Our group was a pretty big party, but we called ahead of time to make reservations. It took them ages to take our order and for the food to come. My friends who came first actually ended up never getting their food, and we all received our orders after more than an hour. I could see that other tables seated after us got their orders before us and even finished eating before we even started. Staff were really slow, so of course, we made a complaint to management. They gave us a discount, which is thoughtful, but I've never waited such a long time for food to come out. We asked the staff multiple times about our meals, and they had kept saying it was coming. Prior to going to a show, a couple of friends and I stopped for a bite to eat locally. Found this place on Yelp and since it was steps away from the venue, we decided to dip in. The staff seated us quickly. Yet literally no other patron in the place other than one man eating a slice. Staff were friendly and kind. We ordered pizza and a Caprese salad. One friend had an eggplant pizza, another a meat one and I had a Margherita. The pizza was good, I just wish it was hot. My friends eggplant pizza came with ricotta instead of mozzarella & she sent it back to get mozzarella on it but they only added it on top of the ricotta. She doesn't mind ricotta but not necessarily on her pizza. I am not a fan of ricotta at all, so I would've been deeply unhappy. The Caprese salad was delicious but we were looking for lettuce to be added with it. There was none. The atmosphere of the place was chill, more like upscale casual dining. We were in the neighborhood and wanted to try out some good brick oven pizza. We weren't going too crazy just a little meal before meeting up with friends. We had the arugula and Gorgonzola salad which had a great dressing and plenty of cheese with candied walnuts. We ordered the margarita salad and the eggplant which had a nice chewy crust with a crispy outside. The red sauce has great flavor. Cooked to perfection and very flavorful. For pizza now we got a margarita pie, Gabriel pie which was like homemade meatballs n onions and we got another pie that had bacon on it with onions. All 3 pizza's were amazing and I'm very happy I switched it up and tried a new brick oven spot. This spot is right of the N line of Astoria Blvd and easy accessible via train. I highly recommend this place if your looking for brick oven or even to try s new place. Astoria has their fair share of places, but a lot are nothing special. I had high hopes but felt the meal and service could have been better - For starters we got the calamari (which was well cooked but lacked any zucchini and had fried carrots in the mix? Interesting combo, would have preferred sweet potato strings over carrots. Linguine + white clam sauce looked better than it tasted. I tasted more olive oil over anything else. I went for dinner by myself and ordered the vodka pasta which took probably about an hour to come out. We have been ordering from Basil pretty consistently for the past few years as one of our go-to neighborhood pizza delivery spots. I was glad we finally checked them out in person recently, as the food was even better there. It was a real treat to sit outside in the nice little sidewalk area on a balmy October night, which was probably one of the last warm nights of the year. We started off with the Toscana salad (Fresh Baby Arugula, Caramelized Walnuts, Lemon, Gorgonzola Cheese, Extra Virgin Olive Oil). It's an excellent salad if you want something flavorful, yet light and simple. It's citrusy (lemon), sweet (walnuts), and pungent (cheese). The brick oven-baked margherita pizza (Tomato Sauce, Homemade Fresh Mozzarella, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Basil) is also both simple and excellent. The crust is incredibly fresh and fluffy, yet crisp. The sauce is perfectly sweet and tangy. The mozz stands up to anything coming out of Campania. I really think it's underrated. Where could Basil improve? They don't have a great selection of wines by the glass beyond the $10-$11 price point. And what they did have available was lacking in quality. read more

But this was the best crust I've had so far. I'm not quite sure which pizza this is since they put pepperoni on both of my pizza's when I only ordered one pizza with pepperoni and the other was supposed to be plain, but it was a win win! Expect big bubbles on the dough to be burnt black - I like and appreciate the boldness; carcinogenicity be damned. We had the Basil and capricciosa pizzas. Both were slightly undersalted, but still tasty. They offer gluten-free versions of their pastas and pizzas, which to me makes this place group-friendly. The tiramisu was nice, but I liked the cheesecake even more. It was ricotta-based instead of cream cheese-based, which means it was neither too sweet nor too indulgent, but still had the satisfying density and heft that one expects when one orders a solid slab of baked cheese to close out a meal. Service was attentive, with friendly multilingual banter, water glasses constantly filled, and birthday songs merrily sung. When we arrived around 6:30pm they had a decent crowd but was seated right away. It's a very cozy set up. Our waitress was extremely helpful and friendly. After a long day of moving to my new apartment with the help of my friends and boyfriend, I ordered a half tray of food for the clams linguini and bolognese fettuccini, mussels, large margarita pizza and diavola pizza. Wonderful Italian transplant who knows what he is doing and is passionate about the art of making pizza. If you want a typical New York slice, this is not the place to go. Basil does not sell slices. Nope, you read right. NO slices. You need to either come in and sit and wait for your freshly made to order creation in the back dining area or wait in the front to take your pie to go. Chef Daniele makes has over 40 Neapolitan pies available for his customers and every one of them is just as delicious as the next. You want purist? Go simple. You want toppings galore? Go crazy. There is a pie for every little boy and girl to choose from. The Carbonara so far is my absolute favorite (Tomato Sauce, Homemade Fresh Mozzarella, Bacon, Egg Yolk, Heavy Cream, Parmigiano Reggiano, Black Pepper and Extra Virgin olive oil) ESPECIALLY when sopressata is added on.
