Hmm based on the reviews I was expecting a lot more...especially when it comes to hot dogs from a place supposed to be known for hot dogs. Coming from Rhode Island with hot weiners I have high expectations for what they call the 'Texas dog' and I can say that they didn't even come close. A dog with meat sauce, mustard and onions...The bread was a majority of the dog with a mountain of yellow onions that left so much of a bite I couldn't take another. The dogs were really big and seemed to be cut in half but the casing was tough and the dogs were not of quality. The stars given were simply to account for the memorabilia and history of the establishment which was cool to see. Overall, the dogs made us sick and left us disappointed but the history is worth the trip? Maybe just don't get the hotdog. read more

Came in for breakfast on a Friday morning with my dad. First visit for both of us and the servers were all very friendly and attentive! We sat in a booth and ordered two omelettes. I had a ham and cheese with rye toast and my dad ordered a western omelette, but swapped the ham out for sausage and asked for two sides of scrapple and home fries. The omelettes were stuffed. I've never seen so much sausage in an omelette as I did that morning. The rye toast was only very lightly toasted.. I prefer a little crisper. My dad's home fries were seasoned well and the scrapple was thin and crispy. He loved it. The inside of the restaurant is small and homey with all of the expected diner touches (signs, and barstools, etc.). There are two unisex bathrooms and the one I used was a little dirty. If we're looking for diner food in the area, I think we would definitely stop in again for a quick bite. read more

Another reasonable priced food spot in a tourist areas. The service welcomed and seated you. The tables and chairs are new and clean. The waitress was kind enough to put my crabby daughter in her place. It was very welcomed. I ordered just a cheeseburger and onion rings. Do not eat the hotdogs! Whenever we travel to a new place we look for historical lunch/breakfast spots that specifically serve hotdogs like they used to in the past. I will now rethink doing this. The Texas dog is made with a bun that is bigger then the hot dog and dry/cold bread. The hotdog itself has a tough rubbery casing and is thick so they cut it in half to cook it. The meat sauce or chili whatever it is doesn't add flavor. They top the hot dog with 1/4 cup (ridiculous amount) worth of diced onions, just raw. I removed half of them and it was still a noticeable onion bite to the whole thing. Later on Saturday night I started throwing up after an odd feeling since eating here. Here it is Monday morning and my stomach is still not right... DO NOT ORDER THE HOTDOGS. I am so disappointed that I tried this place. Besides the pictures and museum feel these people are disgracing their ancestors by serving these hotdogs and claiming this is what they served in the past. Ernie's at one time was a great place to meet friends and catch a great hot dog with or 2 on 1. No longer the same as there is no atmosphere whatsoever. Waitresses are very good at their work but seem management is lacking in many ways. The restrooms need much improvement and we will let it at that. Restaurant is very small and mirrors were put on back walls to try and give a larger effect but didn't work. Now parking is a real issue as there is none. Large parking lot across street but belongs to someone else and you'll get towed away if you don't shop the store it is intended for! read more

Basic greasy spoon diner... very limited menu... very bland food but good coffee and good service despite there being only one server for the place. The place is clean despite previous reviews. The breakfast was just super bland even the home fries were bland I ordered with with onions per the menu but I'm pretty sure there were no onions in them. They must be saving them for the hotdogs. Great family owned business since 1921. It's an adorable little diner with friendly fast service and the breakfast was delicious.

Loved the atmosphere and the fact it had been run by three generations - there is a great graphical history on the wall with photos. Very clean, cheerful and bright interior - every other booth is clearly marked for social distancing and same with seats at counter. Very welcoming and friendly staff. Food and service is good - great all around lunch experience. I got the grilled cheese and shared some of my husband's French fries which were cooked just perfect. Definitely worth a stop to check out this 3rd generation family owned business. Plus today was free Fauschnaut Day with every meal. How friendly is that! read more

Well.........my Dad's name was Ernie and I currently live in Texas. So........how could I pass this place up while in Gettysburg? Went there for breakfast a couple of times and once for lunch. It's as true diner - nothing fancy - just good food. The service is dicey when it gets crowded, but it's not terribly slow. If you're going there for breakfast, get there early and avoid the rush. If you want simple choices with good service with no frills, then look no farther. My son and I stopped on our way through for college visits on a Monday. Note: there is not much open on Mondays in PA. Be aware. We had breakfast. The bill for both of us on the way out was 20 bucks. We both got decent size dishes of food. Coffee was good. This was a neat little place off the square in Gettysburg. The "Texas" in the title is very deceptive. As a Texan, I really didn't see anything on the menu that made me think of Texas. It had a northern/east coast menu with cream chipped beef over toast, open faced roast beef sandwich with brown gravy, gravy fries, hot dogs, and other various sandwiches. Staff was wonderful. Food was good. The atmosphere is old fashioned diner. We sat at the counter on built in stools. It was a great place to visit. Recommend it if you are ever in town. read more

First and only time I'll eat here. I ordered the ham steak and cheese sandwich with gravy fries and wife ordered patty melt with fries. Ham and cheese was just a piece of ham with a slice of melted American cheese on cold hamburger bun. Gravy fries was lumpy gravy that tasted like it came out of a jar over slightly warm unseasoned fries. Wife enjoyed her patty melt, which is the only reason for second star. It's been 15 years since my last visit, and a dinner stop at Ernie's after a day at Ski Liberty was a no-brainer. 15 years, and Ernie's has lost nothing. It's been there since 1921- or so the pictures on the wall show- but the decor is more along the lines of 1950. My years at Gettysburg College taught me that there was no order better than "two with on one"- two chili dogs, smothered in mustard and onions- with a side of fries with gravy. No, I don't usually eat that way, but come on...this is permissible, at Ernie's. Food came out quickly, and service was great. Total bill for me and the boy was $15. Can't beat that with a stick! And yes, Ernie's now apparently takes credit cards. Or, at least, they took mine. It doesn't get any more real than Ernie's. Ok being an old Navy guy I am a sucker for chipped Beef. It's kind of liKe sausage gravy but made with dried beef. A staple in military food. This plaace is a diner known for its TEXAS famous hot dogs. Cooking hotdogs are available even at 6am. The chi Poed beeff was awesome. Coffee was great and the place was very clean and friendly. I walked into Ernie's not knowing what to expect. When I walked in it definitely had 50s style diner vibes but also kinda of dirty vibes. Not as clean as if could have been. There was a lady standing behind the cash register in the front when we walked in and didn't look at us. After standing there a little awkwardly for about 2 minutes my dad leaned over and asked if we could just seat ourselves and she said it was fine. We took the only empty booth and the table had not yet been cleaned. We ordered our food very quickly after being seated and then proceeded to wait 35 minutes for our food. Now, I'm a very understanding person and I've noticed basically every business these days has a "now hiring" sign so I understand they're probably short staffed. But here is my issue. The waitress came over with the check before we received our food and asked "how was everything?" I think it's very little to ask that you should at least know the tables that have and have not been served. The food finally came out and the portions were fairly small but definitely enough to get you full in the morning. But, this made me question the 35 minute wait when my dad literally ordered 1 sausage patty and 1 plate of home fries. I had a sausage egg and cheese sandwich and home fries. The sandwich was solid but the home fries weren't anything to write home about. All in all I might go back but really only to give them a second chance. If a friend was coming to Gettysburg I'd probably tell them to just try something different! read more

We stopped here for the famous Texas Lunch hot dog. The dog itself wasn't bad (as far as I could tell). The "chili" was about as bland as I've experienced. Not much more than ground beef with a few spices. The onions? Now I love me some onions, however the dog was piled high with a mound of some extremely, finely chopped onions. I felt as if I was eating an onion sandwich. The dog and the lifeless chili didn't have a chance against that massive blob of onions, which were chopped so fine that they had a very odd texture. For the second dog I scraped off some of the onions but it was still overwhelmed. I've had dozens of "Texas" dogs in a number of states but I don't think I've had worse. An extra star added because the hotdog itself wasn't so bad, from what little I could taste of it. read more

With a Texas name I assumed this place was BBQ or south western themed. uh...no. It is a diner. In the classic style. Like except for the soda machine I don't think they've updated anything since the Nixon administration. The menu is limited to typical diner faire but in that light it is good, fast and inexpensive. In a town where they seem to be determined to soak the tourists for $12 and change I got a cheese burger, french-fries, a beer and a coke. Easily the best value you're getting for your money. The food came fast and while it was no better than you'd expect in a diner, it was no worse and while the fries were flavorless and needed ketchup there were a lot of them, it was a good sized portion that two people could have split, the cheeseburger was pretty good. So why only two stars? Well the food isn't exciting or different but more than that there was a vague sense of aged to it. The booths were small. Two people could have a nice time but more than that start to get crowded. The table was wet when I sat down. It had just been cleaned but not dried. I had to get out a couple of napkins to dry it off and my glass wasn't clean. it wasn't dirty as in 'can I have another' but it had marks and streaks on it of too many washes. I felt like I was in as commercial and the hostess was about to whisk it out of my hands and declare "We've got spots, we can't serve these!" For a quick, inexpensive meal this place is just fine, but in a town with so many great places to eat, it really doesn't stand out. read more

This place,is an American classic. Just celebrated their 100th anniversary, and still in the family. Hot dogs are a work of art. Just the right size, and grilled to perfection to bring out just the right amount of snap from the natural casing. Mild bean less chili is tasty, and the finely chopped onions add jus he amount of bitterness. Fries are cooked perfectly. Service is fast and super friendly. Pluses... lunch for two at $20 plus a tip is reasonable, The waitress was extremely friendly and personable, and the service was fairly prompt. Minuses... The food was not very good. (And I'm being kind here) We both had cheeseburgers. The rolls were refrigerator cold, the ground beef burgers did not taste very good and I question whether they were even grilled, actually it tasted like they may have been microwaved? The fries were soggy and tasteless and the onion rings squirted out lots of fluid (I think cooking oil?) when cut. The Decour was pretty neat... Reminded me of the 50s. But the countertops and painted areas were worn and chipped. And the floors looked pretty dirty. I wish I had the good experience of many of the other diners at this restaurant...
