By far the worst dine-in experience I've ever had at any restaurant on the island. First off, when I walked in, I asked to dine in and took a seat in one of their booths. I was then told that I needed to order at the counter. At the time, I didn't think anything of it, so I placed my order and went back to my seat. Shortly after, I was told that I needed to pay. I explained again that I was dining in, but the cashier continued to tell me that I had to pay first. Since it was my first time at Dong Yangs, I just assumed that was how they did things. I received their complimentary soup that comes with their dine-in plates. Personally, I wasn't a fan of it. It tasted very salty and didn't have much flavor beyond the salt. It did come with silverware, so I assumed everything else would be provided normally. When my meal came out, however, it wasn't served on a plate. It came in a takeout container. Again, since it was my first time there, I assumed that was just how they served their food. I was told I ordered a regular Meat Jun plate and not a mini, which I was completely fine with. But when I opened the container, the portion looked more like a mini than a regular plate. There was only one layer of Meat Jun over what looked like four scoops of rice. The sides were disappointing, and the service wasn't much better. No water refill, no condiments, and no real check-in from the staff. The atmosphere was also extremely dead, which didn't help the overall experience. The Meat Jun itself was actually pretty good which I wa told is what they are known for, and I'll give them credit for that. But for a regular Meat Jun plate costing close to $20, I expected a much better portion. I received exactly 15 small pieces, and they weren't the traditional strips of Meat Jun I'm used to getting. Instead, they were small squares, roughly 1 inch by 1 inch. Overall, this was easily my worst dining experience on the island. The food had some potential, especially the Meat Jun, but the portion size, sides, service, and overall experience just weren't worth the price. One thing that really stood out to me and I couldn't believe was that the complimentary soup came with actual silverware, while my regular meal was served in a takeout container with a plastic fork. I honestly didn't understand that. Unfortunately, they won't be getting my business again, and I wouldn't recommend this place based on my experience. read more

I went to Dong Yang Inn on a recommendation and I was not disappointed. This is an old school plate lunch establishment that has decent prices and is generous with portions. There are a few eateries - often outside of the downtown corridor - that still are a good bargain. I ordered the #16, the two portion combo plate. I chose the spicy pork amd meat jun. The meat jun was different in offering a thicker slice of beef than most meat juns. Decently seasoned... you don't really need the dipping sauce. Spicy pork was a bit salty and not too hot. Many plate lunches offer too much rice but this was... if anything...a but light on the rice. Banchan included bean sprouts, cabbage, and kim chee. We came here a couple of days ago when we were in the area, and we've heard great reviews about them especially their meat jun and fish jun. We didn't try the meat jun at the time, but the fish jun was fantastic. It had a nice crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. It didn't feel dry and there was a food portion. We also got the bibimbap and again, the portions were great! The sides complimented everything nicely. It was only our kiddos and my friend so service was pretty fast. There was parking in the front, and it seems like there's parking behind the building as well. The restaurant has an old school feel to it. Bathrooms are located behind the building. Quick and easy. The most efficient phone order when you call. Aunty is straight to the point. Meat Chun plate. It is loaded with rice, veggie sides, and a mountain of meat chun. This is what all lunch plates used to look like when I was growing up. Dong Yann Inn is one of the few places left that still has generous portions with reasonable prices. The thick marinated cuts of beef is gently blanketed by an egg batter that is slightly sweet. Perfect combination. Can't go wrong with the BBQ chicken plate either. Each plate comes with choke rice and sides of kimchee, cucumber, and bean sprouts. The kimchee is mild in spice. But don't worry the red sauce they provide with the meat Jun provides that extra umppph flavor profile. It's meant for the meat chun, but I dip the kim chee in it too. Hahaha. There is parking in the front and back of the restaurant. I've only taken take out because the food is soooo good I prefer to pound my plate in the privacy of my home. No need anyone judging me for inhaling my food faster than the speed of light. Or in this case the speed of the phone orders here. The portions are definitely shareable. Took my wife to Dong Yang after telling her how good their meat jun is, and they did not disappoint! Thick cut, generous portions, lots of banchan in the plate! I had the spicy pork and it was the best I've ever eaten...spicy marinade, grilled with some char, plenty of meat! Food came out fast and hot, also came with a bowl of simple broth since we ate there. Roomy restaurant, tables and old style booths, parking in front and side lot. Did a takeout order for a small party pan of Meat Jun ($75) and two side orders of Chopchae ($17.75 each). I added a photo of the receipt and order so you can get an idea of the portion size. Both dishes were tasty and generous -- definitely worth it for the price. This was my first time trying their version of Chopchae, which had meat and no sesame seeds. It was a little different from what I'm used to, but still flavorful and good. I called in my order a little after noon for a 3:00 PM pickup, and everything was ready right on time. We parked in front since we weren't sure if there was parking in the back. We tried to park right in front of the restaurant, but there was a car blocking access, so we ended up parking near the smoke shop and hot pot restaurant instead. I was craving for some meat jun and heard this place out in Wahiawa was a good place to check out. There's a parking lot in the back and some street parking. It won't wow you from the outside but the treasure is from within. There's plenty of inside seating but I chose to take out. They serve all your Korean food favorites. The inside doesnt have much to brag about. Its outdated and looks like your uncle's rec room from the 80s, but good ting you're not here for HGTV aesthetics, you're here for good food so here goes... If you're looking for the best kimchee and fried mandu on the whole island, stop scrolling and just drive here now! The fried mandu is crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. I'm pretty sure they keep the secret recipe locked in a vault guarded by aunties with slippers because theyve reveived awards for it and ive never had mandu like this one. Its sooo good that i drive all the way from town in rush hour traffic.... and not much makes me want to do that. The kalbi is a little smaller and has more gristle than id like for the price but thats life in hawaii I suppose. Id expect a little more kalbi in ounces, especially when ordering just the kalbi plate by itself. At least the mixed plate gives a little extra meat to fill up on. Still, no complaints on taste. They also have a fridge filled with extra sides like cucumber, kimchee, potato salad, drinks etc that you can choose from. Ive never been disappointed by any of their sides. Portions are so big, no polynesian will leave here hungry. Prices are fair, and you'll leave with leftovers. Just dont mind the houseless unk that sleeps on the sidewalk by the entrance. To preface this place was formerly my friends grandmas place before they sold and idk what happened since I last saw him freshman year but geez things have gone downhill. While the place has overall stayed the same along with the types of seasonings for the meat jun but a lot has been lacking since. For example the portions are halved at best with meat jun specifically being a lot of batter than normal at points. Oh maaan, the meat jun just hits different here. It's so good. Usually I'm used to thin slices of meat, but Dong Yang really hooks you up. The thick slices of meat covered with egg just makes for the perfect lunch plate. Ordering was easy, just called it in and picked it up. The bell sprouts and the kimchee sides are alright. Meat jun show down. I've ordered from here twice now. First time they were amazing. Thought we found our new go-to spot for meat jun. 2nd time picked up there were all stringy bits and hard inedible bites here and there. Flavor is Hella up there. Doesn't even need sauce IMO. But the inconsistency got me sus. I love businesses that can do things really well for one. The part of customer retention is the consistency that is key. I am an in the box person but also on the fence. Cross me once and I remember it forever. I haven't completely written off this spot but the last order got me high up on that fence. I will eventually have to order here again when my new number one is closed or I don't wanna drive out that way. I'm really wanting to latch onto this restaurant but it will be a while until I can see if the quality will be better next time around. Parking right out front but I can see how it might be a bit complicated with limited stalls shared for the building. Street parking is limited as well. Looks pretty spacious and decent inside. Dong Yang's is my wife's fave, so I'll give them 3 stars lol. I personally prefer Kimchee 7 in Aiea, but I recently got to try the Kalbi and it was pretty tasty. My wife's fave is the "Meat Chun" plate. Gotta give it to Dong Yang's.. the meat is pretty thick and they serve a nice portion for $17. Banchan included with the plates are cucumber, bean sprouts, cabbage, and kimchi. These, as well as the sauce, all have their own flavors that I feel are good identifiable aspects of this restaurant. My plate was the Kalbi & Shrimp Temp for $26. Downside was that the shrimp is served with the same shoyu vinegar Meat Chun sauce which is not my thing. The tempura batter was undercooked in the middle of the big clump around the shrimp, so it is definitely not an option I'd recommend. Kalbi was thick and flavorful tho! Service is the same each time you go there - turn and burn, quick order, not very personable, take-out style, "NEXT!" The restaurant is long overdue for an update, but for most of the diners here, it serves its purpose. read more

This is hands down the best meat Jun you will ever have. Combination soup is delicious and will.feed you for 2 days. When I take it home and put it in the fridge overnight, the broth gels so I know its a rich bone broth and is so very tasty. As a local, you have your favorites or preferred spots, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. This place, is THE SPOT for meat jun. The dish evidently made popular in Hawaii. Much like how chantilly cake is a Hawaii thing. The tender thin slice of marinated beef dipped in egg and pan fried. Served with its own sauce like sweet chili an shoyu. Unlike anywhere else with meat jun, you'll find Dong Yang provides ]the most portions, thiccest, and I mean thicc, cuts of beef (as far as meat jun goes) and lightly flavored egg laid on a hefty bed of white rice and packed with your usual Korean bbq sides of bean sprouts, cabbage, cucumbers and kimchi. We've gone out of our way a few times to make the trek out to Wahiawa for this. Maybe you can too. read more

This place I good depending what you're eating. If you're eating a plate it's great, if you're eating mandoo in soup not so great. Because of the way it's set up, you order, you pay, you sit down at a booth, then the food is brought out to your table in take out containers. This makes eating a soupy meal that is separated by broth only in one container and the noodles and mandoo in another container not the most convenient. If we knew the set up was like this I wouldn't have ordered a soupy dish for my mother. My food was tasty and enjoyable, I had the BBQ pork, but my mom's experience wasn't so good. I was quite sure that I wouldn't be able to find anyone to go with me, so, I made a plan to bring a tray of Meat Jun to mom's house for Mother's Day and get everyone's opinion... I called the day before and placed a takeout order for a small pan of Meat Jun. On Mother's Day, I made the half hour drive to Wahiaha. There was an open parking space in front of the shop - yay! I walked in to an old school type of environment. There was a line in front of the friendly, efficient cashier. Everyone orders, pays and picks up here. If you want to dine here, seat yourself! Since I was here, I thought that I should try some of everything. I got the Dong Yang Inn Special: Two Mandoo - very good! Shrimp - thick batter was raw on the inside BBQ meat - tasty! BBQ chicken - okay Meat Jun - not bad! Kalbi - disappointing Fish jun - alright It came with white rice, kimchi, bean sprouts, cucumber, and shredded cabbage in another container. Whoa! Yes! Two containers! I'll be eating this for the next few meals! Later, I brought the tray of Meat Jun to mom's house. Everyone liked the thicker cut of meat. The thin egg wash is nice and not oily! On a recent Saturday adventures with my other half, the plan was to go to our usual shrimp spot for lunch and continue with our around island adventures. Well that changed. The other half loves meat jun and mentioned it while we passed by Dong Yang, well I was having doubt since my last bad experience 7 years ago. I gave in and Saturday plans officially changed. Dong Yan Inn is still the same, old restaurant, the same mom and pop except with new owners ( 2nd one since the original owners) prices sure changed too, which is typical, and now it is a self service restaurant. Order at counter and you can either take it to go or utilize the tables. I got the 2 item combo plate, spicy BBQ chicken and meat jun. The price for this plate $18.75 plus tax. Sauce is .30 cent extra for small. The bag as I carried to the car was heavy and they do pack on the portions. The plate was more than enough for 2 and the verdict, the other half was happy and enjoyed his meat jun. He mentioned it was still good despite new owners. The spicy bbq chicken was on the dry side but I enjoyed it, just the rice was watery, which I dislike. The banchan was good! All in all, the other half got his meat jun fix and HAPPY, we can save the around the island plans for next month. I will be back, if the other half wants to eat meat jun again!
