    Biscuits & Gravy
    Jack M.

I had breakfast at this place. The place was pretty quiet when I arrived, so finding a table was pretty easy. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and eggs. I asked for the eggs to be scrambled. They cost $13.99 plus tax. You can add hash browns or fries for an additional $2.50. The gravy was quite good. I liked that it came with chunks of breakfast sausage. The gravy was savory and creamy and well seasoned. The biscuits underneath were okay. They were not as fluffy as I would have liked and were a little on the dry side. The scrambled eggs were pretty good but could have used some seasoning. The hospitality was good. The young man running the bar and the floor at the time I visited was friendly and offered good conversation. There's a good amount of inside seating and a good size bar as well. They offer a variety of breakfast items, lunch, and dinner. They offer a full bar, including happy hour.

Our party stopped in while in town for a wedding. Cody, our server, was amazing, well as the food and drinks. I had the Cowboy Cold brew, and the bride had the Purple Haze for drinks. We had a wide variety of meals including the avocado toast, California Sandwich, Wyatt Earp burger, a hash, and a couple smash burgers. Each one was delicious! You cannot go wrong with anything you order. The decor was on point and I sent pics to a friend who is a descendant of Doc Holliday and she thought it was fabulous and will visit if she makes her way to the San Diego area. Definitely recommend this place. 5 stars all around!!

What a cute place! Blue velvet banquettes. Saloon style decor. Trivia! We had the best time doing trivia as a family. And we came in second place I may add. The service was good considering there were two people serving the entire place. I got a super watered down well tequila soda. But hey for $6 or 8 not bad. The salad was surprisingly good. Had a chipotle ranch and I added shrimp. I think I was supposed to get avocado with it but not sure. Fries were solid. The rest of my family got the smash burger and loved it. One got the plain, one got the peppercorn sauce and one added the egg. Every one was happy. We will definitely be back!

We had higher expectations for this place based on their IG page.... Great concept. Cool decorations, music & chill vibes. Service was ok. Waitress didn't really check up on us & seemed like she was avoiding eye contact with her guests.... What we ordered: * Cowboy Chili - Tasted like canned chili & they forgot to bring our biscuit. Eventually they did & the biscuit was very tasty. $11.99 * Smoke Show - Smash Burger w/ pork belly. The pork belly had a freezer burn taste to it. $13.99 * Onion rings - Tasty. However they are a charged as a side. $5.99 * Purple Haze - $12.99 * Strawberry Shortcake Milkshake w/ shot of Frangelico - $24.99

Really cute restaurant just outside of Old Town San Diego. We ordered the Vendetta Ride and Johnny Ringo and updated one order of fries to truffle fries. The Johnny Ringo was very good, as were the regular fries. Truffle fries were good, but a little lackluster in the truffle department. I asked for the Vendetta Ride with the sauce on the side, but it was served with the sauce on the burger. Also, I thought the mushrooms would be sliced mushrooms but instead they were minced up in the sauce which was disappointing. I thought they'd left the mushrooms off at first, and when I asked the server even he had to go check with the kitchen because he didn't see them on the burger. But when he came back he explained that the mushrooms are in the sauce. The dessert drinks looked good, but we were both too full after our meals to try them out this time.

Love the cool and relax vibe of this place. Stopped by for a smart cocktail. Great pour and the bartender was pleasant.

This is a great addition to Old Town. The new saloon look of "Doc Holiday" is absolutely a place he would've loved. It's got that warm, old-school saloon vibe -- lanterns on the tables, wood everywhere, relaxed but lively. You walk in and it just feels easy. No pretending. Just a solid bar with good energy. I ordered the JOHNNY RINGO (fried chicken, super greens coleslaw, hot honey) and it was legit. The chicken was actually crispy, the slaw had a fresh crunch, and the hot honey gave it that sweet heat that makes you keep going back for another bite. Exactly what you want from bar food done right. The SMOKE SHOW 13 is not playing around -- double smash patties, double American cheese, marinated pork belly, onion ring, BBQ. It's stacked, messy, and fully committed. Come hungry. And my cocktail was the Loving Man -- vodka, passionfruit liqueur, lemon, agave. Bright, refreshing, dangerously easy to drink. If you like passionfruit, order it. Immediately. Old Town needed a spot like this. It's fun, it's inviting, and it fits right in. Definitely worth checking out. Five stars.

Great atmosphere and good service. We got here during breakfast and it was not too busy. We tried their burrito and Old town burger and they were good. Salad was not that great. Definitely a good restaurant to try at Old Town.

What used to be a run of the mill taqueria diagonally across from the Old Town Trolley Tour stop is now Doc Holliday's. It's a bar and grill that's named in honor of a cowboy legend from the 1800's. The interior was redesigned to resemble a modern Wild West saloon. The bar was to the left when you walked in. A row of small two top tables was arranged in the middle of the room. The right side was lined with booth style seating. Two workers were staffing the bar when I arrived. A limited menu of five burgers, three sides, three milkshakes, and lobster mac & cheese was being offered during the soft opening period. Two of the burgers contained beef patties. A fried chicken fillet, tempura fried cod, and lobster cake made up the other three "burgers." A side of french fries came with a burger order. I selected the Moby Dick which was the tempura fried cod dressed with super greens coleslaw and caper remulad. I requested the Truffle Parmesan Fries instead of plain fries. The upgrade incurred a one dollar surcharge. I found the truffle and parmesan flavors to be intense on the fries. That was a good thing because some places apply a weak amount of seasoning. The cod fillet was fried nicely and served on a sesame seed wheat bun. Weekend brunch, steaks, and other offerings will eventually be incorporated into the menu after the full grand opening. That date is unknown at this time. For now, I gave a four star rating for Doc Holliday's as the $15 price for the fish sandwich and seasoned fries was a good value.

Got the Smoke Show burger, the chicken, and a root beer float--every single thing was amazing. The pork belly on the burger was the standout: perfectly cooked, rich, and balanced, not overpowering. Everything felt elevated and very well made, not just standard bar food. Huge shoutout to our server Jeff--super helpful, knowledgeable, and genuinely made the experience better. This place absolutely nailed it, and I'll 100% be back.

Had a really great time here celebrating a friends birthday last night. Our server was great and all the food was really tasty. We enjoyed the western vibe for some pre-drinks and food before heading to the rodeo. The Brussel sprouts were a fave amongst the crew!

Literally LOVE this place! I was so impressed. I was randomly in old town and STARVING and walked by it and decided to give it a shot. I honestly wasn't expecting much and holy heck it was SO GOOD! First off the vibe and ambiance is so freakin' cute! But the food is AMAZING. May sandwich was crispy, juicy, so much flavor and just the right texture of breading. The Roasted shredded chicken was literally the most flavorful shredded chicken I ever had it was crazy. And my float was so yummy! I'm sober right now so I was excited to have so many fun options that didn't involve alcohol. However I looked at their cocktail list and it looked so yummy too! I can't wait to indulge once I decide to incorporate alcohol in my life again. Can not recommend this place enough! Oh also my bartender was very sweet and attentive, I wish I caught her name. Definitely give this place a shot! Yum yum yum!

This place was exactly the vibe we were hoping to find. The second we walked in, I loved the vintage feel of the decor. It has that authentic old-school saloon energy that can't be manufactured. A genuine neighborhood watering hole with personality - a little worn in, full of character & packed with stories. One of the best parts of our visit was the bartender, who also happened to be the third-generation owner. He struck that perfect balance of being super friendly & welcoming without being all up in our business. You could tell he genuinely cared about the place & its history. I'm really glad that I found Oculto because it has been one of the highlights of my San Diego trip. First of all, the concept of the seven deadly sins is really cool. The space is absolutely moody, intimate, and thoughtfully designed. It has an atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and enjoy your drink rather than rush through it. And since I don't really drink, I was definitely going slow. And I was alone, but the good part was I found myself just taking it all in instead of reaching for my phone. I started with an espresso martini-style cocktail that was smooth, balanced, and the perfect way to ease into the evening. For my second drink, I asked for the bartender's choice, and it ended up being one of my favorite cocktails I've had in a long time. It featured lychee, strawberry, and cardamom, and was garnished with a beautiful little rose. It was creative, elegant, and every flavor worked together perfectly. The cocktails were outstanding, but what really made the experience stand out was the service. Devin was an excellent bartender and an amazing conversationalist. He was warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely engaging, making me feel welcome from the moment I sat down. He took the time to craft a drink based on flavors I enjoy, and it was clear he cares about creating a great experience, not just serving drinks. If you're looking for a cocktail bar with incredible drinks, a gorgeous atmosphere, and exceptional hospitality, I can't recommend Oculto enough. Full disclosure, I'm a sucker for a themed speakeasy, and Oculto delivered with its Mexican gothic twist. Entering through a confessional booth, confessing your sins before once again giving over to temptation as you sample seven deadly sins-themed libations; oh yeah, this is the themed spectacle that I adore! For those wanting to visit, Oculto is small and reservations are a must. They also have a two drink minimum and the seatings are timed. Everything we ordered was fantastic and I adored the presentation. My only complaint, and the reason for the four stars, is that despite its small size, service was still on the slower side. I get that the bartenders are making complicated craft cocktails, but when you have a two drink minimum AND a time limit for your guests, maybe speed it up a little bit? We would have loved to order another round but sadly ran out of time on our reservation. But everything else about the bar was fantastic, and I will definitely be back for another night of debauchery in the future!

Starlite!! WOW!…read more Okay, Starlite... now I finally understand what all the buzz is about! I've driven past this place more times than I can count, and every time I pass it on the 5, I see a line of people wrapped around the building waiting to get inside. Naturally, I had to find out what all the fuss was about--and let me just say, Starlite is giving "San Diego's cool kid who knows all the best places to be." This has to be one of the most happening spots in San Diego right now, and after experiencing it for myself, I completely understand why. Quick tip before you go: make reservations if you're planning a full night out. You can sometimes walk in early, but reservations let you choose between three distinct areas--and trust me, the ambiance is part of the experience. First, there's The Cave--dark, intimate, and effortlessly sexy. It has that tucked-away vibe that makes you lean in and go, "Okayyy, this is cute!" Perfect for date night or a cozy dinner when you want something more private. Then there's the indoor/outdoor space, which I absolutely loved. Palm trees and greenery create a lush, California-botanical feel that's elevated without trying too hard. And then there's the entry/bar area--lively, social, and very "we came for dinner but somehow stayed for cocktails for three hours." No matter where you sit, you're getting the full Starlite experience. THE FOOD We came to eat--and Starlite delivered. We went as a group, and just a heads up: large parties may be subject to a fee, which is pretty standard. I wouldn't bring a huge group here, but four? Perfect. A friend had already been raving about the burger, so I knew exactly what I wanted. The burger. Period. What I didn't realize? It already comes with fries. So yes... I also ordered scalloped potatoes. My husband got the burger with mac & cheese, and we added Thai carrots to balance things out--or at least pretend we were being responsible. Then the food arrived. And I was like... "Wait... where did these fries come from?" Because these fries? Golden, crispy, perfectly seasoned, and dangerously good. The kind you stop talking for. And the burger? Baby. Medium-well, caramelized onions, melted cheese--everything blended perfectly. But the real star was the garlic sauce. That sauce deserves its own review. If I could bottle it, I'd be writing this from a yacht. It took everything from great to "Ohhh, this is why people come back." The scalloped potatoes were rich, creamy, and hearty. The pepper jack mac & cheese was another standout--creamy, cheesy, with just enough kick and corkscrew noodles holding onto all that goodness. Comfort food, but make it chic. Our friends also ordered the shrimp with cocktail sauce, which they raved about for being fresh, large, and flavorful. The Dijon chicken looked incredible and got rave reviews at the table as well. So yes--we over-ordered. And no, we didn't regret it. THE VIBE Starlite nails the atmosphere. It's stylish without being pretentious, trendy without trying too hard, and intimate without feeling cramped. Even the bathrooms deserve a mention. They have a cool vault-like design, and the women's restroom includes thoughtful touches like mints and feminine products. Because honestly... A place that keeps you fed AND freshened up? I notice that. SERVICE Huge shout-out to Daniella! She was warm, attentive, accommodating, and super knowledgeable about the menu. She guided us through the favorites and made the whole experience feel easy and elevated. Great service really does change everything. FINAL VERDICT Would I come back? Absolutely. Starlite is the kind of place where you dress up a little, bring your favorite people, order way too much food, sip cocktails, and simply enjoy the night. Perfect for date night, girls' night, or a "let's see what the hype is about" dinner. Food? Ambiance? Aesthetic? Service? Vibe? 10/10 from me. San Diego, you were hiding a gem in plain sight... but I'm in on it now. Highly recommend.

The mozzarella sticks in particular were absolutely insane -- easily one of the highlights of the meal. There were still a few service issues, but honestly, they were noticeably less frustrating here than at some of the other properties. Our experience overall was much more enjoyable, and I actually left feeling like I would happily come back. I do think there seems to be a broader service issue across some of the restaurants under the same ownership, which is a shame because the food and atmosphere at these places are clearly there. I don't necessarily think it's an issue with the individual restaurants or servers, but more something that seems to come from the overall management and service structure. That being said, Starlite really stood out to me in the best way. Great food, a fun atmosphere, and overall a genuinely enjoyable experience. And seriously... those mozzarella sticks. SO good.

They walked us to an exact spot on the floor to stand and view the menu in the dark (we used our phone flashlights, but it wasn't easy while carrying our belongings too), and they instructed us not to order at the bar in this colorful but dimly lit tiki lounge. We essentially ordered from staff who took our order in the middle of the floor, then we had to hold our drinks, some that came with additional shot glasses, in full hands, as we were never seated. We did find a barrel to set our drinks on later, but their process and expectations for guests was just really weird and impractical. The theme and decor of the setting was lovely, with moments of a lightning and thunder effect that made the experience more immersive. But we were not impressed by the sticky menus and sticky floor, nor the lack of service and minimal help from staff while there. We made the most of our time at False Idol regardless of their shortcomings. The bombay sling and enigma de muerte were pretty decent in quality and flavor, so it's safe to say the drinks aren't the problem here. And though we probably won't return, it was cool for a one-time experience.

They also have some seats at the bar. This restaurant has gone all in on the space theme, from the hostess greeting to the decor in the restaurant and restroom, and even the menu and tables. Such a fun vibe! This place is known for their cocktails. I forget what we ordered because they all have funny names, but both my friend and I really enjoyed our choices. The food was great too. We ordered the tofu. I think it had a light tempura fry, yummy sauce, and very large portion. The bread is roti with an eggplant and tomato dip. Very good, but not enough dip. I'd still order it again. Probably the only negative was that I felt a bit rushed to leave. We were enjoying our conversation, entrees, and drinks and got checked on quite frequently. Eventually the waiter said, no rush but here's the check. Kind of ruined the vibe. We decided to pass on dessert here and walk to an ice cream shop in the same neighborhood.

The single worst experience I've ever had going out…read more If you're friends with the servers, bartenders, or hosts, you'll probably have a great time. If you're not a regular, be careful, because apparently all it takes is one drunk friend of the staff making up a story to get you kicked out. While visiting San Diego with friends, we came here after hearing so many great things. There was a short wait, which was fine. The four of us were seated at a small standing table, also fine. Behind us were two guys drinking at the standing bar. One of them bumped into my friend and then stroked her arm while apologizing. She was visibly uncomfortable, so I told her to switch places with me. The guy immediately said, "We're gay, so you don't have to worry," then turned to his friend and said, "Now he looks so stupid and embarrassing." I told him, "I don't think it's embarrassing to make sure your friends are comfortable," then turned back around. I didn't argue with him, insult him, or continue the conversation. I thought that was the end of it. A few minutes later, the manager came over and told us we had made comments that made other patrons uncomfortable and asked us to leave. We had already paid for our drinks and were still waiting for them. My friend followed the manager to ask what was going on, and I joined shortly after. The person complaining was, of course, the same guy who had bumped into her. He was clearly drunk and started rambling about how we had made homophobic comments toward him and his friend. This was especially ridiculous considering the friend I switched places with was there with her girlfriend. We calmly explained exactly what happened. The manager did not care. There was no real attempt to hear our side, ask questions, or figure out what actually happened. The decision had clearly already been made. While we were speaking to the manager, the guy who complained was cheerfully talking with one of the bartenders, receiving a to-go meal, and greeting them cheek to cheek. He very obviously appeared to know the staff. So that seems to be how things work here: a drunk regular or friend of the staff can make up whatever story he wants, and management will throw out an entire group of paying customers without even pretending to investigate. They refunded the drinks, which was the bare minimum. The ambience was nice, but that means absolutely nothing when the staff handles customers this poorly. Awful management, blatant favoritism, and easily the worst service I have ever experienced. I would never come back, and I would strongly warn anyone who isn't already friends with the staff to stay away.

What I truly appreciate is how inclusive it is; when they say "all are welcome," they genuinely mean it. You feel like part of the community the moment you step through the door, no matter who you are. The folks working behind the bar are absolute superstars. They're not just great at mixing up a delicious drink, but they're also super friendly and always up for a bit of banter. It's the kind of place where striking up a conversation with someone new at the bar is effortless. There's a constant buzz of friendly chatter and laughter, making it such a wonderful place to just relax and be yourself. And let's talk about value - they truly know how to pour a proper drink, and their prices are incredibly fair. You definitely get a fantastic drink without feeling like you've splurged. It's just an all-around great spot to unwind, meet some cool people, and enjoy a top-notch beverage in a relaxed, friendly setting. Highly recommend giving The Loft a visit!

Situated on 5th Avenue in beautiful Hillcrest, The Loft is a small, but mighty place that is near and dear to my heart for a variety of reasons. From the bartenders, to the patrons, and of course the drinks...this spot is an absolute vibe! Everyone is beyond welcoming and fun here. The space is a great combination of indoor/outdoor. The drinks are strong and well priced, which is not a combination you can find many places these days! They don't serve food, but they are fine if you want to bring your own, which many folks do. We have enjoyed a cocktail and UberEats'd something so we didn't have to leave. Overall, while I am not a San Diego local (yet), I consider The Loft my local spot. Love this place!
