The 5 stars are for their plain glazed raised donuts. For years, my friends, colleagues, and I have recognized that this place makes THE BEST donuts of this variety, and we always buy from here when plain glazed raised donuts are what we are craving. So you could say that this review is long overdue. But I could not quite articulate why Donut Star's version is the best until now. Yesterday we did a side-by-side taste-test comparison of Donut Star's and another well-rated donut shop's plain glazed raised donuts, and here's the difference: -Donut Star's is by far larger and fluffier; -Donut Star's does not taste like fried dough; and -Instead, Donut Star's tastes "clean," luscious, and almost airy-cake-like (but not dense-cake-like), which is quite unique for a donut. I will continue to get my plain glazed raised donuts from here because these are simply the best, hands down. read more

I was really pleasantly surprised by this unassuming spot. We chose it for its location, as well as the convenience of their online ordering system. The prices were incredibly reasonable, and we were shocked to find the quality of donut significantly better than "gourmet" spots charging 4x more. The cake donuts were soft and delicious, and avoided the over-sweetness of chain spots. The bearclaw with cinnamon apples inside it is one of the best donuts I've ever had. I came to Donut Star a lot when I was growing up in the 90's and early 2000's, so I feel a lot of nostalgia for this place. I really do think it's the best donut place in the area. They have all the classics, and they're done really well. They have some fancy new kinds too, like cronuts and cereal-topped donuts, but the best are the traditional ones like the old fashioneds and apple fritters. You should probably stick to those. The chocolate glaze they use on their donuts is really, really good. Every time I'm in Irvine I come to Donut Star and if they ever went out of business I don't know what I would do. Today I came to Donut Star and there was a super long line outside of Omomo Tea Shoppe nearby which in my opinion is ridiculous because donuts taste a lot better. read more

Everything you can want in a donut! Coming from a donutholic, these donuts were amazing! Really delicious doughnuts served up in a classy but modern small coffee bar style environment in the heart of Irvine. The texture was soft and chewy, and there was a good amount of filling in the center, which is extremely important! The Fruity Pebbles doughnut was really delicious but the maple glazed old fashioned was great if a little bit too sweet for my tastes. Reasonably priced doughnuts in a counter serve joint with friendly staff. My sweet tooth is going to be back for old fashion donuts not cake donuts. read more

Just tried this place for the first time as I was in the area. The food was pretty good. I got the tuna melt. Pretty good sandwich. Only complaint is I eat my tuna melt with tobasco and they don't carry tobasco. Staff are awesome and kind. A lot of tables to eat outside. Really good spot for sandwiches. read more

I know this place has been around a long time and is a beloved tradition to many locals. My opinion is that they are decent donuts but nothing special. Today I went in and purchased a glazed old fashioned and a maple bar. The old fashioned didn't taste right; rather stale. The maple bar, however, was fresh, soft, and had a perfect amount of flavorful, moist maple glaze on top. I was the only customer in the store during my purchase. The guy working here (the owner?) took a phone call on his cell as he bagged my donuts and took payment. I thanked him but apparently his phone call was far more important than me, his customer - I became invisible as soon as he took that call. read more

Krispy Kreme who? Never heard of her. The Donuttery? M&M Donuts?? Cancelled. This place has the best donuts. Forget the hype at other basic bitch places. Donut Star always has perfect donuts - nothing trendy and annoying like stale fruity pebbles on top, or ube flan or other nonsense. My fave donuts here are the maple cake donut, orange cake donut (sounds questionable, but TRUST!!) and blueberry glazed. PS their ham and cheese croissant needs work but hey, it's a donut place. I have been coming here a few times per week for many years. I usually get the same thing. Today I went in and the woman behind the counter said the last time I was in my card did not go through and she said she would need to charge me twice. I don't recall anything not being approved so when I got to my car I checked my online banking and sure enough I was charged the last time I was there. I went in and started to show the woman but she began to argue with me and make excuses. No offer of a refund. Really poor CS and they just lost a long time customer over $5. read more

Maybe it is because it was on Sunday Morning? Anyways, I ordered the Grilled chicken pesto sandwich and a glazed twist donut. I was impressed! The Grilled chicken was tender and juicy, made fresh, and very delicious. It was such a big sandwich that I had to save the other half for later in the day. The glazed donut twist was soft, chewy, and melts in your mouth. Definitely one of the better quality donuts I've tasted. This is the definition of quality you can taste! For the consistency in quality of donuts, 24/7 availability, and random coupons I have to give this place 5 stars!! It's a relatively good location because it's close to the 405 freeway and the plaza usually has a lot of parking. I imagine UCI students stop by here a lot but usually at the odd times I come to the store there is no crowd or lines. My favorite donuts here is the chocolate glazed old fashion and the chocolate French cruller. The French cruller is so light and airy and has just enough chocolate glaze to pair with the donut. The old fashion has the tapered edges that make it bloom out like a flower and always breaks off evenly so I end up with a smaller donut ring to eat after taking off all the outer edges. Quick tip, there's always random coupons in the mail for 20% off or buy 2 get 2. However, the donuts are so dang affordable that usually it's no big deal to get it at full price. The cruller and old fashion came out to $2.50 for both, and for a overly sweet bite to eat at 2 AM this place really hits the right spot. Thank you for servicing Irvine!
