This pork centered Korean bbq restaurant just had their grand opening and they'll definitely be seeing me again. This place offered the most unique kbbq experience. All of their pork is dry aged for at least two weeks!!! Everything is the highest quality and well seasoned. Overall vibe: vintage vibe with intimate tables ideal for dates or groups of 4 Food: one unique thing Don Don offers that NO other kbbq restaurant in nyc offers is the bone-in pork loin. It came with many pickled ban chan, choice of soup, egg soufflé and 3 different pieces of pork (fresh belly, aged pork collar and aged pork belly) that the server cooked for us. Our favorites were both pork belly and the collar was good. The server cooked the meats to our liking and was very attentive to our needs. The only negative was the smokiness during cooking and our clothes definitely still smelled smoky after leaving the restaurant. Most noticeable were the dipping paring options--they used to use fresher wasabi (that has a slight crumbly texture) now they use one of those flavorless bright green paste; they used to use authentic Jeot-Gal (fermented seafood) but now they've switched it to plain Ssam-Jang (bean paste mix). The flavor is so good unlike other places I've tried. Since it was our first time here, we got the meat combo so that we get to try all the cuts of pork. It also has these cooked garlic on the side and a lot of sauces and banchan to pair the pork with. I particularly love the soy bean sauce and the roe, so much so I asked for more soy bean sauce. (Spoiler: pork collar might be even better than belly) The sauces they come with are also slightly different from your typical ktown classics. I forget all of them but there was a ssamjang with anchovy that I CLEANED up. Also these don't come with rice so you gotta order that separately. We also ordered the Gogi Guksu which was a tasty clean broth with thin noods and no shortage of thinly sliced pork belly in it. All this was more than filling for two hungry bois that just played 5 hours of tennis. And just when we were thinking of getting boba, they must've heard our thoughts cuz they brought out complimentary cups of black sesame soft serve which is not on their menu but I would've definitely ordered cuz that sht SLAPPED. We love that we don't have to go to Koreatown just to satisfy our cravings for good korean food :) We always order the butcher's special. The meat is so tender paired perfectly with the ssam veggies and delicious garlic. You can always request the server on how you would like your meat to be cooked. The garlic can be refilled just ask the server. I love the sauces here - it was made by the chef and not bought elsewhere. I always look forward too with the perilla leaves in their ssam veggies. It just makes a perfect bite for me with the meat. The banchan's quality are really good - similar taste profile with what they have in their michelin star restaurants Mari and Kochi. To put it bluntly, this place is extremely overpriced for what you get and it's clear they relied heavily on the cute decor and tableware, cool induction grill, and strong soju to distract customers from the lack of quality. The only reason this place is getting an extra star is because of our server and the bussers. Their tasting menu is $47pp and boasts egg souffle and vegetables for the ssam so we were expecting a good amount of refills on the vegetables and gyeran jjim. However, please note that if you come with a party of more than 1, everyone has to order the tasting menu and you don't get a proportional amount of sides and vegetables. Imagine our surprise when we were told that we all had to share a small tin cup of vegetables and that we would only be given 1 order of gyeran jjim. Laughably, we had to ration out the food to one another in order to make sure everyone had enough by ripping lettuce leaves in half. That alone makes the near $400 bill so laughable. The iberico was priced at $45 for one portion and I was expecting something amazing but it was evident that the restaurant didn't put any care into it because while it was seared, it still had a strong smelly taste. When you're paying that much for a cut of pork, you don't expect the taste of bad odor when paying for a supposedly higher quality cut of meat. I've also had doenjang jjigae numerous times and this was the first time I've had it taste like the mildewy, dirty water you use after washing a rag in it? The various cuts of pork belly that were aged differently were also nothing to write home about. Notably, it was also off putting that they would put the cuts of raw meats on the ledge near our heads when the table didn't have enough space. That's just weird...how about just not bringing all the cuts of meat out at once when it clearly takes time for the other cuts to cook properly? TLDR: Avoid this place and take your money to one of the other kbbq restaurants that have an established reputation of having quality cuts of meat and aren't stingy about giving side dishes. Else, you'll end up clowns like us and begrudgingly accept the fact that we should have went to a tried and true place instead. We sadly kept repeating "at least we tried it, now we know."
