Great choices. I had a flight with The Luna, Rube, Rootstock and Hefty Fee which I enjoyed. I also had the Gimme and Grandpappy which were very tasty. My favorites were Gimme and Rootstock. There is a lot of citrusy goodness in their craft beers. I did not try any food options this time but I will be back to try them out. All in all, a good place to stop, chill out and enjoy craft beer options solo or with a group. I loved the layout and decor. read more

This is definitely one of those "hidden" (surrounded by auto repair shops) gems in OC. We ordered a Cubano and a kimchi Reuben, both were excellent and delicious sandwiches. Definitely looking forward to coming back here again, either for the food or the beer! read more

This is a super fun brewery along a bike path. Lots of people come here while stopping on a bike ride. The lines can be a little long to order but they go fast so don't worry. The Cuban wasn't our favorite (not pictured) but the kimchi Rueben was one of a kind. Even inspired us to go out and buy kimchi the next day. This is a great place to come and have a relaxing time! Bring a picnic blanket or table and you can sit by the bike path if the tables are full. :) read more

Kinda hidden place, we wouldn't have known about it if some of our relatives hadn't told us about it. Went on a Sunday, when a musician was there and it was a really cool set up. Beers were very good, with the Double Nickels being my favorite. Kind of a pale ale, IPA mix, but without the bitterness of a normal IPA. Also had the Toothy (which was decent), the coffee porter (liked this one, had the taste of a carbonated black coffee), and the Great Grandpappy (strong stout, wasn't necessarily my type of stout, but was pretty good). This is a pretty cool brewery, didn't have a lot of time just came in for lunch and a drink but want to come back if I have more time to hang out. Good selection of beers, I liked their IPA/pale ales and kimchi quesadilla was really good. They have a cool lounge area in the back with comfy furniture. Staff is friendly and it's nicely decorated. Only downside or this place is it's kinda off to it's own in a business Park(so are most breweries these days). When we think of good beer and friendly service. We always think of Docent. They have the best beer in Cali! Beer tenders are friendly and social. However, we came in today to have some beers. We had plenty of flights. We decided to eat. I ordered the Docent bowl and the hubby had the Cubano sammy. The Docent bowl has pork belly, the pork belly was more like pork jerky! I ate most of what was surrounded by the pork jerky. My hubby had the Cubano sammy and was drastically smothered in horseradish spread. Overpowered the "supposed cubano sandwich. Both dishes were sadly unacceptable. We have ordered these items in the past many times, never have they been so awful. I am disappointed I spoke with Casey, the manager and all he said was, "sorry". Again disappointed. We have been coming here since 2017. The food has gone downhill. This will be the last time I have food at Docent. Disappointed beer enthusiast. read more

Found this place on Yelp and it was a delightful surprise! It's hard to find but they have some tall flags in the ground, go down that alley and it's on the end. I got the Cubano and a half beer. I'm a slow drinker so I appreciated the different sizes. You order at the register and they give you the beer there and a buzzer if you get food. You then go around the corner and get your food. We go for a beer (or 3) most Thursdays. We move around and Docent was next on the list. A few had been there before and said the beer is tasty so I was stoked to check it out. My buddy called while I was on my way and asked if he should grab me a beer. I asked if it was crowded (was about 3:45 when he got there) he said it wasn't and I told him I'd grab my own. When I got there only 2 outside tables were taken, besides the one he grabbed, and I only saw 3 people at the bar inside. When I waved and said I was grabbing g beer he yelled "good luck". I walked over and he said they were not so quick on the service, but there were only a few people so I thought he was just being a dick. Well he wasn't. 3 people were behind the bar; 2 filling cans and one just wiping down where 3 people left. I was pretty sure I made eye contact with BOTH of the people filling cans, but they didn't say anything so I assumed that was their job. The guy behind the bar walked right past me with 2 empty glasses, then walked past me again to the 2 guys finishing their beers, took 2 empties from them, rinsed the glasses then went back to check on them and asked if they were done. Only after they said they were he asked if he could get me something...? It is not like I was hiding in the corner. I was right up against the bar. I understand that they probably do pretty good business but you never know who is there to get a beer. It could be just another yahoo but don't you want them to come back? It could be a potential client with a few bars that wants to sell your beer, or the next guy who wants to invest, buy your place for 10x eval, etc. Its all about the little things and service is a big deal. Training your employees is not just showing them how to pour a beer or run the credit card machine. Right when you see a new person walk in, make eye contact, toss them a coaster even if you are helping someone else, let them know you see them and that you'll be right with them. It's basic bar owner/server/tender 101... You'll have your groupies, friends, neighbors for a few more years, but as soon as someone opens up close with better service - it'll be "aw man, do you remember when Docent first opened? It was the best. What happened?" The 3 stars was for Pillow Fight. A good, fruity, classic IPA. By itself it would have been 5 stars. read more

Docent - it's been a wonderful 5 years, and you've been truly kind to me and my friends in the time I've spent in Orange County. All of that being said, I will never bring my business to your establishment again. I also know you don't need it - you're doing just fine. It's not ok to scream and shout at my friends or my family. I don't think I've ever been that embarrassed in my entire life, and I realized that it wasn't at my group - it was at your service. Don't come here. Fun local brewery in an industrial part of town. One star deducted for chefs refusal to make ANY substitutions or changes (especially when alot of the menu has HOT / SPICY items). As a result, our group mostly ordered beer which was good but like most brew pubs -- no lager available. I like the fact it's very dog friendly and they have couches for the humans. A relative, whom I trust completely suggested that I go to Docent Brewing and Public House...despite it's kind of remote location in SJC...back behind the Coach House! I found it...looks like any other mixed-use office/light industrial joint! But once inside all that "sameness" is stripped away! The long bar with in ground stools, the many taps for dispensing world-class brews and a warm and comfy looking "Family Room"!!! The mostly ladies behind the bar are well versed in EVERYTHING Docent Brewing! I was COLD so I wanted to be warmed from the inside! I got a full glass of Docent Grandpappy Imperial Stout...the dark, thick brew possessed a plethora of warm notes of mocha, caramel, straw and vanilla! I saw they had also the 3 year bourbon barrel aged Great Grandpappy...13.1 ABV!!! AWESOMENESS!!! I'm a Sommelier by trade so I am well involved in the use of my olfactory senses! This ginormous brew smelled of a single lot bourbon, raw honey, creamy chocolate, barrel staves and some lithe floral notes! The mouth is a perfect party for your tastebuds...it goes down smooth and warm! I equated it to the young lady that served me of a wonderful 30-year Tawny Port! This place is a little hidden gym. It's located in a very industrial area and I would have never found this place if it wasn't for my favorite app, Yelp! There's a large parking area in both the front and back entrance. The place was a little chilly so maybe bring a jacket if you run cold. The beer selection was fabulous! I had this delicious scotch ale that had hints of vanilla, caramel, plum and tart cherry, 7.5% and smooth and tasty! The menu: they had many selections of sandwiches and little pizza rolls. I got the Hero and honestly it was a bit to strong with all the sauces they had on it. The French roll they used for the bread was perfectly toasted and had a good flavor. We also had the roll that had pepperoni, cheese and jalapeños, it was good only only $3. I don't live in the area but I would certainly come back and try another sandwich and grab some beer. I echo the sentiments of E.B. -- beer and food is great, and I LOVE that it is a dog friendly environment. There were way too many kids running around the day we were there. A kid's soccer team (about 12-15) came in with some parents. The kids were running wild on the game side, playing fooz ball, Jenga, and generally just squealing like kids do. The noise was insane -- they have concrete floors and the place echos. I'm okay with kids coming and don't mind them playing the games, but they were running around and the place was crowded, so people had to dodge the kids so they wouldn't spill their beer. This place was a great pit stop while en route to San Diego. My boyfriend and I really wanted some good brews and a snack while sitting in traffic and Docent Brewing popped up on Yelp! This place is in the cut in a very industrial area. I really liked the vibes of this place as soon as I walked in. There's lounge seats to the left, the good stuff (beer and food) straight ahead, and more seats and games to the right. We both ordered a flight with my choices being Grandpappy, Burner, Jewels, and The Rube. I normally don't care for stouts but the Grandpappy had to be the best one I've ever had, it also helps that the alcohol content is around 9-10% ;). We ended up loving our flights that we ordered a guava infused beer, more of The Rube (me and my man's favorite) and Peel Top (based off our neighbor's recommendation). We also made friends with everyone working there which made it a fun time. All the guys were so nice, especially Taylor. He ended up telling us about the to go canisters and was very helpful. We ended up liking the Peel Top so much that we took a quart canister of it to go - $11. On top of the great brew and friendly service, we were extremely happy that they have food options. Usually, breweries don't have food at all so we were very thankful. I ordered the kimchi quesadilla and my boyfriend ordered The Cubano. The kimchi quesadilla was delicious but messy. The kimchi juice was spilling everywhere so I recommend they drain their kimchi before using it. My boyfriend LOVED his sandwich and home made kettle chips. I normally don't eat pork so I can't attest to how yummy it was but I tried some of the bread and kettle chips and that alone was great. After we filled our bellies, we took our additional beers and enjoyed playing foosball. We really had a great time. I highly recommend this brewery! read more
