I recently revisited Don's Chicken and Fish and was pleasantly surprised! My initial experience was a bit underwhelming, but this time the food was truly awesome. The flavors were spot-on, and everything from the crispy chicken to the perfectly seasoned fish left me impressed. I highly recommend giving this place a try--it's definitely worth a second look! Parking could be very difficult. The pricing for the fish combo I got wasn't too bad. I got a piece of fried chicken on the side. If you're looking for takeout, only this place is great they indoor seating the place looks like it needs a little updating. Service was just OK!!!

I have ordered twice through Grubhub, and my order was packed nicely, hot and fresh. i've had the fried snapper, the fried catfish and the shrimp and all were excellent. I prefer the potato salad over the macaroni salad, fries were crispy. When I'm craving fried fish and don't want to leave home, this will definitely be on my rotation ongoing.

This is the kind of creative hole in the wall that we can't help give five stars to, every time. Like, a fried chicken AND fried fish spot? connected to a liquor store?? Occupying an entire strip mall L-shaped building painted bright purple and yellow with a mural of Kobe? Everything tasted like they were fried moments before we bit into them, which they were. The folks at Don's fry their food fresh with every order, and you can tell by how juicy and not-mushy the fish is. The hush puppies had a good crisp but avoided being too dense on the inside. The fries were as good as fries get. The tartar sauce was not cloying, and the hot sauce struck the delicate balance between hot, tangy, sour, just diluted enough to match the fish but not too runny. One constructive criticism: they bread their fish like one would bread fried chicken, and it's a bit thick for the more delicate meat. I would suggest they experiment with a slightly lighter breading for their seafood, especially since they go through the trouble of offering fresh snapper, catfish, oysters, etc The whole operation is a Korean American family business, based on the conversation I overheard in the language. I was disappointed to not find any Soju or Korean snacks beyond ramen, but maybe that doesn't sell at the border of Long Beach and Compton.

    Da food!

A hole in the wall but such a great find and great value!! Thank you to our fellow yelpers for leading the way to here. My friend and I came to Coolidge Park for the community movie night. We thought there might be some food trucks to grub from but alas there was none. We had a nice walk (about 1 mile) which brought us to this tasty establishment. Firstly, you're welcomed into this space with the beautiful Kobe and Gigi murals on the adjacent exterior wall. You walk in and you get welcomed by an electronic welcome audio and of course the staff. Yummy Southern-style freshly fried foods. You choose the fish (6 different varieties). Then they season, batter, and fry them fresh for you. Crispy, crunchy, light, perfectly coated, flavorful (hint of garlic) not greasy at all. Homemade hush puppies too with plenty of corn and jalapenos.

It's good most of the time. Sometimes the fish is super salty and the fries can be under seasoned but when it's made good... it be FIRE

The sauce in the bag felt a bit... watered down like it went for a swim before meeting the seafood. For a party of four, we ordered: SHRIMP LOVER COMBO, LOBSTER ROLL, SIDE OF RICE, BASKET OF SEASONED FRIES, AND MAD DOG XXX SAUCE on the side. Portion-wise, we left comfortably full and only slightly questioning our life choices. The Shrimp Lover Combo can't be modified. We chose Stinkin' Special and Spicy, which came with a plastic glove so you can dig in like a civilized gremlin. The Stinkin' Special was a generous blasts of Old Bay and enough garlic to ward off vampires. The Mad Dog sauce wasn't shock-your-soul spicy, but it definitely lingered. I was still feeling its friendly burn hours later and well into the evening. The LOBSTER ROLLL was tasty but fleeting. It's one of those dishes that makes you realize the meal is almost over right when you're hitting peak satisfaction. A little emotional damage there. We wrapped it all up with deep-fried Oreos and ice cream, which was an instant win. Sweet, cooling relief after all that heat. Tip: Sign up to their text newsletter at the restaurant and enjoy a free basket of fries. BTW, their website is down. :(

Not sure if they had like their own breading or something?...but they were sooooo crunchy on the outside and incredible soft on the inside. And the cheese sauce on the old bay fries wasn't your cheap nacho cheese; it was thick and had a creamy flavor that KILLED it. Their wings were also very crunchy, as were the calamari fries. I especially loved how the calamari was not minced, as I thought it would be so that it could be formed into a fry shape. I think the theme here is crunch. And they found the PERFECT balance between crunch and tender for each food I tried (didn't get the lobster dishes tho because I don't like lobster and I was kind of forced to come here...hahaha).

We had the dinner for 2, two apps, two rolls and a desert. We both had different rolls, the crab cake and sweet waffle fries. The crab cake was very good, and not overly bready. My sister and I visited this past --our walnut salad was fresh, the Riesling hit perfectly, and the calamari came out with that golden crunch to die for. But our server... all we could say was Steve, Steve, Steve!!!! He took the cake! Talk about impeccable service and making you feel genuinely welcomed--that's an understatement. This was my second time here, and I've gotta say, I think this has officially become one of my all-time favorites. Downtown Long Beach has always had such a fun, foodie-filled atmosphere. I know some restaurants are struggling, but it's because they didn't have the same atmosphere & service. The food is great, but what really stands out to me are the PEOPLE. Even the servers who weren't serving our table intentionally, smiled, and said hello as they passed. I even remembered one of the servers from my last visit and her sister because they both have some of the most inviting personalities ever. That says a lot about the culture of a restaurant. We also had the opportunity to meet the new GM, which was another nice touch. Great food. Great ambience. GREAT people. And Steve,,,you're the best! 10/10. We'll definitely be back.
