New management knows what's up! I used to be "fine" with this place, but the meal we had last night was outstanding. Incredible service and it was apparent the food was fresh. We love agedashi tofu so have ordered it from nearly every place that offers it in town. This is easily the best. Perfectly fried with a rich, sweet broth. The tamago is made fresh (you can taste the difference) so definitely get it if you're a fan. Our maki rolls were all fantastic, I really don't think you can go wrong. They are very considerate about flavor and texture combos! Enjoyed a couple carafes of hot sake with our meal as well. We'll definitely be back! What a gem on that side of town. This place is a hidden gem!charming. Out server, Annie , was very hospitable and friendly. Efficient, as well. I met a group of friends after work here and was very pleasantly surprised. The inside is much more hip than the strip mall external appearance. They have an extensive menu featuring unique rolls and Korean delicacies, as well. The sushi is so high quality, so diverse, the menu has the "normal" offerings but done so much better than other places, the presentation is original...and we cannot say enough about the staff. Felt rushed by the staff and we wanted sushi but apparently they were short staffed and the waitress kept reminding us as if they didn't want us to order sushi.. and order kitchen items instead. Also wanted the avocado bomb as an appetizer but she said we can't order that because we are short staffed. We still ordered sushi and it was really good so I don't know what her problem was. As much as I love Japanese and Korean food, I am surprised that I haven't discovered this place earlier. I have been to the neighboring Lai Lai numerous times in the past, but never ventured into this gem. It was only on a recommendation from one of the workers at the nearby Galleria Market that I decided to check this restaurant out, and I am very happy that I did. I decided for my first visit at lunchtime to order a bowl of what my friends in Tokyo call the epitome of Japanese Soulfood: Oyakodon. This is a donburi (rice bowl), that features cooked chicken, egg, and onion on sticky rice. The name, literally means "parent-and-child rice bowl," and derives from the use of chicken (parent) and egg (child). Just about every city in Japan has a restaurant in their neighborhood that serves this dish. Usually, Oyakodon is made with dark meat from the thighs, but at Sushi Dabu they use white breast meat from the chicken, which gives it a much different taste. This is also true of other Japanese entrées they serve. I also noticed the meat was slightly dry, but my taste buds discovered that the dashi used to make the Oyakodon was lacking in flavor. So I asked the owner for a salt shaker to give it a boost. From what I was able to gather, the owners at Sushi Dabu believe in making their food as healthy as possible, using low sodium and no flavor enhancers. This would make completely sense, and is a heart-smart approach to cooking, which promotes a healthy living lifestyle. With that being said, they only offer Kikkoman Low Sodium soy sauce at the tables, which they use in their cooking methods. Finally, the interior of the restaurant is very clean, which also includes the bathrooms. Likewise, the new owners now serve sake, beer, and other alcohol products. Honestly, this is a place you can take your family, friends, and coworkers to for an enjoyable meal. The next time I go back, I am going to check out their sushi, and other entrées. Overall, the sushi quality was pretty good, but there were some misses and the price is pretty expensive for sushi in the area. My friend and I came here for dinner and shared an appetizer and a few sushi rolls and here were our thoughts: YAKITORI - 9.95 The chicken could have been a bit more grilled. It was cook thoroughly and wasn't dry, but could have more of that "charred" taste to it. Teriyaki sauce was underwhelming and boring and sat on a small plate of vegetables that wasn't very appetizing. I would not recommend this. SALMON ROLL - 5.95 I've never seen sushi presented in this way - each piece was shaped like a teardrop. It was interesting, but too much rice per piece, which made it hard to taste the fish. YELLOWTAIL & SCALLION ROLL - 8.95 I really liked this. The amount of scallions was perfect and the yellowtail was delicious. Expensive for a regular sushi roll, but at least it was good! KING SALMON ROLL - 13.95 I love the spicy heat in each and every bite. Good amount of salmon, cucumber made it nice and crunchy. I'd recommend this roll since it was pretty tasty. read more

I checked when I got to the restaurant, it now says 6:15 to 6:30! I would not have placed my order if I had to wait over an hour. I asked for a refund, was told I had to call Grubhub. Should have called the restaurant directly. Anyway, they are open for carry out only. So my sushi was fine. The size of the rolls was a little bigger in diameter than a quarter, not quite as big as a 50 cent piece. So smaller than some other places but it was ok for the price point. read more

If you LOVE spicy California rolls, this is for you. The Black Dragon was very generous with the pieces of eel on top, but I was put off by the rice being unseasoned and bland. I think this place is great when it comes to their non-raw rolls, not so much on Sashimi. As someone from California, it's really hard to find places around here that even come close the quality, and taste, of food that I'm used to. That being said, this place is pretty good. Both the Sushi and the Sushi Rolls taste fresh. As for the Tempura, you get shrimp, sweet potato, broccoli, onion, and cucumber. You can tell the Japanese food here has some Korean influence, but it's still not bad. As for the Korean food I've had so far, it's pretty darn good. If you're in the mood for soup, I highly recommend the Tofu Soups. They have a Beef version, a seafood version, and one with both. The soup comes out very hot, but that's part of the dish's charm. The "regular spicy" level isn't overwhelmingly spicy, which allows you to enjoy the flavor of the soup. The egg inside the soup is a nice touch as well. The tofu in the soup isn't too soft, but is firm enough to sink your teethe into as well. The broth itself is very flavorful, a nice balance of spicy, salty, and has a nice enhancement from the egg they put in the broth. They also don't skimp with the beef. They give you a lot! It also comes with some side dishes as well, a nice compliment to the soup! They a bunch of other good dishes I didn't mention, but my review is too long now. I found this place on Yelp when the need for sushi hit. The restaurant is fairly small but they have plenty of seating, with lots of booths on either wall and 4-top tables down the center. The menu was informative for a newbie like me, which was much appreciated. Service was prompt for the most part, especially considering the restaurant was about 75% full when we visited. Once we ordered, our sushi was delivered about a half hour later. Unexpectedly, we received complimentary cups of miso soup which helped with the wait. (I'm not sure if this is standard, or if it was because the kitchen was running behind.) The sushi was fresh and so flavorful. I got a roll called "Crazy Girl" with smoked salmon and cream cheese that was flash-fried then topped with eel sauce. Oh my gosh it was SO delicious. I wish I'd ordered two of those. My Philly roll was kind of lacking on salmon, so that was a bummer. My husband enjoyed his roll (whose name escapes me). Prices were reasonable. It's nearly the end of 2016 and I've been coming here since the 4Q of 2011. I cannot believe I have not written a review of Dabu Sushi. I can describe Dabu Sushi in one word: solid. In my opinion, just a notch below Yotsuba up the road and Miki across town but on par with Aki on Whittaker in Ypsi, Bewon on Plymouth, and Biwako in Saline. I enjoy the robust beef bi bim bap. They serve brown rice now too. Also highly recommended are the fabulous chicken, beef, tempura, and salmon bento boxes. I have also enjoyed the shrimp and veggie appetizer. I think the prices and portions are about right for what they charge. Definitely good food here. The menu is focused on traditional and classic dishes which they do well.
