The House Soup Dumplings with Classic Pork were fairly standard and ultimately underwhelming. The dumpling wrappers were too thick and doughy, and they tore apart too easily. The soup broth itself lacked the richness and umami depth that make great soup dumplings memorable. I was also disappointed that no fresh ginger was provided, nor did I see it offered. Traditionally, soup dumplings are enjoyed with fresh ginger and a vinegar-soy sauce mixture, often served on a soup spoon to catch the flavorful broth. That said, the House Special Beef Roll was the standout of the meal. Each roll features a crispy, flaky scallion pancake wrapped around tender five-spice braised beef shank, sweet hoisin sauce, and crisp, refreshing vegetables. The beef was slow-braised until exceptionally tender and infused with warm Chinese five-spice and soy sauce. The combination of savory, sweet, and salty flavors created a satisfying and flavorful bite. Many diners seem to enjoy the soup dumplings more than I did, so your experience may differ. Had no problem getting a table during lunchtime on a Friday. They have a good amount of seating. But I'm sure it gets busy during dinner, especially this being a "newer" dim sum spot. Ordered the green beans, which had good flavor but a bit salty. The wontons came with a lot of chili oil, which I enjoyed. However, there was a mountain of cilantro with green onions and garlic. I felt bad because my friend doesn't eat cilantro so she could barely eat it. If only we knew that having been written on the menu, we probably would've asked to remove it ‍ The Shanghai noodles were good. I liked their thickness as well as the sliced vegetables with it. The pork that came with it was a bit overcooked. The pork XLBs were fine. I was more thrown off by the sweet soy sauce & vinegar we were supposed to dip it in. First off, they only gave us one of those sauces, and we had to ask for another one as there were two of us eating. Secondly, the sauce was sweet, which is very unusual for a XLB dipping sauce. Not sure if they were trying to be different but that caught us off guard. Lastly, we ended with the chocolate and mochi XLB, which tasted exactly like Din Tai Fung's, so we were definitely pleased with that. The staff were really nice. Finally got to try this cute little dumpling spot. Service was great from the moment we walked in and the staff checked on us several times throughout our meal. Food came out quickly even though the restaurant was busy. We tried the fried rice, noodles, spicy dumplings, soup dumplings, pan fried dumplings, bok choy, and beef rolls. The beef rolls were definitely our favorite item. Unfortunately, most of the food lacked flavor for us. The noodles were overly chewy and the garlic bok choy tasted more like thickened sauce with chunks of garlic added in rather than a well developed garlic flavor. Overall, the atmosphere and service were great, but the food was a bit underwhelming if you are used to more traditional and flavorful dumplings. We have been wanting to try Dumpling U ever since they opened recently and were honestly impressed with how quick and satisfying the whole experience was. All of our food came out within about 5 minutes of ordering, which was impressive given how much we had ordered. We ordered a mix of dishes to try a little bit of everything. The House Special Beef Roll was a standout, crispy with a really nice beef-forward flavor that made it super satisfying and how I remember it tasting growing up. The classic Pork Soup Dumplings were decent, though the wrapper was a bit on the thicker side, and I felt like the pork filling could've used a little more seasoning to really enhance the flavor. The Pan-Fried Pork Buns were great, and I appreciated the heads-up from the staff that they come out piping hot and can squirt juice if you bite in too fast (they weren't kidding). Even better, they held up surprisingly well when reheated the next day. We also got the Dry Fried String Beans, which were super fragrant and flavorful, though just slightly on the salty side. The Honey Walnut Shrimp had huge pieces of shrimp with an extra crunchy coating, definitely a must order. And of course, can't go wrong with a side of white rice to have as a base for all our dishes. I really wanted to like Dumpling U. With all the hype, I guess I had pretty high expectations. We went on a Saturday evening and were seated quickly. Our server was very friendly and helpful. We ordered two baskets of the pork soup dumplings, cucumber salad, chicken fried rice, sichuan won tons then ordered the strawberry crepe cake, strawberry mochi ice cream, and custard buns for dessert. Pork Soup Dumplings: 7/10, they were good but not the best. The flavor seemed off, I don't know how to describe it. Cucumber Salad: 3/10, the cucumber had an odd texture and tasted like watermelon rind. The sauce and spice level were nice. Chicken Fried Rice: 6/10, it seemed oily and had an odd aftertaste. Sichuan Style Wontons: 8/10, I liked these the most but they still had an odd flavor, same as the soup dumplings. All of the desserts were good. Crepe Cake: 8/10, very light. Tasted like strawberry ice cream. Strawberry Mochi Ice Cream: This came on a plate with two mochis cut in half. I didn't have any but my son said they were yummy. Custard Buns: 9/10, these caught us off guard because they are custard but tasted like coconut. I do recommend these because they are fun for the kiddos. Pro-tip for the future is to join the wait-list on Yelp ahead of time. Dumpling U is a small chain and we're so thrilled to have another noodle and dumpling option in Fresno. For just the 2 of us, we ordered seafood Shanghai noodle, chili wontons, and crab/pork xiao long bao. Everything was really tasty, with my favorite being the Shanghai noodle. Part of it is nostalgia for me-- that fat noodle well-flavored with that perfect soy sauce color and fresh seafood (bay scallops, shrimp, and squid). The chili wontons were a close second, filled with pork and shrimp and drenched in chili oil. The XLB was a bit lacking in crab flavor and also has a thicker wrapping than usual. I decided to try the new restaurant after hearing great things about their beef rolls. The pork soup dumplings, however, were a bit disappointing. The dough was undercooked in spots, still white even after steaming. I'd suggest skipping the spicy pork soup dumplings--they tasted like raw gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) was added directly to the pork filling, which was a bit overwhelming. The Shanghai noodles also missed the mark. The dish was dominated by pepper--either black or white--and came out very spicy. The pepper aroma was so strong it overpowered everything else. On the brighter side, I spoke to neighboring tables, and many enjoyed the fried rice and buns. Service was attentive, and there can sometimes be a wait for seating, so make sure to sign in on the waitlist. This place honestly surprised me considering it's been popping all over my TikTok! We ordered the Cheese Wontons, Garlic Broccoli, Pork XLB, Beef Roll, Sichuan Wonton, and Cha Siu Fried Rice. However the reason I am giving them a 1 star and if I could it will be a Zero is due to a bad burn I got from their food. My son ordered their Pan fried shrimp and pork Bun. When the waitress she didn't tell us they were pipping hot. I took a bite and right away their steamy-boiling liquid gushed out and burned my face badly. I had to put cold water on face and then ask for some ice as I could not stand the burning feeling on my face. The manager came and apologized but only took the item off the check and gave us a 20% percent off the check. I have been in pain and have bad burns on my lips, the skin between my upper lip and nose, the inside of my nose and some part for my cheek have been peeling off. There were already about 8 tables seated, and even though I started entering my info at the kiosk, the front greeter was able to seat me right away which was great! Water was brought out as soon as I was seated. I ordered the chrysanthemum tea as well since it was a bit chilly out. It was perfect. On the table were the condiments, vintager, soy sauce and chili oil for your use if you wanted any of that. For food, I started with the scallion pancakes, super crispy and flavorful. I will definitely be ordering these again. I also got the classic pork soup dumplings, garlic bok choy, and spicy wontons. Everything was delicious, and the filling to wrapper ratio on both the dumplings and wontons was perfect. There were so many other dishes I wanted to try, but I knew I wouldn't finish everything which just means I'll definitely be back for more. The space is clean and spacious, which I really appreciated. There's good distance between tables and it didn't feel overcrowded at all. Dumpling U recently opened, and we waited a few weeks for the initial buzz to die down before checking it out. We were excited to see how it would compare to Din Tai Fung. The restaurant layout is really nice, with seating on both sides of the entry and a small waiting area where you can actually watch the ladies hand-rolling dumplings fresh on the spot. Definitely such a cool touch. We ordered the pork sausage fried rice, pork dumplings (potstickers), and the spicy soup dumplings. Everything was delicious. The dumplings are larger than what I remember from Din Tai Fung. The soup dumplings could've used a little bit more heat. I did not notice a distinct spiciness to them versus the ones that I've had that were not spicy at all. While they're not quite at that DTF level, they're still the best soup dumplings we've had in Fresno so far. We've tried another nearby spot that didn't measure up, but Dumpling U is definitely the closest we've found to our So-Cal favorite. It absolutely satisfies that soup dumpling craving when we can't make it down to LA. We even recognized one of the servers, so it was nice seeing a familiar face. Service was excellent, provided by Cody and the ambiance was pleasant, and the dining area is bright with comfortable seating. We'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. Came for their soft opening and was so excited to see we got a legit dumpling spot finally open here in Fresno! I appreciate the effort into the design and feel of the dining area. Great place for casual dining. Be sure to join waitlist when you can. It was an hr wait within just 15-20min of opening. You know it's legit when the first thing you see when you walk in are the two aunties wrapping the fresh dumplings by hand! Having just returned from visiting Shanghai their xia long baos reminded me of the iconic Nanxiang Steamed Bun restaurant (南翔馒头店). I also like that they make them larger than ones you would get from Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐) which helps keep the dumplings warmer. One order was plenty for two people to share with two other items. The xia long baos passed the pick up test. The wrapper are supposed to be delicate and yet they did not rip or tear when picking them up from the steam basket. The soup inside has the perfect umami flavoring and they're so perfect for cold weather. Their beef rolls are a must try - it's like a Chinese style burrito wrap made with a flakey crispy pancake wrap with a little chewy texture. The beef shank inside was cooked perfectly - normally takes 3-4hrs to braise it so soft! Can't wait to come back to try their beef noodle soup and pan fried dumplings! Very excited to try this place, but didn't realize that it had become so popular so quickly. Be prepared to wait unless you join the Yelp waitlist in advance. Inside there's nearly no waiting area so if there's inclement weather, everyone is going to pack in by the door and the rest of us will be suffering outside or staying in our car monitoring the online waitlist. Inside there are two different rooms, which is good if you have a large party because you can essentially have space to yourself and then there's a very large dining room with many tables and booths. The wait time that we have noticed on the two evenings we've come during the weekday are roughly 35 to 45 minutes in the evening. We opted to try the spicy wonton, XLB, beef noodle soup, and the house special beef roll. The spicy wonton was nice, although Jingle Bao has a better and more flavorful spicy wonton. The XLB had great flavor as did the beef noodle soup. We were a little disappointed with the house special beef roll. It was a little too greasy for my liking and lost that flaky crusty texture within about 20 minutes. Service was great although the food coming out was really slow. We chalked that up to a soft opening. They have complementary iced tea next to the register while you wait. We ordered what we usually get at din tai fung not necessarily to compare but to see if this will be our spot when we have the cravings. The workers were really nice and attentive. My friend and I ordered to share. Our order: House Special beef roll, custard bun, steamed mantou, char siu bun, chicken deep fried dumplings, and house special sausage fried rice. Took about 20min for our food to arrive, once one plate arrived they all started to trickle in. Everything came out fresh and hot. The food was amazing!! The custard buns were delicious and so cute, made into pig characters my daughter loved it. The char siu bun was my favorite the meat was so flavorful and it just melted in my mouth. The special beef roll was my friend's favorite it was a mix of sweet and salty. The fried dumplings were delicious. Didn't realize the steamed mantou was just the steam bun with no filling. The house fried rice was perfection! Towards the end of service they were so busy and we were waiting for one of our servers to return so that we could order more food to try and also to go. It took a while for them to come back but it was understandable as they were quite busy so we just decided to order to go. We were seated in the smaller dinning room where all of the tables were filled and it was a bit loud I was having a hard time hearing what my friend was telling me and she was in front of me. For limited time they are also giving out super cute re-usable bags. Overall we enjoyed our food! The restaurant is clean and the staff is so friendly! Stopped here for lunch with friends. Overall our experience was great. We ordered cucumber salad, dry string beans, tan tan noodles, pan fried chicken dumplings, and my friends ordered the soup dumplings. The service was great and quality was definitely comparable to Din Tai Fung. The reason I only gave it 4/5 stars is because there's no option for chicken soup dumplings. They only have pork or pork/shrimp mixed. I would've even been happy for shrimp only soup dumplings. Maybe this is something you can add to the menu like Din Tai Fung. We had gone for lunch. 20/10 Best place in town for dumplings! I couldn't wait to get home and I'm currently sitting at the restaurant still! It's THAT good! You definitely have to get their classic soup dumplings! Everything else was perfect, and flavorful. Their service is great even when they were really busy. They were quick to collect empty plates, so your table doesn't get too full of dishes. They even had two ladies in the front making the dumplings by hand behind a glass window. I tried to get pictures of most of our plates, but we were too hungry and missed a few! It was a bit on the pricey side, but it's well worth it. read more
