I am really surprised to find this restaurant kind of in the middle of nowhere part of San Jose. I have been craving for razor clam for a very long time. It is the perfect place to have it. I have backpacked in southern Vietnam for a month and these dishes brought me back instantly. Next time I will bring a large group to try out different things.

This place used to be fantastic! Everyone and their mom knows about this place and how delicious it was. You could come here if you wanted authentic Vietnamese food but lately something has changed. Our gởi bà khia came out extremely salt and foul tasting. It's like they were serving spoiled food. The mango were supplemented with papaya or another vegetable that smelled foul and the amount of salt was enough to send someone into hypertension. The canh chua ca, and the chicken were both raw. Which makes me wonder what their kitchen looks like. The male staff were throwing dishes into the cart so hard it sounded like they wanted to fight not to mention they were using profanities like "du má" every other sentence. They still charged us for all their mistakes. We will never come back and we will make sure to warn the community about this place. It's absolutely not family friend or sanitary. Please check the pictures. I hope they know a lady lost all her limbs last year because of under cooked tilapia. This is a hazardous situation.

Dong Que is always poppin' with lots of locals visiting. The food is super authentic and very delicious. The service is attentive. It's easy to order a bunch of dishes because everything looks so good, and the bill can add up quick, so pace yourself!

Service was quick, food was so good. This is a great spot if you are looking for street style Vietnamese food.

Fake phony customer service . Was waited on once ,,, Served and left to dry ,,, Never asked if my guest and I needed anything... The food looks nice but the taste is BLAND , Full of what seem like msg saturation. My guest and I walked away with indigestion !!! The place sucks !!!!

Continues to have the best snails and clams around. Our favorite spot everytime we roll into town here. Great staff and service. Never disappoints.

ABSOLUTELY DREADFUL SERVICE AND COMPLETE NEGLECT - AVOID (Đông Quê Restaurant, San Jose) Rating: (1/5 Stars) Restaurant: Đông Quê Restaurant Address: 2852 Alum Rock Ave, San Jose, CA 95127 Date of Visit: November 16, 2025 at 4:45 PM Party Size: 10 (Disabled Group) I wish I could review the food, but the truly abysmal service and disrespectful treatment of our party overshadowed any potential enjoyment of the meal. This was the worst dining experience I've ever had here, and I will never return. Specific Failures in Service and Courtesy 1. Flagrant Neglect of Disabled Guests at Check-in: Upon arrival, I approached the check-in area to notify staff we were here (a party of 10, including several disabled individuals). Even after I asked multiple young male waiters passing by to check us in or offer help, they didn't answer and didn't stop. To be completely ignored when requesting basic assistance is unacceptable and disrespectful. 2. Unfriendly, Dismissive, and Yelling: The waiter's communication with our party was incredibly unprofessional. They spoke to us in a loud, inappropriate tone, which made our experience very uncomfortable, and often sighed loudly. The situation peaked when we simply asked for a to-go box; the waiter yelled at us with such loud sounds that it was startling. This dismissive and aggressive behavior is entirely unacceptable in a service environment. Conclusion: A Feeling of Discrimination This was a fundamental service breakdown that moved beyond poor hospitality into sheer neglect. The failure of multiple staff members to assist a disabled group requesting check-in, coupled with the waiter's later unprofessional and aggressive conduct at the table, is truly shocking. Given the staff's clear reluctance to serve and assist us, it gave our entire group the distinct and unsettling feeling that they did not want to serve disabled people and that we were being discriminated against. A restaurant should value all its patrons and offer attentive, respectful service; it is clear this establishment does not. I strongly advise dining elsewhere until management addresses this severe failure in training and customer courtesy.

I gave this place two more chances. 1. Went at noon for lunch with Vietnamese friends on a weekday. The place was pretty empty maybe 1/8 full, the food was awesome. Everything tasted great. The Oc was well seasoned and buttery. Service was acceptable. 2. Went for dinner on a Sunday night with non Vietnamese friends, the place was packed. The Oc was tasteless, dry and not fresh. Waiter got 1 of 4 orders wrong. The waiters don't speak English well enough to know for me to know if they understood they got the order wrong, tried to take back two dishes instead of just the wrong one. I had to get up to find an English speaking waiter to confirm they understood the issue. The replacement came was not only tasteless but burnt. Did they use high heat to rush the order?? Don't do that! Not sure if you have to come with Vietnamese speaking friends to get decent food. I'm going to say it's a hit or miss and leave it at that.

Super authentic Vietnamese restaurant. I loved seeing the wide range of demographic come through here. You got the aunties in here along with the younger crowd celebrating birthdays. So you know the food was going to be good seeing all the different age groups here. The food was delicious. The things I would order again are the banana blossom chicken salad (favorite dish), canh chua, oysters and snails. The banana blossom salad was incredible. It was super light and came with an oniony taste to it. Loved it a lot. The oysters were also delicious. It reminded me of what I had in Danang. I would pass on the chicken wings. They are kinda small and not worth the price. The shrimp was okay; once you get pass the shell, the inside was unseasoned. Service was decent. It gets very packed and you have to call out to get their attention. Don't be shy! They are hustling hard and you gotta use your voice or hand gestures to get what you need !

We came on a weekday evening and it was pretty crowded. We got canh mong toi, muop, cua dong; Goi Bao Tu Leoi Heo, Ca Com Trung Chien Gion Mam Me, and Oc Len Xao Dua. Food was good, and I would definitely come back to try the other dishes. They have a parking lot, but it's very small. We usually have to wait around to get a parking spot. Service is ok: you need to call someone to get their attention, and may wait a bit to be seated.

The banh khot was warm and crunchy. I love when you can taste hints of coconut and when the garlic is suuuper strong lol The garlic noodles were alright tbh. The noodles were a little hard but the shrimp was cooked perfectly! They're definitely meant to be more of a takeout spot. They were pushing out party trays like crayyyy when we were there. Mixing it with the noodles, herbs, and peanuts made for a great combination of textures and flavors. Despite it being in a big lot, parking still took a while to find. Thankfully, we had thankfully just beat the lunch rush and not had to wait longer than 10 minutes for a table. My friend and I shared a Northern spread (Bun Cha Ha Noi) and a Southern style Goat Curry (Banh Mi Cari De). Service was definitely on the slower side that day, but thankfully we were proactive at getting the orders in. The Bun Cha Ha Noi was delicious - pretty much a DIY spring roll - all the fun, all the mess, with none of the clean up other than licking the plates clean. The pork belly was delicious; I was surprised how much I liked it, since I'm not a fan of pork. I devoured numerous rolls, and we also had some extra vermicelli to finish off the rest of the protein. This single meal was definitely more than enough for two! The Banh Mi Cari De (goat curry) was unfortunately quite the opposite. The goat was cooked very well - tough, gamy, and difficult to eat. There were probably six pieces in total, our first was tender, our second had bone, a little harder to chew, and the last was best compared to rubber. The curry was a bit watery, which made the banh mi soggy when dipped in. This was probably an adventurous try, but not a dish I'd ever consider ordering again.

It's a grilled tumeric fish dish that packs a ton of flavor, and you add noodles and herbs to make a delish spring roll (or in my case a fat burrito). It comes out on a sizzling plate so you have to let it cook a bit to render the onions and dill to get that perfect texture. Tip: on Wednesdays, this dish is only $28, whereas the OG price is around $36. The fried rice here was surprisingly super flavorful! You can taste the separate grains (which is when you know the cook on the rice is good) and the salt levels were top tier. If you can't find parking in that plaza, there's more parking across the road where the Target is. After spending about ten minutes on the written wait-list, our names were called. It's definitely a little easier communicating with much of the staff if you speak Vietnamese, and I find that waiting right outside the restaurant is best because they default to calling your name from the door once it's your turn. The interior is crammed with tables; the atmosphere feels busy and warm. There is a single room women's bathroom and men's bathroom in the back as well. The decor leans toward being classic more than trendy, which I liked. The menu is pretty big, offering a variety of items ranging from mainstream Vietnamese options to ones I don't encounter as often. I recommend eating family-style for many of these dishes, including the Bún Chả Cá Lã Vọng, which I enjoyed with my partner. The prices are pretty average, and their portions are generous. That said, they are cash or Zelle only. There is an ATM that you can use if you forget to bring cash, but this is still something to keep in mind. Overall, I can definitely see myself coming back. The standout dish was the egg rolls. They arrived hot, golden brown, and perfectly crisp, with a satisfying crunch and a flavorful filling that made them the best part of the meal. The food, however, wasn't the reason for my rating. The restaurant's cleanliness left me concerned. I noticed cobwebs that appeared to have been hanging in place for a long time, along with dirt and grime collecting in corners throughout the dining room. Even the menus felt sticky, with a visible film of grease and small food particles still clinging to them. The faded print and worn condition made them look as though they hadn't been replaced in years. Those details created an impression of neglect that made it difficult to relax and enjoy the meal. With a thorough deep cleaning and some updated menus, this restaurant could create a much more welcoming dining experience. Until then, the cleanliness issues overshadow what was otherwise an average meal.
