Owner has on and off days but more off than anything. Meaning very rude at times, food takes forever. I recently ordered 35 minutes ahead and it was still not ready and they didn't give me what I wanted in the side dish area. Greens and cabbage cooked too long cabbage was gummy, no Mac n cheese. Really really happy with my experience at dolls kitchen, we came at opening, and was helped quickly. The owner and her son have fantastic customer service, the food came out quick, the chicken was crispy, tasty and had a perfect spice (I got the spicy chicken.) The soul food here is uniformly excellent. In particular, I love their Mac and cheese, smothered pork chop, and their cornmeal crusted fish. The owner is one of the friendliest and most hospitable smell business people I've met in Fresno. She passed out samples to guests while we waiting for our food. The two negatives that keep this raring from a 5 star are the ambience (which is pretty spartan) and the wait time (which is quite long). Plan to wait at least 30 minutes for your food if you don't order it ahead of time. It's still a place that's definitely worth going to, but not on a tight lunch break. read more

I am born and raised in the south so didn't have high expectations, but man was I surprised. It was very flavorful and the fish was fried to perfection. My only complaint is that the greens had way too much sugar in it. I've never had sweet greens before. I visited Doll's Kitchen for the first time towards closing and was not sure if they were going to take my order. I told them that it was my first time visiting. The two women were lovely. They gave me sides to taste so I would know what to order. The fish and shrimp dinner w/cabbage, mac n cheese was delicious!! Even the corn bread reminded me of home. The restaurant was very clean with great music. Not much of a meat eater but they have BBQ on Saturdays and Oxtails on Sunday. I've been wanting to try Doll's Kitchen since the restaurant moved to its current location on the SW corner of Blackstone/Shaw and actually went there about a month after opening at that location but it was too crowded the day I went so I decided I'd wait until the hoopla over this place settled down. Fast forward to a Saturday in late June when I decided to call in an order for pick up. I placed the call but there was a bad phone connection which the person answering the phone acknowledge the problem was on her end. We couldn't hear each other that well and she said I could come in as the restaurant wasn't busy (this was around 6 pm). My daughter and I decided to just drive over and eat in, as the restaurant was less than 10 minutes away. I had already read alot of the reviews for Doll's and was excited to try the food. The only thing I didn't want to try was the greens with cabbage as some of the reviews mentioned the side was too sweet (my sister had told me the same thing). Reading reviews that raved about the fried chicken and fried fish, as well as the mac-n-cheese, I decided to order the plate that had both proteins and choose the mac-n-cheese and BBQ baked beans for my two sides (I wanted to stay away from the sweet greens/cabbage). Low and behold, they were out of the baked beans. Not wanting to get another starch, the only choice left was the greens with cabbage which I reluctantly ordered. My daughter ordered the two meat BBQ plate (ribs/hot link) and the mac/cheese, greens/cabbage as well. Eating in, but not wanting to have soda or punch (they were also out of the punch), we asked for a cup of water. There were no cups and our only choice was to purchase bottled water at $2 for a 17 oz bottle. They were also out of hot links and my daughter decided to get extra ribs as a substitute for the link. We sat at one of the tables and about 15 minutes later our food, in styrofoam "to-go" container was ready at the counter for pick up. Now for the review of the food.... the chicken (drumstick/wing) had a nice coating and crunch but was under seasoned with not much flavor. The three pieces of fried fish had a nice coating of cornmeal, but was way too salty. The mac-n-cheese, was just "ok." The greens with cabbage (which was all greens and no cabbage) was way too sweet to the point they were almost inedible. In fact, I only took a couple of bites and threw in the towel on the sweet greens. I understand putting enough sugar in the greens to cut the bitterness, but these were like having "candied" greens. Candied yams is on the menu; these candied greens were just as sweet. The meal came with cornbread which I also thought was a tad too sweet. My daughter ate all of her greens but also said they were way too sweet. Now, no one eats soul food for the health benefits, but looking at the majority of customers (black and brown people) which has a high incident of hypertension and diabetes, one would think a restaurant would be more mindful of the sugar and salt content in its savory dishes. If a customer wants something sweet, they can order dessert. Even though there are several tables for those who would prefer to dine-in, Doll's is more of a take-out restaurant. You have to go up to the counter and place your order and pick up your meal which is served up in a styrofoam container when it's ready. While at our table eating, there was alot of take out order activity going on. The bottom line to my experience at Doll's Kitchen is this: I found the food a bit underwhelming. If you haven't tried Doll's and plan to, my suggestion is that you order your food "to go," but if you want to eat in and drink water with your meal instead of a soda or their punch, remember to bring a bottle of water with you. And unless you like your greens on the sweeter side, I strongly recommend not ordering that dish. read more

The fried catfish was pretty good. The fried shrimp was also very tasty and deliciously plump. I enjoyed their spaghetti and their mac and cheese. The cornbread was good as well. Everything is made to order, so be prepared for looooong wait times. Two HUGE negatives for me: There was a young black man there who opened up shop around the posted time but said he still had to mop. So, we waited at least 10-15 minutes longer before the store officially opened. I don't mind that. I understand the struggles of a small business, but it was the terrible, terrible customer service from the women behind the counter that ruined it all for us. [1] The older heavyset woman (Doll herself, I'm guessing) and the younger woman both seemed annoyed and irritated we were there to hand over our money. We spent almost $60 for lunch for two people, but we were willing to let their sour demeanors slide as it was pushing 110 degrees outside and thought hey, maybe they had a busy day the day before. Whatever. It's fine. Our food was ready 30 minutes later. We got our food at the counter and reminded them we ordered a bottle of water and a can of Coke. More attitude. I knew I shouldn't have but I asked for the 'Smack' sauce I heard about on social media. I was given a death stare and said with more attitude "We don't have that." I settled for hot sauce. It was grudgingly handed over in a small plastic container the size of my thumb. Terrible customer service. [2] The other HUGE negative was the fried chicken. It was picture-perfect but was severely underseasoned to the point of being tasteless. I was floored by that. Not sure how they got the catfish and the shrimp right but missed what I figured would be their signature dish. The bad customer experience and the bland fried chicken pretty much guaranteed we won't be coming back. What a waste of our hard-earned money. read more

Do your taste buds and your soul a favor and come get this food. My husband and mom follow Doll's on Instagram so when they opened at this location in the Chevron at Chestnut and Butler, we had to go. And now I can't count how many times we've been back. They are super busy right now, any time of day I've gone, so my advice is to order ahead online. They have a counter in the Chevron station so there's very little space to wait. Also, do NOT park at a pump, seems common sense but, you know... Anyway, the food! My favorite so far has been the neckbones which comes over rice with gravy. That rice is so unnecessary Hahaa my favorite sides are the yams and greens which have cabbage in them. I love cabbage in greens. Overall, the sides have a sweetness and bit of spice to them; just seems to be their cooking style which is fine with me. We've also tried the fried chicken, fried fish, fried shrimp and bbq chicken. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the bbq chicken - it wasn't drowning in sauce - thank you - and oh so tender, not dry. My family liked the Mac n cheese (I didn't care for it). We've also had the beans which are so so good, different than I'm used to with ground meat. When you see desserts, get them! The banana cake and banana pudding were good. This was one of those eat first take pictures later moments. I found this place while out on a scouting for desert adventure. What a yummy good find. I ordered a 2 piece chicken dinner with a side of greens. The chicken: nice temperature, the skin crisp/flavorful not overly spiced. The meat was moist (thigh and leg) The cornbread: the perfect accompaniment to my greens The greens: these are flavorful not just boiled greens with a taste of bacon fat. These had a nice, slightly sweet flavor and that touch bit of tang to them. now you add the cornbread to soak up the juices from the greens and it takes it to a whole new level of tastebud enjoyment. AND it's just as good the next day, the skin on the chicken stayed crisp after heating and there was no greasy taste or feeling to it what so ever. read more

Came here after seeing the article in the Fresno Bee and apparently so did everyone else. We got there maybe 30 mins after they opened and there was already a line! We waited about an hr or more to get our food. My husband and I shared the Leo Platter and the food was delicious but they shorted us on the corn bread. I don't think they didn't anticipated to be that busy and had to make more of the fly and made it super thin so it would bake faster. The flavor of the cornbread was good just sad it was so thin. Doll's food looks great from the pictures, it's only 8 minutes from me, so time to try out someplace new Came after almost not finding the place, it's located inside a gas station. Was a little run down inside and could use a new counter. The sign with the food and prices was a little hard to read. Got the 2 piece chicken with greens and macaroni n cheese. Comes with a slice of cornbread. The crust in some parts of the chicken was a smidge hard but otherwise the meat tasted perfectly cooked. Needed more seasoning tho. I didn't taste salt on the chicken. Didn't like the flavors in the Mac and Cheese, I'll probably skip on that one the next time around but the greens were to die for!
