Had an awesome time here recently with a friend for lunch. The staff is so friendly here, and their menu has tons of options. We both had the lunch bento (katsu chicken and katsu pork), and it's a generous portion as you'd expect from a bento. The tempura was particularly good. I wish my katsu came with a side of okonomiyaki sauce (or had more on it), but that's a personal preference because I'm a sucker for that stuff. Miso soup came with our meals, too. We also split a bottle of Jinro Lemon soju and just had the best time catching up. I think the quality and prices here are comparable to most places around town, but we had a very pleasant and comfortable experience. I'd be happy to return for more future bentos! read more

I was disappointed that the salmon and tuna rolls literally only had that protein in it and nothing else. The shrimp tempura appetizer was good but strangely was served with AI sauce? I really enjoyed the tonkatsu ramen and the my go to is salmon avocado! The service was good and they gave us freebies (yay). I would highly recommend! It was a cold and rainy weekday. With the weather having recently turned full-on fall, I needed something piping hot to keep me warm. After a quick perusal of Yelp, I decided to try out a new place. Tucked away in a small shopping center on Plymouth, Saica is unassuming from the outside, but is a cozy respite from the ordinary on the inside. The decor is clean without being spartan, and tables are spaced perfectly so it doesn't feel too snug. We were seated quickly and I decided almost immediately on the Bulgogi Udon. A short wait later my meal arrived, and it didn't disappoint. Hot, umami, and with perfectly slurpable noodles, I didn't hold back as I enjoyed my food. I think I finished it in record time, and didn't leave any room for dessert (a reason to come back, then!) There's an enticing-looking sushi bar that we didn't take advantage of on this trip, but I'll bookmark that for our next outing! read more

I've been coming here for the last 4 years and I feel right at home. The service is always great! The owner has been running his successful business for 26 years now! Every time I come in the food is amazing! You can watch the sushi being made at the sushi bar and see the art they make so very detailed and beautiful craftsmanship! I've talked with the sushi bar tenants every time and they always teach me something new. I've also had many times that I've eaten in the restaurant itself and always try something new so far everything I've tried has been very exquisite and appetizing! The scene is an great setting. The decor and art adds a great touch to the restaurant as well. Quite a pleasant aroma of the food adds to the scene as well. I'd definitely recommend trying them out! Whether by yourself, with friends, family, or out on a date. I've done it all and always had a pleasant time! Had sushi here last week, it was great. So today I ordered the Tonkatsu ramen and a side of pork bellies. I paid $30 for little more than a weak ambiguous broth with chicken nuggets in it. I had expected a traditional rich pork broth with pork bellies. The side of pork was worse, fried tasteless thin strips of leather. I didn't even eat it. Ok I hate giving bad reviews. But hopefully Saica will improve the quality of these items and/or nobody else will make the mistake to order them. read more

There was this addict yet savory two fried shirt crispy not overly crunchy chicken combo...cay soo(?). The red curry was REALLY good just wish the coconut milk base was thicker. The meal began with a small side salad with a garlic sauce along with a small bowl of Miso soup. Thr main course had these crispy deep fried vegetables. Which were good but would have been better raw(in my opinion). But please dont think I had an issue. That is NOT the issue. Please stop by and enjoy all that they have to offer. We ordered carryout using their convenient online ordering. Our food was ready when they said it would be and everything was well packaged. I had the volcano roll and fried tofu and both were very tasty. A friend had the salmon teriyaki deluxe and he said that it was good. It came with soup and several other sides and was a lot of food. I cannot believe this place does not get more hype. The Korean/Japanese crossover is iconic. We stumbled upon it because the neighboring Indian restaurant was closed indefinitely. We were no longer disappointed as soon as we got the food. The Yaki Mandu appetizer was one of the best I've had, crisp, amazing stuffing, and the sauce that paired was flavorful. Very good ginger salad and the best miso soup I've ever had. The Red Curry dish was one of our favorites, it has a strong coconut base flavor and a sweet mild spice, SO GOOD. The chicken was great and all the veggies on it were amazing. We also ordered 3 sushi and they amazing. The best tempura California I've ever had, crisp yet soft! Best sushi I've found near the Ann Arbor area. High quality and fresh fish, this sushi joint was good. The sticky rice was cooked well and the rolls were creative. We had the 3 piece salmon $8 (great deal!) and Ikura $3.75 nigiri and miso soup $2 which were all delicious, and the miso didn't come straight from a can it was good. I had the cherry blossom roll which was DELISH and topped with ikura! $14. The unaju was also cooked well $24, we enjoyed it. I will be back to saica! read more

I can't believe this place doesn't have a higher rating!!! We just moved here from Hawaii, which has a TON of Japanese food. Trust us when we say this place tastes great! Our favorites were the unaju and the dragon roll. The unagi was incredibly silky soft and delicious!! It was actually better than some of the ones we tried back home. I recommend trying the half & half roll with the dragon and red dragon (pictured on the left). It's a great way to try different rolls. We also got the firecracker roll and the tempura appetizer. Both were also delicious! The tempura was just as good as back home. The restaurant was very clean and has a nice vibe to it. The food also came super fast! We came around 6:30 pm and it wasn't crowded. It got more busy around 7:30/8 pm. read more

My husband and I recently discovered Saica when we were hunting for restaurants open for lunch near the pottery studio we go to. Saica is just down the road and we decided to give it a try. We've been back many times and each lunch is absolutely delicious. We keep getting the same things because we've become addicted: Thai Red Curry and Thai Green Curry. The two speciality rolls both came with miso soup, which was really good. The house salad was $2 and good but small and not worth it. Both specialty rolls were very good and super filling. Spicy California was good but didn't wow me. A good deal for 8 pieces for $5, though. The service was VERY quick. My pickup order was ready within 15 minutes after ordering and they send emails letting you know it's ready. Overall, would recommend this place if you're in this part of Ann Arbor and craving sushi and don't want to make the trip downtown! We used to be regulars a year or two ago, but haven't been back recently until dinner Friday night...we were so WOW'ed we dinnered here Sat night. Shout out to JAY!!! for providing top service and allowing combo dish substitutions and bringing extras :D Like many other "Japanese" restaurants in the area, they also have an extensive Korean menu as well. This is our favorite take-out sushi restaurant in AA. Coming from the Chicago food scene, we haven't found a 5-star sushi place in AA. We don't love some dishes on the menu, hence the 4-stars, but we love their Geisha roll, Alaska roll, spicy scallop roll, and shrimp tempura roll. Red Curry Ramen, and Tonkotsu Ramen are also great! Went to Lunch there today with my wife, daughter, and her boyfriend. Ann Arbor was a zoo. Some crazy FOOL FESTIVAL or something. We tried to go downtown and couldn't find a parking spot anywhere. We decide to head back to her apt. On the way we saw Saica. We decide to try it. Daughter is a veggie foodie, while the rest of us are carnivores.This place fit the bill. All types of food for each our own taste. I ordered the Combo B. To my surprise I got two full meals. Needless to say I got dinner for tonight. Everybody had leftover that we took home.So each spent about $20 for a total of$80 which is not bad in AA. Even though this was out on Plymouth Rd it is really not that far from downtown AA. We got sat immediately, which would never happen downtown. Quick service. Place is clean and quiet...I don't like going to eat and you can't talk to your companions. I'll be sure to come hear more, especially during the Art Fair. read more

This place has the best red and green curry most of the time (recently we've had a few that are curdled), the sushi is decent, and the soups are good. However, in the past few years the prices have gone up (can't blame them for that), but the portion sizes have really shrunk. The curry's and soups used to be enough for 2 adult servings, now it's barely 1. If you're going to almost double your prices, at least keep the serving sizes... read more

Saica or Nagomi, Saica or Nagomi... That's the question you're faced with when looking for sushi around north campus. Today, we decided Saica, and I'm glad we did! This is because of the lunch special. It was 3 pieces of sushi (salmon, tuna, yellowtail), 6 pieces of sashimi (2 of each of the aforementioned fish), 2 fried California rolls, a salad, and spicy tuna don. For just $12!! Now, I'm not sure how often they have this particular special, but I think this might be the only thing I'd ever get here. The regular lunch specials seemed pretty pricy, especially if you want sushi. Their regular rolls are pretty cheap, spicy salmon/tuna for around $5, but their special rolls get pretty expensive (around $12). The fish was pretty fresh, but the pieces were pretty small. One thing that was surprising was how fresh their wasabi was! There are a lot of places where the wasabi is pretty flat, and doesn't have that nostril-piercing effect, but Saica's wasabi was definitely sinus-clearing! Anyway, their spicy tuna don was probably the best thing. There wasn't a lot of tuna, but the flavor was really good and mixed really well with the rice. It was also REALLY spicy! Apparently they have a full sized order of it, but I don't know if I'd be able to handle that much! Based off of just this experience (it was my first time), I'm going to give it a 4 because the special was great. However, from the prices and portion size, I'd probably give Saica a 3 on average. Compared to Nagomi's lunch specials, Saica is definitely more pricy with fewer options. Their fish quality seems good, but in order to explore some of the more creative/special rolls, you'll have to be willing to spend some extra money. The rotating lunch specials, however, can be a great deal, but of course it totally depends on what their special is that particular day. read more

It's actually about a 3 1/2. They do simple well here at Saica. The nigiri and a bowl of chirashi were the hits. Fish is nicely sliced into generous mouthfuls and tastes quite fresh for Michigan. It's not terribly cheap but it is quality. The rolls were just ok, not as impressive to my palette. I have gotten more interesting elsewhere cheaper. I like spicier rolls and they just weren't bringing it. Service was slow considering the fact that it was not busy or anything. I had to wait for more tea and every part of our little feast seemed to drag out. The atmosphere was soothing and quiet but if we had been in a rush I would have been peeved. I liked it but it just wasn't anything special for the price. If I came back I would stick with basics. read more

I met some friends for lunch at Saica. (They've been there before & recommended it.) I arrived late & they'd already ordered some appetizers: dumplings & 2 other things I didn't recognize. All were ok. Not outstanding, but not bad. One of my friends ordered the spring rolls & the chuka salad, and the other had the lunch bento box. I ordered chicken teriyaki. After a few minutes, the server came back & told the 1st friend that they were out of spring rolls! That seemed odd to me; it was just a bit after noon, and I would've thought that was a staple item. She just had her salad & shared a bit of our entrees. I don't know how the bento box was (my friend didn't really say anything one way or another), but I found my chicken to be rubbery, on the cold side, and rather tasteless. The edamame beans were also on the cold side and tough. The tempura (I think it was a carrot & maybe an onion) was non-descript and lacked any real flavor. It's sushi, the raw fish is decently fresh for Michigan, the rice to fish ratio is good, and it's priced fairly for sushi. If you live in central campus and usually go to Sadako or Totoro, this is a good place to mix it up. The inside is spacious and clean. My two rolls came out in 10-15 minutes, pretty standard stuff, no complaints. read more

The menu is really diverse and has the flavor of a more upscale Korean-owned Japanese restaurant. Sushi is pretty decent, tastes fine and seems pretty fresh. Ambience inside is fine. As far as Northside-area sushi places go, this is probably one of the better ones. It was my first time visiting... I was having lunch with old friends and they recommended Saica. Walked it and felt like I was in a warehouse... instead of walls, they have tarps that divide the dining area from the kitchen... this is the best way I could describe it. After getting our water, we went with six different kind of rolls for three of us to share. So what did I think? Sushi - 2 stars, it's simple and nothing fancy... their rolls with other local sushi joints reminds me of rolls you would pick up at Meijer/Kroger.... nothing special. Service - hit or miss... seemed like they have two folks working on our visit... waited for long time to get extra water and to get our food. Overall, not bad. They do serve Korea foods in addition to Sushi. Not sure if I'll be back, but if I do, I just hope they have more staff working. read more

The dinner combos here are the best. You can get a Saica Udon plus chirashi don or unagi don and various other combinations of entrees for about $15. It's a good amount of food -- enough for 2 meals if you have the self-discipline to save one of the entrees in a take-out box instead of pigging out like I always do. I hate to leave a bad review because I really wanted this place to be good. It's a great location. However I've eaten here 3 times now and never had a good meal. I couldn't even eat my meal - bulgogi udon - this past time as it was so greasy that it tasted and smelled like gasoline. The sushi is mediocre. The service is unfortunately really bad. They also have some deals where, depending on how many house special rolls you get, you can potentially get some things for free (such as a drink, regular roll, appetizer, etc.) Overall, would recommend. I've been eating occasionally at Saica for 3 or 4 years, and it's always been a mediocre experience. Service is always slow, always forgetting things here and there, but the food is pretty good and the prices are good too. Last night, I've decided not to go back to Saica after finding a rather nasty looking bug in my udon--to be precise, a "Brown Marmorated Stink Bug" about an inch long. (Look it up, you'll lose your appetite too) Yep, definitely not a good experience. What was worse than the bug though was the complete lack of effort shown to remedy the issue. Waitress casually said "Oh, I'm sorry. Did you want a replacement?". For such a small restaurant that I've been frequenting for several years, the owner didn't even show his face for an apology either. Lastly, the cheque arrives with a 18% Gratuity slapped on. I had eaten with my family, and there was no mention anywhere on menus or signs that a Gratuity would automatically be charged for a party of 5. We had waited for food for over 30mins, had to ask for utensils which they forgot to set, tables were sticky and we had to asked for them to wipe it down, and the Bug's Life Udon special. Definitely did not agree with the mandatory 18%, but oh well. Not coming here again. read more
