I've been wanting to write this review for a while because Mauricio is the greatest and others need to know it. My male cousins have been going to him and are always happy with his work. He does a great job!!!!! A little secret about Mauricio is that he's not only a barber, he's a great hairstylist for us gals :-D. He's been doing my hair for years as well. Came back a few weeks ago. As it turns out, Leslie has moved out and down the street by a few blocks (at Berkeley Barbers). BUT DON'T STOP READING YET! I decided to make an appointment with Don anyways, and I'm glad I did. Got my haircut by Don, the one and only. We chatted a bit and he gave me some recommendations of local restaurants/bars to try. Not an uncomfortable guy to talk to, very low pressure and friendly conversation (I never once felt the conversation was forced). Overall it was a very good experience, and I think this haircut turned out even better than my last one here. Fantastic barber shop! Brenda, Don, and Mauricio are all especially great. Brenda is my go-to hairdresser. I've gone to her for the past three years and I can always rely on her for a high-quality, personalized, and speedy cut. She used to work at a shop closer to me, but I'm willing to make the trip to this location to see her! She's also very friendly and a good conversationalist. I've never gotten haircuts from Don or Mauricio, but I've seen them both around the shop. They're both very warm and welcoming, and are often willing to join in on the conversation when they're not busy with their own clients. The shop itself is in a great location. The outside is pretty low-profile, but there's plenty of free parking behind and next-to the shop, food spots nearby, and a fantastic hobby shop next door (fun place to peruse before an appointment!). read more

Needed some serious attitude in a hurry, read yelp reviews and here I am, writing a one--something I don't do very often. After reading a LOT of the reviews for Don's, I decided Scott was the guy. I wanted someone who could barber and cut in an edgy way. The name of the shop is Don's Cutting Edge, after all! Scott was totally cool, serious and super competent with the cut while being laid back, great to talk with, and he totally got what I wanted. I was able to call in the morning and get in at 2:00 pm. Oh, and there's PARKING!!! I love barber shops--they're not about the hype and expense of salons. However, it's not that easy to find someone who can do it all at a barber's. My friends would tell you that I'm a total control freak about quality and I can honestly say, I'll be one of Scott's regulars! read more

Excellent first experience with this shop. I have very thick, curly hair and a lot of places seem to have trouble cutting it. Not this place. I came in (without calling ahead for an appointment and he was still kind enough to fit me in) and gave him a general idea of what I like when I have my hair cut and he took it from there, but kept me involved as he cut to make sure he wasn't about to do something I might hate. Very pleased with the results. On top of a great cut for a great price ($25 for shampoo, cut and massage!), you also get good conversation; a rarity in my experience in Los Angeles. I only trust my hair with one person...his name is Mauricio. I've been going to him for a year now. Before that, I went all over the westside. Gone to Tel's, Berkeley and a few other barbershops until I finally found my man. I have thick and straight Asian hair. If the cut is improper, than I get a weird fro going on. No gel will tame the beast. I just look messy until my hair grows out. I've tried a few iterations in style and Mauricio can translate the description of my cut into reality. He takes his time. Usually he will do an initial cut, wash my hair, and finish it off. I've never been disappointed. Can't go wrong with any barber in this place. No frills, just in-and-out with a perfect cut. read more

This place is rad. Don is a chill older dude who looks more to me like an experienced bar fighter than a hair stylist, but he certainly doesn't carry an aggressive attitude. The conversation is interesting and flows the whole time. I'm a complete stupid-face when it comes to telling a barber what I want, but I was able to describe to him what I like and the guy nailed it, AND was able to explain it very easily so we could replicate it in future visits. The best part: he shaves your burns and neck with a straight blade. Old school and kick ass, and the massage is awesome too. All for 25 bucks? Crazy delicious! There's parking behind the building, just go down Yale and take the first alley you see, and make sure to bring cash since he doesn't take credit cards. That's the only complaint you could have about this place. That and getting too many compliments from folks at work about your haircut. read more

Went to this place because of the great reviews. Got Mauricio. Nice guy, but did not at all listen to what I wanted. I brought a picture, too, just to cut down on the guesswork. But what I got was not at all what I wanted. In fact, it was the same kind of boy's regular haircut I got when I was a kid - the EXACT OPPOSITE of what I wanted. Went to BRENDA for my beard line up. The owner told me she is the best for a beard line up. She was absolutely the worst barber I have ever had. She used techniques that I have never seen, and it was evident that it was one of her first times doing any work on a beard. I DO NOT recommend Brenda. I have not tried any other barbers there so I can not give an honest review for anyone else at Don's. Stay away from BRENDA- she will mess up your beard!!! read more

I wanted to give Don's the five star treatment like so many others have. I've gotten my haircut there three times now. The first two were by Don and his female employee, respectively. The last time I went, I got a cut by a guy I hadn't seen before. I can't remember his name but he's skinny with floppity hair. And he butchered my head. Two weeks later and I still look in the mirror cursing this ham-fisted excuse for a barber. So if you get Don or the girl (forgot her name too. Really only remember Don's name because it's on the sign...), it's a four to five star haircut. If you get this other hack, it's a one and a half. read more

Upon walking in as a newcomer, I was treated with disrespect for not having an appointment. One younger barber alluded to me being irresponsible and careless, but that might have just been because I'm a young Hispanic. They refused my business without an appointment, and by the looks of the cut they were doing at the time it seems that I lucked out. I was looking for a guy's barber where you walk in and get a cut, not an arrogant stylist. I was very happy to see that Don's decided to work with my haircutter Brenda. Since I moved to LA over 2.5 years ago, I've followed Brenda wherever she went. Besides having an immense amount of skill and intuition, it's always a joy catching up with her. Brenda's positivity is rare and makes sitting in the chair a true pleasure. She is capable of recalling any previous cuts, and is capable of taking what she sees in one picture and applying it to you. A few months ago, I went in with an old picture of River Phoenix and she was able to give me his notorious hairstyle without any difficulty. Anyone in need of that go-to hair stylist, he or she should absolutely go to Don's and request her. Brenda is the best! read more

Although I have used yelp quite a bit, this is my first post and for a great reason. First and foremost this review is not about the owner Don but his associate (guy with haircut from '70s...Think Peter Tork-Monkee's). The situation was that I needed an "emergency" haircut (I had a dinner meeting) and my regular stylist had been booked past 2 weeks...damn you Charlie. I was at UCLA and knew that I was going to have several hours to kill before my meeting so I assumed that I could find somewhere to give me a simple trim to get me by until I could see my regular guy. Now don't get me wrong, I am not super anal about my hair but I'm not one that goes to supercuts either. The first sign that this was going to be WRONG was the fact that he was trying to comb through the existing gel that I already had; not only did it hurt but most places usually wash prior to the cut. I asked him to wash out the gel rather than brush through it; possibly pulling out most of the hair I was there to get trimmed. So he did (he seemed like a nice guy)....once he made his first cut I knew it was over...I could have had my daughter give me a better trim and she is only 2. The previous reviewers comment of: "ham-fisted excuse for a barber"....absolutely perfect explaination. You could just tell by his movements that "attention to detail" was not his forte! In the end, it looked like a pack of rats chewed on my hair. I think that a haircut from the marines/prison might be better....no it definetely would be since I would not have to pay for it. I almost just asked him to shave my head but resisted bc I thought he might screw something like that up too. Again I really did not want my first post on yelp to be of this nature...I'd much rather prefer to write about the dinner at Jirafe (great) afterwards but I need to warn others. If you ever get a cut a Dons and see this guy coming towards you with scissors RUN! The sucky thing about all of this is that Don was there and did not even have a client. He said that I needed to see his associate and that he only saw his regulars. Don I know you know better and just seeing you doing your crossword while this guy was "driving without a license" was simply SO WRONG. Well Don, I don't know how you cut hair but it has got to be better than the Monkee guy. I also don't know if this was some sick initiation to become a "regular" at your establishment but it's a bad business move because you will never see me there again. BTW I am getting an another haircut today bc I do not want to walk around for a month looking like I've been attacked by wild shears! After about 10 years of buzzing my own hair I wanted something new. I made a same-day appointment on a Saturday; luckily they weren't busy or I might have tried someplace else! When I got there Scott asked me what I was looking for and told him that I was tired of the same #5 buzz cut that I've had since I was a teenager, and that I was looking for a more adult and classic cut. Scott didn't need anything other than that. My hair wasn't too long, since I had last buzzed it about two months priors, so he didn't have a lot to work with. Scott was about to get started and I nervously asked "...so what ARE you going to do?" He chuckled and said "I'm going to make it look good, trust me." He was right. I got a handsome classic cut that's going to grow in nicely. This is the first time a haircut has made me feel like an adult instead of an old teenager. Each time I go there I get a better cut and have a better experience than most high-end salons. It's got the barbershop set-up but don't worry they can do more than the standard barbershop cut (short and shorter). I've lived in LA for over 6 years and have never bothered to go back to the same place more than once. I'm a regular now. My first time at Don's was a great experience: I walked in on Saturday early morning asking for haircut, and he agreed to take me in before his first scheduled appointment which was supposed to be in 30-40 min, so we had enough time. Don is a great guy: very laid-back and friendly and accommodating! He cut my hair the way I expected and it was not an issue to pay a little more (35) then in some other places I've been before. I have sent my boyfriend to the same place recently and he was scheduled with a new guy working for Don, I think his name is Scott. My boyfriend got a very different haircut from what he used to have before, but I really liked it. He told me Scott was very open and talkative and he enjoyed his company. Therefore I decided to give it a shot and see Scott when the time came to have my hair done again. I called and deliberately scheduled the appointment with Scott instead of seeing Don again. Scott seemed to be as my boyfriend described and we had a nice small talked while he was cutting my hair. It took him almost 50 min (in comparison to Don's 30-35) and although I told him not to waste time on perfecting the shape of my hair (because I planned to hop on a bike and wear a helmet right after the haircut ), he kept drying and fixing my hair for around 10 min. Eventually, I gave me the mirror so I could see all around that he layered my hair and that they gonna look good in a pony tale. OK When I was about to take off and pay, I asked how much does he charge for a haircut and if his prices are the same as Don's , I said that I expected to pay 35$ as I did the first time. Scott replied that he usually charges this much for half an hour, but he spent almost an hour with me and would wanna charge me 50$. I was quite shocked and told him that I didn't know his rates and expect to pay more than the first time. He mumbled smth like: "All right, if you didn't know that.. then I could pay 35..." I felt awkward and told him that I'd give 40$ and that's the last deal. The last piece of straw was that neither my boyfriend, nor my colleagues at work noticed any change in my hair. It looked like I never went to a barber shop that day, and unfortunately wasted an hour of my life and 40$ . read more

Scott is super chill and doesn't just cut hair, he sculpts it with an eye for how it will grow out - I have received compliments on my cut even if it was done months before. He's used razor blades, clippers, done fades, layered and even used those funny zig-zag shaped scissors on my hair. Went here because I am in search of a new barber. When I came in the shop is very clean and simple. I made an appt. with Don and he was ready to cut my hair as soon as I walked in. Washed my hair out and began the cut. He has a great way of asking you what you want and how to achieve the look for your specific hair. Will be back in the future. Got a great cut. He does do a complete job so block out around 45mins to an hour. read more

Don has been cutting my hair since 1987 and has always done a great job. I was delighted when he opened his own shop - maybe 15 years ago - and more so to see the success it has become. He is a real barber, and a real warm and likeable guy who makes you relax and feel welcomed. He keeps his appointments faithfully and has a loyal clientele because he takes care and pride in his work. There should be more people like Don. My mom owned a salon for 25 years so I've been around it a lot and Scott really knows his stuff and knows how to make you look good no matter what kind of hair you have. It's whole in the wall, comfortable Mens Barber shop, They are very settled, experienced, hand on people. Managers and staffed are very professional, I had my hair cut "Just the Right way". I had great conversation with Scott while he was working on my hair, it all took 30 min for a great Cut. *Make sure to call in and make a booking with them, parking didn't scare me with plenty of street parking, and I believe they have limited spot behind the block. read more

This place is my go to for hair cuts since moving back to LA about a year ago (I grew up in Santa Monica and have gotten hair cuts all over). Don, the owner, always treats you like an old friend, and his presence makes the place feel warm. I've gotten my hair cut by Mauricio, Scott, and Mike, and really liked it each time. For me personally, I'm paying for a service, not the words that travel to my ears because of compression waves in the air. I'm giving this place five stars because I'm always satisfied with the way I look, independent of the conversation or whatever (though that's good too). As a student who will have approximately 300k of debt in about 5 years, this place is pricey for me (34 with tip, compared to cheaper at other places), but I love the hair cut, I know what I'm paying for, so I can't let that deter my rating. It's a damn good, quality service they provide. Bottom line, really skilled stylists that take their time, are meticulous and make you feel at ease. Nothing feels rushed, but you're out the door at the time you need to be. Parking is in the back! I went to Don's cause I didn't want to shave it myself and Scott hooked me up with a legit haircut that requires no maintenance and always looks good. Now I go all the time to get it trimmed. Just had my first cut here and I gotta say I'll definitely be going back. Which should really mean something considering I've lived in L.A. about ten years and I can't remember ever having my hair cut by the same person more than once.
