I heard about this spot from someone who saw it on social media. It's definitely family friendly and reservations aren't necessary. It's one of those restaurants where the people from the neighborhood frequent it very often so all parties know each other well. The staff and the table behind us were exchanging pleasantries, gifts and hugs. Eveb though this was our first time there they treated us really well and addressed all questions. I would come back. Now unto what we ordered, which were a side of meatballs for the table, I got the shrimps over pasta (scampi style over linguine) with salad (you can choose soup or salad to come with your dish). I must say everything was well made. Of course we had to try dessert here, both the amaretto truffle and Italian ices (rainbow flavor) were great choices. I haven't dined inside in years until recently. I do recall, I purchased two food trays about a year ago for a party. It was chicken francese and penne all vodka. Great pricing and it was delicious! The family and I decided to come in for my sisters bday recently. The staff was nice and seated us immediately. The place had a pretty classic Italian look. We ordered several dishes to share. It was all delicious. I asked our waiter if they can bring in a dessert for my sisters bday. They surprised us with adding a candle and singing happy birthday. It was such a nice touch! All in all a good meal. Wednesday night there were two tables taken when we arrived. So the place was mostly empty. Mike our waiter was very pleasant and the two other servers were efficient and friendly. My only complaint is the pasta needs to be al dente. The crab cakes were surprisingly decent, not a ton of bread crumbs and good crab flavor. I would get them again. The meat lasagna was too mushy for my liking and not enough pasta, but the sauce and mozzarella ratio was good. The linguini con vongole was huge with lots of clams, can't go wrong here. The eggplant rollatini was another good size portion for an appetizer and was excellent. The ricotta was blended with spinach and there was a good amount of sauce and mozzarella. I'd get the tiramisu and cannoli again in a a heart beat. Neither were sweet and both were fresh. There's two tv's here so you can eat and watch tv. We took Mommy and Sandy here to try their food. We sat outside in the nice weather. We had to sit outside anyway because we had Sandy. The waiter Patricio was nice enough to give a bowl of water to Sandy. We ordered hot Antipasto, lentil soup, minestrone, seafood pasta, and the Bronzino. Of all the food, the soup and fish were delicious. The seafood pasta was just average. The sauce didn't make it to the top. I was hoping that this place would make great tomato sauce. The fish was delicious, but one thing I wouldn't say I liked when it wasn't broiled but fried. However, Mommy enjoyed it a lot. I did, too but wasn't crazy. Lentil soup and minestrone were excellent! Hot Antipasto was very good. We have to go back and try different dishes to see whether they have other entrees we like from here. The service was excellent! Everybody worked as a team and helped each other. The restaurant has a parking lot at the Steve Madden's building for their guests. We found a parking spot right in front of the restaurant. I was a bit skeptical to order from here after reading some of the reviews but several people from the neighborhood claimed their food was really good. We ordered penne alla vodka with grilled chicken, chicken alla Donato with a side of linguine in garlic and oil and fried calamari. I have to say all dishes were really good and the portions are very generous. The fried calamari was delicious even if it lost a bit of the crispinesses due to being a delivery. The chicken alla Donato was juicy, tender and full of flavor. Now the penne alla vodka was put of this world. Everything we got was really good but this dish was the real winner. Sad to say that I was awfully disappointed today. After reading all the reviews and negative feedback, I wanted to try this place out and experience it for myself. It's safe to say that everyone was right. Service was average. It took the waiter about 5 minutes or so to notice I didn't have a menu, water or bread (bad). He comes up to the table and asks if I need something.. I said "what? Yeah.. a menu". Waiter comes with water and bread, but the bread was cold and not fresh. I ordered two items off the specials menu, a Rib eye and the grilled asparagus. Both ordered to come out at the same time. When the food came out I noticed immediately that my order was missing it's sides. The Rib eye was supposed to come out with "sliced potatoes" and caramelized onions but both were missing. Instead, it came out with overly oily veggies. The waiter disappeared immediately after dropping off my food so I couldn't tell him the order had missing items. Again it took another 3 minutes for someone to notice I needed a waiter. Here I am talking to a third waiter and I told him what happened. He took the dish back. Not even 5 minutes later it comes back with UNDERCOOKED potatoes and onions that were barely caramelized. I ordered the rib eye medium rare and it came out medium well. The grilled asparagus was also oily, salty and almost seemed microwaved. Nothing about it was grilled. The waiter came back and I told him about the potatoes so he gave me a free order of fries. It was an overall upsettingly bad experience. Nothing about this place is Italian.. like, absolutely nothing about Donato's is Italian. It's bizarre frankly. Avoid. read more

Food is terrible and they got a C health rating. Owners aren't nice and the staff and delivery are rude. So many better places to get real pizza a few blocks away. A friend of mine is staying in Sunnyside for a few weeks and I trekked out from Manhattan to have dinner with her on a Saturday night. Donato's was recommended to her by a cab driver who has lived in the area for 15 years so we thought we would give it a try. It was easy to make a 6:30 outdoor reservation that same afternoon. It wasn't crowded when we arrived, but they did good business throughout the night with most of the tables full. The penne vodka was excellent! Well cooked pasta and delicious sauce. My only negative was the chicken was full pieces which was difficult to cut into bite size pieces in a bowl of sauce. The portion was huge, I took half of it home for the next day. Service was slow and a bit messy, we had several dishes and drinks brought to our table by mistake, meant for the table next to ours. We were there for about two hours, about 45 of which was waiting on our check that I think they forgot about. We didn't ask directly for it and were happy chatting, had we been in a rush it might have been harder. But the staff was pleasant. There was also a cool vintage style band playing outside. The live music was a big plus, and I think I heard they play every Saturday night. Overall, I'd come again if I was in the neighborhood, but not worth making the trek regularly. read more

I like this place. Passed by Donato's on a walk through/around Dough Boy park. I was a little surprised to find it; it's on a fairly residential corner of Sunnyside. Seems like a real neighborhood place considering it's surrounded by residential buildings/houses. Came here with a few friends and it was fairly packed. The food is delicious. I honestly dislike going to Italian places. Most are total rubbish, making bland pasta with boring sauce. Most of the time I leave feeling like I could have made the same thing at home. Thankfully, Donato's does not seem to phone it in. All the food we had was pretty great. Anytime I go to a new Italian place, I'll order some spaghetti and meatballs. Sure it's basic, but every Italian place does it -- means I can judge against every other place I've been to. Happy to say that it was great. Not the best meatballs I've ever had, but I thoroughly enjoyed the pasta and sauce. I'm not Italian so I don't call it gravy. Note, the prices aren't cheap. They're not crazy, but it's not pizza place cheap. Also of note, several of the staff wear masks, but well below their nose, which makes for a very uncomfortable situation. This is my new go-to Italian place; I just hope they'll address the mask stuff. It's such a small thing, but it makes a big difference. read more

I've been coming here more often since my last review and finally got to try their pizzas. For one, their pizzas definitely hit the spot, no doubt about it. I can rave about their Margarita Pizza all day because it is probably the most delicious pizza you'll ever have. Garlic knots have kind of fell off in taste, and I don't feel that spark I felt when I was in the 6th grade. I only come here for their pizzas, but the only complain I have about them is how they operate--its odd. I can't really tell if they mostly want to be seen as a restaurant or as a pizza place, but I do think they're a bit smug about their popularity. They hardly sell their pizza by slices. Granted, they're quality pizzas, but if you have a small appetite you're not going to finish a medium pizza pie (which is the case for most of their pizzas, especially the margerita). Also, they're a bit difficult to deal with and they're not exactly very accomodating. Other than their customer service, I enjoy their pizza and it's one of Woodside's secret gems. read more

Took my food to go, too dang cold to be outside. We ordered the Eggplant Parm meal with spaghetti on the side, Veal Parm sandwich and a side of Pepperoni Garlic Knots. The portions were very generous that we had leftovers for the next day. Eggplant Parm was done well, thinly sliced, saucy and a thick layer of mozzarella on top. Delicious! The side of spaghetti was great as well, their marinara sauce was equally as good, not too sweet or sour. Veal Parm sandwich was good but the meat was on the drier side, other than that the sandwich was good, it had enough sauce and cheese. Pepperoni Garlic Knots, those were a miss. It's like two garlic knots in one with one slice of pepperoni inside, I expected more inside but the flavors were there. Also, reading their menu said for marinara sauce is $1 extra, when usually it comes with the knots or there is not extra charge when asked for some. I think it's a bit much when it comes to that but it is what it is. Overall, I think its a good place for a meal with generous portions. Might have to come back for their pizza. read more

I'm a sunnyside girl born and raised, and when I tell you you don't get any better than Donato's. It's just the best of the best, always has been always will be such a staple. Coming back into the neighborhood to meet my mom for dinner and it's just the epitome of coming home. The food is always impeccable, the service consistently friendly and spot on and it's been this way since they day opened for over 20 years now. The pizza is delicious too so don't miss out on that! Outdoor seating is so spacious and comfortable. A nice Italian restaurant located near both Sunnyside and Woodside that gives authentic homemade Italian foods that anyone can enjoy. Elegant dining that's causal enough to bring the whole family. Protected well from COVID-19 to be safe, as well. Huge portions of food made with love put into every dish. But because of Coronavirus, Donado's has to put up tents to substitute their inside part of the restaurant. Due to weather, they also have to take them out and put them back every day which can get annoying hearing the banging every now and then while you're eating. This problem won't last forever though since COVID won't last forever (hopefully). So otherwise, it pretty much gets five stars. read more
