I was not going to write a review but my experience there just hasn't sat well with me. I went in a couple days ago with my kids because I am looking at switching my dogs to a raw food diet. This place came highly recommended. We walked in the door and I was looking in a fridge. There was a dog in there with someone with a service dog harness on. My kids took a couple steps towards the dog (still about 6 feet away). The dog started barking and lunging at my kids. He was on a leash thank goodness. I yelled at my kids to come to me and yes when we got in the car I reiterated to them the important of not approaching random dogs and asking before trying to pet. I walked through the store to see what they had as I had never been there before. We walked back towards the front and I looked through other coolers they had. Making sure my kids stood by the front door as I did this. The dog started barking and freaking out again. I felt so uncomfortable and honestly worried about my kids safety that we just left. Never once did someone ask if they could help me, ask what I was looking for, maybe come up and apologize for the dog going nuts. It was just a bad experience. Let me end by saying I get every service dog has a different job and maybe protecting his owner is what his job is. But to react that aggressively and whoever was handling him sounded like they were having a hard time getting him to stop. That dog shouldn't be brought out in public. Seeing other customers walk in the dog should have been put in the back or taken out to the car or something. read more

Just wanted to stop by a dog-friendly place on a Saturday afternoon to pick up some toys for our french bulldog puppy and had the best experience with the staff and other dog owners. Our pup Dior even made new friends with other dogs while we were shopping for new toys and the staff helped us with recommending healthy chews/treats. They also gave us a mini tour of where everything was in the store. We also appreciate the military discount on top of that. Will definitely be back again! read more

I'm a total dog mom. It's just me and my boy Jasper and I love to spoil him. When we moved to the Oceanfront I was looking for a more convenient alternative to Care-a-lot for his food. His old food was discontinued so there I was just staring at all the dog food feeling totally overwhelmed. The staff here is just phenomenal. They helped me pick the perfect food for my pup based on his activity level, breed and dietary concerns. I have a friend's dog who visits frequently with a chicken allergy, so I wanted to also choose a food that wouldn't cause a reaction if she gets sneaky (the dog, not the friend). I was absolutely blown away by their knowledge. They remember their customers, the owner is just great! She is always keeping up with the news and trends in the pet food industry. They carry a wide variety of high quality food and will even do special orders when possible. I am so lucky to have this little shop so close to where I live, but even if I move it is worth the drive to continue to support such a special business. read more

*Update 2/12/18 Still love this place. Still the best around. Got a free bag of $50 dog food a couple months ago due to their reward program. I still refuse to shop anywhere else. Can't recommend it enough.* This place is the best. I discovered it by accident, when my regular pet store kept running out of 30lb bags of dog food. They charge $5-8 less per bag of Taste of the Wild, they keep track in the computer of what you buy so once you buy a certain amount you save money (I always lose the frequent buyer paperwork everywhere), they give you $2 off with every receipt and will even accept it if it's expired, and they just have the best customer service. I have a 9 month old baby, so getting anywhere to buy dog food is such a hassle, but there is always someone there to help me carry the big bag to my car without me EVER having to ask. I won't shop anywhere else. read more

The Pros: Only place close to the Beach you can find upscale good brands of dog food, including Orijen which Petco and Petsmart don't carry. 2. Among those brands they have an excellent variety of flavors. The cons: 1. They made me put my dog on a leash. She's a quiet well trained dog that just follows me around. She walks off leash and I've never had a problem at a mom and pop pet supply store with her being off leash. Seems overly cautious to me to make me put her on a leash. 2. The other cons are that the lady helping me at the counter lacks customer service skills. She was super rude and told me the name on my license didn't match the name on my credit card. Of course it did. But it's not what she said that bothered me, she said it with disdain. I felt like I was wasting her time as a customer and she had better things to do. 3. Outside, the store is a crappy converted gas station. It doesn't look inviting. It looks like a bait and tackle shop that sells dog food. Inside its organized, yes, but again... It's so crowded with stuff and so piece meal it looks like a well stocked closet rather than a store. 4. The prices are high but not for what you're buying. read more

Three weeks ago, I made a huge life decision. It was the type of life decision that you'd have to be Elle Woods in Legally Blonde to really appreciate. If you love your dog like Elle loved Bruiser, you'd get it. It was a really big deal for me, but here's what I decided (I'll save you my long-winded blabber): I decided to make my dog's food. 100% from scratch. With love. Even if it took up Happy Hour for forever and eternity, I decided that my 70-pound, seven-month-old Akita Americano deserved for me to make a sacrifice. I've fed that dog everything. I've changed her diet at least four times. I've mixed foods. I've tried Blue Buffalo. I've tried Nutro. I've tried everything. I spend (bare minimum) two hundred dollars a month just to feed my Penelope. Dog food. I spend two hundred dollars a month to give my dog the finest dog food brands available at Petsmart. But, honestly, a month ago ... I noticed something. I noticed something that broke my heart. My big, beautiful beast of a dog had hair falling out around her legs. At seven months old, my thick-furred, Opal-colored baby was balding. What could I do? Sure, the obvious thought is to take her to a veterinarian. But what could I, personally, do? So, I took to the skies (Google, duh) and started reading about making human food for dogs. I had an epiphany. What did King Henry VIII feed his dog? Kibbles and Bits? Hell no. He fed it duck, deer, vegetables, and --probably-- some pretty questionable berries. And, that was the moment I realized that I was going to be a better mom to her. I would only feed her what I, MYSELF, would get down on my hands and knees and eat. After a lot of Yelp searching, I came upon this store. With gusto, I headed over there. In search of help. The owner was so warm and welcoming. So incredibly kind. She spent thirty minutes just helping me come up with the perfect diet for Penelope. She even gave me a giant container of duck. Yes, DUCK. Duck is a home-cooked dog food makers dream. You literally DREAM of feeding your dog duck. And she had it. Fresh. Right there in her freezer. She handed me the duck and told her exactly how to prepare it with her usual chicken, quinoa, zucchini, squash, green beans, apples, and carrots. She even gave me a cookie for Penelope that was 100% organic, GMO-free, and had been prepared earlier in the day. Also, when I told her that Penelope was losing fur, she recommended a new wash. And GUESS WHAT?!!! It worked! Her fur is whiter than ever and so shiny, like a pearl. All thanks to this wonderful, amazing woman who has the same exact belief system as I do now .... That you should only feed your dog the perfect food that you feed yourself. What a wonderful woman. I will drive out of my way to continue to buy fresh duck for as long as Penelope is with me. Doggstuff is a good place to find high quality natural treats and food that are hard to come by otherwise. However, I got frustrated with them because they never got in orders of the (very expensive) frozen raw food when they said they would. I ended up stopping shopping there because I would run out of food for my dog and they would not have the order they promized to get in (I have long since been making my own raw food for my dog). I also do not recommend their dog training services. They use outdated negative reinforcement methods, and didn't seem to be confident in what they were doing. I brought in my unsocialized, timid rescue dog to be introduced to other dogs in a controlled environment and the "therapy dog" they brought out started furiously barking at my dog. They said it must have been her tags jingling and sold me a tag pocket for her dog collar. Ha. read more

If you're looking for natural or organic foods for you dog, this is the place to go! Cheryl is an expert on dogs and does extensive research on her products. I've heard her talking to various vendors and if their products are poor quality, she make no bones about it (sorry, I couldn't resist! :-) ) She will tell them in no uncertain terms and will stop dealing with them. Cheryl is a true animal advocate and it shows. Her store is packed to the brim, but I can appreciate her diversity of choices and brands. I make a special trip to her store whenever I need to stock up on "Made in the U.S.A." dog treats. Her prices are in line with products that you can buy online, without the assurance that you're buying a top quality product. I highly recommend Doggstuff. read more

I have always looked up to the owner as an animal welfare advocate. She stays on top of the very best and worse in dog foods and supplements. She only carries what she feels is human quality and good processing practices. My favorite trainer respects she training so therefore so do I. All the folks there are interested in helping the homeless animals and the plight of those with no voice. I whole heartedly recommend them. read more

I went in the store for the first time yesterday and went back again today. It has a great selection of raw food. I typically buy online for my raw. I'm going to start buying raw frozen food for my dogs here instead. Owner is very helpful. Had a good conversation with her. Staff is polite. Some people in earlier posts were bothered the store is small. I could care less. It carries a lot of items the regular pet stores don't. This is strictly a dog and cat store. I had so many choices. They can also order a lot of items for you as well if they don't have it, but carry that brand. read more

Impressive selection of goods and foods not found in typical pet stores. Higher price point for most items accordingly. Came in once, took several turns around the small store and not once acknowledged by 2 cashiers chatting among themselves or the vet (assuming on overhearing a conversation within earshot) in the area toward the back as I glanced at all the product within her vicinity. Made a purchase of bully sticks and had a very dry interaction with the young, male cashier taking the items, ringing, and giving receipt. No friendly interaction whatsoever. He returned to chatting with his female associate. We now go to Pets Supplies Plus across town for better customer service and better pricing. read more

I drive by this place all the time and it looks like a little rough hole in the wall pet store. I finally decided to give it a try and I am so glad I did. I raw feed my animals and drive all the way out to Chesapeake to get their food but I no longer will be. This place has freezers full of different raw food brands amongst tons of the balanced diet holistic like types of foods (kibble and raw). They ever had off the wall tings like raw goats milk, lamb femurs, and even boar! Their employees are EXTREMELY knowledgeable on the different brands and could direct me easily despite my dog having so many allergies. Every bone, treat, toy, etc you could ever need for you dog and cat they had. And if that still isn't enough to convince you, once a month they have a vet on site giving heartworm, flea and tick stuff, and tons of other services for CHEAP. read more

I travel from Ghent Square, Norfolk to this store on Birdneck, despite having a dog food store down the road on Hampton Blvd. I refuse to shop anywhere else for my dogs after they were poisoned by Chinese chicken treats I bought at Muddy Paws in Norfolk. I was at my wits' end, my pups were constantly vomiting white froth, were refusing food and could barely move. Someone put me in touch with Cheryl McKee, the owner of Doggstuff. Cheryl immediately recognized the problem as poisoning from Chinese chicken treats. We stopped giving the treats to the dogs and the dogs recovered. I took all the FDA warnings to Muddy Paws in Norfolk to explain why they should stop selling the Chinese chicken treats but was ignored. They continue to sell dangerous dog treats to this day. Cheryl, OTOH, will only sell American made dog food where she knows the provenance of the ingredients and the manufacturing processes. I feel totally confident that my dogs won't be the victims of poor dog food when I buy their food from Cheryl. My dogs are spoiled and fussy eaters and they frequently go on food strikes. Cheryl gives out samples of food so that we can find a food that the dogs will eat. She also will take back food that I bought in good faith and that the dogs no longer eat. Try doing that at the local Norfolk dog store. They refuse to do it. read more

I really like the products that this store sells. It's a little out of the way and it feels more like a warehouse than a store but things are priced fairly and they have what I am looking for. I am in the market for high end dog and cat food not available at most pet stores - actually ANY other store in our area - so sticker shock isn't a factor. This really is the store to go to if you are looking for quality food - not if you are satisfied with whatever you can buy for cheap at any big pet chain. I do love that she has what I'm looking for and the owner is very knowledgeable about what she sells. She is more than willing to talk to customers and help you find what you're looking for. We love coming in here with our pups. The staff always has a kind word and a treat and we can get the highest quality food for the dogs at reasonable prices! They are also the only place we could find that carries the Electromagnetic cards to keep mosquitoes away from us and our pets. After ordering dog food from another local shop close to my house and it not coming in when it was supposed to, it left me needing to find a place that carries taste of the wild dog food. TOW website led me to here. From the moment they answered the phone and even when I went into the shop, everyone was great. Super friendly, helpful, and informative about their promotions (military discount and frequent buyer program). I have depended on Cheryl at Doggstuff to help me select the appropriate diet for my dogs over the years. She is a wealth of animal nutrition knowledge & always happy to be of help with food as well as supplements. My chihuahua is taking salmon oil to help with heart & joint function. And my English Mastiff has been able to avoid being on daily pain meds by taking the Advanced Senior joint & hip supplement with MSM. It's great to see him pain free!! There are not enough great things I can say about Dogstuff! I have been going here for several year. Not only are the staff knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. They are kind and compassionate. The truth is in this life you get what you pay for and I make a way to make sure my poodle gets the best, high quality, safe, dog food that is best for him. It may not look as cosmetically beautiful as other pet stores but I care about excellence and they excel at that. These people are tops in working with pets and their families. We have an adopted a chiahuahua who was not eating dog food. We had run through every pet food available at local chains and grocery stores. Poor little guy was just existing on treats as a last resort every other day to keep him from starving. While walking one day, a neighbor commented on how fragile he looked and suggested I try them as she had heard they were great. THEY ARE TERRIFFIC!! She opened a can of food there to see if he would eat it. She was so willing to be sure we found a food to take care of his needs! read more

I have been a devoted and frequent customer of this business since I got my dog two years ago. I am a strong supporter of small independent businesses. On March 16, 2012 I was in the store buying my usual dog supplies. The owner was ringing up my purchases when I asked her about some dog scarves that were in a basket on the floor, some of which appeared to be marked down or on sale. I asked the owner about a discount and she said there wasn't one. I showed her two scarves that were exactly alike but marked differently and asked her if she could make them both the same lower price and she said no. She ended up grabbing the scarves right out of my hand in a very aggressive manner and stating I could not buy them. I was shocked and felt like I had been assaulted. This woman's behavior was nothing short of an attack and I was so shocked into speechlessness that I just left without making my other purchases. In hindsight, if I had the presence of mind, I would have told her she was way out of line and she just lost a very good customer. I will never do business with this store again. Obviously, the owner of this shop believes she can treat her customers with disrespect and worse! Maybe she thinks she has all the business she needs. I can assure you, she lost me as a customer. No one should be able to treat a person like she treated me. I think current and future customers should beware before they choose to do business with this woman. I strongly recommend against doing business with this store. read more
