This donut knows what's going on
    Mary C.

I already loved Donut City, but now that they have breakfast sandwiches and espresso drinks, I'm planning to move into the parking lot. The bacon egg and cheese tastes like your grandma made it for you so you'd be ready to go out and play all day, and the white maple latte confers instant hot girl energy with the first sip. That happy donut mural is smiling with the confidence of a mascot who knows your day will get better because you walked in to this business.

    Blueberry donuts and donut holes
    Angie M.

I have been craving a donut and talking to my client about donuts yesterday, so while charging my car, I decided to hop into pavilions and see what they had not realizing of the donut shop nearby. I've driven by the shop so many times I never thought much of it. Today, I had a bit of a wait, I figured I'd swing by and check it out. There wasn't much of a selection since I came two hours prior to closing. BUT THEY HAD BLUEBERRY DONUTS. I bought two of the three available +3 donut holes. The lady helping me saw that I was trying to see the menu, so she told me how much everything was. I paid with cash but they do take card. Lucky for me, my blueberry donut craving was resolved with $1.50.

Very good donut spot. We got there later in the day when the selection was restricted. First off this place is very dated and for me that's part of its charm. It's small with a handful of tables but appeared clean. We're not from the area so whenever I see a donut spot I get excited. We entered and were greeted by a little, lady lady. As I stated previously, selection wasn't all that great. I asked her "what's good?", she said "all of them!". My wife took an old fashioned which she said was a bit greasy. I took a buttermilk glazed which was fresh, sweet and wonderful.

A+ on this glazed donut. It's 11 a.m. and STILL super fresh!! Delicious!!

... I really really really wanted a shave ice, but thought ok... lemme get a Slurpee cuz I was in the wrong area for Hula Girls. So, I actually went 1.6 miles out of my way to hit up a 7-11. Out of 6 flavors, 2 were working. I hate cherry and didn't want my mouth to be blue, so I walked out... right into the donut store next door. So, because of that, let me give a shout out to Donut City. The hard working couple that had a rather sad story awhile back where the wife was sick and the husband worked alone for months only to go to her side while she needed his care. I saw her sweeping today, and she looks great, so I just nodded and said "hi". I know they are humble, hard working people from the articles I read, so I had a gut feeling not to bring up the story right now... but now I'm regretting saying "Glad to see you're feeling better"... Shout out: This donut is SUPER FRESH and it's 11 a.m. I always "try" out a plain glazed when I'm at a new shop, cuz if they can do a bomb glazed, then they go down as a mental note as a "good" donut shop. A+ here.

I don't know why I didn't think to stop by Donut City until today. Well, I'm glad that I did coz I found another donut shop to frequent whenever the craving hits. Upon entering the store, we were greeted by the owners. The store was clean so that's another good sign. Since my only reason for today's visit is to buy donuts, I placed my order for 3 of my faves -- glazed, sugar raised, and blueberry cake. The total came out to $4.10 so prices were comparable to others. Both yeast donuts were soft and pillowy. They tasted fresh and not oily. The blueberry cake delish as well; the fruit flavor wasn't lost in the donut batter. Of the three, the glazed was the best, then sugar, and then blueberry. Their glazed is almost the same as my favorite donut shop in FV. Donut City satisfied my donut craving and gets top stars for flavor, price, customer service, and convenient location. I definitely recommend them to anyone who wants or needs a donut or three. Now I have a local go-to donut place instead of driving to FV just for donuts.

Warm ham and cheese croissant by the beach
    Sharon F.

The warm ham and cheese croissant is amazing. It's pretty big and filling and I enjoyed it a lot :) I also got a pink donut with sprinkles and it was so light and fluffy.. amazing!!! The man working there is very nice, sweet, and hospitable :) The store itself is very cute and clean. This will be my new go to spot whenever I'm in the area or headed for the beach

buttermilk maple, cake donut with sprinkles and the apple fritter :)
    Georgina T.

Quality of donuts was very good. I especially liked that the apple fritter was the size of normal round donut which makes the outer crust ratio better imo. The couple who served me were very nice. The ambiance is simple/traditional old-school donut shop. Located in a small corner plaza so not many parking spots. Definitely would return when visiting Seal Beach.

    Pete B.

I visited this donut place because of all the great reviews. Staff was friendly. The donuts were fresh but they were average. I had seen all the great reviews for the blueberry donut and it was just okay. I have had them at other places where the blueberry flavor is way more prominent. The apple fritter was good comparable to other donut places. There was plenty of parking and it sounds like getting here early is important as they were out of the large apple fritter when I arrived late morning.

Went with the ube and a white chocolate macadamia. Of course both were delicious. One major caveat though-you MUST get them warmed up. Last time I had their cookies they were warm and I fell in love. This time I thought I would eat it later so I declined. Well, of course once I got the cookies in my mitts I had to have a bite or two. Initially, I was completely disappointed, and thought this can't be right. I was going to ask the friendly staff if they could warm it up, but that seemed weird since I had already broken off a couple of bites. Took my ube home, quick 15 second warm up and it was back to perfection. Rookie mistake on my part and I won't do it again. The lemon and meringue in the tart were very good: the citrus had a nice bite to it, it wasn't too sweet. I found the pastry a little thick, but that is sometimes an issue when making miniature tarts, as the pastry to filling ratio can get off-balance. The little dark chocolate bunny was ok, but honestly not any better than most retail chocolate bars for a much higher cost. On my second visit I stopped in on a morning for a matcha latte and ham and cheese croissant. The croissant was flaky and had a good balance of ham and cheese. They warm them up and it was the perfect temperature. The matcha latte was very disappointing, though. I didn't end up finishing it and threw most of it out. It was bright green, but had no real matcha flavor to speak of. Instead it tasted overwhelmingingly of vanilla. So much so that as it cooled it reminded me of drinking melted vanilla ice cream. I don't know if they use vanilla syrup by default as their sweetner, because I didn't ask for it, but if so it's an odd choice to make without telling people. Overall, a bit of a mixed bag.

This time (yesterday), however, was not nearly the same experience. First of all, I realized we couldn't book a table for 8 people, so me and my friends book 2 tables for 8.30PM. I called asking if it's possible to put our tables together close or side by side, they said they will try their best. We all showed up at 8.30 and waited until around 9-9.15 because they only had 1 table ready. Ok. Come the time the other table opened and it's not even that close to each other. But it's okay, I respect the limitations on this part. No one came to us to take our order or even give us water until way later, and we got our drinks at 9.45. Another critique is that my friend called and ask how much corkage fee and they said $25. It turned out to be $40. Another disappointment, but it's ok. Not much can be done bout that part. Next thing is the food. We enjoyed the fried green beans. Crudo was really really salty, and it's not only 1 person thought that. We wondered if the kitchen mistakenly salted the fish twice. We enjoyed the peach salad. We ordered a few different pasta and the tagliatelle in particular was disappointing. It really lacked flavor that we had to mix the other pasta dish sauce to it. The pork plate was good, a bit small but we enjoyed it. Now the mussles and frites were disappointing too. The sauce just didn't do it for me (other friends agreed). I always talked really highly about Nonna Mercato (I also enjoyed the brunch so much) and always told people that this is one of my most favorite restaurants in Long Beach, but this one really missed the mark for me and my friends. I don't know if this would make us want to go to Summer Nights again next time. For $130 per person (after tax, tip, and corkage fees), I definitely hoped for a much better experience.

Who doesn't love Paris? Who isn't a fan of baguettes? And when you think of a great bakery, Parisian treats come to mind. Similar to 85 Degrees in layout and business model (grab room temperature sweets and savories what you want from cases), and coffee, cakes, slices in refrigerated cases. PB also has an extensive drink list made to order. However unlike 85 Degrees, nothing is restocked after opening. I came around 5pm on Sunday. The baked food cases were more than half empty gone. Same for most of baked goods along back wall, including cookies and bread. Their baguettes seemed fresh but lacked enough crunch that I like. PB also has prepackaged meals - sandwiches and wraps. Starting at $9, I'm not taking a risk buying potentially a mediocre meal given my dissatisfaction with the pastries. They have fancy sweets like Dubai Chocolate Mochi Donuts, and Orange Cronut. Raspberry Nutella Round Croissant. You've seen them, shaped like wheels. Mine tasted a day old. The raspberry filling was too sweet and thick. (Artificial) Crab Cake - Big with good crunch but tasted much better the first time I had it. Mixed with veggies. Almond croissant- An example of deceptively good appearance. While flaky, it didn't taste buttery or light and airy. And the almond filling just tasted sweet. No trace of almond. The space is big and pretty cozy. Tables outsides on both sides of the business. Kudos for having both customer and pick up parking spaces. I'm willing to give them one more try. My sweet tooth wants to think they sell a few good items.
