I finally tried Donut Island for the 1st time several weeks ago. I really didn't know what to expect but the variety was broad. The workers were really nice and told me to take my time which I appreciated since people were starting to come in. I got the donuts, muffins, coffee and smoothie. The thought of sequestering myself on an island of donuts brings me joy. So I do the next best thing by trekking over to Donut Island--the on-the-go, quintessential breakfast bakery in Long Beach! While the donut selection is no different than any other donut spot, the quality of each can appease any brilliant baker. Airy, cakey, buttery, and fluffy are adjectives that can be found within these sweet delights and a dozen can be had for only $7.75. The best part? You get one free donut at check-in! I just wish some of the donuts were bigger in size. If donuts aren't your thing, (and if it isn't, we just can't be friends!) then they sell Vietnamese sandwiches too--Although they're expensively priced at $5.75 and inferior in taste to the ones in Bolsa. Delicious croissant and bagel sandwiches are available as well, all for under $4. Ham & Cheese croissants are my thang and sadly, I have to say at Donut Island they do an average job of them. The ladies working there are so nice.. but the food was not up to snuff. I ordered a half dozen donuts and a breakfast sandwich. The flavors of all the donuts was waaayyy too strong. The blueberry donut tasted like eating blueberry syrup. The maple donut tasted like chugging aunt jemima. I didn't like a single one of the donuts. I've been wanting to try donut island since i pass by it frequently and their menu isn't available online, finally got to stop by yesterday to my delight the store is super cute and had so much to offer from the food to the drinks to the items they sell here. My boyfriend and I got the plain bagel and ham egg cheese croissant which is exactly what he wanted and what I wanted and being a girl from Jersey I like my bagels and haven't found good bagels in California I NOW know my go to! I visit this place when I host training sessions in the area. They will loan you carafes(sp?) for coffee to keep it warm throughout the morning, for a small deposit that you get back upon return. I have frequented this place enough that sometimes in the morning the main lady won't even charge a deposit. They also supply you with ample amounts of creamers, sugar, cups, stirrers, etc.... all for $8 a pot. Donuts are good and prices are good with the exception of pop ($1.75/bottle) and juices, which are a bit high. Staff is friendly and quick. For Long Beach, this has got to be the best place for picking up donuts. I've been eating donuts from here for the past six months or so...I mean my coworker buys them, can you blame me? It was my first time walking in there personally and picking up a dozen myself. The place already had a few people and it was barely 5:30 AM. I noticed that they have an extensive menu of items other than donuts which I will have to try some other time. I thought it was a pretty good deal getting a dozen donuts for $7.75, and on top of that, this place wasn't in the shady side of town. These donuts are the best and cheapest in the area, I won't go to any other donut shop other than this one now. Might not be as good as Peterson's Donut Corner in my native Escondido, but since I'm stuck here now for the most part, this will be my replacement. Yes, this is the donut place I have always looked for! I've been here 4 times in the last couple months and they remember me and my order each time! When you walk in, it's not like the other cambodian-family-owned donut shop (don't get me wrong, those donuts are legit as well). The staff were a little to chatty with each other to really acknowledge me, it wasn't until after the 3rd employee walked into the room that anyone said hello. I ordered an old fashioned donut, cinnamon twist donut and a ham croissant. They nuked croissant to warm it up. I paid and left. First bite into my croissant was good, but nothing stood out. This place is a trip because the signage on the windows say there are donuts, lotto, Thrifty ice cream and a notary public all in one location. I mean what more could you want? The large chocolate twist donut was so good. I mean it was an average donut done right. It had the perfect fluffiness, just as supple as it was firm, the chocolate glaze was melt in your moth good, and it had a soft chewiness that would only leave you wanting more. A week ago Friday, I went into Donut Island to buy my usual selection of lottery tickets and something sweet. They have everything from Ice Cream (Thrifty) to delicious fresh Donuts! I asked the female clerk if she could just choose me a $2 scratcher. When I got back to my office and scratched off the numbers, I was in shock. Then I did a dance. Then I went back to the Donut Island with my winning ticket, having no clue how much I won. $77... I gave $20 to the women who picked out the ticket. It felt really good gifting back to her since she chose it for me. Today, I needed to buy donuts and coffee for a meeting. Of course I went to Donut Island. They were so kind. They insisted on giving me a few free donuts which worked out magically since more people were at the meeting then I anticipated. I love this place. There's something to a community donut joint that can really capture the vibe of both the owners and the neighborhood. This place is cool like that. But it's also got really good stuff. This place never lets me down. My sister was her two weeks ago and I brought her here just to try their breakfast sandwiches, she loved it and loved loved their coffee. I stopped in this morning before church for my tai ice tea and donuts. The service is always GREAT and everyone is always so nice. They have a wide selection of smoothies (I particularly like the strawberry & pina colada). The place is quaint with outside seating so on a warm day you can sit out and people watch. Okay so right off the bat, THIS PLACE IS CASH ONLY. In the year 2010. I never carry cash. Minus 1 star right there. I just ordered one chocolate glazed donut which was 70 cents, no complaints there. The day I went in I needed to grab a couple cake boxes for some treats I was taking into the office and thought hey, I'm at a donut shop, they gotta have boxes. I asked the lady if I could buy a couple and she said sure. Went to pay and this is where I found out they only took cash -- lame! They have an ATM which will also eat up a $2 charge for using it so that was another annoyance. Anyway, I come back and she tells me each box is going to be 75 cents. Really, 75 cents? The Husby & I had so much fun this morning eating, drinking iced coffees & people watching. This place is bumpin' with people--a steady stream & they all seemed like regulars because they ordered what they wanted like pros. And there's a lot of options on their menu! As the husband & I sat, we had a giggle at all the "extras" this place sells--potato chips, plants, gallon waters, slippers (yeah...that got my husband making all kinds of jokes), lotion, liquid hand soaps, sunscreen, and yes, company t-shirts (for the low price of 7.99$). So great! And let's not forget that they're "lucky retailers" for the CA lottery. That means that when you buy a Lotto ticket from here, you are blanketed not just by your own luck but this business' luck. I like those odds. The servers are friendly & personable.
