Came here for the first time to try an Egg Tart. It was good. Tart is missing some sweetness and the crust is hard. It is missing the flakiness of the crust. Egg tart looks light in color but if you are looking for less sweet, this is your place. The other pastries and breads look delicious! Only had room for a small luxury. Service was great! This is my family's go to bakery in SF for Chinese baked goods. The service is no frills and surprisingly they take credit cards. Our go to baked items are the ham and egg sandwich, cocktail bun, mini muffins and the hot dog bun. Prices are very reasonable for today's prices. We also get our celebration cakes here as well and the fruit cakes are a major standout! We usually get the 8 inch mixed fruit cake which is very good. This latest time we preordered a 10 inch one which was ready in a huge box at pick up. We thought they maybe gave us the wrong cake or there was lots of empty space in the box. Boy were we wrong! The cake was huge and sooo beautifully decorated full of fresh cut mangoes, blue berries, strawberries, cantaloupe, kiwis and honeydew. We were amazed by how much fruit there was! Small bakery but filled with a variety of Chinese pastries! Fancy wheat field has multiple locations in San Francisco. I usually go to the one on San Bruno Ave which is the first store but I was closer to this location in the Sunset district this day. As this is ran by Chinese aunties that are a bit older in age with limited English speaking skills, you have to be patient. They are trying their best to help but do not expect them to fully answer any questions if you can't speak Chinese. There's a small language barrier but they are trying their best! I have never had an issue buying from them and I have been going for years! Grab what you want onto the tray and bring it up to pay. I believe it is cash only so be prepared! I absolutely love the egg tarts here, they are delicious! Must try if you are in the area. Workers are super sweet and they got me some new egg tarts from the back trays! Definitely not the best customer service, but damn do they make a good cake. If you're a fan of the super fluffy, fruit filled, not too sweet Asian style cakes, this is the spot. We ordered their famous Mango cake for my mom's bday and it was true perfection. The mangos were plenty and so beautifully placed. It wasn't too sweet and the sponge was fluffy as a cloud. The best part, imo is definitely how creamy their whipped filling is. They don't skimp on the mangos and the cake pleased the birthday girl. Would highly recommend ordering ahead of time. Tldr: great cakes AND great baked goods. Wow their cake is so much better than 85C bakery! I can taste the egg in the sponge cake and sooo much fresh fruit on the top AND inside. With 85C bakery cakes, I feel I'm just ingesting tons of sugar. Their truck was parked close by and I can see they are unloading tons of fresh fruit for their future cakes! We didn't order in advance and grabbed a cake from the display. $23 comes with candles, knife, utensils, and plates. I wanted to try there baked goods. Wow! Delicious! I think this is the best black sesame bun I've ever had because of the punch of sesame flavor in the paste and the crunchy addition of walnuts. Taro in the bun was really fresh. My parents surprised me for my birthday today with a cake from Fancy Wheatfield Bakery. None of us had ever been to this bakery before, but my parents apparently decided to give it a try as they work in the neighborhood. First impression was that the box was very sturdy and very fancy. Inside, there is a side compartment that contains additional paper plates, forks, serving knife, and even birthday candles! We got the mango fruit cake, and it comes very well made with many layers of thinly cut mangos consisting of the "shell". It was definitely a very pretty and delicious to boot! According to my mom, the prices here for baked goods are actually cheaper than Sheng Kee. And it turns out, they actually have 3 locations in the city. Will definitely have to swing by sometime when I find myself back in SF. read more

My favorite fancy wheat field - from affordable crepe cakes and Asian sponge-fruit cakes to the perfect Swiss roll and fresh moon cakes - they have it all. The kind of place that teaches you how wonderful "Asian sweetness level" can be. It's a small store and the line to purchase can get difficult, but I've only had great customer service from these ladies. The place is meh. The bread sizes are shrinking. Like a shredded pork roll bun is like half it's size from before. Cashier lady is rude and unprofessional. After I paid, I had 6 PCs of bread on the tray waiting for her to put on a bag or box. She pushed it back to me and said. That's how it is, just take it. It's like that ...when you don't get a bag. I was pretty upset because she never offered me a bag at all or anything for that matter. If there are rules, they can put up a sign to let customers know?! If it costs, she could've asked me to pay for one when I was paying like normal other places? I don't understand what happened. I felt humiliated because the people behind me just watched me grab the 6 loose bags of buns while they figured to request a bag for their 2 buns. I love their mango cakes so much that I always buy it for any birthday in my family! Though the ladies at the bakery are sometimes very hostile, it's truly a full experience I ordered a 12 inch cake back in December and the smallest size on June 11th. The last half hour before closing they only take cash. Cakes come with candles, paper plates and forks (the ones that that are used for fruit) inside the cake box. Let them know if it's for a birthday, the small cake they used a small plastic sign, but for the bigger cakes a white chocolate sign is used. read more

Business does not adhere to California gift card law. I visited this bakery and purchased two items for a total of $5 and presented a $10 gift certificate as payment. Cashier bluntly refused to pay out the difference and told me that I had to make a minimum purchase of $10 to use the gift certificate. California law, Civil Code section 1749.5(b)(2), provides that any gift card with a cash value of less than $10 is redeemable in cash for its value. In other words, the business is legally obligated to refund the remaining $5 difference in cash ($10 gift certificate - $5 purchase = $5 remainder). However, business refused. I ask on this public forum for this wrong to be righted; that employees be properly trained. In the coming days, I expect to follow up with the San Francisco DA's Consumer Protection Division and the Department of Consumer Affairs. read more

Small bakery and not as much selection as 85 degrees or Sheng kee. We really like the paper wrapped sponge cake. Tried the pork floss, green onion roll but not enough filling or pork floss, seems like they trick you into thinking it's filled with pork floss but it's not. Just a bit of cream in a semi dry bread and slapped on a bit of pork floss on the side to make it appear filled. They take credit card over $10. read more

They have a very diverse selection of goodies to choose from and also beautifully decorated cakes that are perfect for any celebration. My family isn't too big on sweets and so the fruits cakes strike the perfect balance for our Asian household. I recommend ordering the mango cake. Not to sweet but lots of mangos! If you're a frequent buyer, I think they used tonoffer a reward card where you get 10% off every purchase. The staff here predominantly speaks Cantonese but can understand English. Order ahead if you're looking for a large cake. They also have another location in the city, one near Alemany boulevard, selling the same stuff. Parking in the area can be very difficult especially on weekends. Beware about double parking or doing any illegal maneuvers on Irving. They have cops constantly patrolling and will ticket! read more

I also like their swiss rolls and the cart in the middle of the store is a nice design although it's also why the store is cramped. This was my first egg tart and it was so good! The yummy scent coming from the bakery lured us in and we ended up buying lots of different bread to try! Out of everything the egg tart was the best and my friend really liked the pork bun she got. It seemed like locals also enjoy this place and it got crowded pretty quickly. There was one elder lady who was in front of me in line and pulled out her cash to pay but the cashier sort of aggressively ripped it out of her hand. Maybe the line was getting long so she wanted to get through the transaction fast, but I felt a little bad for the older lady. Also I wish the bags had tape to close them or seal them. Maybe I rushed out and didn't see tape to close it (as it's a traditional self-serve Asian bakery) but I ended up having to leave it in my bag and hope the crumbs don't fall out. read more

Its stuffed with fresh fruit (not the canned fruit cocktail like some comparable bakeries) and loaded with fresh slices mangoes, strawberries and kiwi. The sponge cake is airy, soft, and fresh. They also don't load it up with cream, it isn't super sweet either so you don't have to feel guilty having a 2nd slice because you're just eating pretty much fruit! Best Macau/Portuguese/Po Tat egg tarts I've ever had. Worth the wait when they're out of stock and you need to stand patiently near the register for new fresh tarts to go from oven to box. Croissant was ridiculously flaky and buttery. Nearly as good as ones I've had in Paris. Seasame cookies are light and airy. Great with coffee, tea, or wine. I've been to this bakery several times a year for the past decade. I was buying pastry from Fancy wheatfield bakery since it opened first location in San Francisco few years ago, I am sorry to say I would never come back again after last couple shopping experience in San Bruno location and Irving location. They had horrible customer service and it is getting worse now. I saw cashier ladies yelled and rushed elderly customers multiple time. When elderly customers got delayed 1-2 seconds, cashier just passed them without asking. 2 weeks ago, I tried to spend a gift certificate in 2668 San Bruno Ave location , the cashier lady refused to accept it even I pointed out 2668 San Bruno Ave ( dim sum ) was listing on gift certificate. She said she never took gift certificate in her store and this was only good for pastry. Whatever she said was not described on gift certificate at all. Few day later , my mom tried to use it to pay partial of a birthday cake. There was 3 ladies in frontline, only 2-3 customers was picking pastries by their own. When my mom asked one cashier lady if she could see photo of birthday cake . The lady stared my mom and pointed cake refrigerator with finger and said "there, check it" . Only 3 fruit cakes were sitting inside , so my mom asked another lady who removed food tray and standing next to cake refrigerator, " what type of cake they are and any other type beside of them". This lady said" I don't know , asked her" she directed my mom to 3rd lady. The third lady took a glance to us and pretend she did not see us even we were standing in front of her in register counter. Again, typical Fancy Wheatfield customer service, the only conversation she gave us was " what you want , I don't know how cake look , no picture, I have no control , you want it ? Don't block line if you are not ready !" We are ready , but looks like nobody in this bakery wants our business. I am sure this is last time I will shop in this bakery. Btw, when we paid it by gift certificate and cash, I can tell she was not happy to accept it and threw our receipts on counter. Business owners, if you or your staffs hate to accept gift certificates, you guys should not sell it at all. Don't give attitude to customer. read more
