I've heard a lot of good things about this place from friends and co-workers. Recently, I found out they served other food items besides donuts. Today, I decided to see if they lived up to the hype. Upon arrival, Donut King is definitely your hole-in-the-wall eatery that only locals would dare enter. The "parking lot" only has room for maybe 10 cars and the same can be said about the interior. There's a total of 5 tables, each only able to hold 4 people per table (only room for 20 people to dine in if you're too lazy for the math). The queue line can only hold about 10 at most before you start blocking the door and end up in the dining area. However, I've been told to never judge a book by its cover and this holds true for Donut King. I wanted to try their sliders (or Castle Burgers as they call them) since I found out they had other items besides donuts. I ordered the "Castle Burgers Special Meal" that comes with 3 Castle Burgers, Fries, Drink, and a Donut. Total for the meal was under $5 and well worth it! The sliders come with onions, pickles, and mustard (I did onions and ketchup for mine). While the sliders were not as good as White Castle's, they're were much better than the local area Krystals. The fries had a nice touch of seasoning that made the crinkle cut fries less boring. The inclusion of a donut with the meal is a great touch! I went with the "Chocolate Frosted, Chocolate Chip" Donut and it was a chocolate lover's dream come true! I'm glad that it's a great place for locals, wish they were a bit larger, but then that'll take away from the greatness that it has become. Experience: Some friends at work first off told me that i should make the trip out to Donut King, and that it would be worth my while. The first thing i want to let people know is this is a local spot. It's open 24/7 and they don't just serve donuts. This hidden gem located in several locations all over central florida has castle burgers, and they have nuggets, and new Orleans flavor upon request. They also have sticky buns (amazing, and hot). I went like first thing in the morning (9 am) and there was a line already, but it was totally worth the wait. I got a box of six. A few glazed, a sticky bun, a coconut toasted, and i got a few cinnamon sugar. I have to say the sticky bun was the best thing caramel, and nuts. I loved it. I also got the Jambalaya (to go for my lunch because friends recommended). It has chicken, and it has sausage. It is just the right amount of spicy. (also my friends get it after partying according to them, I don't party but whatever floats their boat). So was it worth the 35 minuet trip out??? Absolutely. Will i do it again? Yes.... Will i bring my friends? Yes. True local spot with just the right amount of sweet in every house made donut. Parking: a little tricky, be careful (but worth it). Atmosphere: busy!!!! When we first started going here it was awesome but now a days when we go in we can't help but get hooked up on how dirty the place is. It really needs a makeover. The donuts are awesome, and this is why we go back, however the cleanliness really makes me second guess if we should come back. We also witnessed and employee put raw meat on the grill for sliders and then proceed to grab our donuts with the same glove on. Just gross. Proof that we live in a world of great injustice is the fact that there is a Dunkin' Donuts on every corner but just two Donut King locations. Sure, it may be more convenient to seek out one of the small D&D box stores, just remember to order coffee with your donut since digesting cardboard can sometimes be difficult. Our daily 2,000 calorie struggle means our choices are important and Donut King's 200 calorie circular delight is not something that can be ordered in haste. When you arrive in the small yellow store the round sugary soldiers are staring at you, taunting you as if to say "Go ahead! Try and pick just one of us!" I have never seen anyone succeed at this. Don't be surprised if you go in on a Saturday morning to find the line snaked throughout the store, each person taking peaks at the variety ahead and rehearsing their order. With so many choices and so much pressure, the inexperienced orderers will stumble over their words like a teenage boy asking little Suzie to the prom. The experienced are able to fill three quarters of their dozen by memory: Chocolate Oreo, Red Velvet, Strawberry Sprinkles, Grasshopper, Gummy Bears, Chocolate-filled Chocolate, Blueberry Cake, Original Glaze. Yes, there are those moments of panic, even for the Donut King loyalist when a new man shows up in the lineup. It causes a moment of flash sweating and hesitation but finally the words come out, "Dark toasted Coconut, Bacon and Maple glazed and a Butterfinger donut please." If these are too much flavor for your first visit, it's ok to stick with a box of original glaze. You can't compare their glaze to Krispy Kreme. This is glaze of substance, a sweet sweater of deliciousness that coats the donut like a child in a Norman Rockwell painting. If I could order a large cup of glaze without the shame of being known as 'that guy,' I would. There aren't many humble eating establishments that are able to garner so much excitement and attention. Donut King is like your friend who tells you "I am who I am and I'm happy to be here." It may be the reason the lines are filled with the most diverse group of people you will ever see in one line--young and old, athletic and not, white and blue collar, Floridian and.......well, ok, we don't like to tell people outside of our state about Donut King. They processed our order quickly and took care of everything. They provided coffee cups, creamer and sugar for the coffee and napkins for everything. If you happen to be one of those people that think Dunkin Donuts is mis-named because what they actually sell is coffee and odd dry things with holes in the middle, then Donut King is for you. Since moving to Florida a year ago, my only donut solace has been the occasional hour-long drive to Krispy Kreme. Not anymore! The donuts are everything this midwestern Tim Horton's fan could ask for, and they don't just sell donuts. They have other pastries such as cinnamon buns, and a whole bunch of lunch/dinner food we didn't happen to sample as well. But the real value is the King Donut...if you're taking donuts back with you for friends, you've got to get at least one - they're amazing! The donuts come in an incredible assortment of flavors (Sour Patch Kids, anyone?) including basics (glazed, chocolate sprinkle, powdered sugar), unique to Donut King flavors (Red Velvet, Peanut, Coconut Crunch), and seasonal offerings (Pumpkin Spice). My personal favorite was the Pumpkin Spice cake donut, but they have a number of tasty options. The staff is very friendly and helpful, even if they did giggle a bit at my family's wide-eyed wonder at the joy that is finally finding real donuts after months of suffering through supermarket options and the dreaded double D. Worth the 45min one way to get there from The Villages area. Just wish they would open one closer - we know a lot of fellow midwesterners who would be frequent customers if it wasn't so far away. I don't eat doughnuts too often, but when I do, Donut King reigns supreme. The original location is out there in Minneola, but it's an experience worth having. I usually stick to pretty basic doughnuts, a sour cream or glazed suits me just fine. If you want to let loose, though, there are a plethora of options for you including sour patch kids, mint, M&M covered, coconut, half-and-half, various filled options, etc. The wide range of sugared goodness is one of the draws. I grew up in Southern California near a donut shop that used to be called Fosters, that same donut shop is now called "The Donut Man" and has been featured on The Food Network for the taste and variety of its donut selection - I just returned from a visit to California and during the course of that visit I stopped in at The Donut Man and sampled several of their donuts just to see if they lived up to the memory of my youth....well, they were good, no doubt about it, but I can now say, after a direct comparison, that The Donut King has the BEST donuts I have ever tasted, bar none. I've had donuts now from Ohio to California to Florida and in my humble opinion you simply cannot do better than The Donut King. If you're anywhere in the greater Orlando area, don't miss out, I promise you won't be disappointed. The shop is just a small "hole in the wall" type of place on US 27 in. Clermont but they're open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. I'd recommend getting there around 8:30 to 9:00 am for the best selection, that's normally about the time that the fritters (my personal favorite) make their appearance. A few years ago The Donut King started serving slider style burgers as well as lunch and breakfast sandwiches and platters. I'm not sure what their rationale behind this move is - I've tried several of the lunch and breakfast menu items and I've not been overwhelmingly impressed with any of it; pretty standard fare really and it seems to have slowed the speed and efficiency of the line (which does get long at times) so I'd recommend sticking with just the donuts if I were you. read more
