restaurant ever since I moved back to Ann Arbor in 2004; it was also my parents' go-to Japanese restaurant... we've been loyal customers for a long time. There have been some hit-or-misses with the quality of the fish but, I'm Japanese and, for me, "Japanese cuisine" is a lot more than raw fish and their kitchen (as opposed to the sushi bar) has always been reliable. Not so much anymore. :( I had dinner there recently on a Friday night. Ordered the tempura appetizer and 8-9 pieces of sushi a la carte. I asked the waitperson to make sure there was grated daikon for the tempura (I've had to ask before and the tempura was cold by the time they brought it, so I was planning ahead...) I was informed that not only do they not serve it with tempura, there's simply no daikon anywhere in the restaurant to grate. Seriously? First, how does a Japanese restaurant not have any daikon?? Second, if you serve tempura, this is a necessary condiment; it's akin to not having ketchup for a burger. I opted to have fried oysters instead and they were fine. The nigiri sushi I was served *looked* beautiful. Huge pieces of fish, nicely arranged. I'm not sure why Japanese restaurants here think "bigger is better" when it comes to sushi. Nigiri sushi is intended to be eaten in ONE comfortable bite instead of having to try to bite it in half only to have it disintegrate awkwardly all over the table. Why not offer two nigiri pieces per order that's reasonably (and correctly) sized? And then there's the sushi rice. I'm not convinced that the sushi chefs there understand that what makes it "sushi" isn't the fish (or the fancy rolls) -- it's the rice. Sushi rice is supposed to be flavored, while it's steaming hot, with a sugar-vinegar-salt mixture ("sushi su"), which is what keeps the rice moist and sticky in order to keep its shape, and also provide a foil for the fish. Whenever a sushi piece falls apart, it usually means (other than the fact that it's too big) that it's not properly seasoned. It should also never be cold. My simple meal plus a serving of sake, with tip came to almost $100. That's not unreasonably high for a Japanese sushi meal but I think I should be able to count on it being made correctly. read more

I've always ordered the same things: takoyaki, spicy duck ramen, or a dynamite roll. Everything usually tastes pretty good but that last 3-4 times I've been there, the ramen was lacking flavor and just not as satisfactory as I would have liked. The portions have also gotten slightly smaller and the prices are tolerable but not great for what you're getting. The ambience is nice though and the service is always very kind and attentive. It's definitely not my favorite place in the area and I have not felt like going there just because it hasn't been the best the past few visits. read more

I ordered pickup and when I arrived, the don't accept tap or Amex which was a shock to the system. Once I got to the car and seen the food, I was very disappointed. The "Sunday morning" that was suggested on the phone tasted soggy and odd. The Las Vegas roll was deep fried as well and the taste wasn't right. It tasted like it was sitting for a long time but I arrived 18 minutes after I called (was told 15 minutes for food to be ready). Hopefully better for the next customers. read more

The interior is quite large with lots of window seating, the booth we sat in was clean and comfortable. Our server was very nice and handled by request for no sesame seeds without issue. We ordered gyoza (pork), avocado roll, an asparagus tempura roll, spicy California roll, shoyu ramen, and miso ramen. The dumplings came out first, they were plentiful, crispy, and had a nice flavor. The miso ramen was enough for my teenage daughter and I to share, it had a nice comforting flavor and the noodles were perfectly bouncy. I tried some of the shoyu broth as well which was equally delicious. Side note: both ramen bowls came with a 4pc side of gyoza, which I did not realize! The only downside for me was the price of the entrees. Normally I would have ordered chicken katsu, but not at their $27 price tag. read more

First time trying after a lot of good recommendations. We shared tempura appetizer, sashimi - octopus, salmon roe, and snapper. In terms of rolls, we tried Centipede roll, napoleon and eel and avocado. The highlights were tempura and centipede roll. I didn't enjoy the minced (I think) salmon layer of the napoleon and the mayo sauce was tangy/didn't hit. Sashimi octopus was very chewy and salty (was the first time having this ever, if thats what it's like then it was spot on!) Service was very good, wait time was reasonable for a Friday night walk-in. The entrance and walk up was a nice vibe. Ambience was similar to a family diner with a bit of Asian decor. read more

Wow - my new favorite sushi takeout spot in Ann Arbor! I am a huge sushi fan, and am always searching for the freshest fish I can find in the area. This is by far the best I've had so far. The tuna was so fresh and delicious, perfectly ripe avocado. The service is wonderful, the staff was super friendly each time I've been in, and ordering was easy. Highly recommend! read more

I finally visited Yotsuba after having it on my list for a while. One thing to point out is that the service here is really good. Overall, the sushi is pretty good. I would recommend the caterpillar roll the most out of the 5 I got. I wouldn't get the one with the spicy tuna on top of crispy rice again due to the overwhelming amount of rice in proportion. The chicken was ok and could be seasoned more. I also got the scallops nigiri which tasted very fresh, but the salmon sashimi had 2 bones in it. read more

Been here several times and only now reviewing! I think they changed the interior over covid -- I remember there being kotatsu-esque booths that are closer to the ground but it seems they were replaced with regular booths. I didn't see any tatami rooms but maybe they were in another part of the restaurant. Food was great. Their bento box has a great spread including tempura, gyoza, fried siu mai, and katsu shrimp. You also get a little salad and pickles along with your chicken teriyaki. Sushi is solid (maki and nigiri). The fatty tuna is not worth the price. Good takoyaki. Service was kind but got a little spottier near the end of our visit. Definitely going to go back! Just know they don't seem to have an especially authentic Japanese restaurant experience environment-wise, but the food is decent! read more

What to do when you don't have anything in the refrigerator and you're starving? Order sushi! So this has been a place I have been numerous times over the years. I looked at the on line menu and noticed that there were things I had never tried. So tonight I'm going to try the Ika sugatayaki as well as things I know I love: The California roll with roe salmon nigiri Salmon roe Kick me for not remembering that I should just call the restaurant and place my order directly. Their online ordering goes through some thing called ZUPPLER. There was a service charge of $1.50 to use this service. Why not just talk to a human? No way to ask questions. I know you could be put on hold, but I guess I don't see the advantage to the on line ordering. But I am old fashioned. OK now for the food. The ika sugatayaki is grilled squid. It was tough. I cannot recommend it. I have had some amazing grilled squid, this was nothing like what I have had before. It was cut into thin rings. It must have been overcooked. the California roll was very good. They use crab salad not the crab stick. I prefer that. And it came with a good amount of roe on top. The salmon roe nigiri was ok, not a fresh tasting as I have had. The salmon nigiri was good, but also nothing special. The bill with tip (carry out , so no drinks) was $36.00. Disappointing overall. My sushi experiences have been limited, but I decided it's time to broaden by horizons. My fiance and I met with friends here earlier this week. We started with the shrimp and veggie tempura and miso soup, which was all delicious. We also ordered a variety of rolls to share. All were excellent. Dinner menu seems more expensive than lunch, but the portion should be large and enough. Tempura is delicious according to my Japanese colleague. Yakitori is my favorite dish during this dining, very juicy! The broth of udon is nice, though the seafood udon is just average. This is my go to place for sushi. It's always made fresh, the seafood is never overly fishy, which I know is a weird thing to say, and they have a good variety of rolls to choose from as well as chicken yakitori, which is one of my favorite things. It's very spicy and very crispy. I've also tried the bulgogi bowls and some of their hibachi. I love this restaurant I've gone at least 10 times in the last year. A gem in Ypsi though it's on the line of Ann Arbor so it's very close to Arborland where there are some shopping opportunities as well. read more

I love sushi but had never been to Yotsuba and I've lived in the area for 6 years! I can't believe I haven't been here sooner. The restaurant was very clean and comfortable and they accommodated my party of 9 adults and 1 child extremely well! The staff was very efficient and our food came out pretty quickly. It was a weeknight so that probably helped too. Everything was very fresh and delicious. Don't sleep on the desserts! I didn't have enough room to try anything else besides the mochi and a few bites of cheesecake but the sea salt caramel cake that my friends got looked AMAZING. Lovely presentation with whipped cream on top and my friend said it was the best cake he's ever had. The mochi was super yummy! It's filled with ice cream so it melts fast. Not the best but the worst experience when we came to yotsuba Ann Arbor supposed to be a much anticipated dinner. Haven't eaten a thing besides a slice of bread early morning, we choose this Japanese Restaurant because we have been going to their West Bloomfield location. We liked the ramen and the service in the other location. Unfortunately, in Ann Arbor we turned our backs and walked out. What happened was The guy server disregarded our request to be seated to the table of our choice. We were assigned to a small table that would make us feel uncomfortable. We plan to order more than two dishes which eventually the table he assigned us leaves no elbow room. We kindly ask for the table next to us which was a lot bigger. He refused. He said it is meant for 4 people. As we looked around, there were 4 empty tables. It was 5 pm and incredibly hungry, what could possibly be wrong if were seated to the available ones. He kept on insisting he was right. I'm sorry but we left and found a better asian restaurant less than a mile...Yee Siang Dumplings. Like Julia Robert's would say from her movie Pretty Woman...Big Mistake! When we got home, we cancelled our Groupon for Yotsuba. read more

This has been my favorite restaurant on the planet (yes, the planet) for the last 20 years. The only dining experience I have had that was close to this was a restaurant in Hawaii. The food has always been great and any errors have always been corrected quickly and efficiently. My favorite items are the bento box (especially when it has the seaweed salad & tamago!), sushi, sashimi, and teriyaki. Their "shrimp balls" were one of my favorite appetizers, but they took it off the menu over a decade ago. I've never had anything I disliked. The staff who have been here for 20 years or nearly that amount have always been wonderfully sweet and helpful. My only negative point of feedback is that miso soup AND house salad used to be offered with entrees until the last couple of years. This is disappointing because their ginger salad dressing is also one of the best dressings ever and sometimes I forget to order the house salad as a side, too. I understand rising prices due to inflation and other factors could call for this, but I would gladly pay higher prices for my soup/salad inclusion. I'm unsure if people didn't eat them and it was wasted, but a suggestion to prevent this is to ask if people want both the soup and salad before it is brought out to reduce waste. read more

The food is good but honestly not even as good as the places in metro Detroit or even the Ann Arbor area. Ambience is good and some of the wait staff is friendly. I went here on a date. It's kind of out of the way, but I would definitely go here again. They don't do reservations (at least not for 2 people) but we were seated immediately when we arrived. They have an extensive regular menu as well as the sushi menu. The waitress was very nice, kept our drinks filled, and was attentive but not overly so. My date ordered a bento box, and I ordered the beef teriyaki and an onion soup. The meals came with miso soup and salad (I omitted the miso soup from mine since I ordered the onion soup - they weren't able to substitute one for the other). We also ordered a shrimp spring roll as an appetizer. Everything we had was wonderful. It was fresh, cooked properly and was hot and delicious. The onion soup was especially outstanding - I could literally eat that every day and be happy. It's like an extra tasty version of the kind you get at a hibachi restaurant. The spring roll was also really unique - it had shrimp, mushroom and avocado in it. Yum. Overall, I recommend this place and will return! read more

Came here on a Saturday night for a sushi fix. This place is suddenly good, but I wouldn't push it into the outstanding categories. The service was pretty good-my waitress kept refilling my green tea, which I really appreciate it. My sister and I split a spider roll and a rainbow role, and then had a couple slices of salmon, scallops, and surf clan. The salmon and scallops were both excellent! The surf clam was a bit chewy, but it always is. Rainbow roll was very good. Spider roll seem to have some diced and minced crab inside of it. It was good, but it was different from most spider rolls I have had. I would come back. read more

They've always been fantastic, but tonight I ordered via doordash, and the dasher missed picking up part of the order, so Yotsuba personally sent out someone to deliver (waaaay outside of their delivery range) the food that was missed. This restaurant goes way above and beyond. I tried to tip the driver and instead they refused and returned what I'd originally tipped. I can't believe a restaurant is this kind. I wouldn't have blamed them even for the original miss, since the driver missed it. 10/10 I will continue to order from them often. read more

I love Yotsuba! The ambiance, service, and food are always of the highest quality. The restaurant is beautiful on the inside and out - I love how the building's architecture somewhat resembles a Japanese garden. I am from southern California, and I am incredibly grateful to have found this place in Ypsilanti. The fish is very fresh, and I even had real crab in my maki! AMAZING! Yotsuba is definitely pricier than other Japanese restaurants and cuisine available around the Ann Arbor area. I never had a lotus chip (on the Las Vegas roll) and not sure what the green crunch stuff was but I love trying new things and it was all delish! Food was all great, my rankings (from favorite to least favorite, tho they all were yum) are the Las Vegas, then centipede, then crunchy crab, then napoleon, then spicy tuna. This place has some great sushi if you're willing to put up with high prices (understandable given the current state of things) and rude customer service (less understandable) to get it. To clarify, I've ordered and received some excellent dishes and mostly excellent sushi, and then gotten some very mediocre ramen. I've given this place about 5 chances and 3 times have the servers made a rude comment about the amount of food I ordered? I'm giving you money, why do you care how much I ordered? One of them literally said, "I think that's plenty of food," after my mom and I had finished ordering. I thought it might have been a fluke but then it happened when I was dining alone TWO MORE TIMES. Maybe they think I'm too stupid to understand they're being condescending? Or they're too stupid to realize there are PLENTY of asian restaurants in Ann Arbor who provide excellent customer service? Either way, they won't be seeing a penny more of my money. read more
