We order from A&J's often--almost every week at this point--which is why this experience was so disappointing. Unfortunately, one employee, Marisol, consistently provides poor customer service. She comes across as combative, takes no accountability for mistakes, and makes resolving simple issues unnecessarily difficult. My daughter called in our usual order for pickup. When she arrived, she immediately noticed something was wrong because the total was much lower than expected. When she politely brought it to Marisol's attention, instead of acknowledging that there may have been a mistake, Marisol insisted the order had never been placed that way. She then asked my daughter if she wanted to order the missing item while she was already there to pick up her food, which would require waiting another 15 minutes. Since the delay was the result of an incorrect order, my daughter asked if she could at least receive fresh fries while waiting. Marisol told her she would have to pay extra for fresh fries. Marisol also claimed that she had repeated the order back over the phone when it was originally placed. That simply isn't true. She rushed my daughter off the phone, saying she'd see her in 15 minutes, without reviewing the order. We've continued to support A&J's because the food is consistently excellent, but experiences like this make it harder to keep coming back. Great food can only go so far when customers are made to feel dismissed instead of valued. Since we had smaller appetites, this was basically finished before we left to get back home. seafood chowder: holy moly, I mean the cheese being shredded (chef's kiss emoji), imitation crab, green onions, shrimp, potato, this was so rich and creamy. we regretted only getting a cup but it was also just enough due to the richness (and our lactose intolerant tummies). vietnamese coffee: well I didn't know it was going to come in a cup as big as one's bladder, but this (as one knows about Vietnamese coffee) packed the punch in your throat by the first sip. The garlic shrimp is a stand out dish. Most of the garlic flavor comes from the rich sauce. There is not a lot of chopped garlic bits coating the shrimp if that is what you prefer. I found this fine. The sauce is generously poured on and soaked up by the rice, giving the rice much needed flavor and taste balance. A lemon wedge and several slices of pineapple are included to give the dish its tropical taste. There is some outdoor covered seating around the shack but you are generally facing the small parking lot. Good place to grab a quick bite but I saw most get their orders to go. read more

Last time I was here I had the fried rice which was phenomenal! I was tempted to get it again today but I wanted to try something different. I opted for stir fried noodles with no sausage and the salt and pepper wings. They were packaged nicely for transporting home but I had to take a quick bite before the ride home. The noodles were delicious and chicken was nice and tender. The wings were crispy and tasted great even without dipping it in the accompanying sauce on the side. Ah this garlic shrimp was sooo good! I loved the heafty amount of rice it comes with and the sweet slices of pineapple too. We had Horrible experience...my friend was in town and wanted crab so I took him here. He paid $80 plus with tips for one crab and we sat down. My friends and I came here after a day at Anime Los Angeles. There's only outdoor seating so you're going to have to eat in your car or sneak into the nearby McDonald's if it's super windy and cold outside. The food came out decently quickly enough and we hauled ass to run away from the cold afterwards. Unfortunately, a lot of the more unique things that we wanted to order off of the menu was sold out, so that was a bit disappointing. We got the: 1) Fried Whole Squid: -Always see these offered at night markets and you don't usually see it offered at restaurants so we ordered this. Comes with lime and their house sauces. -Tentacles were hard and chewy. Overall this was a bit too dry and chewy even with the sauces. Not like the quality fried squid that I've had elsewhere with the moister meat on the inside. 2) Beef sticks on rice: -Comes with 2 large skewers with lemon grass marinated grilled beef served with steamed rice, pickled papaya, and garnished with cilantro and green onion. -Probably the best of what we ordered. Moist and deliciously sauced beef. Went great with the rice. Pickled papaya was a unique addition to it too. 3) Stir Fried noodles: -Flat rice noodles tossed with chicken, shrimp, Chinese sausage, eggs, onions, Chinese broccoli and carrots. -It was more veggies than anything. Not that many noodles and the meat was all dry outside of the Chinese sausage. I took some bites of this and was done. Took the rest back to feed my dad who had to cook extra protein to go with this. 4) Spring Rolls: -Made with mint, lettuce, shrimp, pork belly, cucumber and bean sprout with all of the sauces. -The most disappointing of everything that we ordered. -All the meat inside was super dry, making the entire spring roll even drier than it already was, even with dousing it with sauce. Literally you can get better spring rolls at BMC. That's bad. 5) Thai Tea: -Decent fast food level Thai tea. Sweet pick me up if you need it. All we wanted was to try the Khmer sausage but completely sold out for the night. It's a hot day in California I need this food and a visit to the beach after to walk off the calories. My order. Garlic Shrimp Seasoned to perfection sautéed with garlic herbs and spices with a nice spicy kick served with steamed rice pickled cabbage & papaya salad it's very good. 10/10 in my opinion. Salt & Pepper Wings Seasoned lightly and fried crispy with a crunch that makes me want more tossed with shallots and sliced jalapeños and sweet chili sauce. I order extra shallots and jalapeno peppers it's that good. 10/10 Be sure to ask them to fry your wings extra crispy golden brown. I tried the garlic shrimp, and while I enjoy garlic, I found the sauce a bit too sweet and garlicky for my taste. I was the first person to order this day and the girl that helped me was super friendly and efficient. I ordered their garlic shrimp plate because others have mentioned it's like the ones in Hawaii. Amazing food, poor choice in staff. I've been a loyal customer for quite some time because the food is genuinely excellent. I spend roughly $300 a month here, and the employee who is usually at the front window knows me, my family, and even our regular order. That's what made this experience so disappointing. I called in a phone order that included two orders of salt and pepper wings. When I arrived to pay and pick up my food, one order of wings was missing. Marisol told me she never heard me order the second one. Mistakes happen, and I understand that. Since I have a large family, I couldn't simply leave without the missing food, so I agreed to wait the additional 15 minutes for a fresh order of wings. Because of the extra wait, I politely asked if the fries that had already been prepared could be remade so they wouldn't be cold and stale by the time the wings were finished. Instead of acknowledging the inconvenience, Marisol insisted that I never ordered the second wings because she "knows" she repeated my order back to me. She also said I would have to pay an additional $4 if I wanted fresh fries. The issue wasn't the $4. It was the way I was treated. She repeatedly implied that I was being dishonest instead of considering that a simple mistake may have occurred. Ironically, during the conversation she also stated that she "could barely hear" me on the phone. If that was the case, it only reinforces the possibility that part of my order may not have been heard correctly. Rather than taking ownership or trying to find a reasonable solution, I was met with defensiveness and zero accountability. I paid for my food in full and left feeling completely disrespected. To make matters worse, I called afterward hoping to speak with a manager. I simply asked what days or hours management would be available. I was never asking for anyone's personal phone number. Instead, Marisol avoided answering the question, said she couldn't give out the manager's number, then told me someone named "Ban" would call me back in 15 minutes. That call never came. The food here is fantastic, which makes this even more unfortunate. I had actually brought someone with me who had never eaten here before because I had been talking so highly about the restaurant. Instead of leaving impressed, we both walked away talking about the customer service. One unpleasant interaction can happen anywhere, but how it's handled makes all the difference. I left feeling dismissed, unheard, undervalued, and like my loyalty as a longtime customer meant absolutely nothing. I truly hope management addresses this because the food deserves much better representation than the customer service I experienced. read more

I will say that despite nobody in front of me, my food took quite a while. Got the sandwich, a shrimp plate, and a thai iced tea. Beef stick sandwich is definitely unique and worth trying. Great flavors, great crunch from the slaw. I think it honestly needed some spice/sriracha. The shrimp plate was probably my favorite. I came a few months ago so I don't have any photos unfortunately, but it was a solid meal, honestly we thought it would be better because of the hype. My friend ordered the shrimp, and they were really solid, definitely not better than Hawaii, but still a great try! This little take out spot has one of the best shrimp dishes in all of So Cal! I've heard that they had garlic shrimp just like from Hawaii. I've never been to Hawaii but we were going to Queen Mary Dark Harbor so we thought to try it. The rice soaked up the sauce and made it more delicious. The crispy salmon had very crispy skin served with white rice and some kind of mango side salad and a tangy dipping sauce. My colleague recommended this place while we were out training. Its a small spot and with difficult parking just as a warning. There is some seating and its out doors as the location is walk up only. The service was quick and friendly and easy to order of their menus. The hot food is prepared fresh and it was delicious. I ordered the lo mein and it was large enough for multiple servings. The spring rolls were as normal as they come but I still appreciated it as I don't want anything abnormal and funky when I order spring rolls. got to try this place after seeing it in a YouTube video. the place itself is in a small shopping plaza, with only outdoor seating (very limited). you order at the shack and they call you when it's ready. it took about 10 minutes to get our order. we got the garlic butter shrimp with the oysters (had like a nuoc mam on the side). the shrimp came with rice and a lemon wedge, and the flavor was very good! lots of garlic pieces too which I like. only issue is that it had too much oil. it made the rice soupy, like an oil soup. the oysters were great though. they were HUGE and the nuoc mam (with other stuff in it idk what) was a GREAT touch. all in all, I would go back, but maybe to try something else on the menu. read more

A Yelp find that I had to try today. Saw they offered a Stir Fried Noodle Plate that absolutely looked delectable on photo. On to Long Beach we go. Pulled up and the place LOOKED like there's some good renderings happening here. Hadn't eaten anything at all so I brought my appetite. The service was pretty direct. The ambiance was one where you knew the food was good. Only outdoor seating and individuals and families all pulled up chairs to have their meals. I was next. Copped me a squat at a bench counter and went in. Wasn't particularly satisfied with the lack of protein in my Combination Fried Rice, but it was indeed tasty. Underwhelmed by the 2 Shrimp and Chicken Pieces but the dish did not lack flavor. Even enjoyed the Pickled Cabbage garnish. Added a nice twang to the meal. Next was the Salmon Sandwich. Nice tender succulently grilled Salmon with Tomato, Grilled Onion, Leafy Green Lettuce, and a House Sauce that set the Sandwich on a level worth repeating in the near future. I was craving chowder/bisque and my usual spot didn't open til 11:30am. in a time crunch, i stopped at AJ's on my way to my destination in the hill. I got a preferred parking spot and one customer had just left. I ordered the seafood chowder. I guess I should have ordered the highly recommended garlic shrimp. Sorry to report the fried rice and stir fried noodles we did order were incredibly boring. The noodles with Chinese broccoli was a few paper thin strips of stems , with a few carrot coins. Yes, the sausage, chicken and shrimp were plentiful, but this dish was lacking flavor. The sauce was very thin and soaked fully into the noodles by the next day making them bloated and soft. The fried rice was similarly bland, but had the dried beef sausage which was better flavored than the Chinese sausage slices in the noodles. Plentiful yet not flavorful, we took home leftovers but ended up barely touching them. I will try again with the garlic shrimp next time and see if this score improves.
