Forgot to write a review until now. We rented a car in June. I rented through Capital One Venture website and accidentally booked a full electric vehicle, not a Tesla. Their other shitty one where you can't find a compatible charger- the Kia. It was my mistake. We immediately saw the car and went back to the front desk to ask for another car. They said it was an "upgrade" and they'll credit what we paid for the electric vehicle to another gas car. There wasn't any credit and we saw that we just paid full car rental price, which was a rip off, extra $50 on top of what we already paid. I checked online and should have just booked online and gotten a refund for current booking. They totally rip you off at the front if you want to change cars or rent a car. Better to do it through a third party vendor. We made sure to return with full gas and took pictures of everything. read more

Called customer service from garage and was told twice that my car was there and ready to go. I had a text that said they would hold my car for up to 8 hours if my flight was delayed. From $899 to $1600 WITH A $377.00 DEPOSIT. IF you run into a problem ,ask for a manager to explain it to you! iI was told the upgrade should have been at no extra cost. This was the worst car rental ever. I booked online thru Priceline for about 115$ initially. When I got to the front desk. I was swindled and scammed they used sleight of hand or I should say sleight of mouth to add features and upgrade vehicles that I had no idea they were doing. When I went downstairs to look at the charges for the vehicle receipt and I saw that I was charged $670 apart from my $113 booked on Priceline. I went to go back into figure out how we could fix this and change these surprise upgrades. While they were understaffed at the front desk and each customer took over five minutes apiece I was behind 4 to 5 of them finally getting to the front desk to ask about it and they said there was a 10 minute window that had closed and we cannot make any changes. We had a prepaid rental through Priceline. When we arrived at the airport to pick up the car, the Dollar representative shrugged her shoulders and said they had no cars available, and that there were about a half dozen people ahead of us with reservations waiting for a car also, and that it would be at least several hours wait at the airport to see if one was returned. We had prepaid for the rental and were relying on it to attend an event. We were very inconvenienced and it cost us a great deal more to get an alternate car from another company, because Dollar didn't have the car they promised us and that we had already paid for. When we complained, they acted like it wasn't their problem and offered no solutions or recompense. I will not be using the company again in the future. It is simply unacceptable to pre-pay and reserve a car and then have Dollar inform us that no car is available when we show up. When I have to rent a car I always go through AAA. This time I took advantage of my Southwest Rapids Rewards Chase Visa Card to get extra points, and the best deal this girl could get was with Dollar. Wait time was short on a Thursday and the employees were super nice. The compact cars were all gone so I was given a white mid size Hyundai SUV. It had wireless CarPlay which was a plus but when it came to pick up...that was a hard no! It was like a tortoise competing in a bunny race. Oy! Return was easy at the San Jose Airport. Please be careful before renting a car with this company. I came to know this is owned by Hertz (Dollar, Thrifty, Hertz and so forth I don't know how many the own). I never had such incidences in my prior rental with other companies. First of all, renting process did not go well, the staffs were inefficient, did not communicate properly did not perform the job efficiently. There was no one at the site to pick up the car. I handed over the car almost 12 hrs before the rental deadline. I handed over to the employee, who was documenting holding an iPad, walking around the vehicle, I showed him preexisting damages. I even asked him if I had to check out at counter. the He said, I was all set to go. But, next day I saw an unauthorized charge of windshield damage repair cost of $500. I tried to reach out to them by phone, but it was impossible. I drove to San Jose, airport and talked to the managers. The manager including, Jason, lied to me that the charge they cannot reverse at the site because it was already forward to the corporate. They gave me the wrong number to call, after spending several hours I was forwarded to customer service. They said, it was charged by the airport and is valid they cannot reverse it. If I needed, I had to go to the airport and talk to the managers, which was useless suggestions. Rather, requested to escalate to mangers but I was kept in dark with changing versions but adamant about the charge. It is still in dispute. Folks, I would not rent a car with Hertz group in future at all. If you have to then, please be careful while renting a car with them, please take thorough pictures and videos before and after. DON'T RENT HERE! I wish people read reviews before renting. Seems a lot of people have had terrible experiences like me. I reserved a car for June 5 for a rate that was too good to be true. It was too good to be true. Waited 90 MINUTES in line to be told I do not have a reservation, now my rental is 2 1/2 times the cost for a rental of a lesser car. I walked to the garage and waited in a line for a car for 60 MINUTES and gave up. I went back to the desk and they couldn't credit my card but took my paperwork after asking me to take a picture of it. Walked across the hall to the closest car rental which was Alamo. Walked up to the desk, the rental was QUICK and CHEAPER. Walked to the garage and the Alamo person walks to me and tells me to take whatever car I want. NO WAITING! I had a bad experience with dollar car rental when I few to Miami. We landed at 11pm, we had a car reserved, but the only car they had life was $290 over my budget. With on other place open I had to rent that car. The next day I realized it was infested with bugs!! When I complained and turned it in they offered my no compensation for my trouble. Worst experience ever! The service person Siva asked me if I wanted insurance and I clearly told him I do not. He put two forms of expensive insurance on my account anyways. After a few days I looked over the receipt and noticed the extra insurance. I called the rental modification number to get rid of the insurance. They told me they could only make a note on my account to cancel the extra fees. When I return the car, I would have to talk to the service counter. On the day I returned the car the line was too long. I waited about 30 minutes but was at risk of missing my flight so had to leave. I called Dollar customer service a few days later and they said the only thing I can do is go to the rental location. I went to the rental location and the lady working there told me the only thing I can do is call customer service. The operations manager Maria won't pick up my phone calls or respond to email. Expensive only if you use their insurance and don't refill your own tank. NO HIDDEN CHARGES -- SO I DON'T GET THOSE reviews unless their particular locations did so. Umm.. they explained everything to me, and I grilled them. IF THEY TALK FAST - stop, ask them to repeat slowly. ESTIMATED CHARGE * includes * taxes & drop off fees. THE RESULT - My Dollar Rent A Car ended-up being gorgeous.. Okay I wasn't hip with the radio-dial-for-gears ( a 2019 Pacifica ) or the hybrid stopping-engine at every light -- but that stopping did save me a lot of gas. AND the beautiful thing had disappearing seats which allowed me to put half my mom's house possessions which she couldn't take with her, into my car to take back to my home. What the heck ? I had to write this .. TIPS - - USE A CREDIT CARD WITH EXTRA $200-500 if possible (at least extra $200): They *must* add an extra ~$200 which will not be charged to you .. unless you disappear with the car (plus plus). SO that extra charge will be in "HOLD ON YOUR CARD" until you turn the car in, at which point the secondary charge, that is what you will be paying now that you've turned your car in, is then put on your card. THIS MEANS: you will temporarily have 2 charges on your card "PENDING" -- the first will disappear within a day of the 2nd's payment. Some people's cards are okay with "pending" amounts sitting over their limit; some aren't. So this is an FYI, check with your credit card company. - BOOK AHEAD - USE AAA: Book Dollar through AAA which will give you a discount. - FILL UP BEFORE RETURNING: And at a gas station as close to the drop-off as possible!!! LIKE MOST RENTAL PLACES GAS IS EXPENSIVE FOR THEM TO REFILL!!! $4/gallon at San Jose is the Dollar Rent A Car charge.. $9/gallon in Los Angeles. GAS CHARGE IS WHERE YOU PICK-UP YOUR CAR: The gas refill will be of the pick-up location's rates. So I picked-up my car in San Jose and only had to pay their San Jose $4/gallon rates in L.A. (phew) as I didn't have time to fill the tank ( huge move ). - LAST SECOND CHANGES ARE POSSIBLE: But of course you're at the mercy of what-ever is sitting there in their garage (if anything). I booked a "CR-V" because my 2007 Honda is sizeable ... I didn't realize they've shrunk and when I went to pick-up my car this past Thursday I was in shock as there was NO WAY it would fit all the boxes from my mom's house. RIGHT THERE THEY ALLOWED ME TO CHANGE MY CAR... and right there was a white 2019 Pacifica -- huge yet manageable for me to drive. YES !!!!!!! What a gift. Thankfully they'll change on the spot. I'd would also give it a zero if I could. I rented a car this past week without understanding their deceptive practices. Went to the desk and Jason (at the PDX airport) enthusiastically told me there were 'only' large SUV's available-a great deal if you're a family of 7! (I was renting as a single person). But 'I could upgrade to a smaller car'. Ended up charging me $100 extra a week! Ridiculous ! To get a smaller car! I walked to the farthest reaches of the parking lot to a very full lot, with every car imaginable. Never would I rent a car from Dollar again! First, they did not have the car I reserved (which is just a simple mid-size). They ask for $25/day MORE for "upgrade". I refused to pay extra (already paid online), so they downgrade me to a compact size. With no apology or refund. When I returned the car, the fuel line is barely touching the full line. The agent asked us a few questions, took our license, our credit card, and off we went to pick out our midsize car. I became a member of their reserve a car and head straight to the car, skipping the desk with the line 20 customers deep. I can't remember the name of their program bit it really doesn't matter. I go upstairs to see where my vehicle is parked. Hmmm...no one in the kiosk. So I wander around looking for one of their staff. No such luck. All the while I'm dragging my suitcase along for the ride. I go back to the kiosk and there is a stand I had not noticed prior that has rental jackets with my name on it that tells me to do downstairs to see an agent. Oh Lord help me! Not that line again!!! I wait in line and the agent asks for a credit card and Driver's license. Why? I entered all this info online! He said they need to verify. Ok. I get it but why in the hell wouldn't this company send me a welcome email or something telling me that I need to see an agent if this is my first rental? I dragged my suitcase around only to wait in line. This is what I was trying to avoid! Then I get my car and am told the computers are down so they hand write stuff down and I'm finally on my way. Come back to the airport 24 hours later to return the car and computers are still down. "You'll be getting a receipt by email m'am." Ok and dash to get my flight. No receipt after 3 days so I call customer service. They cannot find that I rented a car. What? I'm on hold for eons. Ask for a supervisor and I'm given an 800 number. Leave a voice mail and write a lengthy note to online customer service (for which o never got a reply). Get a voice mail from an 800 number telling me that If I meant to call Dollar, I've reached an investment firm. The customer service agent gave me a bogus number! Next I get a call from vehicle recovery telling me the car is 5 days over due. They have no record of me turning it in. I'm charged $500 and go off on the guy. What a horrible company. The story ends with a credit card dispute where we are accountable for about $100. It took 6 weeks to resolve this issue and a whole lot of frustration. I will never rent from Dollar again. Such a fraudulent company. I rented a car through dollar rentals website. I reserved a car and paid. The site said I had to pay for the rest of the money in person and I can use a debit card. When I got over to pick up my car the lady at the counter tells me my car isn't reserved and that I would have to pick the next available one. The other car was way more expensive on top of a deposit that I was not told about online. She also told me I can only use a credit card in order to pay since I wasn't a local. So then I ask her for refund and then she told me I had to call to get my money back. This experience messed up my whole trip. Me and my boyfriend was stranded with are 2 small children that were crying the whole entire time from me waiting in line for an hour. I ended up having to book with another company which was triple the amount of money since it was soo last minute. This ruined everything i had planned for my family. Everything was going well until I got a bill for a Golden Gate Bridge toll. The toll was 8.35, but they charged $15 for an administrative fee!! Rented a car on 1/31/2022. 2019 Nissan Versa with only 40k miles on it with check engine light on, I called to notify customer service the moment it came on, on hold for 30 plus minutes and they said "just ignore it" I said multiple times are you sure you don't want me to exchange it or its safe to drive and I won't get blamed for it coming on they said no we can't exchange it and its ok. I even asked to speak with the desk and they wouldn't transfer. Later I then I realized on the key tags they wrote "Check Eng." clearly showing they knew its been coming on. Car rental was ok but customer service is very bad. Lots of people lined up at the counter but only 1-2 employees present so the wait time is really long. Also, I rented a car for 2 weeks, used it for 1 week and returned early. Before I returned early, I called and was told that I was eligible for refund but I needed to return the car first before knowing the exact refund amount. After returning the car, I did not get any money back (except insurance part), and I spent 2 hours on the phone with customer service trying to get some refund, only to find out that not a single penny can be refunded. Although I do not expect full refund for the 1 week, it is really disappointing that I can't get any money back, and I feel that they just lied to me when I called before I returned the car. NEVER, NEVER, EVER RENT FROM HERE! Rented a van for a day and returned it the next day as agreed upon. As driving to the return garage, the worker told me to leave the keys in the car and they will email me a receipt. That didn't happen... A couple days later I looked at my credit statements and now getting charged a $100 a day from Hertz. I called the local number listed and it does not even take you to that office but a centralized customer service office. The wait average is 30 mins! The staff was not helpful, they said they will just email that office I rented from and get this sorted out. 2 days later, no response and still getting charged with the $100 per day. I drove back to the place I rented from and they were like "oh we can fix it but it'll take sometime to find the car" A day later still nothing was fixed. This place will drive you insane with the poor customer service and the lack of employees doing their role to make accurate returns. My friends visited me and rented a car from Dollar. Shortly after picking up the car, the radio stopped working. Moreover, the car they were given had tires which are totally worn out. This is a safety hazard and is not legal to operate on public roads. I strongly urge that you rent elsewhere. I have a little crush on SJC these days, but Dollar Rent-A-Car sort of harshed my mellow, man. Things were going along swimmingly with the new terminal, quick baggage claim and just a short walk across the street to the rental car area. So much better than a year ago! But then the usual car rental shenanigans took place. We ended up getting what we reserved, but what should be a quick five minute transaction droned on and on... I've just recently purchased a car, so it was an unpleasant surprise to have the rental agent give us the hard sell on items like upgrading, insurance and pre-paid gas. Been there, done that, don't want to do it again. The Dollar lot where you collect and return your car is on the top level (seven) or what I would call the cheap seats. The full-size car options were small and a little sad, but we ended up with a dinged up Dodge Charger with out of state plates. It was actually a blast to drive even though it was a complete gas hog. The return process was much simpler. It is not that I've had great luck with Enterprise or Budget at SJC, but now that the airport has had its makeover, I think these guys all need to raise their game. read more

I never write reviews, but for this location I had to. I have received customer service in the past, however this team went above and beyond. The staff treated me as a human before a customer. Not only were they helpful, but went out of their way to make sure I had the best experience during my stay. WOW! I'm very surprised at all of the negative reviews for this Company which is conveniently located directly across from San Jose International Airport. Ck in went super smooth, headed up to floor 7 to PU our reasonably priced nice 'clean' white mid-sized SUV. Throughout the past 4 years of flying back & forth from OC, we have never had a bad experience! That includes using all of the many rental car choices that are available right there under one roof. But best price gets our biz, since there's SO many to choose from. Turning in the vehicle was just as easy! Drove right up, was greeted by staff who took our paperwork & keys, and away we went. Warning: Do NOT fall for the low price associated with their "Lock Low and Go" specials. This rate is usually as low as the compact price, but guarantees you at least a mid-size car, BUT the actual choice is picked by the agent at the time the car is picked up. What this means, is that you will be stuck with a big ole MINI VAN! Yep - that is what every rental car company usually has the most of these days, and what you will end up getting with this rate class. To get OUT of that mini van choice, you will have to upgrade your rate. Therefore, to avoid zipping around Atlanta in a big clunky soccer mom mini van, I had to pay an additional $18.00 PER DAY to get into a FULL SIZE car. BOY, did I get raped! Second wonderful part of this relationship: They don't assign you the car at the agent's desk...you walk downstairs and the guy in the garage wanders around to show you your choices and you pick it here. (oh, this guy also said 'don't EVER get a "Lock Low and Go" rate unless you want a mini van"!) Now, since the car you picked isn't on your rental agreement yet, the guy at the exit booth has to manually write up all the details about your rental vehicle. This creates quite the long line to get out of the airport... Another delay and frustration. Now you see why Avis and Hertz are so popular. read more

I rented about ten days ago. The weekend of the stadium series game at Levi field. The car I reserved was not ready. They offered me a different car instead and kept my rate. The car I got was hammered. Had scapes and damage to it. I have never had a problem with dollar in the past but for sure would never use them in San Jose. It wasn't a surprise half of LA was coming to town for the game why were they not prepared for the mass amounts of people and have cars ready. That is poor management. Front license plate was folded in half and the attendant at the exit gate kicked it back into place what a worthless person and employee he is. Update. After taking all the online surveys about my experience with this dollar location. I got a email that stated we are sorry hope we can do better next time. No offer of a future discount or anything. So for all of you out there don't rent from this location pay more and go with a better service. Reducing my two stars down to one now. read more

Got to the counteract about 10:30 am Saturday. The line was about 15 people and 2 rental agents. After 15 minutes in a line that did not move at all I went to Hertz . Hertz not only got memo. The road in less than 15 minutes but beat the price by $ dollars and upgraded me to an intermediate car just for my trouble at Dollar. Had to cancel my reservation at the last minute (while at the check-out counter) since I wasn't told prior to my arrival that a credit card was needed. I'm not used to renting cars, don't travel for business- how am I supposed to know that a credit card was preferred? and since I only had a debit card they informed me that a credit check was required for debit card payments. "um, no. Sorry, I decline since I don't agree with having my credit run and having my score deducted due to an unnecessary inquiry." How inconvenient! To top it off, it's been a month and my refund for the collision cost still hasnt been refunded to me. Whenever I attempt to call the customer service line I end up on hold for 15mins! Ugh! This entire process was highly unfavorable. I'll never use DOLLAR again. read more

Horrible. Like truly terrible. I made a reservation for a car. When I showed up, I had to wait 1.5 hours in line because they're so understaffed. When I get to the front of the line, they tell me it'll be a 2+ hour wait, because are waiting for people to return cars. In other words they oversold reservations and don't have enough cars in to service those reservations. I spent $70 on uber to get there and go back home, waisted 3 hours of my day and had to cancel my original plans. Atrocious business, with garbage practices. I will never use them in the future. read more
