Last night we ate at Don Luis for Steak night and Victor C was our waiter - he always goes above and beyond - we had a mix of steak, sea bass and corn soup - plus dessert & a special anniversary dish - always great. Tonight we went again for Italian night and had minestrone soup, penne pasta, lasagna and garlic shrimp - Brandon made us Mexican coffees and he was just a delight!! Return worthiness: If was staying at the resort again Highights: - Theme menu nights: thought this would be buffet but it's ordering off the menu - Ocean view outdoor seating overlooking the water - Shrimp: entree had large shrimp simply prepared. 4 stars - Kids menu: had chicken fingers and spaghetti (note each restaurant on site has different options) - Coffee show: if you get an after dinner coffee version, they light it on fire with a flashy show where you see the glowing liquid pass to your glass. We were excited about eating here and sadly I have to say the service was bad, asked for bread amd water several times and when we did get the bread basket the rolls were hard as a rock and we didn't get the water until we were done. The food was cold, I had the grilled chicken and it was incinerated and cold, my wife had the steak and it was also cold. So disappointed and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

Located inside the Grand Solmar Lands End Resort, this restaurant offers theme night dinners. We joined in on Brazilian night and enjoyed the food and 30 minute show. The food was pretty good except it took a few minutes extra too long. For a family of 4 we expect the food to come a little sooner. I will recommend the whole grilled fish over charcoal! While staying at Grand Solmar, we enjoyed one meal at Don Luis. We went on the "Surf and Turf" night. I will say that the food and setting is wonderful. However, be warned that service is very slow. I normally would not mind the slow service in such an amazing setting, but with a 1 year old and a 3 year old, having a 2.5 hour dinner is not ideal. Don Luis has a great theme going. Each night is a different theme, and you get an appetizer, entree and dessert for the price of your entree. The meat that I received was a little too charred, and the fish was slightly salty. However, it was still good and the flavors were great. My son loved the mac and cheese and they even brought it some vanilla ice cream for dessert while we had the more "fancy" desserts. I really wanted to also try La Roca, but again with children, I don't think that it would have been ideal. Grand Solmar has some great restaurants, which is no see why the "all inclusive" package is $140 pp per day. If we did do the all inclusive option, I definitely would be eating at Don Luis or La Roca each night. I wonder if they allow two dinners per night :-). Last thing to mention is that while Don Luis is "upscale," it is also casual so you can wear resort attire without a problem. Enjoy! read more

The pork shank was very good. 5 stars. It takes a bit of time to get it but they do tell you up front. And what a beautiful place to wait seated in a candlelit patio yards away from the raging surf. The waves pounded against the shore jumping at least 20 feet into the air. Just beautiful. A violinist entertained us until 9 pm adding to the atmosphere. Great waiter - Alexis We were there for Italian night dining with friends. The seafood fettuccini was good. I'd give it 3 stars it was a bit bland and the seafood was just okay but the fettuccini was fresh. My friend enjoyed the grilled shrimp and risotto. I did not taste it so won't rate it. Even with the known wait time the service was very slow. We did not complain because it was a gorgeous place to sit and chat and drink our wine they so carefully decanted. They brought us out a complimentary Cesar salad to share. Nice touch. read more

We came here for dinner and my boyfriend ordered the Alfredo and they had an added +$4 option for chicken of shrimp so my boyfriend asked for both proteins. It tasted like pasta in butter. Then the check came out and they literally charged us THREE twenty-something dollar dishes and when we asked why, they said "that's just how the kitchen works". We asked why no one made this clear to us that we'd be charged one plate for the price of 3 because he ordered an extra three shrimps in his pasta. Aside from asking for a blanket and waiting almost 45 minutes while the people that came after us got their blankets, we were charged almost $60 for just his small plate of chicken and shrimp Alfredo. We expressed our concerns and dissatisfaction to our host and said we would not come back and the host said "okay, thank you". We then talked to the manager and nothing was done. read more

this review is for $20 all you can eat Monday taco night. Great concept! Amazing location! Sadly among the worst tacos I've ever had. For the most part they were unrecognizable smashed together stuff with no flavor. The shrimp tacos were comprised of teeny tiny salty shrimp. The octopus had the texture of corn flakes with clumps. My waiter - excellent service - commiserated with me. He said they were trying something different, and other theme nights were better. I hadn't even made it to the stairway when my stomach demanded an emergency bathroom stop. Upon recovering, I filed a complaint with the concierge a heavy set women in her late thirties. She said that the manager was too busy to hear from me. She said that they just changed the Taco night to Monday, but nobody had complained before. I was dismissed. read more

Don Luis hosted the big Mayweather v Pacquiao event tonight. They had a special drink and snack menu. I wasn't that pleased with my cucumber margarita -- it tasted just like a regular house margarita, the only cucumber flavor was the slice that garnished it. We had a big dinner off site so we did not indulge in snacks. I eventually switched back to my trusty wine. Service was good and glad that they took reservations but the sound quality of the big event was lousy. Overall, very glad we did not have to venture into town to see the main event. read more

Excellent food and service inside of Grand Solmar. Came twice, first time for taco night (the seafood trio tacos are excellent, especially the octopus) and for Italian night. The frutti di mare was so rich and incredibly delicious. Snapper (catch of the day) a tad dry and just alright. The manager is excellent and very hospitable. read more

Don Luis treated us to a fabulous dinner. The food, service & setting was amazing! Highly recommend eating at Don Luis while staying at Grand Solmar. Our service staff, Juan Carlos, Gabriel & Franco and Chef David made our experience over the top. We will most definitely be back on our next stay. My husband & I ordered the grilled seafood for two, the portion size was large and the seafood was cooked perfect; 2 lobster trails, 2 bacon wrapped shrimp, 2 shrimp, a large filet of yellow fin and a small bowl of octopus stew. This entrée was after, appetizers, soup, salad & bread with chile oil. Again it was amazing. Great job everyone! read more

We were actually staying in San Jose and decided on a whim to go down to Los Cabo's and stay one night. So, we jumped on a purple bus and headed south to Playa Grande Resort. Come dinner time, I yelped restaurants within walking distance and decided on Don Luis based on reviews. We are from New Orleans and any given night eating out the bill is 150.00 for average service and food, but you get so much more here for that price. The restaurant is located in the Solmar Resort with an ocean view. You are seated, napkins placed in your lap , menus opened and placed in your hands. There had to be three or four ppl taking care of our two top table. The menu is a pre-fix type . I read each night is a different theme. We were there for surf and turf. The appetizer was pre-fix and you had two choices for soup. Then you could pick your meat and dessert was pre-fix. Everything was fantastic! Steak, scallops and lobster, perfect ! read more

Don Luis is a treasure within Grand Solmar... while the food at Playa Grande is wonderful, it's better here. Don Luis is an outdoor treat that features a different theme most nights of the week. Last night was Grill Night and magnificent lobsters and steaks were on offer and cooked to perfection on a massive grill! Tonight is Italian Night and the following is Argentinian Night and so on... The location is outside by the beach and its a truly heavenly experience to say the least! The place was severely damaged by the hurricane a few years ago but I am proud to say that it has bounced back nicely and is better than ever!!! Don Luis is open to the public but you can enjoy a 15% discount if you are staying next door at Solmar or Playa Grande. Escape the drunken hordes and questionable food in town and sample finer living here by "the rock at the end of the world"! Don Luis will not disappoint... read more
