Definitely one of my go to places. Had oxtail soup on my last visit. Light but very tasty beef broth, lots of tender oxtail meat, bok choy, carrots, peanuts, and fresh grated ginger. Also added some brown rice to my soup. Highly recommend it! My sistah (from another muddah) ordered the taco salad (served in a crispy flour tortilla bowl) with extra sour cream. Hubby & sistah's hubby made like twins and both ordered fettuccine with marinara sauce & garlic bread. Everyone finished their meals with gusto. Then to top it all off we had apple lumpia ala mode (Yum-oh!, my fav), and ice cream pie (oreo cookie crust, coffee & chocolate ice cream & fudge topping). read more

I'll be honest: it's all about that ice cream pie. We've been here a couple of times, and I haven't found an entree that I'd order again, but the pie? #SoOno And I know what you're thinking; you can get a slice of mud pie just about anywhere. But that little layer of fudge between the chocolate and coffee ice creams is a game changer. I'll keep going through the menu until I find an entree I love so I can justify coming back for the pie. My husband loves the hamburger steak there, though. One of my biggest pet peeves is an empty water glass, and this time mine sat empty for most of the meal. Then when our waitress came over, she didn't even offer to fill it, I had to ask. I think the wait staff are so focused on speed that simple aloha slips through the cracks a little. Jose can you see by Don's early light? If so, it is time for breakfast amigo! A nondescript diner on a backstreet somewhere in Hilo, Don's Grill has decent service and fair prices, but is utterly unspectacular. The place has a vintage coffee shop motif with breakfast, lunch and dinner options served all day. I asked our server for a list of beers, one of which was "Longboard", but when I asked if it was an IPA she looked at me and shrugged her shoulders, never offering to walk 20 feet to check. "I guess I will have the water", I said. I had the Pork Cutlet Dinner ($13.75), two small, thin, cutlets breaded and fried and covered with brown gravy. It came with a very small salad and a roll fresh from a plastic bag. I had asked the server if they made their own mashed potatoes and she apologetically shook her head from side to side. "I guess I will have the fries", I said. The cutlets were extremely dry, making them difficult to cut even though they were very thin. The flavor was OK and the fries were hot, I will give them that, but the steamed carrot, broccoli and cauliflower medley was bland as all get out. My wife ordered the Mushroom and Cheddar Omelette ($9.75), coming with hash browns and toast. When they say toast, they mean toast, because this is the only place I have ever seen that gives you just one piece of toast cut in half. The three egg omelette was actually cooked perfectly and there was plenty of mushrooms and cheese inside. The hash browns were plentiful and also perfectly cooked, a crispy golden brown on top and soft and warm on the inside. Based on our experience, I would stick with the breakfast offerings if I were you. We filled the holes in our stomachs and neither got sick the next day nor paid an arm and a leg, so as George W. Simple dining in Hilo town. We come here nearly every Sunday for brunch. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Super simple homestyle cooking. The dining room could use a make over, but you will get that old-timey feeling for sure. Seating is ample, and there is even an area resembling a greenhouse with natural lighting. I usually stick with a good ole eggs and corned beef hash with white rice. Once in a while I'll get a Daikin and a burger. Great for those rainy Hilo days! read more

This is a hidden little place that if you don't know where it is you'll go right by. First off the are keeping up with CDC code which is great. The place is immaculate inside. My husband had the biggest calamari we've ever seen and I had a great special sauce beef dish. Everything was delicious and we got a ton of food for a very reasonable price. We loved the local-diner atmosphere and several waitresses took care of us. Before our trip to Hawaii I had read that it's a tradition to call diner waitresses "Auntie" but this is the only place I heard it. That added Hawaiian culture was awesome. First of all, the parking available here is great! There is ample parking for this restaurant only! It is a great place to eat with family, friends, and children of all ages. The food selection is vast and everything tastes great! Upon entering, one is always greeted by the friendliest, happiest workers. They sit you immediately on very clean tables and chairs. Also, their menu is NOT sticky-another indicator that this place is well-cleaned and maintained. They serve lots of salads, local favorites, Japanese cuisine with a mixture of just about anything your heart desires. The food always tastes great and comes fairly quickly. My husband and I decided to come here after being away for many years. We realized that we should make this restaurant one of our usual spots because it is very affordable, the food is consistent and tasty, the service is great, and the mud pie. The MUD PIE!!!! If there is one thing I would recommend that no other restaurant has.. it's the mud pie. Other dishes we like to get are the taco salad, Hamburger steak, Teri chicken, and Portuguese bean soup. Always my go-to spot for quick and easy meals! Not a fancy restaurant but very convenient and consistent. My favorite is the grilled mahi-mahi. Takes less than 10 minutes to be delivered to table and tastes so ono! Our waitress was named Lexis or Alexis. I really don't care too much for the food here. I ate out a lot on a regular basis and tried pretty much everywhere Island wide and a few of Don's menu items are ok reminds me of elementary school food. What makes me not like their food is they are the frozen type that you can make at home and I especially prefer freshly cooked vegetables instead of frozen or canned. Reminds me of fancy deluxe frozen TV dinners. Only food critics will know exactly what I am talking about here. If you're a restaurant (and not a cafeteria) why not use all fresh ingredients??? I can cook better tasting food that's made fresher at home. I go out to pay for my restaurant food with my hard earned money to experience BETTER and FRESHER than my home cooked meals... I go there mostly as a guest when invited as to not be rude by declining the invites. read more

Always a must when we come back to visit our family in Hilo. Think local and comfort food. All your local favorites and they have signature specials too. And the service is always welcoming and friendly. If you haven't been to Don's Grill yet, make an effort to stop by here at least once and you'll end up wanting to go back any opportunity you get. Small tip though when ordering steak order it one step less cooked than what you normally order so if you like medium or medium rare if you want your steak just right. Coming from Oahu, this place reminded me of what Zippy's restaurant must have looked like when they first opened! But that's where the comparison ends ... the food are super ono and the desserts are scrumptious and prices so reasonable! We had the port cutlet, rotisserie chicken, pork chops and teriyaki beef. For dessert, apple lumpia that came with ice cream and their mud pie. We left so full! The ladies in their were awesome, so friendly! Definitely recommend to all visiting Hilo. read more

However, certainly look it's direction as Don's Grill is very much worth a visit, it's prices are very reasonable, the food surpasses my expectation (via) granted by my instinct of taste and sight. I think the loco moco was a little pricey, but portion sizes were big and food tasted good - I don't think there's much you can do to make a loco moco amazing. Auwe! Our 7-yr. old grand-daughter was excited about having a Lasagna lunch @ Don's Grill today but sad to say she was very much disappointed. The lasagna that was served to her was dried-up, macaroni was very hard & dry to the bite & no sauce whatsoever. She was so sad that she couldn't enjoy it this 4th time. We asked the server for some sauce but that didn't help because it's as though they poured the sauce from a can...I.e., tomato sauce can. She was SO sad & so disappointed.
