My parents wanted to show me this awesome place they found for lunchtime. Just on broadway, they started popping in here after medical center visits. Closed on Mondays, I think my dad scheduled his treatments around their hours because he likes it so much. There is a strong smell of disinfectant when you walk in that doesn't mix well with whatever smell is coming from the pipes but I recall this same issue at this location long before it was Plate. No worries. It's clean and welcoming. We sat, my dad choosing a bench side table with a cushion. I ordered a couple appetizers from the order pad at the table while we waited for our third person. Hot tea, water l, edamame and takoyaki. All very good. The woman that greeted us was so warm and friendly. She was also our server. I ordered the sushi lunch bento. They had teriyaki beef bento. I didn't know the bentos came with a single Tako ball or I wouldn't have order the app but don't skip on the app. It's a good order with tempura flakes and eel sauce. I forgot to snap a pic of them. The bento was excellent. Right temps, great quality and assortment. I couldn't finish it. Packed a box to finish later. I genuinely wanted to fall in love with this place , you can tell the owner put so much passion and effort into every detail, which I truly admire. I even visited twice before writing this review because I wanted to be fair. Both times, I ordered the bento box (tried the chicken, salmon, and beef). While the presentation was awesome, I felt the dishes were a bit too fried and oily, and the flavors were quite tasteless and mild. The sushi (California rolls), however, was the highlight : fresh, generous, and delicious! I really appreciated that part. For improvement, Some small details could make a big difference. For example, they didn't have yum yum sauce, and the salad portion was quite small and it is just cucumber. The service could also be more attentive ( though the owner personally checks on guests, which shows her genuine care and hospitality.) The restaurant is clean and cozy, with a nice atmosphere. I love that they use a digital menu, but a little more explanation of the dishes would help guests choose more confidently. Overall, with a lot of work and effort, this place has good potential and a lot of heart behind it for a small business. Busy, busy with little parking but food is well worth looking for a place to park. Staff will put you on a wait list and will call with the time they give you. Pricing for four was exceptional. The Plate has a large seating area but fills up fast depending on the time of day you choose to eat. Food was phenomenal with lots of choices. Establishment was clean and well staffed. Visited a Saturday afternoon with some friends. The spot was almost empty, so we were able go get a table immediately for our party of four. I ordered the salmon teriyaki plate. The salmon was a bland, despite having the teriyaki sauce. Similarly, the miso soup was lacking flavor as well. However, the stir fried veggies were very good, with a bit of crunch to them. The tempuras were also good and crunchy. Lastly, the sushi was tasty, would say the best of everything in the plate. My friend ordered a couple of rolls and they were actually very good, would say that if you visit this restaurant, stick to the sushi rolls and skip the rest. Service was great by a lovely young lady. I ordered the shrimp tempura roll and the chicken yakisoba. We were started with a small serving of cucumber salad and miso soup. Delish! I did not inquire about the sushi roll and was disappointed to find that it was a cream cheese(?) roll, not a classic fish or eel roll. Otherwise; the meal was fine, Miso was served lukewarm, not hot enough for me. My server was Elise/Elisa(?). She was knowledgeable and attentive without being obsequious. The bento are overpriced for the amount of food you get, but that's Ann Arbor. My chicken was burned and dry. Cute Northside eatery with a varied menu of Japanese favorites! Tried the lunch menu with a friend, and wanted to try the namesake - sushi and chicken. I got their poke bowl, which comes with an option of two fish, crab salad, seaweed salad, edamame, avocado, ginger, cucumber, and a side of sauce (which the bowl honestly didn't even need as the fish tasted fresh and flavors were great)! My friend got the tonkatsu bento box which was beautiful and had all kinds of goodies in it. Then we also got an order of popcorn chicken to share, and ordered "half and half" flavors to try both the honey butter and soy garlic. This was a lot of chicken! Ordered popcorn chicken with sweet spicy sauce, Futo maki roll, spicy California roll, Mexican roll, kimchi ($2), house salad and seaweed salad too. $60.69 The house salad, seaweed salad, kimchi are all okay. The kimchi is much more sour than I was expecting, The popcorn chicken is so-so, breading is a bit heavy to me. Lots of void breading with no chicken in it. Sriracha isn't the green bottle, Huy Fong brand at all, tasted off. We decided to eat our rolls without it as it ruined the flavors of the rolls instead of enhancing them. The futomaki is bland and cold. The spicy California is decent with added cream cheese ($0.75) and green onions. The Mexican roll is pretty good, but I feel it would have been better with the roll fried and then topped with a slice of fresh jalapeño instead of the pickled jalapeño. Then again I am not a fan of pickled jalapeño at all. The only hiccup was the take-out system; our order was estimated in 30 minutes, but it was an extra 15 of waiting in the parking lot. This review took long time... It took me three weeks, multiple versions and finally, I got something together lol.... First visit was take out of 10 wings - 1/2 & 1/2. In fact, one customers decided to get their own refill, walked up to the coke machine, got his refill lol. It took a while to get water and the diet coke that I ordered and almost didn't get a refill... I went with the following: - Chicken wings small (5 pcs) - Sweet and Spicy - Spicy Tuna & Spicy California - Tempura Udon - Diet Coke & Water Miso Soup & Cucumber Salad - these came with the sushi order (don't quote me though lol). Their miso soup was excellent - just the way I like it. You might been to other sushi joints and their miso soup looked light brown or under seasoned... not here... they added perfect amount of miso to perfectly season the soup. Cucumber salad was ok, nothing special, seasoned with sugar and vinegar. Spicy Tuna & Spicy California rolls - nothing special to write home about. It's on par with those you buy at the local grocery store unfortunately. The word "spicy" should be removed as it had no hint of spice at all. Tempura Udon - for $11, skip the udon. The broth was very bland and it had heavy bonito flavor. The tempura was served on the side, which was nice, nobody likes soggy fried food! It contained - two shrimps, zucchini, onion and sweet potato. Looks like the zucchini, onion and sweet potato are made in house. The batter could been thinner, one portion of the onion had thick batter that was undercooked. Wings - didn't get radish with the order lol, so confirmed they do not serve radish, looks like they did when they opened... the wings are large, coating was too thick. I would recommend you get the sauce on the side to dip into as the wings are not seasoned. Overall, decent place. Would be nice if they hired more people and checked on the tables more often. Looks like lot of folks come here for the bento, so I guess I'll need to come back one more time to check it out. read more

My husband and I ordered delivery from here for our Valentine's Day dinner and OMG it was wonderful! I got the bento box with popcorn chicken and it was SO much food! It came with the aforementioned popcorn chicken (I got the soy garlic glaze and it was great), a scoop of rice, shrimp and veggie tempura, several bites of appetizers (edamame, a skewer of sausage and a rice cake, and one piece of takoyaki), and a California roll. I also got a piece of salmon sashimi because it's my favorite and it was fantastic. So buttery and fresh. Next time I'll definitely want to try more sushi, but the bento box will be hard to resist. My husband ordered the pork katsu and at first he commented that he wished it came with more rice but by the end he said it was actually the perfect amount because he was so full. Plate Sushi & Chicken is in the same strip of businesses as Broadway Cafe & Hoagie north of the Medical Campus. That makes it a convenient new option for nearby students to order take-out. The inside was well kept by the staff in terms of cleanliness. It appears there was a second dining room on the other side of the interior wall which would increase their seating capacity to over 40 customers. The menu had two sheets with the first page listing categories such as appetizers, donburi bowls, bento boxes, noodles (udon, yakisoba), and chicken wings. The second page contained the sushi offerings. To match the business name, I chose a sushi special roll and a small order (5 pcs) of chicken wings for my meal. The roll was named the Fire Work which had a California base that was topped with spicy cooked crab, scallop, and masago. The heat factor was medium as there was enough spiciness that left a slight buzz on my tongue. The prices for all the rolls made me feel like I was two decades back in time. The most expensive varieties cost $13 for eight pieces and even a basic six-piece California roll had a price tag of only $4.50. Local grocery markets charge more than that for sushi sold in their deli section that is not nearly as fresh. The chicken wings that I selected had a half and half flavor combination of Soy Garlic and Sweet & Spicy. The latter had a medium level of heat. The crispiness of the batter was good, and the wing size was okay for $2 apiece. My server came by frequently to refill my water glass and to clear the empty plates. The affordable prices for the majority of their items were the biggest reason for my four star rating of Plate Sushi & Chicken. read more

Plate just opened in the strip mall on Broadway and Plymouth. They serve Korean fried chicken and Japanese food, including sushi---I believe that their sushi chef was formerly the chef at at Totoro. They also have several vegetarian options. Their Korean fried chicken is good--the small size (5 pieces) was $10, and the quality is on par with what I remember from Seoul Street, but Plate has a much shorter wait time and nicer service. The lunch bentos are really good value and come with a lot of food (including rice cake and sausage skewers!); the tonkatsu is on the thin side, and the sushi is on par with other places in Ann Arbor. The takoyaki ($6) and unagi don ($16) were both pretty good as well; I liked that the sauce wasn't overly sweet. The interior of the restaurant is quite cute, and service is super friendly and nice. After you order your meal, you are served miso soup and cucumber salad. During your meal, your server takes your empty plates and fills your water continuously. The mackerel was firm. The rice excellent. The poke bowl was not mine to taste but next time I will have that too. There were several rolls enjoyed by the table. Very nice seaweed salad. The bento box quite varied in selection. I do not remember if someone had some wings, but I think I did see some small bones in the cleanup of the table which our hosts took on themselves. We came in on a Wednesday night and the place was packed. Quickly understood why - the food and service were excellent. They have overflow seating in another part of the building and so we were seated right away. The food came out quickly and the service was great even though we were away from the main dining area. We ordered several sushi rolls and they were fresh and delicious. I also had the tempura appetizer and it was crispy, had a nice selection of veggies (and thankfully no broccoli - which just turns into a ball of greasy dough most of the time) and not at all greasy. We also had the spicy garlic edamame, which is messy if you eat it with your hands (use your chopsticks) but addictive. The gyoza were really good too. Ok but as good as all that was, dessert was the highlight. I repeat - do NOT skip dessert. The Snow dessert is an absolute treat - I had the red bean, my son had the mango and my husband had the strawberry. It's basically heaven - shaved milk ice topped with either red beans or ice cream with fruit. It's difficult to explain but I would come to this restaurant for just this dish.
