I'm actually surprised there aren't more places in DC that work to empower lives of veterans and veteran families (if there are, PM me and let me know where!). So that gives it a bit bonus in my books. I had kind of a mixed experience here, though. I came for lunch with a friend and we were both extremely underwhelmed with our sandwiches (which, it is important to note, are all pre-made). The menu listed a few items that were not available (switched out for different seasonal items, but I feel that should be reflected with an updated menu). The sandwich I wanted contained an ingredient I am allergic to, and when I asked about getting the sandwich without that ingredient they told me "not possible" since they are all pre-made. When a pre-made lunch sandwich costs $10+, you'd expect it to be exceptional...and the one I settled on (The Captain) was pretty meh. HOWEVER, the sweet baked goods are where they shine here. The cookies are worth the trip alone and I dare say the chocolate chip cookies are some of the best in DC. Bright, inviting cafe that employs, trains, and benefits veterans and military families. My first impression was the heavenly smell when I walked in and I was immediately happy to be there. The space is well-lit, warm, and attractive, especially with the cheerful Christmas tree up right now. Service is efficient; it probably took me longer to select my tasty treats than it took to prepare my order. There's a high chair available but because the tables were fairly close together I had to invade the space of the neighboring table. However, it's a pleasant, laidback crowd so still felt kid friendly. Next time if I go with kids I'll sit at the booths for more room. Food was delicious: I loved the green tomato in the breakfast sandwich. The Christmas morning bread with walnuts, cranberries, and chocolate chips was not overly sweet. Orange chocolate scone - didn't love the orange bits but the outside was super crunchy and the inside chewy Croissant tart - croissant was super buttery. I wish I had more stars for the business. I had them cater an event for a group of military vets and their families, and everything about the food was SO good! This place is really cute and purposeful. Its red, white, and blue themes proclaim patriotism and its mission is to provide returning veterans with civilian opportunities to help them transition back to civilian life. It has unique decorative touches throughout the bakery, from a ceiling decoration made entirely of suspended dog tags, to an old-school typewriter that looks it it'd come right out of a military movie. There's a free coffee with Yelp check-in. My friends got the egg and cheese croissant sandwiches, which were small but looked really scrumptious. I got a slice of yummy apple bundt cake. Though my friend and I didn't get a chance to sit at the Obama & Biden booth, we enjoyed hanging out at this cute cafe with ample space and lighting, and delicious sandwiches and pastries! There were so much goodies through the glass at the counter, it was difficult deciding what to eat! They even have little treats to gift to friends and family. I took home the turkey and cranberry sandwich, as well as some morning buns (one pear ginger flavor) and a chocolate zucchini bar. The sandwich tasted like thanksgiving in my mouth! The turkey meat was not too dry and quality. The pastries were all very good. Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan of their truffle cake pops and coconut custard pie. I've been wanting to try this place for a long time, and a anniversary finally gave me a reason to. We got a slice of the cherry cake and a couple cookies to go. I wasn't crazy about the cherry cake--it didn't have a strong cherry flavor and the cake itself was very dense. But those snickerdoodles... my gosh. I could eat a dozen of those in one sitting. Slightly crunchy edges, extremely soft in the middle, and just the right amount of sugar. I will definitely be coming back for those every time I'm in Georgetown. read more

We tracked this place down based on other yelp reviews and we pleasantly surprised. Definitely worth straying from the main Georgetown strip. Highly recommend! A simple bakery with an exceptional sausage egg and cheese biscuit. The biscuit was buttery and flavoured with thyme which made it a little different. A veteran based cafe/bakery had me here. Plus my friend said they had great food and coffee. After our bike ride into DC from Vienna I need a bite to eat and caffeine to keep me going. I ordered the croissant sandwich with eggs and bacon, a medium size coffee and 2 macaroons. The sandwich was good but very greasy. The coffee was strong and delicious. Five star mainly for what this place stands for and how cute it is. This place is a bakery run by military vets! Food and coffee may be slightly over priced but I enjoyed the experience. I think checking in on yelp gives you free iced coffee, although I don't see it on Yelp anymore. (The cashier told me it still applies though). I liked the egg and cheese with my hazelnut flavored coffee. This place is located right next to the canal and on a busy street, near the Georgetown Waterfront, so plenty to do. The inside has a lot of space to sit and do work, or just read a book. I got a couch type seat to read my book and it was so peaceful. They bring the coffee and food right at to you. Dropped in here on a beautiful stroll around Georgetown. Definitely would recommend walking around the neighborhood to take in the shops and homes that line the streets. Craving something sweet during a walk around Georgetown led us to this bakery. What a find! The young woman at counter was super friendly, helpful and patient. She explained in details the names and descriptions of the baked goods. We split a carrot cake and oatmeal raisin cookie among the three of us. Hubby had a drip coffee and my oldest and I split an iced coffee. The carrot cake was moist, flavorful, and rich without being overly sweet like many I've tasted. The frosting was creamy and layered in between and on top. The cookie was chewy and soft on inside and crispy on outside, as a good cookie should be. We have been wanting to come here for quite a while now and we finally made it! We live about 30 min from DC but spend time there frequently for dinner and sight seeing. This was the cutest place! It is decorated so patriotically and is so quaint and welcoming. The main reason we wanted to visit is because they are a nut free bakery. My son has a severe peanut and tree nut allergy and it is rare to find a bakery that would be safe for him to eat from as cross-contamination is usually an issue at all other bakeries. He was beyond excited to actually be able to choose a dessert at a bakery! Priceless to us!! I was surprised to see that they also offer sandwiches and bags of chips for a lunch/dinner. We got a pulled pork sandwich, a buffalo chicken sandwich and a ham and Gruyere a croissant. They were able to heat up the ham and cheese croissant but the other two sandwiches were served cold. They were still surprisingly good even when eaten cold. The pulled pork had a pickled onion slaw on it that I really enjoyed. My son had the ham and cheese and kept oohing and ahhing over it. My husband got a lemonade which he really liked and they give you one free refill which is very nice. They also have self-serve lemon water in the dining area. We got very tired from all the walking and went into this cozy cafe. We learned what a great mission the company is trying to accomplish - educating and helping veterans and families of veterans.
