We have been here twice and our first time was a much better experience. This time we were never waited on and finally had to tell the server we needed service. The server was not attentive and it took forever to finally get our food. The food was ok - but unfortunately, the poor service put a damper on our night out. We were brought our check prematurely and told we could pay anytime, and we were not at all done with our meal. They seemed to be in a hurry to get remaining customers out of the restaurant. Our take out containers were placed on the table - for us to take care of. I was not impressed with the experience here. We are hoping the restaurant can improve their service. read more

Not sure how this place could be much better. Ambiance: awesome-made me feel like I was in the countryside of Japan although I've never been there. It would have been nice to eat outside in the garden but all the shaded tables were taken. Next time I'd go earlier to get a better table. Service: we did have to ask for water refills but the food came out promptly. Food: I don't understand how a land-locked place like Denver can have such fresh sashimi but it did at Domo. The spicy tuna bowl had some of the freshest tasting shiro maguro I have ever had. Price: lunch for three adults and a toddler was about $15 a person after tax and tip. I rarely give 5 stars, but I think this one deserves it, or at least 4 1/2. The food is delicious, authentic, and the decor is exceptional. We had Sunday lunch in the garden, as the weather was gorgeous - in the 70's. (flowers not yet in bloom but when they are, it will be incredible) The garden is so peaceful. We had the Nabebono (meat with vegetables simmered in a pot) - salmon, which was incredibly fresh and tender in the miso soup; beef, also tender and tasty. Generous portions of meat/fish and fresh veggies. Top quality tea served - had the sencha - the best I've had. Highly recommend. Will definitely go back and try other items on the menu. Service was excellent - even the owner stopped by to say a few words. read more

We stopped by during our visit to Denver. I really loved this restaurant at first (probably because of the ambiance). But quickly wished we had picked somewhere else. They said they were closing soon after we had placed our order (I wasn't aware they closed at 2:00 & then reopen at 5:00) which is understandable but I didn't think that meant GET OUT ASAP. First our waitress got our drink order incorrect (we are fans of the saki bomb) So she brought us 1 beer instead of two. We asked where the second one was and she said "Oh we're sorry but the bar is now closed too." I felt very rushed out & the employees weren't very nice at all :( Or accommodating to guests. I wasn't allowed to have soy sauce? I'm not sure why but she didn't really tell me anything other than a quiet "Sorry, but no" & walked away. We made sure to pay asap in case they wanted to leave or go eat because we felt bad. They dropped off to-go containers but I had no idea how to properly get the giant almost full soup into my container without making a mess. Then they got annoyed about having to help with that. If our presence was going to be such an inconvenience you'd think the hostess (who instead of greeting us just complained to her friends about the heat since there's no AC) would have suggested we return at 5:00 vs seating us anyway. I'd go again but I guess just for 1 beer outside & long before closing time. read more

I've been coming here for near three years now; a late review almost makes me feel guilty because how wonderful the food is here. Firstly, they have a very unique and cool interior decor and beautiful outside garden, so no mater if you eat inside or out, you will enjoy the environment. They serve Japanese country style food which means you won't find the common rolls from your favorite sushi restaurant. However, they offer the country style sushi which is unique and fun to eat. The fish meat quality is A plus; personally, I think it is even better than some of our top rated sushi restaurants in town. There is always delicious side dishes coming with any meals. You will get seven side dishes at dinner. The style is very similar to Korean BBQ side dishes, but the variety and taste are superb. If you are looking for some high quality/unique Japanese food/sushi, make a stop here; lunch or dinner, you won't be disappointed. FYI-I found this very interesting fact at Domo: all of the waitresses are named after flowers(Lily, Iris, Jasmine, etc.) and all of their waiters are named after planets/stars (Mars, Plato, Moon, etc.) read more

The ambiance (once we entered the building) was terrific. I could easily imagine that I was in a old Japanese fishing village. The food was terrific. I ordered a Ramon special from the north mountains (I can't remember the name, but it was an insert in the menu). The Ramon had a terrific "mouth feel" and the broth was terrific. My wife had another special that was an insert - sautee'd beef in a fruity soy sauce. It was terrific as well. The decor and the food were great. The service was kind, but very slow. We had to wave for a waitress to point out that part of our meal hadn't been served, we had to waive again to request a drink, we had to waive again to point out that the soda was flat (the waitress was going to check on it), we had to waive again 15 minutes later to ask if the soda tap was fixed (it wasn't), we had to waive to get them to take our empty appetizer plates, we had to waive to pay our check ... Note that we arrived at 11:15 on a Saturday afternoon, and the place had about 2 of 10 tables seated, so it wasn't rush hour. The facility also has a nice museum, a cute garden, and a representation of a home prayer area. Based on the decor and the food, we will definitely be back, and bring friends. They need to gig their wait staff a bit; and will quickly rise to a 5 star rating for this reviewer. read more

I took my family here for authentic ramen last night. we were disappointed with the product. I ordered the spicy miso and it had very little flavor and needed salt. Twice I asked for soy sauce or any kind of salt and they said they do not have comments. I understand that they think they are true country style Japanese food, but when it comes to Customer Service I would expect that they would want their food quality to meet the needs of the customer. I have been to Japan twice and have not experienced ramen with no condiments. The The rest of my family got the soy-based ramen and again were disappointed with the lack of flavor or taste. tonkotsu ramen would have been the ideal choice, but they do not have tonkatsu at Domo. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful in there is a great ambiance, but did not make up for the lack of flavor. The doburi bowl was good, but was not the reason we dined at Domo. If you are seeking good ramen look elsewhere. read more

From the outside the place looks like a regular warehouse off of the highway, but this could not be further from reality of the treasures housed inside. The food is one of my favorites in Denver. Its country style Japanese, some dishes more spare than others, but always sating. A truly unique experience and beautiful decor. Yes, they do not offer extra soy sauce (and don't ask either, seriously!) and sometimes there is a wait or lost drink orders, but the meal makes up for any stray from the usual dining experience customers may be accustomed to in these here parts :) read more

I think this place is great! Awesome ambiance especially in the Summer when you can sit in the Japanese garden outside. They specialize in Japanese country food so do not go there expecting boats of sushi. This place has great donburi bowls, ramen and udon soups, shumai, and great cooked fish. Lunch is a better value than dinner by a long shot. They also have a decent selection of teas. I would give them 5 stars if it were not for their service..honestly it's hit or miss...still worth the food though. read more

Patio seating in the summer is nice and relaxing. Indoors is fun and you feel like your somewhere else . Food is good much different from typical japanese and sushi style places. Interesting no soy sauce on tables and they dont have it to offer. Food does not need anyway. My favorite is the teriyaki salmon with curry. Homestyle japanese all the way. read more

You will surprised how beautiful Domo is once you enter. The decoration, architecture, to the general atmosphere of the store is just amazing. Service was lacking. It was our first time here and ordered several dishes, the appetizers were forgotten... I found fish in my chicken teriyaki bowl....but management did an excellent job reassuring that Domo is worth coming back for. If you are ever in the area, do give Domo a try. I feel like Domo is fun, the first time... but after you have seen it, and focus on the food and service it is lacking in many areas. The food is ok, not great, not horrible. However, the service is nothing to write home about. We waited 20 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. Eventually I flagged a waiter and said "can we order some drinks". The waiter actually said "no"..?.?.?!.?.! So I sat there flabbergasted wondering what to do next. I decided to go find someone else. After talking to two more people, I finally got them to bring us drinks. We ordered a large bottle of beer and sake. They returned with the beer and sake but forgot to bring us cups for the beer and only brought two cups for the sake (there were four of us). After about 5 minutes (beer getting warm), I decided to use my metal water cup for the beer. It sucked cuz the beer tasted like metal. Finally, someone brought us more cups (after we were done drinking our first round). Then the waiter who said I couldn't order earlier told me that we could now order. We ordered appetizers and entrees. Approximately 30 minutes later our food arrived, but they never brought the appetizers. They also made a mistake on my entree which I told two or three people and never got corrected. Finally, we were sitting there at the end of the meal and a girl came and asked if we could giver her our sake cups!! That was the last straw... I normally don't write reviews but the service was all horrible that I had too. Now I have been to many ramen places in my life (been to japan twice and grew up in Chicago), this place is just not that great. read more

The wankosushi dishes are amazing! There are over 50 sushi styles (fish, sauce, spice combos) to choose from. The fish was fresh and the serving size was very reasonable. We also appetized on the japanese pancakes...didn't think it was spectacular, but its the only place in denver you can get this. Worth trying. The restaurant has a very traditional japanese authentic feel. The decor is very unique and the outside garden is beautiful. Unfortunately, the only downside was the the service. The service was really slow...we waited 15 minutes to just order our food and another 30 to get the check. It was also difficult to get our waiter's attention. read more

I've been to tokyo twice for business and this is the closest old school authentic Japanese food you will find in Colorado and really mostly anywhere in the states. Domo is my favorite Japanese restaurant in Denver. The atmosphere inside is truly unique and makes you feel like you're far from home. The garden is my favorite place to have lunch and is a nice escape from the bustling city. I love walking past the kitchen and hearing the chef's greetings, and I enjoy that the akido students are put to work in the restaurant. Dinner is on the pricey side so I always try to make it for lunch and have tried several dishes (oyako donburi is my favorite) and none of which have been disappointing. The sake service is a lot of fun too. I also appreciate the explanation of why one shouldn't pour their own sake, and when pouring for someone else to let a little run over the top. I also owe it to Domo for teaching me that rubbing my chopsticks together is rude. read more

Been here a number of times, usually very good, this time not so. Please, I love the ambiance, what many people here don't know is that many of the servers are their senior Aikido students and sometimes instructors. They do considerable community outreach here, and are to be hugely commended for that. Tried something new this time, and it sucked. I tried the Nabemono lunch bowl for one. The beef was tasteless, tough, boiled and in the bowl in long thick strips. I almost took out my Spyderco to cut it as there are no knives. As it was I had to take huge pieces of tough boiled meat and chew it in half at the table. The Gyoza appetizer dumplings were fantastic. The iced Hyacinth tea is really good as well. Stick with the pork Teriyaki. read more

Great experience if you want to forget your in Denver for an hour or two.This is a beautiful place, the staff was very helpful with helping us make our menu choices.the presentation on the dishes were nice .the food was pretty good.the only issue I had. Was the vegetables had a fishy taste to them. Might have been a one time thing who knows.but worth the experience.most plates are around the 20 dollar area .most other places this would be to much to pay but the atmosphere made it worth it. First, I have had lunch at Domo before and enjoyed it very much. Lunch recently was a different story. Noodles served in broth were sooo salty that I could not eat them and when we told our waitress (who was a trainee), she informed her superior who came over to the table and who asked, "Are you going to pay for this?" I was so surprised at her response, that I said yes, which in retrospect was a mistake. I have never had this response before at any restaurant! I then ordered a beef dish with rice that I had enjoyed previously. The miso soup was good, but when I took a portion of the beef I had to spit it out, it was mostly fat. Bottom line, two entrees I had to pay for and no lunch. read more

Wow. This place is a true gem. I cant believe I've lived in Denver for over a 1 1/2 years and I've never been there up until this past weekend. I sat out in the garden. How beautiful! I ordered one of the ramen dishes. The ramen was great. The side dishes were to DIE for! Also, I got a mini side of the chicken teriyaki. It was the best teriyaki I've ever had. I would have ordered the ramen a bit more spicy- miso ramen. My only complaint was that the service was a bit lacking. The server never came by after the meal was served and we had to flag down another server to get our bill. Also, very reasonable prices-- much cheaper than I expected for the portion size and quality (this was for lunch). Otherwise, an overall perfect experience. read more

We've been enjoying Domo for 25 years, but the new menu drove us away. Instead of a flavorful, healthy country-inn style bowl of Nabemono with lots of seafood and veg's and a tempura prawn on top, it's now a salt-bomb noodle bowl with a donburi side, also salty. A stroke in a bowl - will keep you up all night. As noted in other reviews, the constantly rotating staff of young women give only fair-to-poor service; if you're lucky you'll get a male server or an older competent woman. But here's hoping we get the news that the old menu is back, and we will be back for the wonderful atmosphere and great food - the service is tolerable, after all. read more

As said before GREAT atmosphere! Loved all the little "museum-type" nooks and crannies. The food was good, disappointed they don't let you share an entree. Husband and I not big seafood eaters, but came with son and date and they were. They had been before - we are visiting from out of town. Son loves it! It was good and service was good. Sat. evening with no reservations about 45min- hour wait. but was able to walk around and browse. Loved the country side dishes that came with meals. read more
