Upstairs is a nice view of the coast but when you're seated above, you can't order from any of the Puerto Rican dishes (you are limited to the Mexican menu when seated upstairs which is a bummer) they should have made it possible to order from both menus whether you are above or below. read more

On a recent trip to PR, we took the ferry from San Juan over to Cataño. We came specifically for this restaurant because we stopped here almost a decade ago, on our way to the Bacardi Factory. This time around we had the lobster turnover, alcapurria, fried snapper, and bistec encebollado. The appetizers were good, the fried snapper was seasoned nicely but needed a little side sauce (e.g., pepper, garlic) or something, and the bistec looked good. Don Tello used to serve a variety of delicious ethnic Puerto Rican food as late as 2023, but somehow their success has gone to their heads, and service has become sluggish at best. Now on March 2025, admission in an obviously empty restaurant mid afternoon is a challenge. Good luck with that! Count me out. read more

Food was OK. Service was terrible. We waited 2.5 hours for a table of six. People that arrived after us were served. When we complained, they were disrespectful instead of apologetic and fixing the problem. They do change a premium for dishes that are cheaper elsewhere so you expect good service. Don Tello is the first restaurant we encounter after the ferry ride over from San Juan. The top floor was closed so we ate outside. The drinks were fine, but the food was not good. I ordered a burrito and it had no beans, rice, and the cheese arrived unmelted. It did not seem put together with care. The queso fundido arrived stiff and without meat. When we asked for chorizo and for the cheese to be reheated, it was not the chorizo I have ever had before. The meat was some type of hard sausage chopped into square size pieces. I'm sure the Puerto Rican dishes offered at Don Tello were divine and we should have stuck with that. However, the Mexican dishes were less than authentic. read more

Save your money and time. The food was not good and the service slow. I am no stranger to island time, but having to flag the server down three times was a drag. We had to send back our starter because it was missing chorizo and it lacked warmth/heat causing the dip-ability of the queso to be nearly impossible. When the dish resurfaced it was returned microwaved with the addition of what appeared to be a hot dog. Thankfully there was hot sauce at the table so we doctored the fundido up as much as we could. We were served multiple turnovers but they all looked and tasted the same. We were even served and charged for turnovers that we did not order. One in the party took one bite and wanted no more. Cute restaurant located in Cataño near the ferry to Old San Juan. A friend who lives on the island recommended I eat lunch here. When I arrived, it was fairly empty outside and it was a beautiful day so I decided to sit outside. My waiter took my drink order as I reviewed the menu. I ordered the masitas de pollo Al ajillo with rice and tostones. The food was good but nothing super impressive. The drinks were okay too. I was left a but surprised by the bill as it was fairly expensive for what I had and what I am use to paying on the island. We stopped in for a late lunch after our visit to the Bacardi Distillery, and it was packed! Lots of local families were having their Sunday dinner. They found us a table for two and we were seated quickly despite the crowd. We had to wait a bit for a waiter, but once he arrived our orders were taken and we were served quickly. I decided to try the Chuletas Kan-Kan, mostly because I didn't know how it would be and wanted to try something different. My friend had grouper with a garlic sauce. He thought his grouper was outstanding, nice and tender, with good flavor. While I thought the pork was very good, the outer skin was tough and hadn't been fried to that distinct crispness one gets when one orders chicharron. I had a strawberry frappe, my friend elected to have water. We weren't too keen on having more alcohol after consuming rum at the Bacardi Distillery. All in all Don Tello's is a very nice place and is worth visiting. We were surprised to see such a nice place right across from the ferry dock. read more

Don Tello has a lovely cafe to sit outside and enjoy the breeze. We went for lunch as a nearby option before a Bacardi Tour. We ordered mojitos with no sugar- delicious! We had one lobster turnover and one crab with manchego turnover. The hot sauce they make is a must! Next we went for the seafood salad and upgraded the side to tostones. The turnovers were so nice we ordered a second lobster turnover. The crab was just as delicious but a little heavier. The seafood salad was light and full of flavor. We finished our Bacardi factory tour and the staff in bacardi recommended to try a restaurant nearby but was closed. And people driving by were so nice to ask us need any help or not and then recommend us the a local restaurang call dan tello. This place is named after an exceptional human being, very supportive of others, bohemian and with a great sense of humor.  They provide authentic PR and mexico food and the price is so great. What a delicious, Puerto Rican dining experience! I enjoyed the mofonquitos as an appetizer, the paella marinara (comes w/a complimentary glass of wine) and the fabulous Creme Brûlée for dessert. Ms. Jessie and Ms. Debra were excellent! Quite polite and helpful with menu choices. The mofonquitos were crunchy on the outside and filled with delicious pork and onions. The paella was a delightful meal of the sea, boasting shrimp, clams, muscles and other local seafood. The rice was so flavorful and perfectly cooked. The seafood was tender and perfectly seasoned. I must admit... This was THE absolute BEST Creme brûlée I have EVER eaten! Seriously. I would've ordered a second one had the paella not been such a large portion. I'm still reminiscing. read more

I've eaten here several times in the last few years. Don Tello is located across the bay from Old San Juan where the cruise ships dock. After disembarking from your cruise ship, you can hop on a ferry and get off right in front of Don Tello. The food here is of very good quality. The Churrasco steak is excellent! Today, I had the Mofongo Rellenes con Camarones (Mufongo and shrimp in garlic sauce) and it was just as awesome as I remember. The portion is just right - not too filling - not too light. We also had a fried sampler appetizer, which included chicken wings, corn fritters, and jalapeno poppers. All were tasty! The service was pretty good, but not great. The food is worth the wait though. If you're in the area or across the bay, give Don Tello's a shot. Recommend! read more

Took a random exit because we were starving , drove till we hit the water and asked the locals where we could find the best food in town.. Ended up at Don Tello. Nice view of the water and San Juan across the lagoon. The outside bar and patio were clean and open with an amazing breeze that pulls through. As for the food, the grouper was super fresh and gentle, generously portioned and dipped in a cornmeal batter. Exactly what I was expecting, done simply but right. The calamari was the least chewy i've had in my life and the batter was extra crispy and seasoned nicely. $2 beer and my favorite drink in PR .. parcha (passion fruit juice) by the gallon. My wife and I decided to try out this place since our tour guide recommended it. It was a mistake. I wish we had tried somewhere else. The service was terrible. It took nearly an hour to get our food, which was greasy and bland. We drank through our drinks in the first 20 mins and was never asked if we wanted another. So save your time and money! Very delicious. Had the alcapurrias for appetizer and they were perfectly crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The mofongo was well-portioned and perfect flavor with perfect amount of garlic taste. The Chuleta Can Can was delicious. It looks very huge at first, but It was able to eat in one sitting. The meat was perfectly moist and juicy, but the rind on the outside was a difficult chew. The rice that accompanied was amazing. Price was a bit too high, but the service and the portions make it worthwhile. It is somewhat secluded, but it's a good escape from the hustle and bustle of San Juan which is a ferry ride away. read more

Just walked into the restaurant with my husband and son. No one sat us down so we sat and along with the rude looks of customers the staff never came to our table to attend us even with my husband looking at the wait staff. Maybe because my son was crying?
