The cake was amazing...I had a cake filled weekend to prove it. I bought a carrot cake, which they nicely re-iced with fresh made icing. Also, slices of hummingbird and German chocolate. My family loved the carrot cake, especially my aunt who prefers raisins instead of nuts. Everyone else who still likes nuts and appreciates them being on the outside. The hummingbird cake was a first for me. It was great. Sweet as cake. The flavor was warm and comforting. The German chocolate was my least favorite and the last one I tasted so a disappointment. I Try very hard to support Black owned businesses especially ones located in the community I grew up in, but I have to be honest and state that Ive been disappointed with cake orders as it appears on at least 2 different occasions the order was incorrect!!! Not good!!! I would looooovve to continue to support and spread the word about the bakery. However, these mishaps will definitely make me say NO MORE!!!! Please get it together, once your reputation is ruined it will be hard to turn that around. Don't let that happen. I can't complain about anything here! The desserts were "smack yo momma good!" Ok not really. If you have any ties to The Dirty South you will especially appreciate the delightful sweets served here. The red velvet was just the right density and was covered by a smooth and creamy cream cheese frosting. I usually only prefer banana pudding made by someone in my family but I have broke down that barrier after trying their strawberry banana pudding. Customer service was good as I was welcomed by smiling, courteous faces. I like the fact that it is on a side street so you can double park if needed. I suggest having your dessert with water as they can be VERY sweet, diabetics beware and ladies apologize to your hips later. Enjoy! read more

Great hospitality... quick service.. but very busy... social distancing practiced during Covid. While on the line.. you know us folk like to about food when we get together.. a few ladies mentioned their banana pudding which i forgot to get. By far the best cakes in New York. It's the only place I go now if I have a celebration coming up. Their staple and hands down the best red velvet cake around. Only thing I can think to compare it to is Cake Man Raven that use to be on Fulton St in Brooklyn a couple years back. $6 slice of cake. About $60 for a 3 layer cake. Mad different flavors. Found this place during the pandemic and decided to visit. They have cleaned out the store front with nothing in the counter tops or inside the display. There were large barriers that covered the front and sides of the cashier. Additionally they have a card reader that requires very minimal touching. The cashier was super nice and upbeat. Note: they only take cash for orders under $10. So I ended up buying 2 pieces of cake (German Chocolate and Carrot Cake). After talking to the cashier about how I discovered Doc's I mentioned that I heard about the pound cake. Boom! He gave me a slice for free. The German chocolate cake was good but I underestimated how much I don't like chocolate lol still ate the whole thing. The carrot cake was absolutely amazing! Lastly, the pound cake was to die for. To be clear, it's more of a angel food cake with hints of lemon and amazing glaze. Just keep that in mind. Will I come back? Heck yes! Will I tell a friend? I'm telling everybody! read more

I'm only able to review on the red velvet cake I had and it was AMAZING! My friends and I visited this establishment on a weekday afternoon. There was a line going down the block but it was not too long and it moved pretty quick. My friends have been here numerous times already and always ordered the banana pudding which they say is really yummy. I asked for a suggestion of what to get since it was my first time here and there are lots of choices to choose from. The man helping us suggested the red velvet which I was hesitate about because I'm not really a red velvet cake person but I'm so glad I went with it because it was so delicious. I'm notoriously tight fisted, and yet I have walked in here and paid $6 for a single slice of cake a number of times since I found this place. Why? Because it's honestly worth it. I once left part of a slice in its container on a counter for a few days. When I came back to it, it was still moist. And that's the magic. Every time I walk in for my yellow cake with chocolate icing, I know I'm in for something delicious. While I've only had the sliced cake, I'd feel comfortable ordering a cake from here also. When you first walk in, the smell is intoxicating and it's pretty cool how you can look straight into their kitchen and see the magic happen. Not too sweet, fluffy and moist and the strawberry filling was exactly what you'd expect. It was really the banana pudding that stole the show for all of us. You know a banana pudding is legit when it passes the flip test, so thick you can turn it upside down and it won't move at all. Oh me gee. Their red velvet is the shizz. It was so moist and the right amount of sweet and this decadent fluffy icing on the top. I ate one slice over the course of 3 days. Yes. Tres! Why, you ask? For me I have random moments of the sweet tooth but I don't always like to over indulge. Sometimes I just need a taste and it was so darn good. I've been meaning to go back. I bought a super expensive high end cake from Betty Bakery and I didn't like it all that much and I kind of regret not getting my B-Day cake from here. I was kinda tipsy and don't remember enjoying the cake but the next day I tasted a piece and it was super dry and not all that great. The fondant had hardened and I had to just chuck it. I had been meaning to come by this place for a long time, so a hankering for cake redirected in on my drive each home. Being overwhelmed by choices, the good cop/bad cop routine (one of the counter ladies was super pushy, the other was super helpful) and a long line will make you choose greedily and move on. We ended up buying red velvet, lemon, and carrot cake (sans the nuts) and a strawberry banana pudding. Paid, tipped ($20) and rushed home to test it all out. Here's the rundown. Red velvet- best in show, moist cake. decent cream cheese icing. Strawberry banana pudding- tasty but was mostly Nilla wafers. Carrot cake- more like a fluffy spice cake with cream cheese icing from the red velvet . Lemon cake- more like yellow cake with super sweet, over lemony, imitation lemon extract flavored icing. Verdict: I may come back for the red velvet, if I get the taste for it again so close to home, but not too sure if I would plan on it. read more

I would not recommend this place to anyone. I called for a wedding cake and spoke with the manger who was unable to provide basic information such as the number of inches in a three tier case. However, the manager was rude enough to tell me I would not find a cheaper cake, (lies) and I need to hurry up and order a cake. When I called back to speak with the owner, the same rude manager had the audacity to ask me why I wanted to speak with the owner and if I knew him personally. I provided my name and number for the owner to call and I have not hear from the owner since. It's been almost a month. No red velvet cake has ever graced my mouth and tongue like the one from DOCD's. It's THE apotheosis of red velvet cakes. The texture, the light whipped frosting, the gold crust on the frosting. It's perfection. When I lived in Fort Greene, I used to frequent Cake Man Raven before he closed his Brooklyn doors. I thought that was the pinnacle. I was wrong. I now live in Bed-Stuy and for the past few years, I devour DOCD red velvet at each party that my neighbors throw. I get so excited when I get invites from them because they always have THE cake.
