A hidden gem on Noriega! We tried the cookie egg tarts and BBQ pork buns, and both were fantastic. The cookie egg tarts had a rich, buttery crust with a smooth, semi-sweet egg custard. The sweetness was really well balanced and rich enough to feel indulgent without becoming overly sweet. The crust-to-custard ratio was also spot-on. The BBQ pork buns were another standout. The meat-to-bun ratio was perfect, and I especially loved that the BBQ pork was minced into smaller pieces than you typically find in these buns. That gave the filling a better texture. The filling leaned a little sweeter, but that sweetness worked beautifully with the savory soft bread. And a shoutout to the lovely lady who helped us! Boss Bakery Date: September 24, 2026 Today was the day to try pork buns in the Outer Sunset neighborhood. I bought a BBQ Pork Bun for $2.50. The bun had a decent amount of pork filling inside, more than some of the other pork buns I tried in the neighborhood. The taste was okay, but it wasn't something I would go back for. This place deserves more attention because the quality of their pastries is consistently top-notch. The store itself is clean, and the display cases are all neatly organized and labeled. I popped in to see if they're selling the semi viral fried chicken cutlet bun -- I've seen people eat this on TT so I wanted to see if it's actually that amazing. What it is: fried chicken patty inside a typical Chinese bun. They add some kewpie mayo and lettuce. It tastes a little bit like a fish fillet but in chicken form. Oh my goodness what a sweet little bakery. If you are in the West side of SF this is the place to go to get a quality breakfast. Service is very nice and the person behind the counter is very sweet. No pun intended. If you are a coffee fan you are getting stuff that rivals the best donut shop in the city. Recently, I've been going to Boss Bakery and I can't say enough good things about this place. I am so happy I found this gem in the neighborhood. After spending my whole life here in the Sunset, how have I not been coming here the whole time?! The baked goods are always fresh and delicious. The taro puffs and vegetable pork buns are my favorite . What really makes this place stand out, though, is the one of the employees. One of the employees in particular is always so kind, welcoming, and helpful. Super sweet lady and it's clear she cares about their customers. I came across this bakery near my house. We tried the pineapple buns, egg tarts, corn mayonnaise bread, steamed Chinese cupcakes, and tuna bread. My favorite was the egg tarts. The egg tarts were fresh and not too sweet. The pineapple buns were average in my opinion as the top pineapple crust were not crispy. Chinese Bakeries in San Francisco have been around for almost 100 years with the oldest and most famous bakery, Eastern Bakery, located in SF Chinatown on Grant Avenue. Needless to say, each neighborhood with a fair sized Asian population, or Asian Strip Mall, will likely have an Asian usually Chinese bakery. The middle? Sunset Area is no exception as it has Boss Bakery to supply less sweet baked goods to its clients. My better half and I wandered into Boss Bakery after having lunch across the street. You can never have enough fresh baked goods at home to satisfy that baked good hunger. BB is a small shop with most items individually wrapped in plastic bags and the warmer items like Custard Tarts and Coconut Pineapple Tarts sitting in the warmer where the clerk will retrieve and bag individually. We selected a few recognizable items which have become mainstays at all Chinese Bakeries: - Pork Sung Bau (a little too much Mayo for my wife), - Lo Pau or Old Wife Cookie (a bit dry with not much melon flavor), - Green Onion Bun (needed more green onion and a little more salt), - the two Tarts (the crust did not hold up on the Custard Tart while the Custard consistency and taste were spot on, the second tart's filling was dry needing tea to help swallow), and a - Pineapple Custard Bun (the outer crust flaked off at first bite and the inner custard had more of a jelly than custard consistency to it). All the items were a little off while the prices were reasonable. The help is non-existent as the clerk leaves the items on the tray to bag yourself after checking out and collecting your cash - their COVID protocol?!? I came across this bakery while next door at Duke's hardware store. Craving some sweet carbs, and ready for a long drive back to LA, I strolled in to pick up some items. All of their pastries were on display, and I just tell the cashier what I wanted, she grabs it for me ... simple! I got a few taro puffs, pineapple buns and egg tarts. They were all taken from a glass large cabinet (for freshness I assume). The texture on all those were flaky and smelled fresh. Unfortunately, everything I tasted were on the bland side. They all were in need of more sugar and some indication of what I'm eating. The taro had a great texture and consistency, but if I were blind folded, I wouldn't be able to tell what it is I'm eating. The same goes for the egg tarts. The pineapple buns were soft and fresh, but again ... no flavor. They resembled plain bread, and the only subtlety was the sweetness from the dough itself. I usually see the same girl working; she is very friendly and willing to help you out. She can speak both english and cantonese which is good for the area's customers. Currently for safety, they have a couple items on display but the employee will help you get a warm, fresh one from behind the counter once you decide what you want. I would say the prices are fair/ average compared to other places. The baked goods were very tasty and perfect for a snack. Just a tip, I believe they are cash only right now. Add this new Asian bakery to the endless array of existing mediocre ones throughout Chinatown, the Sunset and the Richmond. I didn't find anything particularly "wrong" with Boss, but I didn't discover anything particularly outstanding about it either. I came specifically to check out the fresh bread rolls, which I heard were baked on the premises for their Banh Mi sandwiches. They were indeed fresh and soft, but I've had much better Banh Mi sandwiches in many other places. I ordered their Special Banh Mi (#1). The "cold cuts" of pork seemed skimpy, though the veggie fillings of carrots, etc. were fresh and crispy. Unless I was on Noriega craving a Banh Mi on the spot, I'd go elsewhere. Unfortunate, since they seem to tout their Banh Mi sandwiches as one of their specialty items. There is a vast selection of traditional Chinese pastries, including the classic Chinese Egg Tarts. I was able to snag a super fresh one still on the baking tray, that they hadn't yet placed into the bins. The egg filling itself was really pretty good, and on par with the ones I've had at the infamous "stand in a 30 minute line Golden Gate Bakery," but the crust was sorely lacking. It was definitely a fresh tart, but you could never tell from the crust that seemed to lack even one layer of flakiness. The crust is fifty percent of an egg tart, and one of the features that many people look most forward to, and for some, even more so than the egg filling itself. So, I guess it's back to standing in an endlessly long line at the Golden Gate Bakery. Also tried the Coconut Rice Cake, which had a nice sweet texture. However, the crust, which I imagine could've been at least somewhat crisp, was soft and not at all crisp, even at the edgings. I'm assuming the softness of the crust was more than likely because it came displayed inside a plastic wrap. Originally, I planned on also getting the Pandan Coconut Rice Cake, as well as one of the other durian pastries for a friend, but I'm glad I passed, after a disappointing try with the Coconut Rice Cake. I'm always excited about trying out a new restaurant, even a simple neighborhood bakery. I really wanted to like this one, especially because I went far out of my way to get here. I really like this small bakery on Noriega, especially its Pineapple buns. They have the perfect soft crunch and aren't overly baked or crumbly like other bakeries. I haven't been able to find this style of pineapple bun anywhere else nearby. Boss Bakery only takes cash and has a limited offering and selection, with no loafs or cakes, but if you know what "baos" you want, and it's in the display window, then it's bound to be good. The lady working the place speaks English and Cantonese and knows her regulars well. I also really like Boss' egg custard tarts. They're not overly sweet and they are fairly priced. Personally I like the crusts to be a little on the lighter, flakier side, which Boss delivers on. Apparently, some people are so used to burned toasty crusts from dim sum restaurants that they felt strongly enough to give 2 star reviews to this minority owned and operated small business in COVID, which is a pretty petty thing to do. IMHO Boss Bakery egg custard tarts are great. If you want overbaked egg tarts, wider selection, cakes or loafs of bread, go to a chain like Sheng Kee or 85C and leave this small business alone. read more

I pre ordered 120 BBQ pork buns for a party, had to pay cash and talk to the owner over the phone to approve since they are a small batch bakery. I needed to have all the buns wrapped in plastic due to COVID for a kids party and it was a top hit! Would highly recommend this small mom and pop store! old school paper receipts (take a photo of receipt as soon as possible, as they collect the receipt upon pickup). Ownership has changed so Boss only sells baked goods now. Everything we tried here was solid (pineapple buns, mochi) but what I found particularly delicious was the "Mexican bun," which I used to enjoy often as a kid. In fact, I haven't found a bakery in the Sunset besides Boss who makes this bread so this is the primary reason why I'm giving this business 4 stars instead of 3. The Mexican bun has a fascinating origin story and like many immigrant fusion creations, it's got global appeal. Think a softer fluffier pineapple bun with a cloud-like crust. Boss makes theirs with a noticeable amount of salt which I love because it adds depth to the flavor and enhances the buttery sweetness of the bread. So what I normally would rank as a 3-3.5 star bakery will get rounded up to a 4 thanks to the Mexican bun! read more

The egg tart also unfortunately was nothing special. The crust tasted a bit undercooked. I also ordered a bread with sausage and that one tasted okay too. When I came they had a fresh batch of hot egg tarts out and they were yummy. Silky custard and flaky crust, oh so, so good. I tried their pandan coconut cake and didn't like it, I think it may have been left over from the day before because there weren't many left and we came in shortly after they opened. I was on a quest for the perfect "wife cookie" which are thin, flaky pastries with winter melon filling. I must have tried 8 bakeries in the city and found that Boss Bakery had the best. We ordered 30 for a party and they turned out perfectly. The strange thing was that when we picked up the cookies, the box had "Geneva Bakery" stamped on it. Maybe it's the same owner? Also, the salesperson did not speak English at all. However, not sure if it's a coincidence, or if someone was watching on their camera, when we were trying to order, someone who spoke English called the bakery, and she handed the phone to me and the person over the phone took my order and instructed the salesperson what to do. SIP was the first time I've come to Boss Bakery. I was here this past week to buy baos for the week. I was here around 2pm and they pretty much sold out of everything but the cashier mentioned a guy who came in right before me and bought 2 boxes of buns so i guess it was just bad timing. Pineapple BBQ pork buns are pretty solid and very full of filling. The egg tart is delicious with a flaky crust. They also do mini hot dog baos and a cheese topped hot dog bao. What I respect about this place is that the other day I used a $100 bill to pay for a $10 order and when the cashier was giving me the change she counted it in front if me so i just started grabbing it when she was done and then she stopped me to have me recount it and make sure it's the correct change. I was a little shocked because i said i saw her count it and she said there are people and this is popular in Asia that they will count your change so you "see" it but then swipe bills. I wanted to pickup a few thousand egg tarts and pork buns for my daughter's after school sports program. You know how hungry kids can get after playing after school sports. I had a bad experience with the bakery staff when they opened up a few years back. The staff was totally unorganized then so I assumed that after a few years they may have worked out the kinks. Boy, I was so wrong. They are still rude and offer double standards to people they know and other customers that walks in. This is what happened today. I was there around noon time and there were a few customers waiting in line. I just stepped forward a bit and the gal behind me just step over the line and cut in front of me. The staff seen it and said nothing. Then this gal bought at least ten items. Being very observant and knowing the approximate pricing, I thought her bill would be around $20 but was astonished that the cashier told her it was only $12.00. The customer told the staff that she wanted certain items that the staff have to reach in to get like the egg tarts. She wanted the one all the way in front of the counter. The staff complied. When I came to the counter, I asked if i can have those unblemished egg tart in front of the case. The female cashier refuse to comply. I ask why did she do it for the customer in front of me, she refuse to comply and wanted to give me the egg tarts that had quite a bit of blemish. I told her why i did not get the same service as the previous customer and she just snarl at me. I guess I caught her "NOT TREATING ALL CUSTOMER EQUALLY". Well I never going to patronize "Boss Bakery" ever until they learn to treat all customer equally. I just walked out and went to the other bakery further up on Noreiga. I really like to give my business that treats patrons nice and equally. For these afternoon program, my usually order is three dozen pork buns and another three dozen egg tarts. Too bad I will be patronizing your competitors. Businesses have to realize the need for customer. Without customers patronizing your business, you business may not exist. Offering rude services does not help. One day, customers will patronize your competitors. Just remember that your business will not exist without our patronage. If you are the business owner, think about how I was treated by your cashier. If you were me, would you go back and patronize this business.
