Nothing flashy about this bar but I like the corner bar like feel I get when I'm here. They have a good selection of beers and they're pretty affordable. While I was here there was a mixture of people: friends, a couple, and a guy stopping in for a drink presumably after work. The staff was friendly and the bartender helped me in choosing a beer I'd like. There were board games in one corner of the room, so playing could be fun with a group of friends. There was a TV at the bar that was playing the Simpsons while I was there which everyone seemed to be watching. Although I haven't tried the food yet, I like that they have a lot of vegan options here. It seems like they collect money for shelter animals (cats only maybe?). I had my 21st birthday celebration at this quaint little bar, because I was subletting the house next door for the summer with a bunch of friends. Needless to say, I spent a good part of that summer at Doobie's. Its a great little place--very chill, but also young. The food (much of which is vegetarian or vegan) is pretty good and they have a good selection of beers. You wouldn't want to order a fancy cocktail at Doobie's, but they do make good drinks. Everyone is really nice; its the type of place where the bartenders remember you AND your favroite drink. To top off all the good stuff, they have games! I went here last night for the first time and while there is such potential for this to be a great local go-to for me the vibe was wildly uncomfortable. Upon walking in my boyfriend and I felt immediately unwelcome. There was no exchange of niceties from the bartender and when my boyfriend ordered a drink the bartender stared me down while I tried to read the draft menu on the wall (I didnt wear my glasses so it was hard for me to see)- I panic ordered a drink bc I felt pressured to hurry up and like I was being an inconvenience. Everything we touched it felt like the bartender was irritated- she tucked in our bar stools aggressively the moment we moved to a table- when we were packing up to leave she hovered over us with a rag to clean the table and said not 1 word to us when we walked by to exit. It was so bizarre bc she was not that way with the other patrons. Doubtful I'll be returning which is a shame bc they have some fun board games to play and a good juke box selection! read more

Another bar that put's the 'teeny' in Martini, Doobie's is a neighborhood dive with a lot of old-school personality. The bartender was this old dude who was pretty entertaining. The beer was cheap. Exceedingly cheap. I went with a bunch of folks and our tab was so ridiculously low that I thought the bartender was dyslexic. The jukebox was oldschool, as well, which I like. It had the Johnny Cash cover album so I played his rendition of Personal Jesus, which seemed appropriate to the conversation we were having (somehow about Jesus, despite the no religion/no politics rule I have for bars. If you're going to Doobies, I definitely recommend going all Andre the Giant and bringing a posse. read more

I love Doobies, because Doobies loves animals. They were kind enough to let us have our Ringling Pre-Protest party here, and made sure to have many vegan specials on the menu. They donate to local animal charities as well. Great beer list, and a good bar food. I wish I had discovered this hole in the wall when I lived in the neighborhood. read more

I once lived within three blocks of the Doob, and spent some not-unimpressive amount of my graduate school loans there. A Lager, a pack of Parliaments, and some money for the jukebox made it a night. The nachos were entirely ghetto - something I could have made for myself for a couple dollars - but they beat the fancy-pants set at Chaucers by far (who puts a bed of lettuce on an order of nachos?). Dirty: certainly. Hipster? Probably, or as close to it as Philly will get (hello, Sean Agnew). Unfriendly? Hardly. I used to have to just pack up and leave to get the bartender to stop talking to me. Doobie's can haz it. Fans of the "dive lite" will gush over a soft-spoken, bare bones space that sort of has to be mellowed and laid back - just look at the name. Cheap pitchers are par for the course, and while the kitchen smelled as comforting as fried and flat-topped foods can get, we did not partake. So what sets the Doob above the bar? Pet friendliness and the uncanny ability to maintain every pawn, die and card to every board game they own. Great, home-cooked food from a shoe-box kitchen, a beautiful old liquor cabinet (book shelf?), wide cedar planks for walls, perpetually wet floors in the closet bathroom. I had bookmarked Doobie's a few months back when searching for bars in Philly where I can showcase my Scrabble skills. This past weekend I finally went, but played Scattergories instead:) My friends and I had been drinking in the rain most of the afternoon at Bloktoberfest and we then sought shelter at Doobie's after looking for a laid back bar to hang out. I was pleasantly surprised and this is definitely a spot I want to return to many times. Sometimes I think certain dive bars that have high ratings on yelp are an acquired taste, but Doobies definitely earns its 4 star rating. The owner was so nice, made sure we had all the materials to play our board game of choice, and the drinks are CHEAP. Draft list is solid, and I think they were having a fundraiser for cats when I was there? Definitely a plus in my book. The atmosphere is laid back and divey, yet cute and not dirty. Dirty. Unfriendly hipster vibe. Bartender is...edgy. Ordered nachos (which were gross) and as I lifted the last stale chip into my mouth, a movement by the bartender's feet caught my attention. If you've ever seen Doobies, none of this should come as a surprise, and it didn't to me. So I calmly pounded my Flying Fish, closed my tab and left. Can't say enough about this place. They always have quality beer at great prices. The kitchen is open until 1am. It's dimly lit and homely. The staff is great, and so is the jukebox. They have a bunch of board games sitting around waiting for you to partake. All pretense is left outside. The clientele is great and they are the most animal friendly/pro-pet place around. Doobie's is a straight-up gem... that's bottom line. The menu ALWAYS has stuff for every carnivore, omnivore, and the strictest of herbivores... and the items are color coded depending whether they are meat / vegetarian / vegan. Added bonus... they also do some Trini food. They are running doubles right now... where else in Philly are you gonna get a doubles at midnight... on a Monday?!!! It's cash only, so that might be an inconvenience, but it's one of the best bars in Philly... if not THE best, so plan ahead... or use the ATM inside. This is the mold for what a neighborhood bar should be... with a refined beer list. Sometimes its just nice to get out of lab, where it can be pretty solitary and just hang out at a bar where they know you and you are familiar with the staff there. I have been at this bar over a half of dozen times, it is very nieghhood type place between South and Lombard on 22nd street. They have a wide range of every beer you can think of and the food is actually very tasty. I have never been a fan of Doobies but have found myself her numerous times because of friends who are fans or people who haven't tried it and want to. Each time I go I seem to think to myself how did I end up here again. The service is super slow they are very friendly and nice to appoint some they move your group, they get mad/frustrated when some people order at the bar and some people order at a table. The one person acted like it was the end of world when people in my group ask for there portion of the bill so they could leave. It has an odd odor in the bar. Other than the beer being awesomely priced, I can't see why this always seems to make the top 50 bar list of Philly. Personally I am not a fan and probably never will be won over to this place, although I've tired several times. read more

When I first moved to Graduate Hospital, I was confused by this little block of a bar that had no windows. I was hesitant to go in, but don't judge this little place by its cover, its really awesome inside! It's a very unique and laid-back dive bar that has a good selection of beer, whiskey and other liquors. There are a lot of board games to play and to kill time with. The food options are more limited as they don't have anything that is fried. A lot of people have mentioned poor service, but the many times I have been there, the bartenders and servers have always been friendly and would be cracking jokes. I knew I would love Doobie's when I walked in and was greeted by Nigel (the super friendly bar dog). I knew I would love it more, when I realized that patrons were also bringing dogs. Yay! And everyone in the bar was watching Karate Kid (which is even better after a few beers). The staff was super friendly, the patrons were friendly. The dogs were friendly (and really that is all it takes for me to love a place). I sort of felt like I was in an old episode of cheers because everyone else there knew each other. My only complaint was that the beers were kind of pricey. Lovin' the Doobie's. I have been craving a good dive bar since moving here from Chicago. I hate the over-packed and trendy spots along Chestnut. Shut up drunk sluts! Go home! Doobie's is that casual spot where you can enjoy a conversation or music from the jukebox without the interruption of all the 20/30 somethings that have driven the Mercedes in from the burbs to be loud and drunk in Center City. They also have food. You can stop in here and have some beer and some food for a reasonable price. Doobies is your typical hole-in-the-wall neighborhood dive. Cheap beer and a menu serving standard pub far, with a few vegetarian and vegan options. I tried the veggie pita pizza, but wasn't too impressed (seemed liked something I'd make at home when to lazy to cook). While it's not my favorite hang out, I do like to support this place as the owners are huge animal lovers who collect donations for feral cats and even refused to play the Eagles games when Micheal Vick was on the team. Doobie's is a great neighborhood dive bar - I would give it 5 stars except inside can get really cramped which is why I find myself here more often when it's nice out than during the winter season. There are a bunch of tables outside where you can enjoy the windmills on the trees above you and drink very cheap drinks and good beers. My boyfriend enjoys the Slyfox and whiskey shot deal for 5 bucks (I would too if I drank whiskey). I don't eat here often but have enjoyed the nachos and hot dogs. I heart a great dive bar. That's why I fell in lust at Doobie's. It's far too infrequent that I travel past 20th street, but this little gem reminds me again why I moved back to The City of Brotherly Love. Eccentric and genial staff, fantastic draught selection, and that neighborly corner bar atmosphere we watering hole goers are always out on the prowl to identify. So after years living at 23rd and Pine I moved to deep deep south philly, miles from doobie's. I do miss it, though I was never a regular. It's been there forever, you can bring your dogs, and it's got cheap booze and decent bar food. Center city, but definitely downmarket boho crowd, an interesting mix. Next to Grace it is my favorite neighborhood bar in Fitler Square. And a truly great juke box. read more

3.5 Stars Solid dive. Not the best dive bar in the city, but at least it's not one of those pseudo-dives that suprises you with a Blue Martini type bill at the end. Go here to check out the comedy show on Wednesdays. It's entertaining and features local comics who will likely get drunk with you. The food is pretty decent, but more importantly, very cheap. I had the crab cake burger which was very tasty and only 5 bucks. It was plagued with the same problem that SO many crab cake burgers have; it's sooo much more bun that crab cake. Maybe there should be smaller buns meant just for crab cake sandwhiches. Yeah, there should. Doobie's has a surprisingly decent/modest draught selection that wouldn't piss off a beer snob (although why would a beer snob go to a dive bar?) The waitress told me "Doobie's doesn't serve fried foods" and I was all like, "Cool, a health-conscious hole-in-the-wall." It seemed neat, but my sandwhich came which potato chips which are indeed a fried food. So Doobie's just doesn't fry anything themselves (they probably don't wanna deal with a deep-fryer. I went around 5pm for some drinks and games. I sat at the bar for 20 minutes and no one came by to take our drink order or even tell us to wait. It wasn't busy, there were only two other people in the entire bar. We looked around for some games to play while we waited, but we couldn't find any anywhere. it's hard to give a bad review to the bar that lives on your block. but doobies, you made me do it. while the beer choices are pretty decent, there is something moldy and uncomfortable about doobies. maybe it's the closet sized bathroom, maybe its all the dog hair ive seen on the ketchup bottle, i really cant say. yes, it is a haven for dog-lovers, and individuals that need a puppy-fix (guilty!), but unless youre looking for the one of the only places in town that serves abita beer, i would pass. im sorry doobies, i hope we can still be friends. read more

I have been to this bar several times over the past few years. They have an interesting menu with vegan options and great beer selection. The bar tenders are always friendly, as is most of the clientele I have encountered. There is outdoor seating and you can always venture inside for a quick game of connect four and delicious brew. Local bar with good drinks and food. I not only support them because of their service and food but because of their stand on dogfighter Mr. Vick. I will never forgive him for what he did and the jail sentence was a slap on the wrist. He is evil and I would never support a business that supports him. This bar is a breath of fresh air in a world that people put $$ above their morals and values.
