Now that our daughter and son in law have had their first child, we can enjoy Doke's again. It's a short drive from Jamestown to Murphy's and for us, it's worth it and there's no way or, would I ever risk our lives in the Bay Area for sushi. I wouldn't pay the prices either. We've never had a bad experience or a bad meal at Doke's. Yes, it's small and I'd definitely recommend making reservations. I really rather like its quaintness. We like the table by the front window. The portions are nice and there's not a roll I don't care for. Tempura is not greasy, and today just one of the vegetables to choose from on our shrimp/vegetable tempura was eggplant. Not only was it delicious, but the color was spectacular. The shrimp tempura was fresh and sweet. For those that venture into the foothills from the city, and are not as impressed as myself or others, perhaps your better off stopping at a McDonald's when you go through Manteca on your way back down the hill. I grew up here, moved to the coast for JC, moved inland for college, then finally moved back home a few weeks ago. Among the many things I was looking forward to when coming back home, Doke was easily in my top 10. They are consistently delivering fantastic dishes full of so much wonderful and diverse flavor. This is hands down the BEST sushi in the area. You don't have to go to a major city for excellent sushi. Go here! The prices are reasonable and you can get full off sushi without going broke. The quality of the fish is like none other - clean, fresh, heavenly. The presentation of all the food is artistic and intentional. I was most impressed by the vegetable tempura. On Google and on their Facebook page they state they have outdoor seating. One would assume that means outdoor dining, so we took our dogs up with us to get dinner, specifically the tempura vegetables because they are really very good. They do not have out door dining and on top of that the young woman working yesterday evening (7/8), was extremely rude about it. If she hadn't been so rude, we would have ordered to go. We will not be going back. We went to another restaurant in town that does have outdoor dining (most do) and had a very good meal. The sushi at Doke is sub par anyway. read more

Doke Sushi has some of the best sushi I've ever had - and we eat it everywhere we go! We despaired of finding good sushi in the Motherlode. We tried the new place in Sonora (Shiro Ninja) and it was terrible. Then an acquaintance in Sonora suggested we try Doke Sushi. OMG - amazing! We were with a group, so we were able to try numerous rolls. Our favorites were the Calaveras and the Hadean, but they were all excellent. Our only problem was that we are used to the size rolls we get in other restaurants, and we ordered too much! The rolls here are considerably bigger than what we are used to, especially the maki rolls, which are usually teeny tiny. But we loved every bite! I sure wish this place was in Sonora as Murphy's is a bit of a drive for us - but it's worth it! Definitely need reservations if you come for dinner. read more

We have eaten here several times. We ate here tonight and had some issues with the service. We ordered spicy garlic edamame, which we love, and it was so hot that our mouths were burning and we were both miserable. When we informed our waitress she told us that we didn't know what sriracha was and we should've known. I love spicy everything but this was overkill. She seemed completely inconvenienced when we told her and just said that's fine we'll take it off your tab and she walked away, blatantly rolled her eyes, shaking her head at me and talking to the other, older waitress. So disrespectful. No one ever came back to ask us how our food was. There was no offer of, would you like something else instead? We have been coming here for a while and before the sushi chef and servers were AMAZING. This experience was frustrating and disappointing to say the least. read more

My husband and I have stopped here many times in the past. Excellent sushi, very good service and very nice atmosphere. A year ago I was diagnosed with a gluten allergy and it seemed that sushi was going to be a thing of the past. We were looking for a nice restaurant to have lunch with our granddaughter and she wanted sushi. Our waitress was very understanding about my allergy and helped me with gluten free options (including providing me gluten free tamari sauce and leaving sauces off my rolls). I had cucumber salad (excellent and very fresh) and shared two rolls with my husband. Absolutely delicious, outstanding service by our very knowledgeable waitress! Our granddaughter loved it too! I had absolutely no I'll affects from eating there, so this past week I returned with a good friend to eat there again (and once again- felt great after!). I was so excited to learn that we now have a Japanese/Sushi place in Murphys! I couldn't wait to try it. The place is very small...it is located in the old Newsome - Harlow Kitchen, so I would definitely recommend making a reservation. Very nice, clean and friendly atmosphere and the food was extremely fresh and flavorful. Probably some of the best Tempura Veggies that I have ever had and the California Roll (available with imitation crab, or with real crab for a $2.00 upcharge - I had the real crab) was very good, but I think my favorite item was the Chicken Udon Noodle Soup....OMG, crisp veggies, a very tasty broth, grilled chicken and the mushrooms were to die for! My daughter had the Spicy Tuna Roll and said it was good. My fiance had the Newsome-Harlow Roll, which did not contain seafood, but sweet potato and smoky bacon instead. It had a kick but he really liked it! We were very happy with our dinner, service was really good and I love that they use an iPad with Square - makes paying your bill quick and easy, especially with the build in tip calculator! But, we called to place a to go order that we would pick up at the restaurant and were told by the female server that answered that she was too busy to take our order and had too many tables to wait on and that we would have to call back later and maybe she could take our order then. And, she said all of that quite rudely. I was polite. A simple, I'm sorry but we won't be able to take your order at this time, would have been okay. She seemed to want to make us feel bad for calling the restaurant. I would suggest that this server be trained in customer service. I won't go to Doke again even though I do like the food. Service is warm and welcoming, they serve Orion beer (one of the few remaining imported Japanese beers that haven't succumbed to the scum that is Anheuser-Busch or Molson-Eh) and the pan fried udon noodles with beef are AMAZING!!!!! Ordered three rolls, spicy tuna (good), the spider roll (smelt fishy, fish is never suppose to smell fishy) and one other roll (shrimp, avocado and sauce - pretty good) udon (chicken) and curry (chicken). The curry had good flavor, but I could not get over how dry the chicken was. I thought it had to only be the curry chicken, but I was wrong. The exact same chicken was in the udon. Bone dry. The udon was flavorful and with a nice mix of veggies. Unfortunately, in the future we will not return back to Doke Sushi. read more

Well I honestly didn't realize I'd never left a review for Doke, and now I'm feeling a little sheepish. Doke is the place I go when I really need a good meal... one that satisfies me in all the ways a good meal should. It's fresh, healthy, delicious, expertly crafted and always beautiful. Every bite is a work of art. For real. My favorite is the Chef's Special but I'm also partial to the Unicorn, the It's Always Sunny and the Dragon, as well as the curry... yellow most of the time but green if I'm feeling a little adventurous. And of course the miso, and the nagiri, and the salad. Maybe you should just try it out for yourself? I know, I know... who eats sushi in the mountains? Well, I do. Also of note: I eat gluten free due to an autoimmune condition and they've always accommodated my dietary restrictions easily and without complaint. I love that we have good sushi up in in the hills. The food is delicious and the seasoning is always on point. I love the flavor of the chicken teriyaki and the lack of any sweet/sticky sauce. Finally took the time to check Doke out and I walked out completely satisfied, and FULL! The boyfriend and I had the Big trees roll, Calaveras roll, Haydean hand roll and the chicken katsu plate. I also had a small side order of seaweed salad. I definitely recommend those rolls! The rolls tasted so fresh and were delicious. Do NOT pass up the Dungeness crab option. The crab was so sweet and you get a generous amount as well. Definitely worth the couple extra bucks. (I think it was $2.00 more but I forgot to check the receipt and the waitress didn't specify the amount.) The chicken katsu was good but a little on the dry side. I can't wait to return and I plan on being a regular. Doke sushi is delicious and I will be dining there again very soon. So happy to have a sushi restaurant near by! read more

Spent the weekend in Murphys and one of the highlights was our dinner at Doke! Great rolls, tempura & curry ... really delicious! The restaurant is very small, so reservations are a must (at least on the weekends I think). The staff was incredibly nice! They didn't make us feel rushed and were very attentive.
