What's not to love about this hidden gem, on Grace St. The team is warm and welcoming and the food is tasty. Best of all this small business has a mission to train and support veterans. The small cafe has about 8 tables and is decked out in red, white and blue. The cafe menu has creative sandwiches, quiche and be sure to try out the cookies, cupcakes and cakes. Cute bakery with a meaningful mission, tucked out of the way near the waterfront in Georgetown. Peaceful vibe with an underlying value I very much appreciate: a work-study program combining education and experience necessary for veterans to succeed as civilians. All proceeds support their veteran programs.Their hashtag? #BakingADifference (yay!). You can even shop online and send treats to loved ones while benefitting veterans. I'd actually say the provisions are four stars, but the personable service, great mission, reasonable prices, and out-of-the-way location kick it to five stars. It took me awhile to get off the beaten track in Georgetown to find them, but now I'll be a regular - at least as much as my waistline allows. My absolute favorite of their menu? I'm a big biscotti fan (I used to bake my own at the holidays), and their chocolate biscotti with dried cherries will be gifted frequently to friends this holiday season. And myself! They're the perfect combination of crunch, complementary flavors, and they're sweet without being cloying. I've also tried a variety of their cookies. While the chocolate chip and snickerdoodles have great flavor, they weren't my preferred texture; they're thick and cake-like, and I like my cookies with some snap to them. A recent special was lavender shortbread. Shortbread is, of course, the most delicious and efficient way to convey as much sugar and butter to your mouth with the least flour needed to hold it together, and lavender is one of my absolute favorite scents and flavors. The shortbread was pretty, cut into small, delicately pale squares where you could see the lavender buds. Unfortunately, I found the lavender a bit overwhelming -- perhaps not adequately balanced by vanilla? -- and a few minutes later I found myself with an unexpected case of lavender-flavored... burps. (Excuse me.) There are worse things, certainly. :) Their drip coffee has always been simple, fresh, and tasty, which is my preference with baked goods. The "real food" menu includes breakfast sandwiches (served on one of their very good croissants, biscuit, or challah bun) - take special note that the sausage is not only delicious, but also from veteran-owned Hudson Heritage Farm. Also take note that their breakfast pastries (savory scones, as well as sweet options, muffins, coffee cakes, and delightful breads) are half price after 4:00pm. When I allow myself to indulge in their cakes, pies, and sandwiches, I'll certainly post an update - but if my companions' raves are any indication, they're all good-to-great as well. Clean, well-lit atmosphere, with free, speedy wifi. Interesting variety of patrons whenever I've been there - distinguished men in suits sitting alongside students, yoga-pant moms, and quiet hipsters. read more

What a cozy bakery in the heart of Georgetown! Literally baking for a good cause, I couldn't have been happier with the choice to come here thanks to the recommendation of a friend! Dog Tag Bakery is one of the coolest concepts ever, and I can really get behind a bakery with a cause. The bakery is a non-profit that helps veterans! What an awesome idea! So aside from the fact that this bakery has a great cause, it is also reasonably priced and has a great selection of non-boring desserts. I came with two friends this week, and I ordered a delicious and cutely displayed Key Lime Mousse ($3.03). Served in a Mason jar, it had a graham cracker bottom with lime Mousse. It was topped with some kind of ricotta(?) topping. The key lime Mousse was very good. I was also eyeing up a passion fruit tart and red velvet cake, which I want to try in future visits! Not a "hi, hello, welcome" etc. maybe after that moment you could have let us know our mask was half an inch below your standard *eye roll* Let me tell you it wasn't pleasing to be immediately yelled at over something that wasn't intentional. Dog Tag Bakery has been on my list ever since they opened up, and I was ecstatic to finally check them out! This cute bakery provides a work-study program that offers education and experience for disabled veterans, so that the experience & the training they receive can help them obtain jobs post duty. The menu offers breakfast items (egg & cheese croissant sandwiches, bagels, biscuits, fruit cup, oatmeal with fruit, etc.), pastries (scones, brioche, muffins, and cinnamon buns), lunch options (salads, soups, and sandwiches), mini breads, and various desserts (whoopie pies, cheesecakes, apple pies, etc.). Everything in the bakery case looked enticing, but I ended up trying their Curried Chicken Salad on Challah Knot (oven-roasted chicken tossed with celery, parsley, curry powder, Greek yogurt, and mayo, all nestled in a sesame seed challah bun; this also came with a side of sea salt kettle chips; I thought the chicken itself was quite bland/dry, but definitely 'healthy' tasting; there were huge chunks of chicken, and the sesame challah was actually quite good!); 2 'TeaClairs' (traditional eclairs filled with tea-infused custard; they also change their fillings frequently - I tried the Creme Caramel Rooibos and the Matcha TeaClair - these were yummy, as they were not overly sweet; there wasn't an overwhelming amount of custard filling inside, and I appreciated that they were mini-sized!); a Cranberry Mini Quick Bread (or a mini 'loaf' - this was a mini vanilla cake with a generous top layer of cranberry and raspberry compote - one of my favorites!!! The vanilla cake was very moist, and I loved the topping of the berry compote!); and, a Chocolate Chip Mint (two chocolate chip cookies with a light mint cream sandwiched in between; the cookies were nice and crunchy, and the mint cream was yummy and delicious!). I loved the fact that the sweets were not overly decadent and sugary, and you can really taste the love that is put in each baked batch. I even saw some baked treats for pups, so I am definitely going to check those out the next time I come! There are plenty of seats inside, and I saw people doing some work, catching up with friends, and/or getting their meals to-go. Dog Tag Bakery is such a quaint little place that is truly "baking a difference" for Veterans in a huge way. Their leaders and staff are passionate and caring and it shows in their work. The lavender shortbread is buttery and soft and goes great with an iced coffee or Horchata latte. I also loved the yogurt parfait with homemade granola and turkey sandwich with the cranberry mayo. If you're parking in the Georgetown area it can be challenging but well with getting to this bakery for breakfast, lunch or a treat. This is a nut free place too. This is a cafe for humans, not dogs. Dog tags meaning army tags. They offer a really amazing program for vets to get real world experience and most of the servers are part of it. Such a genius idea. It's tucked away on a side street in georgetown, but that just makes it better. It opens right at 8am, and there will often be people waiting to get in. Don't be deterred though, they move people through the the line quickly. The inside is all red, white, and blue to go alongside the veteran theme. There's a dog tag chandelier too, which is really unique. They have a variety of different breakfast items, and you can get them on any kind of bread. I ordered the bacon egg and cheese on a croissant. Delicious. I'm not a coffee drinker, but they were quick to suggest a chocolate milk (aka mocha and milk) which was really quite tasty. I've been here since they opened up last year I believe. I absolutely loved ordering their bacon egg and cheese in the morning on days I felt the craving. Unfortunately they did away with the bagels and you now have two options: crossaint or biscuit. Being a bakery place I did not expect getting a burned crossaint when I returned to my office. This is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. I will post a pic of how dark brown the crossaint was for reference. How does one think it's acceptable to give to a customer??! I didn't go back since I was busy at work so I lost a few bucks and had a terrible lunch. This place won't last if they keep this up. read more

Visited Dog Tag Bakery for a fundraising event supporting our veterans. I wish I had taken pictures. It is a great place, with cool decorations (hint -- there are some dog tags involved...), a friendly staff, a wonderful purpose, great coffee, and yummy treats. They not only represent our veterans but they also help by offering small business and bakery experience for those interested in entering the workforce in those areas. I started to use the Bookmark feature of Yelp and had Dog Tag Bakery on it for a couple of weeks because I wanted to support cool, local places. From what I understand, the bakery was founded on the belief that no veteran who wants to work should be unemployed. When I finally decided to take a day off last Friday, I also made the decision to come to Georgetown to try this bakery and get some retail therapy. The bakery is kind of tucked away on Grace St. and about 1-2 blocks away from M St., but that's what I love about it. Upon walking up to the entrance, automatic doors slide open, and you immediately see a pristine storefront inside with its crisp white walls and cabinetry and well-lit display cases. Off to the one side of the store is a small stage with a dog tag chandelier and some umbrellas for sale. On the other side are two booths that hold about four adults each and a nook to put the finishing touches on your drinks and grab some napkins. Near the registers are t-shirts, cookbooks, and dog treats for sale as well as biscotti and cookies. There is a drink menu written in chalk with a variety of coffees and teas and in three sizes. I opted for the small green chai latte ($3.75). The cashier asked if I wanted it in a to go cup which I thought was nice since I also asked for a ham, cheddar and chive scone ($3.85) to stay. I really do think that was nice. I would hate to not be able to finish the drink and have to waste two cups. I also decided to pick up a pre-packaged brownie ($2.75). So, it took a few minutes to get everything fixed up. The scone needed some warming and the drink needed to be prepared. Meanwhile, I was debating whether I wanted to eat the brownie at 9 am. When I got my scone less than a minute later, I chose a seat at one of the 10 or so two seat tables and faced the registers. A steady stream of customers came through and I noticed people who worked upstairs coming down and helping themselves to coffee and chatting with staff. My drink was finished a few minutes later. The scone was so so and I though the latte was ok; it was too watery for me. However, the stand out is the brownie. Wow! I didn't think it would be that great but I decided to give it a try and I am glad I did. It's the perfect brownie with four edges of a slightly crunchy exterior and a perfectly moist, decadent interior. It was easily the best thing I enjoyed that morning. As for service, the cashier came by to grab people's plates and silverware when they were done. When I was done, I walked my stuff up since I didn't want to be rude and leave it on the table and didn't see a proper place for returning used silverware and plates at the nook. He told me I didn't need to do that and that I could leave it at my table and they'd come by and get it, but to me it's like leaving a mess at someone's nice house. Not cool. I was amazed to see a bunch of people on their laptops so I am assuming there is free wifi. One guy kept going up to buy more food and drinks for himself. Another tucked himself into a corner. I'd estimate about ten two seater tables, two booths that seat four people, and two three seater tables. Service is good, and I think the prices are pretty reasonable. Overall, they don't have a huge selection of stuff but I enjoyed the service and found the cleanliness, lighting, and ambiance very welcoming. Moreover, it wasn't crowded and chaotic like another neighbor.... Anyway, please check this out and support our veterans! read more

4.5 stars This has got to be one of the most amazing cafés in the city. Sweets are one thing, but sweets for a good cause? Count me in! The mission of the bakery is to support veterans and their families, and to help them to transition into civilian life. I can't think of a more worthy cause to support. Tucked away on a little side street in Georgetown is the Dog Tag Bakery. The name alone was enough to take me off of my predefined path and take a look. The staff are genuinely friendly and kind. And the baked goods... Three words: Truffle cake pops. OMG!! So fudgy and rich and delicious. And they were decorated so beautifully. The price was equally as sweet: Two for less than $2.00. Yes sir! (One nitpicky thing: I wasn't expecting the coconut inside the chocolate cake pop. Maybe they should have a little note indicating that there is coconut inside, or rename it a chocolate coconut cake pop, to warn anyone that may have an allergy). Aside from standard bakery stuff like pastries and cookies (I was SO hoping for a snickerdoodle, but they didn't appear to have any that day), they also had a lot of savory food items. Mushroom and barley was the soup of the day (and suddenly I wished that I hadn't eaten so much at afternoon tea just an hour before). The deli sandwiches were picture perfect: piled high with meat and crisp, fresh vegetables. Calling this place a mere bakery just doesn't do it justice. The place is so bright and warm and cozy. I initially planned to take my sweets and run, but the atmosphere was so inviting that I tossed a few more coins in the meter and came back to enjoy a cup of tea, soak up the good vibes and hang out with a good book. I had a piping hot cup of THE BEST loose leaf cinnamon apple tea I've ever had (and I don't even like fruit tea!). And with temps hovering below freezing that day, it was just what the doctor ordered. This is a cozy and inviting addition to an otherwise snooty and pretentious neighborhood. I'm so happy to see it thriving and doing well and I wish the Dog Tag Bakery many more years of progress and success. read more

This is one of those times that I need a halfway point between Meh and A-OK. Because the concept is really nice. Dog Tags ... not the woofy kind... but the metal...I served my country kind. It's a nice concept. Too bad the baked goods (mediocre)...well at least the two I tried... Maybe the cookies rate higher... And the coffee.. No effing way.... Don't match the decor (pretty nifty and in line with the concept) and the intent. The coffee was just dire. I didn't even bother taking a photo. Let's say McDonalds could do better with the attempt at an espresso drink. Water dripping everywhere from machine, "barista" noo... I can't call them a barista. Nope. Obviously with no knowledge of how to even USE the equipment much less make something suitable for consumption with it. The absolutely best thing... Lots of space to work and study. Clean surroundings. It would be lovely if their offerings matched the quality of the concept. read more

Both sandwiches were on wonderful breads. Mom and I also enjoyed the soups of the day. Hungarian Mushroom and White Bean escarole (vegan) For sweets we sampled the pear and ginger tart, lavender shortbread, gingersnap, chocolate chip cookie, brownie and citrus bundt cake. Could you tell it was hard to decide? Not a bad choice in the bunch depending on your bakery preference. They also had adorable samples of their pumpkin pie. It was as good as Mom's. I hate when desserts are overly sweet. These were all well balanced. I also saw a note on the wall that they are a nut free bakery so that is helpful to those with nut allergies. I've tried very hard to like this place. It was recommended to us by a friend because they liked it and it's a veteran friendly business. The mission is great but the food is average or straight up not good. I've had the breakfast sandwich and my husband has tried the carrot cake and croissant. None of the above was very good though the scone around the breakfast sandwich was alright, everything in between was extremely meh. Unfortunately, service has never been good. We've been here three times (our friend insisted it was worth giving another shot) and never had a good experience. Third time was not a charm and we will not be returning. read more

There's no written menu, but all the available food is laid out in the display case at the counter. I got The General sandwich -- barbecue chicken with cabbage slaw on a sesame challah bun. It was pre-made rather than made to order, but the it super tasty nonetheless (nothing like what's in a Starbucks display case). I do wish the sammie could have been heated up but it was surprisingly good cold, so no complaints. The workers are super friendly and you can't beat the mission of this place.
