Started going to Doheney a little over two years ago. I've seen 4 different doctors. I've been satisfied with all of them. Consistently very professional. No complaints about any of them. Dr Hou did my retina surgery and he's a very professional doctor. He clearly takes pride in his work. And he's very kind and likeable. Many docs would have berated me for not coming in to the office earlier--I should have (long story). But Dr Hou didn't and I appreciated that. I'll do my own flagellations, thank you. And he has a good sense of humor. My surgery didn't have the result I'd hoped for but that was not Dr Hou's fault. I certainly would trust him to do any future surgeries I might need. About waits: I've had about 20+ appointments in the last two years. Only once did I have to wait longer than half an hour. At my prior eye clinic (Pasadena Eye Specialists), the waits were nearly always much longer, 2 hours avg--sometimes 5+ hours!! That place was contemptuous of patients. I've never felt anything like that from the staff at Doheney. [See my review of Pas Eye Specialists for some juicy details!] I've seen about 20+ nurses/tech staff and they've been consistently very good. I've had a couple problems with nurses: One that coughed all over me w/out covering up. And another that...well, I'll just say I didn't like how she talked to me. I'm not a dog. But these were exceptions. The parking fee isn't great but I avoid it by having my ride drop me off outside the gate. The short walk is pleasant. It's a nice building and grounds. I think Doheney is a very good eye facility. I'd recommend it w/out reservations. Compared to my earlier experiences at the eye clinic in Pasadena, it's great! read more

The staff is super nice. They take good care of you. Dr Rootman has the best bed side manner. He takes his time and answers many question which brings lots of peace of mind. His care is superb. Definitely recommend Dr Rootman for any type of eye care. read more

I've heard of offices double or triple booking patients in a given hour. Here, though... They book 6 patients at one time, meaning each person in their waiting area has to wait two hours from check in to going into the provider's room. Multiple people in the waiting area confirmed to be seeing the same doctor, all checked in at the same time. I also need to mention that when I asked how much longer the wait would be, I got multiple glares from the back office staff and a piece of paper was waved at me, with one of the staff said rudely "you're next" and proceeded to turn her back to me. If that wasn't enough to give a picture of how this office is, you have to pay to park based on how long you leave your car in their lot. I wanted to note that Dr. Ip and his students were nothing but attentive and respectful of the situation. Dr. Ip apologized on behalf of the staff for the delays in the clinic even though it wasn't his fault. I appreciate the professionalism and can only say that it is so disappointing that such a leader has a team who does nothing but show disrespect for his patients. read more

Read the reviews, they are true. They will overbook all appts and you will wait at least an hour minimum. I arrived 15 min early for my appt. I ended up waiting for two hours before seeing the doctor. On top of that the parking is not validated and you will pay increasing amounts every half hour. I paid $12 parking and saw the doctor for 15 minutes. The lack of professionalism is ridiculous. I will never come back here. There are good eye doctors that run professional offices. This is not one of them. A huge waste of time on a work day. (The doctor and medical staff were polite and professional.) read more

If you want to make an appointment months in advance and then sit in various waiting rooms not being treated this is 100% the place for you. They clearly overbook. And then to add insult to injury they have giant private lots with tons of spaces and no reason to charge anyone for parking, but they do. And after spending endless time waiting you will be hit with a big parking fee for the time you spent enjoying their waiting areas. That being said Dr Chen is perfectly lovely and I highly recommend her. But doctors are not responsible for the overbooking and the scheduling and the parking. I don't blame her. I am sharing a deeply disappointing and upsetting experience with Dr. Chopra's office. While I do not wish to place blame on the office staff, I feel compelled to express my dissatisfaction with the doctor himself. My father and I have been long-standing patients at UCLA's main office. We have also had the privilege of being patients of Dr. Caprioli at the Stein Eye Institute for many years. Dr. Caprioli was an exceptional physician, incredibly knowledgeable, and a true pleasure to work with. Unfortunately, he has since retired. Given my serious glaucoma condition, I sought an appointment with Dr. Chopra. However, my request was inexplicably denied without any explanation. This abrupt and disrespectful treatment was unexpected, especially considering my long-standing relationship with UCLA. I urge potential patients to exercise caution when considering Dr. Chopra. While online reviews may be positive, my experience suggests a lack of empathy and professionalism. I hope that one day, Dr. Chopra will understand the impact of his actions. Its been over 6 months and nothing has been done to resolve this issue, in spite of me contacting multiple times to their office and their management. read more

Absurd wait times for people with appointments. Clearly over scheduling. I wasn't particularly impressed with the nurse/tech or doctor's interaction with my 1 year old. Overall my first appointment took 2.5 hours which is rough for an adult let alone a small child. read more

I have been seeing the ophthalmologist, Dr. Le here for years. The only good thing about this place is the doctor. (Luckily I don't need to see him that often. ) He is very experienced and knowledgeable. The staffs rarely pick up the phone. They have no clue about insurance. The wait time is the worst. Expect 2-3 hours each visit. They usually send me to complete the form for every visit to rate the experience. It seems to not help anything though since I'm still waiting hours every visit also I saw people complained about wait time since 5 years ago lol. read more

I came to this office because of the location (easier than hauling over to Westwood). I have a complicated eye prescription due to double vision and saw Dr. Yom who was amazing. Same for the whole staff (Velma, Eric, front office). I got the most thorough exam of my life; I stopped counting at 8 specialized tests. The staff are all highly qualified, true experts with really impressive credentials. Eyes are nothing to fool around with and I would recommend this facility to anyone who needs any eye specialty. read more

Update; Went back to Dr. Yom June 13th and she told me that the same applicators are used for each patient since it would be cost-prohibitive to use a new one for each patient! She recommended that I buy OTC eye drops and use these for 2 weeks because she guessed that I was allergic to the preservative in drops that I told her I WAS NOT taking. No improvement so I called the office manager "Manny" on June 24th who told me that he would get right on it and contact another doctor. Nothing happened so I called him back July 14th. He told me that Dr. Benjamin Bert would be contacting me. This didn't happen so I called Bert's office and made an appointment for August with a different doctor. I called UCLA to lodge a formal complaint and spoke with Norma (?) on July 17th who assured me that I would be contacted in 48 business hours. As of July 22, no contact. As I write this, I have to keep my right eye closed because it is severely uncomfortable to have it open and exposed to air. Before going to Doheny Eye Institute Pasadena, I had never experience the slightest issue with my eyes and had never voiced the slightest concern about burning or sensitivity. Now that my pupils have returned to normal after my appointment today, time to write a review. Noting larger than normal optic nerves in both eyes at my last visit, my retina specialist (Dr. Pettenkofer at UCLA Jules Stein in Westwood) recommended that I see (and, I can see pretty well, thanks for asking...LOL) a glaucoma specialist. So, after doing some research, I found the highly-rated and accomplished, Dr. Vikas Chopra. It's been my experience when scheduling appointments with UCLA specialists that, regardless of the body part(s) needing attention, it's at least a 3-month wait to be seen. I called Doheny Eye Center UCLA Pasadena on 10/21 and was offered an appointment less than a month into the future. Cool! Today, I arrived a few minutes early, was greeted by Denise (cheerfully, and with a smile, BTW), and was called in for the first of several required steps in 9 minutes! Back into the waiting room I go, and soon I hear my name announced for a visual field test, dilation, and eye pressure check. Once again out to the WR to allow for the dilation to reach maximum, I'm eventually summoned to have a variety of pictures taken. After another visit to the WR, I'm retrieved to meet and be examined by Dr. Chopra. I should add that each of the techs throughout this process was upbeat, skilled, and made me feel valued. From the moment Dr. Chopra opened the exam room door and greeted me, I was immediately put at ease with his friendly manner. He seemed genuinely interested in getting to know me. He began with a review of how the eye functions and what part of it was of concern for this visit. As he conducted the examination, he thoroughly explained each step, what was found, and necessary future treatment. I mentioned that I had seen a glaucoma specialist 10 years ago, around the time I was due for cataract surgery, and he found the notes/images to compare with today. Dr. Chopra answered ALL of my questions. Knowledgable, professional, genuine, and caring are just some of my impressions of Dr. Chopra. I highly recommend this fella to anyone who may have concerns about glaucoma. Lastly, I was in and out in just over 2 hours! For anyone who finds this excessively long, it isn't. I've had many visits with physicians of the eye, and 3+ hours is typical--due to the volume of patients, steps involved for gathering info necessary for a proper diagnosis, etc. Two-ish hours is unusual, but I'm happy it turned out that way today! There are some excellent doctors there whose care and attention I deeply appreciate. And I find the staff helpful and responsive despite other reviews. Things have changed however. There is currently only one cornea doctor and my visit with her (after Dr. Hsu left) was very unsatisfactory. My fiance has been waiting for weeks for a cataract appointment with that doctor. I have grown accustomed to the outrageous lobby waits there, but they are really unacceptable. I also contracted a staph infection around my eyes on the last visit, suggesting the equipment was not cleaned. This is all so disappointing because there are doctors there who are superb and they should be supported in their work by management that makes sure everything is handled professionally. read more

The front desk manager must be listening because I had the most efficient doctor's appointment in recent memory. Hence, my surprise with the negative reviews about the staff. I called early in the morning and was able to get a same day visit. I was ecstatic to be squeezed in on such short notice at the Pasadena location. I arrived a few minutes before my appointment. I completed paperwork, provided my insurance card, and processed my copay payment. As soon as I sat down to wait, the nurse called me into the room to ask me a few questions before meeting the doctor. Dr. Victoria Yom saw me. While she was succinct, (I was just thrilled to see her period), she was incredibly efficient and answered all of my questions in detail. read more

Doctors are great , however front desk is rude and a mess. The WORST part, nurse had long fake nails, she slapped on some "sanitizer" and proceeded to use her fake sharp nails to prop open my infants eyes for the eye drops. NO NURSES should have fake nails or work without gloves!! read more

I'm giving five stars because my daughter's doctor is wonderful and I'm grateful for her care. HOWEVER, when I recently called to make her a follow up appointment, I had to wait a very long time before anyone answered. Finally, I was transferred, only to be put on hold again before actually speaking to anyone. Then when someone finally did answer, I was sternly scolded for several no-show appointments. I didn't ask how many. Actually, the man I spoke to sounded quite angry. After making an appointment, he (it sounded sarcastic) said "see you in October." There's no excuse for missing appointments (and I apologized), but these were during the pandemic when I was overwhelmed (I have an autoinmune disease). So no excuse, but there is a context. My husband was handling our daughter's medical appointments at this time. He was also overwhelmed (I confirmed that he'd made the appointments when I saw him later that evening). Anyway, definitely our bad, but at the same time, I felt that the way the rep spoke to me about it was rude. read more

I came to UCLA Doheny after being diagnosed with keratoconus in 2020 by another eye doctor. Benjamin Bert told me yes that I could have the surgery. Later on at my next appointment he told me my vision was not getting worse and was just going to monitor my condition. I had my previous medical records sent to this office and I knew I was losing my vision as time goes by. I went to see Dr. Ronald Gaster and he confirmed that I needed surgery and it had to be soon. I am very disappointed with Dr. Bert he is very lucky he isn't being sued because I was going blind. I don't trust this man I do not want to return. read more

I waited for over two hours to see Dr. Chopra for literally 5 minutes- just like last time I saw him. When I told him politely that wait times like that are not very respectful of his patient's time, he told me he would no longer accept me as a patient and to go elsewhere for care. I got the strong impression that he was especially angry because he felt I embarrassed him in front of the pretty young trainee doctor that was following him around. I was referred to Doheny by both my primary care physician and optometrist for diplopia accompanied by severe headaches as urgent. I even went to Optum Urgent Care for the condition. First of all, good luck with someone answering the phone. I had called many times, as did my doctor's PA, she had called three times, and we both were put on hold for a minimum of a half an hour. Most doctor's accept an authorization code from your insurance over the phone. Not here. We had to fax over written statements including a litany of procedural codes. My doctor's PA again called to verify that they had indeed received all of the requested information and it was finally verified. However, upon calling to make an appointment, and having spoken to several different receptionists, some couldn't find the information and some outright denied having ever received it and we were told to send it all over again. This went on and on. FINALLY, when all of the information was verified almost two weeks later, we were told that the soonest appointment was on May fifteenth! This was even with all of the requested information marked as URGENT, I was then abruptly told to call UCLA in Westwood. In every instance that both my doctor's PA and I had called we were both treated dismissively and challenged that even though we had finally met all of the requirements, that they had never received or that it was incorrect and to resend it. But what really blew my mind was that it was not only myself that was being challenged but my physician's office as well. Now, after almost two weeks, I'm still left with blazing headaches, have lost precious time, and am now planning on a visit to he local ER. read more

I had an excellent experience here. I went because I'd been accidentally hit in the eye and had a floater that wasn't going away. I'd seen all the negative reviews before going, but I'd been referred by my doctor. The only hiccup was that the first time I called I couldn't get through. Phone just rang and rang. Tried calling again, same thing. I gave up. Then I tried a few days later and got through pretty quickly. After that, everything was smooth and very efficient. I brought along my laptop (and a charger!) becuase I'd read all the horror stories and figured I'd be waiting hours. They also warned me on the phone to be prepared for a wait. But I ended up not waiting long at all to go in. Then I had a bunch of different tests, but they all were back to back. The nurse who did an initial test was knowledgable and friendly. She recommended another doctor at the clinic who had a specialty in treating an unrelated issue I had. She remembered to give me his card at the end of the visit. The technicians I dealt with were nice, efficient and competent. The doctor I saw was clear in the explanation of his findings and pleasant. I was done and out quickly. I wonder what's going on with these Jekyll and Hyde reviews. Technical issues with computer or phone system? A few bad employees? (everyone I dealt with was totally on the ball.) Don't let the staff know you're unhappy with the service they offer. They will force you out. That is exactly what happened to me. An employee at Doheny was rude to me on a day of a return appointment on 6-6-24 with Dr. Hsu. In response I refused his services. I thought that was the end of it. But then two managers in the clinic found out about the incident. After that they made a concerted effort to force me out on the day of my appointment. They bullied me. They made it very clear that I was undeserving of medical care at Doheny. One manager in Dr. Hsu's office came into the exam room to see me with attitude. She threatened me. That was before the Dr even came in to see me. She told me she was cancelling a very important eye surgery the doctor had set up for me. She made medical decision for me for which I didn't agree to. Also, that same female manager deliberately interfered between me and Dr. Hsu relationship before I even got to see him. She gave the doctor misleading information about me to damage my character. Once Dr. Hsu came in to see me we had a conversation over the entire incident. Most of our time was spent on that topic instead of examining my eyes. Since the manager created trouble for me II told Dr. Hsu that it would be best to see another doctor at Doheny. When the manager found out about my intentions, to switch doctors, she with the help of a appointment desk manager wrote up a a damaging file on me and shared it with doctors within the Doheny network. Because of their actions no other doctor would take me. I got a call from the same female manager from Dr. Hsu office informing me they denied my transfer. Finally one morning I needed emergency refills for my glaucoma otherwise I could go blind. I gave Doheny a call to get an appointment to see an emergency doctor. The operator refused to give me an appointment. She told me I had to speak to a manager. I was transferred to the appointment manager. The manager told me "I know you, the reason why you were transferred to me is because of your past behavior". In response I told "him you got it wrong dude. You're the troublemaker. You keep on forcing yourself into my medical issues like I'm your prisoner out to punish me. Told him it must feel good playing with my life. Finally, I let him know I'm in the process of changing clinics. I'm not taking their abuse any longer. Told him I'm done. I could tell he got happy after that. He told me "with pleasure"and I could hear him typing like 100 words per minute putting that information in my file. It baffles my mind how their is no oversight or mechanisms in place to protect patients from overzealous protocols that enable managers to harm the patients medical care. I give this clinic no stars if I could. Notice how the business manager won't respond. Because they know it's true. read more

A year ago husband was told he needed cataract surgery by his optometrist. He also needed valve surgery so we didn't get to the cataract surgery until now. We decided we should get a second opinion and after some research I found Dr Hugo Hsu at Doheny Eye Center. My husband has had both spine and heart surgery in the last two years; we have met with a LOT of doctors. My husband and I agreed that we have yet to meet a doctor who was as warm, patient, informative, and kind as Dr. Hsu. The entire practice was run very efficiently and everyone was warm, friendly and helpful. We both know how difficult it is to find the truly caring doctors out there so we wanted write this review in case it might be helpful to someone else looking for an eye surgeon. Dr. Hugo Hsu is your guy. Ultimately he told us my husband had "excellent vision" and absolutely did not need cataract surgery any time soon, "maybe in 5 or 10 years" it might be necessary. How does Doheny Eye Center justify annual eye exam of a 11-year old child to cost over $1,085? Our child has nothing wrong with her eyes, except she needed new glasses perscription. We used to see an eye doctor, Dr. F. since her birth until he sold his own practice to join Doheny Eye Center recently. Since he is on medical leave, we went to see Dr. K. for her annual eye checkup. Dr. K. performed the same procedures as Dr. F., dilating her eyes, examining, and giving her new glasses perscription and the same eye drop perscription (to slow progression of nearsightedness). Few days ago, we received the following bill (charges are before insurance adjustment, etc.): *$1,085 Office Visit *$75 Refraction Total For Patient $1,160 Dr. F.'s office visit was around $200 (charge before insurance adjustment, etc.). If we knew Doheny Eye Center would charge over $1,085 for a simple annual eye checkup, we would have NOT gone there. No one told us. Maybe we should have asked?! But who would imagine annual eye exam of a child to cost THAT much? Thought we should share our horrific experience. read more

Keep in mind that right now they are not allowing people to come in with you, you must wear a mask and they are checking your temp before they walk you into a room. They did allow my sister to pick me up after my appointment since I had to remove the one contact I use to see with and I can't see diddly squat without it lol. I was referred to see a new cornea specialist and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with Dr Hsu. While we were going through all the past and current issues I've had with my right eye (the one I've had two separate surgeries on) he seemed to be well aware of all the Doctors I've seen in the past and the treatments we've done or tried. He also went over what can be done with the Keratoconus in my left eye. I let him know right away that I wanted to see one of my old Doctor's that was in this specific office, since he's the one that did my shunt implant for my Glaucoma. Right away he was able to get that referral going too so I'm happy I'll be able to see Dr. Francis again. The waiting process wasn't too bad, they let you know before hand not to be here too early and to be here at your scheduled appointment time so there won't be too many people in the waiting area. Both of the guys that helped me and the ladies in the front were really nice. read more

I went in to see Dr Quiros today. I was greeted and got checked in by Monica. She was super nice. I got there about 30 minutes early and they called me in 5 minutes after arrival. Shellie, the technician, was super sweet and patient and did a thorough examination on my eyes. Then the doctor came in with his fellow. But very nice. I didn't spend too much time with the doctor, maybe max 5 minutes, since I went in to make sure everything with my eyes were ok. He recommended a follow up in 3 months and I left. I was referred to Dr Quiros by my regular ophthalmologist and I did my research before making an appointment and he had great reviews. read more

Waited 6 months for an appointment and one hour in the waiting room before being told -- for the first time -- that appointments here "take between 1.5 and 3 hours." (For a baby, in our case.) There were so many kids waiting that most had to spend their 2-3 hours in the hallway. The kids were very patient and sweet about it. The staff at this office were not. I was referred here by my primary doctor for Cataract. The doctors are great and staff could be polite and helpful. I dont like writing reviews but I feel I should bring this to the attention of UCLA Doheney Management. Your surgery schedular needs to be more polite to people. Not only did I see her back in May but I also saw her today and both times she was speaking to me very rudely like I was a child. Back in May I thought she was having a bad day but this time around there is no excuse. She needs to be more polite and civil with patients. She doesnt know what we go through personally for her to give us a bad day with that attitude. Being helpful and informative is her job. Im there for Cataract treatment and she tells me to look at the pages and read for the info myself like Im suppose to already know that. Dr Chopra may be great at his surgical skills, but the overall experience of waiting hours past the appointment time, and not just once, but regularly, speaks poorly of the way this practice is managed. This practice is SO poorly managed!! Some of the clinicians do amazing work and have been helpful, but that isn't much use if you can't even get a message through to them. I and two of my referring physicians have been trying to get through to a doctor here because I'm having terrible acute issues. When I told him that it was unacceptable to make his patients wait almost 2 hours and that I understand things happen but a simple phone call would have been nice. He totally ignored me. Called the office to have an appointment with Dr. Hsu, they told me they cannot give me an appointment and will need to call me back, they never did, I called them back in a week, again they said they will call me back, they never did. I got fed up and called them again and said what is going on? they said Dr. Hsu will see you when the pandemic is over!!? I said when will that be? they were silent. I explained that I was tested for Covid with a negative result, had the Covid vaccine, I wear a mask and take all precautions, I cannot wait indefinitely for a problem with my eye. They did not seem to care. The question I have is Dr. Hsu hiding at home? Is he still getting a salary from UCLA? Is all the staff at that office still getting paid while they are all hiding at home? UCLA gets 30% funded from the state, i.e tax payer money, we pay their salaries, their pension, their health insurance, pay raises and all sort of benefits every year, and they....stay home and refuse to see patients read more

Over $1000 for a visit. Only came here because I was recommended by my optometrist. I asked the front desk to reassure my insurance is accepted and got the ok. Wait time is a while over 2 hours. They put two eye drops, spent 5 minutes just to confirm what my optometrist already knew. I was hit with the bill 2 months later with no sort of heads up, and that my insurance wouldn't cover it? Very unfair way to do business. I would have denied services if that was the case. I've been reading around and I'm assuming something went wrong with the procedure codes between the office and the insurance. read more

I would definitely recommend Dr Huang because he is highly qualified and a leader in his field. However, I had a 9am appointment and didn't see the Doctor until 10 am. Frustrating because I still had to get to work. Seems like others who came in after me we're seen and left before me. I think they forgot about me even though I checked in at 8:45. After having to go to Jules Stein at UCLA in 2015 and not being happy with the wait and below par equipment, I was happy to be referred to Doheny Eye Center instead of Jules Stein. I didn't have to wait long but once I was in an exam room, I realized that it doesn't matter the location, UCLA is UCLA whether it's in Westwood or Pasadena. First, they wouldn't accept my up to date visual field results and eye photos from my regular ophthalmologist. Telling me they want their own test results aka bill for everything possible. Second, and this is my BIGGEST PEEVE about UCLA eye centers. Their equipment is never up to date with the calibration schedule. All of the equipment is a year past due on service that means that the last time they were checked was in 2016. How can you get accurate readings and test results with equipment that isn't properly calibrated? My eye pressure registered a good 10 points higher than it normally does. Lastly, after speaking with my own doctor, we decided what the best procedures would be for me at this time. I used UCLA mychart to contact the doctor with being told it would take 2 business days to get a response. I sent that Monday morning. It's now Thursday and I have heard nothing back. Also, my chart has so much incorrect information on it, I don't know where to start to get these people to get even the basics correct. If it weren't for Dr. Francis being the only one certified for a specific procedure in the Los Angeles area, I would not be going back here. read more

Steer Clear!! Was referred to Dr Quiros by my opthalmologist. Called to schedule an appointment and spoke with Becky who informed me that I would have to submit my records for review before I would be permitted to schedule an appointment. I should note that I stressed that this was a medical emergency and time was of essence several times during our call. My Op's office submitted my records the same day. It has been 7 weeks and I have yet to hear from anyone in this practice. There's a reason such poor reviews. My Op referred me to another neuro op and I was seen within three days.
