    Fried chicken
    Lauretta N.

I was looking forward to eating southern food especially fried chicken. Service is very good and server was friendly and attentive. I ordered the fried chicken with macaroni and cheese and greens. Hubby had the vegetarian plate with sweet potato fries, beans and rice. He was happy with his meal. I was not. Coating on the chicken was good and it was crispy but the the meat was very dry....so disappointing. Sides were average. Don't think I will return.

Service was great ! Very attentive. The food was amazing! I got a bbq brisket sandwich , I picked the Mac n cheese for the side so yummy. The sandwich was so full with brisket I was able to steal some pieces and put it in my Mac and cheese! That's how much brisket it had! Peach cobbler was so good as well. The bowl was mash potatoes and cheese grits so cheesy , pulled chicken on top!!

DINNER FOR TWO SPECIAL I don't know what's up with the mid reviews, this place is great for what it is!! Walking in is like being transported out of Long Beach and to the south.... Or a diner in big bear lake. It's charming. Anyways, I ordered the dinner for 2 for my mother and father. It came with a bit of bbq chicken, half rack of ribs, tri tip, catfish, cornbread, 2 sides, okra, sweet Potatoe fries and fried green tomatoes. I ordered myself a full rack baby back rib combo and it also came with two sides. French fries and mac. On top of that I ordered some hush puppies . I did not realize that I ordered that much food!!! It was sooo much. Cornbread - meh doesn't really have enough flavor but it's warm and you can add butter. The catfish- the breading was nice and crispy. French fries and mac and cheese- you can't ness that up. The tri tip- probably the best protein that we ate. Very soft. Ribs- needed more bbq sauce but you can order more. It was way better the next day when I heated them up. Chicken- I didn't eat it. My mom did. Hush puppies- fried cornbread. Not my thing. Sweet Potatoe fries- staple Fried green tomatoes- surprised me, that was actually good for literally a fried green tomato Okra- first bites, amazing, after a few it was too soggy for me. Just get the dinner for two. It's more than enough and you get to try a little bit of everything for 58 + dollars. Was it amazing? Not everything, but I appreciate the portion sizes and the variety.

BBQ for bae. We stopped in Johnny Rebs' Truth South over the weekend and it was pretty tame. There wasn't much of a dinner crowd so there was plenty of seating as well as spaces in their lot and/or street parking. It's a quaint little long shack-esque restaurant with a lot of rustic charm. It's been around for over 40 years since 1984, almost as long as I've been around (85'). They do a lot of comfort southern food and actually have a few healthy options in the mix. I had the Farmer's Market Salad, which was enjoyable enough, really nice portion. And there was also an order of frickles (fried pickles) for the table. When I've seen frickles at other places they're completely coated like onion rings or deep fried oreos, these are crispy on top and bottom, like a mini breaded pickle burger. Dusted in cornmeal situation as they advertise, much like their okra. We were a group of four and had some nice beverages, conversation as well as a great server. He felt like a manager, but he and the other JRTS staff we interacted with were all friendly, personable and full of hospitality. I remember asking if I wanted protein in the salad and me saying avocado. And the guy suggestion their chicken, pork, etc. Only to let him know I'm a veggie just along for the ride. And him saying yeah I don't think you'd enjoy any of it if that's the case. He was really fun, funny and nice. The restaurant itself is a little bit on the narrow side and the restrooms are tucked away, but for all and well kept up like the entire joint. The consensus was it's okay. I think everyone felt their food was mild and a touch bland and the frickles overly salty... Not much of a happy medium. I remember coming here a small handful of times when I was a kid and we'd visit my mom's family in Long Beach when I was a meat eater and it being much more lively. My boyfriend remembered similar times from his ventures here pre-2020. Solid starters and sides, a few of which I could have, but not sure if I would try as this isn't the most ideal place for someone who doesn't eat meat and hasn't had it in over 21 years. I'd pop in again if my boyfriend had a hankering, but he didn't much enjoy his southern speciality. Portions are plentiful and the prices are reasonable for sure. Music and ambience are solid. The sweet tea is perfect! Menu is pretty well rounded. And they do served beer, wine and have free Wi-Fi so I could see us grabbin a beverage and sharing a starter if nothing else.

I feel bad for leaving a low review when the service was so stellar, but perhaps they'll see this and make some improvements. I came here with my date to check out the place, and the inside is extremely charming. Even more charming was our server, who truly made the experience worthwhile, from his extensive knowledge of the menu, sense of humor, and his voice! Best server I've probably had in my life, so please understand my critique is strictly about the food, as the service was STELLAR! Almost every single item fell flat. The cornbread was dry and flavorless. The BBQ platter fell flat and although we were told it was smoked with 13 woods, I couldn't taste one. The fried okra was pathetic, tasting like absolutely nothing. Right behind that was the fried green tomatoes, that also tasted like nothing. 10 points for the sweet potato fries that saved the appetizer. The macaroni is actually grilled, and it's actually an AMAZING concept and created the PERFECT TEXTURE! But the TASTE was BLAND!!! Gotta see it through! The only things I liked were the catfish, the sweet potato fries, and the apple pie with ice cream. But the BBQ, the thing we came for, was all disappointing. I think it's the worst bbq spot I've ever been to, taste-wise. Again, the service is stellar and the location is extremely charming! If they could turn up the flavor, that would make a huge difference!

South by South West (Coast) BIRTHDAY MONTH=BIRTHDAY COUPONS=HAPPY RODNEY $20 Birthday Month promo for Rewards members A rustic looking wood cabin, Johnny Reb's True South cooks up Southern comfort for the masses. My initial impression upon stepping inside, was that of a wooden dining car/railroad apartment. The dining area is one long rectangular room, the width not being that spacious & accommodating. A back porch area allows for dining al fresco. Initially going for the South of the Border Omelette, I thought it best to go for a true Southern dish - the Catfish Plate. Catfish Plate- A fillet of catfish, cornbread & choice of 2 sides. I went with collards & grilled mac and cheese (grilled costing $1 extra). The catfish was luxuriously flaky, melting in my mouth. I was told Johnny Reb's cornbread was savory, and it was! Salty & crumbly, I much preferred this over a sweet cornbread. The grilled mac & cheese provided a welcome burnt layer, akin to pizza & lasagna. Worth $1? Perhaps, perhaps not. However, with the $20 birthday month promo? Indeed! Service was excellent. The young woman attending to tables was hospitable & quick with recommendations. Parking is via private lots on each side of the restaurant. Yeehaw! Johnny Reb's True South offers an excellent birthday month promo for Rewards members, and I was quite happy with my meal. I look forward to coming back, and exploring the rest of the menu, next chance I get.

I can't speak on behalf of their food, but we ordered a smoked turkey from here and it was the best decision ever! We decided to host Thanksgiving this year, and turkey is the one thing no one likes to cook or eat, d so we decided to buy a smoked turkey and have the work done for us already. Ordering by phone was very easy and straightforward. We scheduled a pick up time, and my husband came home with the packaged turkey with instructions on how to reheat it in the oven. Even though the directions were clear, I was still worried that I would mess it up. I followed the directions to a T and at exactly the two hour mark, the turkey was ready at 165°. It was such a hit at our dinner, even people who normally don't eat turkey took leftovers home. I decided to keep the turkey bones to make a broth, then made leftover turkey noodle soup a couple of days after. I would 100% recommend getting your next Thanksgiving turkey from here.

    Okra Ribs and bland veggies

Food was bland. Fried chicken was not breaded. Ribs were tough and the bbq was straight tomato paste with no flavor. Mac and cheese is okay. Fried catfish had no flavor. FYI we have deep roots in Mississippi, Tennessee. We know what southern BBQ is supposed to taste like. And this isn't it at all.

I usually come here for lunch or early dinner. Always enjoy it. Rarely eat breakfast...but today really felt like one. Had the Ham and Eggs with a side of French toast. I like my Eggs scrambled very soft. Very hard to find a place which does them to my liking. That said, these today were perfect The ham had a pronounced 'smokieness' which was great. Didn't think I could finish these portions, but did...as pics will show. All I can say is this: if you want a full-on great "country style" breakfast you better be coming here.

My wife wanted bbq chicken with mashed sweet potatoes. This place had that on the menu and I ordered it. so got jambalaya for me (chicken, sausage, shrimp). The food was terrible. Chicken had no sauce and none in the side. Cold fries. No shrimp in the tasteless jambalaya. The food was awful. only good thing was the corn bread. Such a terrible meal. I'll never come back. You shouldn't either.

This little non-descript building has been here for years, and they stick to what they do best! Homey, Southern cooking. It is a menu packed with delicious entrees, sandwiches, salads, drinks and desserts. You can order just about any combination of anything! The building is narrow, galley style, with a small parking lot; we came for early dinner to be sure and get seated immediately. The walls are decorated with fun signs and objects. We are presented with our drinks (water) and a bowl of peanuts in the shell. They do a pretty fair barbecue, and even breakfast, which we definitely want to try sometime, but our most favorite item is the catfish. Hubby had it traditional breaded and fried, with all the sides; I ordered the blackened catfish with Caesar salad this visit. Portion is huge- we opt for the 2 piece. The fried fish had the perfect crispy coating, while the meat inside was moist and flaky. I thought the blackened fish could have had a little more of a kick but it was delicious. The salad was tasty, and tangy with big croutons. Their sides are always good- pretty standard but they go so well with any entree. Barbecue beans, Cole slaw, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn bread, hushpuppies, collard greens... ! We split an appetizer of the boudin balls. These rich little cheese stuffed fried sausage balls with creole remoulade are addictive and very filling! We splurged with a slice of homemade key lime pie. It was the perfect ending! Service is low key, friendly and accommodating. They regularly offer specials like 2 for 1 catfish Friday, lunch specials, carry out, and catering.

Food was so yummy! Great service by Nique! Cutely decorated southern style and decor. They had peanuts on the table, but you can't throw them on the floor which was fine with us. Great lunch specials that came with drinks for only $13! I had the fried chicken bowl and my mom had the catfish strips with one side and cherry lemonade and also peach lemonade. Don't forget the peach cobbler.

I love fried chicken, and this style is not my style, it okey, flavorful and the pieces are small. For some reason the legs is more juicier than the thighs (abit dried for my taste). The hot sauce is over power of vignette so a it too sour for me but not enough spicy. The fish, however is perfectly cooked and coded. Juicy inside and perfectly thin crusty outside. The tartar sauce is abit off for me but eating by itself is just fine for me. Fries are good but I'm not into it so..but perfectly cooked and crunchy and pipping hot. For me, the fish here is WAY much better than the chicken from the size, the taste and the favor...so good. Also, if you want dessert after the meal, they do have donuts so perfect place for the whole meal for sure.
